여호수아 9 장.

수9:1 이 일 후에 요단 서쪽 산지와 평지와 레바논 앞 대해 연안에 있는 헷 사람과 아모리 사람 과 가나안 사람과 브리스 사람과 히위 사람과 여부스 사람의 모든 왕들이 이 일을 듣고

수9:2 모여서 일심으로 여호수아와 이스라엘에 맞서서 싸우려 하더라

수9:3 기브온 주민들이 여호수아가 여리고와 아이에게 행한 일을 듣고

수9:4 죄를 내어 사신의 모양을 꾸미되 해어진 전대와 해어지고 찢어져서 기운 가죽 포도주 부대를 나귀에 싣고

수9:5 그 발에는 낡아서 기운 신을 신고 낡은 옷을 입고 다 마르고 곰팡이가 난 떡을 준비하고

수9:6 그들이 길갈 진영으로 가서 여호수아에게 이르러 그와 이스라엘 사람들에게 이르되 우리는 먼 나라에서 왔나이다 이제 우리와 조약을 맺읍시다 하니

수9:7 이스라엘 사람들이 히위 사람에게 이르되 너희가 우리 가운데에 거주하는 듯하니 우리가 어떻게 너희와 조약을 맺을 수 있으랴 하나

수9:8 그들이 여호수아에게 이르되 우리는 당신의 종들이니이다 하매 여호수아가 그들에게 묻되 너희는 누구며 어디서 왔느냐 하니

수9:9 그들이 여호수아에게 대답하되 종들은 당신의 하나님 여호와의 이름으로 말미암아 심히 먼 나라에서 왔사오니 이는 우리가 그의 소문과 그가 애굽에서 행하신 모든 일을 들으며

수9:10 또 그가 요단 동쪽에 있는 아모리 사람의 두 왕들 곧 헤스본 왕 시혼과 아스다롯에 있는 바산 왕 옥에게 행하신 모든 일을 들었음이니이다

수9:11 그러므로 우리 장로들과 우리 나라의 모든 주민이 우리에게 말하여 이르되 너희는 여행할 양식을 손에 가지고 가서 그들을 만나서 그들에게 이르기를 우리는 당신들의 종들이니 이제 우리와 조약을 맺읍시다 하라 하였나이다

수9:12 우리의 이 떡은 우리가 당신들에게로 오려고 떠나던 날에 우리들의 집에서 아직도 뜨거운 것을 양식으로 가지고 왔으나 보소서 이제 말랐고 곰팡이가 났으며

수9:13 또 우리가 포도주를 담은 이 가죽 부대도 새 것이었으나 찢어지게 되었으며 우리의 이 옷과 신도 여행이 매우 길었으므로 낡아졌나이다 한지라

수9:14 무리가 그들의 양식을 취하고는 어떻게 할지를 여호와께 묻지 아니하고

수9:15 여호수아가 곧 그들과 화친하여 그들을 살리리라는 조약을 맺고 회중 족장들이 그들에게 맹세하였더라

수9:16 그들과 조약을 맺은 후 사흘이 지나서야 그들이 이웃에서 자기들 중에 거주하는 자들이라 함을 들으니라

수9:17 이스라엘 자손이 행군하여 셋째 날에 그들의 여러 성읍들에 이르렀으니 그들의 성읍들은 기브온과 그비라와 브에롯과 기럇여아림이라

수9:18 그러나 회중 족장들이 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와로 그들에게 맹세했기 때문에 이스라엘 자손이 그들을 치지 못한지라 그러므로 회중이 다 족장들을 원망하니

수9:19 모든 족장이 온 회중에게 이르되 우리가 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와로 그들에게 맹세하였은즉 이제 그들을 건드리지 못하리라

