Numbers 26.
26:1 After the plague the LORD said to Moses and Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest,
26:2 "Take a census of the whole Israelite community by families--all those twenty years old or more who are able to serve in the army of Israel."
26:3 So on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho, Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them and said,
26:4 "Take a census of the men twenty years old or more, as the LORD commanded Moses." These were the Israelites who came out of Egypt:
26:5 The descendants of Reuben, the firstborn son of Israel, were: through Hanoch, the Hanochite clan; through Pallu, the Palluite clan;
26:6 through Hezron, the Hezronite clan; through Carmi, the Carmite clan.
26:7 These were the clans of Reuben; those numbered were 43,730.
26:8 The son of Pallu was Eliab,
26:9 and the sons of Eliab were Nemuel, Dathan and Abiram. The same Dathan and Abiram were the community officials who rebelled against Moses and Aaron and were among Korah's followers when they rebelled against the LORD.
26:10 The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them along with Korah, whose followers died when the fire devoured the 250 men. And they served as a warning sign.
26:11 The line of Korah, however, did not die out.
26:12 The descendants of Simeon by their clans were: through Nemuel, the Nemuelite clan; through Jamin, the Jaminite clan; through Jakin, the Jakinite clan;
26:13 through Zerah, the Zerahite clan; through Shaul, the Shaulite clan.
26:14 These were the clans of Simeon; there were 22,200 men.
26:15 The descendants of Gad by their clans were: through Zephon, the Zephonite clan; through Haggi, the Haggite clan; through Shuni, the Shunite clan;
26:16 through Ozni, the Oznite clan; through Eri, the Erite clan;
26:17 through Arodi, the Arodite clan; through Areli, the Arelite clan.
26:18 These were the clans of Gad; those numbered were 40,500.
26:19 Er and Onan were sons of Judah, but they died in Canaan.
26:20 The descendants of Judah by their clans were: through Shelah, the Shelanite clan; through Perez, the Perezite clan; through Zerah, the Zerahite clan.
26:21 The descendants of Perez were: through Hezron, the Hezronite clan; through Hamul, the Hamulite clan.
26:22 These were the clans of Judah; those numbered were 76,500.
26:23 The descendants of Issachar by their clans were: through Tola, the Tolaite clan; through Puah, the Puite clan;
26:24 through Jashub, the Jashubite clan; through Shimron, the Shimronite clan.
26:25 These were the clans of Issachar; those numbered were 64,300.
26:26 The descendants of Zebulun by their clans were: through Sered, the Seredite clan; through Elon, the Elonite clan; through Jahleel, the Jahleelite clan.
26:27 These were the clans of Zebulun; those numbered were 60,500.
26:28 The descendants of Joseph by their clans through Manasseh and Ephraim were:
26:29 The descendants of Manasseh: through Makir, the Makirite clan (Makir was the father of Gilead); through Gilead, the Gileadite clan.
26:30 These were the descendants of Gilead: through Iezer, the Iezerite clan; through Helek, the Helekite clan;
26:31 through Asriel, the Asrielite clan; through Shechem, the Shechemite clan;
26:32 through Shemida, the Shemidaite clan; through Hepher, the Hepherite clan.
26:33 (Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons; he had only daughters, whose names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah.)
26:34 These were the clans of Manasseh; those numbered were 52,700.
26:35 These were the descendants of Ephraim by their clans: through Shuthelah, the Shuthelahite clan; through Beker, the Bekerite clan; through Tahan, the Tahanite clan.
26:36 These were the descendants of Shuthelah: through Eran, the Eranite clan.
26:37 These were the clans of Ephraim; those numbered were 32,500. These were the descendants of Joseph by their clans.
26:38 The descendants of Benjamin by their clans were: through Bela, the Belaite clan; through Ashbel, the Ashbelite clan; through Ahiram, the Ahiramite clan;
26:39 through Shupham, the Shuphamite clan; through Hupham, the Huphamite clan.
26:40 The descendants of Bela through Ard and Naaman were: through Ard, the Ardite clan; through Naaman, the Naamite clan.
26:41 These were the clans of Benjamin; those numbered were 45,600.
26:42 These were the descendants of Dan by their clans: through Shuham, the Shuhamite clan. These were the clans of Dan:
26:43 All of them were Shuhamite clans; and those numbered were 64,400.
26:44 The descendants of Asher by their clans were: through Imnah, the Imnite clan; through Ishvi, the Ishvite clan; through Beriah, the Beriite clan;
26:45 and through the descendants of Beriah: through Heber, the Heberite clan; through Malkiel, the Malkielite clan.
26:46 (Asher had a daughter named Serah.)
26:47 These were the clans of Asher; those numbered were 53,400.
26:48 The descendants of Naphtali by their clans were: through Jahzeel, the Jahzeelite clan; through Guni, the Gunite clan;
26:49 through Jezer, the Jezerite clan; through Shillem, the Shillemite clan.
26:50 These were the clans of Naphtali; those numbered were 45,400.
26:51 The total number of the men of Israel was 601,730.
26:52 The LORD said to Moses,
26:53 "The land is to be allotted to them as an inheritance based on the number of names.
26:54 To a larger group give a larger inheritance, and to a smaller group a smaller one; each is to receive its inheritance according to the number of those listed.
26:55 Be sure that the land is distributed by lot. What each group inherits will be according to the names for its ancestral tribe.
26:56 Each inheritance is to be distributed by lot among the larger and smaller groups."
26:57 These were the Levites who were counted by their clans: through Gershon, the Gershonite clan; through Kohath, the Kohathite clan; through Merari, the Merarite clan.