수9:20 우리가 그들에게 맹세한 맹약으로 말미암아 진노가 우리에게 임할까 하노니 이렇게 행하여 그들을 살리리라 하고

수9:21 무리에게 이르되 그들을 살리라 하니 족장들이 그들에게 이른 대로 그들이 온 회중을 위하여 나무를 패며 물을 긷는 자가 되었더라

수9:22 여호수아가 그들을 불러다가 말하여 이르되 너희가 우리 가운데에 거주하면서 어찌하여 심히 먼 곳에서 왔다고 하여 우리를 속였느냐

수9:23 그러므로 너희가 저주를 받나니 너희가 대를 이어 종이 되어 다 내 하나님의 집을 위하여 나무를 패며 물을 긷는 자가 되리라 하니

수9:24 그들이 여호수아에게 대답하여 이르되 당신의 하나님 여호와께서 그의 종 모세에게 명령하사 이 땅을 다 당신들에게 주고 이 땅의 모든 주민을 당신들 앞에서 멸하라 하신 것이 당신의 종들에게 분명히 들리므로 당신들로 말미암아 우리의 목숨을 잃을까 심히 두려워하여 이같이 하였나이다

수9:25 보소서 이제 우리가 당신의 손에 있으니 당신의 의향에 좋고 옳은 대로 우리에게 행하소서 한지라

수9:26 여호수아가 곧 그대로 그들에게 행하여 그들을 이스라엘 자손의 손에서 건져서 죽이지 못하게 하니라

수9:27 그 날에 여호수아가 그들을 여호와께서 택하신 곳에서 회중을 위하며 여호와의 제단을 위하여 나무를 패며 물을 긷는 자들로 삼았더니 오늘까지 이르니라

시편 140 장.

시140:1 여호와여 악인에게서 나를 건지시며 포악한 자에게서 나를 보전하소서

시140:2 그들이 마음속으로 악을 꾀하고 싸우기 위하여 매일 모이오며

시140:3 뱀 같이 그 혀를 날카롭게 하니 그 입술 아래에는 독사의 독이 있나이다 (셀라)

시140:4 여호와여 나를 지키사 악인의 손에 빠지지 않게 하시며 나를 보전하사 포악한 자에게서 벗어나게 하소서 그들은 나의 걸음을 밀치려 하나이다

시140:5 교만한 자가 나를 해하려고 올무와 줄을 놓으며 길 곁에 그물을 치며 함정을 두었나이다 (셀라)

시140:6 내가 여호와께 말하기를 주는 나의 하나님이시니 여호와여 나의 간구하는 소리에 귀를 기울이소서 하였나이다

시140:7 내 구원의 능력이신 주 여호와여 전쟁의 날에 주께서 내 머리를 가려 주셨나이다

시140:8 여호와여 악인의 소원을 허락하지 마시며 그의 악한 꾀를 이루지 못하게 하소서 그들이 스스로 높일까 하나이다 (셀라)

시140:9 나를 에워싸는 자들이 그들의 머리를 들 때에 그들의 입술의 재난이 그들을 덮게 하소서

시140:10 뜨거운 숯불이 그들 위에 떨어지게 하시며 불 가운데와 깊은 웅덩이에 그들로 하여금 빠져 다시 일어나지 못하게 하소서

시140:11 악담하는 자는 세상에서 굳게 서지 못하며 포악한 자는 재앙이 따라서 패망하게 하리이다

시140:12 내가 알거니와 여호와는 고난 당하는 자를 변호해 주시며 궁핍한 자에게 정의를 베푸시리이다

시140:13 진실로 의인들이 주의 이름에 감사하며 정직한 자들이 주의 앞에서 살리이다

시편 141 장.

시141:1 여호와여 내가 주를 불렀사오니 속히 내게 오시옵소서 내가 주께 부르짖을 때에 내 음성에 귀를 기울이소서

시141:2 나의 기도가 주의 앞에 분향함과 같이 되며 나의 손 드는 것이 저녁 제사 같이 되게 하소서

시141:3 여호와여 내 입에 파수꾼을 세우시고 내 입술의 문을 지키소서

시141:4 내 마음이 악한 일에 기울어 죄악을 행하는 자들과 함께 악을 행하지 말게 하시며 그들의 진수성찬을 먹지 말게 하소서

시141:5 의인이 나를 칠지라도 은혜로 여기며 책망할지라도 머리의 기름 같이 여겨서 내 머리가 이를 거절하지 아니할지라 그들의 재난 중에도 내가 항상 기도하리로다

시141:6 그들의 재판관들이 바위 곁에 내려 던져졌도다 내 말이 달므로 무리가 들으리로다

시141:7 사람이 밭 갈아 흙을 부스러뜨림같이 우리의 해골이 스올 입구에 흩어졌도다

시141:8 주 여호와여 내 눈이 주께 향하며 내가 주께 피하오니 내 영혼을 빈궁한 대로 버려 두지 마옵소서

시141:9 나를 지키사 그들이 나를 잡으려고 놓은 올무와 악을 행하는 자들의 함정에서 벗어나게 하옵소서

시141:10 악인은 자기 그물에 걸리게 하시고 나만은 온전히 면하게 하소서

예레미야 3 장.

렘3:1 그들이 말하기를 가령 사람이 그의 아내를 버리므로 그가 그에게서 떠나 타인의 아내가 된다 하자 남편이 그를 다시 받겠느냐 그리하면 그 땅이 크게 더러워지지 아니하겠느냐 하느니라 네가 많은 무리와 행음하고서도 내게로 돌아오려느냐 여호와의 말씀이니라

렘3:2 네 눈을 들어 헐벗은 산을 보라 네가 행음하지 아니한 곳이 어디 있느냐 네가 길가에 앉아 사람들을 기다린 것이 광야에 있는 아라바 사람 같아서 음란과 행악으로 이 땅을 더럽혔도다

렘3:3 그러므로 단비가 그쳤고 늦은 비가 없어졌느니라 그럴지라도 네가 창녀의 낯을 가졌으므로 수치를 알지 못하느니라

렘3:4 네가 이제부터는 내게 부르짖기를 나의 아버지여 아버지는 나의 청년 시절의 보호자이시오니

렘3:5 노여움을 한없이 계속하시겠으며 끝까지 품으시겠나이까 하지 아니하겠느냐 보라 네가 이같이 말하여도 악을 행하여 네 욕심을 이루었느니라 하시니라

렘3:6 요시야 왕 때에 여호와께서 또 내게 이르시되 너는 배역한 이스라엘이 행한 바를 보았느냐 그가 모든 높은 산에 오르며 모든 푸른 나무 아래로 가서 거기서 행음하였도다

렘3:7 그가 이 모든 일들을 행한 후에 내가 말하기를 그가 내게로 돌아오리라 하였으나 아직도 내게로 돌아오지 아니하였고 그의 반역한 자매 유다는 그것을 보았느니라

렘3:8 내게 배역한 이스라엘이 간음을 행하였으므로 내가 그를 내쫓고 그에게 이혼서까지 주었으되 그의 반역한 자매 유다가 두려워하지 아니하고 자기도 가서 행음함을 내가 보았노라

렘3:9 그가 돌과 나무와 더불어 행음함을 가볍게 여기고 행음하여 이 땅을 더럽혔거늘

렘3:10 이 모든 일이 있어도 그의 반역한 자매 유다가 진심으로 내게 돌아오지 아니하고 거짓으로 할뿐이니라 여호와의 말씀이니라

렘3:11 여호와께서 내게 이르시되 배역한 이스라엘은 반역한 유다 보다 자신이 더 의로움이 나타났나니

렘3:12 너는 가서 북을 향하여 이 말을 선포하여 이르라 여호와께서 이르시되 배역한 이스라엘아 돌아오라 나의 노한 얼굴을 너희에게로 향하지 아니하리라 나는 긍휼이 있는 자라 노를 한없이 품지 아니하느니라 여호와의 말씀이니라

렘3:13 너는 오직 네 죄를 자복하라 이는 네 하나님 여호와를 배반하고 네 길로 달려 이방인들에게로 나아가 모든 푸른 나무 아래로 가서 내 목소리를 듣지 아니하였음이라 여호와의 말씀이니라

렘3:14 여호와의 말씀이니라 배역한 자식들아 돌아오라 나는 너희 남편임이라 내가 너희를 성읍에서 하나와 족속 중에서 둘을 택하여 너희를 시온으로 데려오겠고