26:58 These also were Levite clans: the Libnite clan, the Hebronite clan, the Mahlite clan, the Mushite clan, the Korahite clan. (Kohath was the forefather of Amram;
26:59 the name of Amram's wife was Jochebed, a descendant of Levi, who was born to the Levites in Egypt. To Amram she bore Aaron, Moses and their sister Miriam.
26:60 Aaron was the father of Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.
26:61 But Nadab and Abihu died when they made an offering before the LORD with unauthorized fire.)
26:62 All the male Levites a month old or more numbered 23,000. They were not counted along with the other Israelites because they received no inheritance among them.
26:63 These are the ones counted by Moses and Eleazar the priest when they counted the Israelites on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho.
26:64 Not one of them was among those counted by Moses and Aaron the priest when they counted the Israelites in the Desert of Sinai.
26:65 For the LORD had told those Israelites they would surely die in the desert, and not one of them was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
Psalms 69.
69:1 Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck.
69:2 I sink in the miry depths, where there is no foothold. I have come into the deep waters; the floods engulf me.
69:3 I am worn out calling for help; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God.
69:4 Those who hate me without reason outnumber the hairs of my head; many are my enemies without cause, those who seek to destroy me. I am forced to restore what I did not steal.
69:5 You know my folly, O God; my guilt is not hidden from you.
69:6 May those who hope in you not be disgraced because of me, O Lord, the LORD Almighty; may those who seek you not be put to shame because of me, O God of Israel.
69:7 For I endure scorn for your sake, and shame covers my face.
69:8 I am a stranger to my brothers, an alien to my own mother's sons;
69:9 for zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who insult you fall on me.
69:10 When I weep and fast, I must endure scorn;
69:11 when I put on sackcloth, people make sport of me.
69:12 Those who sit at the gate mock me, and I am the song of the drunkards.
69:13 But I pray to you, O LORD, in the time of your favor; in your great love, O God, answer me with your sure salvation.
69:14 Rescue me from the mire, do not let me sink; deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep waters.
69:15 Do not let the floodwaters engulf me or the depths swallow me up or the pit close its mouth over me.
69:16 Answer me, O LORD, out of the goodness of your love; in your great mercy turn to me.
69:17 Do not hide your face from your servant; answer me quickly, for I am in trouble.
69:18 Come near and rescue me; redeem me because of my foes.
69:19 You know how I am scorned, disgraced and shamed; all my enemies are before you.
69:20 Scorn has broken my heart and has left me helpless; I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found none.
69:21 They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst.
69:22 May the table set before them become a snare; may it become retribution and a trap.
69:23 May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever.
69:24 Pour out your wrath on them; let your fierce anger overtake them.
69:25 May their place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in their tents.
69:26 For they persecute those you wound and talk about the pain of those you hurt.
69:27 Charge them with crime upon crime; do not let them share in your salvation.
69:28 May they be blotted out of the book of life and not be listed with the righteous.
69:29 I am in pain and distress; may your salvation, O God, protect me.
69:30 I will praise God's name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving.
69:31 This will please the LORD more than an ox, more than a bull with its horns and hoofs.
69:32 The poor will see and be glad--you who seek God, may your hearts live!
69:33 The LORD hears the needy and does not despise his captive people.
69:34 Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and all that move in them,
69:35 for God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah. Then people will settle there and possess it;
69:36 the children of his servants will inherit it, and those who love his name will dwell there.
Isaiah 16.
16:1 Send lambs as tribute to the ruler of the land, from Sela, across the desert, to the mount of the Daughter of Zion.
16:2 Like fluttering birds pushed from the nest, so are the women of Moab at the fords of the Arnon.
16:3 "Give us counsel, render a decision. Make your shadow like night--at high noon. Hide the fugitives, do not betray the refugees.
16:4 Let the Moabite fugitives stay with you; be their shelter from the destroyer." The oppressor will come to an end, and destruction will cease; the aggressor will vanish from the land.
16:5 In love a throne will be established; in faithfulness a man will sit on it--one from the house of David--one who in judging seeks justice and speeds the cause of righteousness.
16:6 We have heard of Moab's pride--her overweening pride and conceit, her pride and her insolence--but her boasts are empty.
16:7 Therefore the Moabites wail, they wail together for Moab. Lament and grieve for the men of Kir Hareseth.
16:8 The fields of Heshbon wither, the vines of Sibmah also. The rulers of the nations have trampled down the choicest vines, which once reached Jazer and spread toward the desert. Their shoots spread out and went as far as the sea.
16:9 So I weep, as Jazer weeps, for the vines of Sibmah. O Heshbon, O Elealeh, I drench you with tears! The shouts of joy over your ripened fruit and over your harvests have been stilled.
16:10 Joy and gladness are taken away from the orchards; no one sings or shouts in the vineyards; no one treads out wine at the presses, for I have put an end to the shouting.
16:11 My heart laments for Moab like a harp, my inmost being for Kir Hareseth.
16:12 When Moab appears at her high place, she only wears herself out; when she goes to her shrine to pray, it is to no avail.
16:13 This is the word the LORD has already spoken concerning Moab.
16:14 But now the LORD says: "Within three years, as a servant bound by contract would count them, Moab's splendor and all her many people will be despised, and her survivors will be very few and feeble."
1 Peter 4.
4:1 Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because he who has suffered in his body is done with sin.
4:2 As a result, he does not live the rest of his earthly life for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God.
4:3 For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do--living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry.
4:4 They think it strange that you do not plunge with them into the same flood of dissipation, and they heap abuse on you.
4:5 But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.
4:6 For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to men in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.
4:7 The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray.
4:8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.
4:9 Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.
4:10 Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms.
4:11 If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
4:12 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you.
4:13 But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.
4:14 If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.
4:15 If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler.
4:16 However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.
4:17 For it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God?
4:18 And, "If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?"
4:19 So then, those who suffer according to God's will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.