렘3:15 내가 또 내 마음에 합한 목자들을 너희에게 주리니 그들이 지식과 명철로 너희를 양육하리라

렘3:16 여호와의 말씀이니라 너희가 이 땅에서 번성하여 많아질 때에는 사람들이 여호와의 언약궤를 다시는 말하지 아니할 것이요 생각하지 아니할 것이요 기억하지 아니할 것이요 찾지 아니할 것이요 다시는 만들지 아니할 것이며

렘3:17 그 때에 예루살렘이 그들에게 여호와의 보좌라 일컬음이 되며 모든 백성이 그리로 모이리니 곧 여호와의 이름으로 말미암아 예루살렘에 모이고 다시는 그들의 악한 마음의 완악한 대로 그들이 행하지 아니할 것이며

렘3:18 그 때에 유다 족속이 이스라엘 족속과 동행하여 북에서부터 나와서 내가 너희 조상들에게 기업으로 준 땅에 그들이 함께 이르리라

렘3:19 내가 말하기를 내가 어떻게 하든지 너를 자녀들 중에 두며 허다한 나라들 중에 아름다운 기업인 이 귀한 땅을 네게 주리라 하였고 내가 다시 말하기를 너희가 나를 나의 아버지라 하고 나를 떠나지 말 것이니라 하였노라

렘3:20 그런데 이스라엘 족속아 마치 아내가 그의 남편을 속이고 떠나감 같이 너희가 확실히 나를 속였느니라 여호와의 말씀이니라

렘3:21 소리가 헐벗은 산 위에서 들리니 곧 이스라엘 자손이 애곡하며 간구하는 것이라 그들이 그들의 길을 굽게 하며 자기 하나님 여호와를 잊어버렸음이로다

렘3:22 배역한 자식들아 돌아오라 내가 너희의 배역함을 고치리라 하시니라 보소서 우리가 주께 왔사오니 주는 우리 하나님 여호와이심이니이다

렘3:23 작은 산들과 큰 산 위에서 떠드는 것은 참으로 헛된 일이라 이스라엘의 구원은 진실로 우리 하나님 여호와께 있나이다

렘3:24 부끄러운 그것이 우리가 청년의 때로부터 우리 조상들의 산업인 양 떼와 소 떼와 아들들과 딸들을 삼켰사온즉

렘3:25 우리는 수치 중에 눕겠고 우리의 치욕이 우리를 덮을 것이니 이는 우리와 우리 조상들이 청년의 때로부터 오늘까지 우리 하나님 여호와께 범죄하여 우리 하나님 여호와의 목소리에 순종하지 아니 하였음이니이다

마태복음 17 장.

마17:1 엿새 후에 예수께서 베드로와 야고보와 그 형제 요한을 데리시고 따로 높은 산에 올라 가셨더니

마17:2 그들 앞에서 변형되사 그 얼굴이 해 같이 빛나며 옷이 빛과 같이 희어졌더라

마17:3 그 때에 모세와 엘리야가 예수와 더불어 말하는 것이 그들에게 보이거늘

마17:4 베드로가 예수께 여쭈어 이르되 주여 우리가 여기 있는 것이 좋사오니 만일 주께서 원하시면 내가 여기서 초막 셋을 짓되 하나는 주님을 위하여, 하나는 모세를 위하여, 하나는 엘리야를 위하여 하리이다

마17:5 말할 때에 홀연히 빛난 구름이 그들을 덮으며 구름 속에서 소리가 나서 이르시되 이는 내 사랑하는 아들이요 내 기뻐하는 자니 너희는 그의 말을 들으라 하시는지라

마17:6 제자들이 듣고 엎드려 심히 두려워하니

마17:7 예수께서 나아와 그들에게 손을 대시며 이르시되 일어나라 두려워 말라 하시니

마17:8 제자들이 눈을 들고 보매 오직 예수 외에는 아무도 보이지 아니하더라

마17:9 저희가 산에서 내려올 때에 예수께서 명하여 이르시되 인자가 죽은 자 가운데서 살아나기 전에는 본 것을 아무에게도 이르지 말라 하시니

마17:10 제자들이 물어 이르되 그러면 어찌하여 서기관들이 엘리야가 먼저 와야 하리라 하나이까

마17:11 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 엘리야가 과연 먼저 와서 모든 일을 회복하리라

마17:12 내가 너희에게 말하노니 엘리야가 이미 왔으되 사람들이 알지 못하고 임의로 대우하였도다 인자도 이와 같이 그들에게 고난을 받으리라 하시니

마17:13 그제서야 제자들이 예수께서 말씀하신 것이 세례 요한인 줄을 깨달으니라

마17:14 그들이 무리에게 이르매 한 사람이 예수께 와서 꿇어 엎드려 이르되

마17:15 주여 내 아들을 불쌍히 여기소서 그가 간질로 심히 고생하여 자주 불에도 넘어지며 물에도 넘어지는지라

마17:16 내가 주의 제자들에게 데리고 왔으나 능히 고치지 못하더이다

마17:17 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 믿음이 없고 패역한 세대여 내가 얼마나 너희와 함께 있으며 얼마나 너희에게 참으리요 그를 이리로 데려오라 하시니라

마17:18 이에 예수께서 꾸짖으시니 귀신이 나가고 아이가 그 때부터 나으니라

마17:19 이 때에 제자들이 조용히 예수께 나아와 이르되 우리는 어찌하여 쫓아내지 못하였나이까

마17:20 이르시되 너희 믿음이 작은 까닭이니라 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 만일 너희에게 믿음이 겨자씨 한 알 만큼만 있어도 이 산을 명하여 여기서 저기로 옮겨지라 하면 옮겨 질 것이요 또 너희가 못할 것이 없으리라

마17:21 (없 음)

마17:22 갈릴리에 모일 때에 예수께서 제자들에게 이르시되 인자가 장차 사람들의 손에 넘겨져

마17:23 죽임을 당하고 제삼일에 살아나리라 하시니 제자들이 매우 근심하더라

마17:24 가버나움에 이르니 반 세겔 받는 자들이 베드로에게 나아와 이르되 너의 선생은 반 세겔을 내지 아니하느냐

마17:25 이르되 내신다 하고 집에 들어가니 예수께서 먼저 이르시되 시몬아 네 생각은 어떠하냐 세상 임금들이 누구에게 관세와 국세를 받느냐 자기 아들에게냐 타인에게냐

마17:26 베드로가 이르되 타인에게니이다 예수께서 이르시되 그렇다면 아들들은 세를 면하리라

마17:27 그러나 우리가 그들이 실족하지 않게 하기 위하여 네가 바다에 가서 낚시를 던져 먼저 오르는 고기를 가져 입을 열면 돈 한 세겔을 얻을 것이니 가져다가 나와 너를 위하여 주라 하시니라

Joshua 9.

9:1 Now when all the kings west of the Jordan heard about these things--those in the hill country, in the western foothills, and along the entire coast of the Great Sea as far as Lebanon (the kings of the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites)--

9:2 they came together to make war against Joshua and Israel.

9:3 However, when the people of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,

9:4 they resorted to a ruse: They went as a delegation whose donkeys were loaded with worn-out sacks and old wineskins, cracked and mended.

9:5 The men put worn and patched sandals on their feet and wore old clothes. All the bread of their food supply was dry and moldy.

9:6 Then they went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and the men of Israel, "We have come from a distant country; make a treaty with us."

9:7 The men of Israel said to the Hivites, "But perhaps you live near us. How then can we make a treaty with you?"

9:8 "We are your servants," they said to Joshua. But Joshua asked, "Who are you and where do you come from?"

9:9 They answered: "Your servants have come from a very distant country because of the fame of the LORD your God. For we have heard reports of him: all that he did in Egypt,

9:10 and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan--Sihon king of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth.

9:11 And our elders and all those living in our country said to us, 'Take provisions for your journey; go and meet them and say to them, "We are your servants; make a treaty with us."'

9:12 This bread of ours was warm when we packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. But now see how dry and moldy it is.

9:13 And these wineskins that we filled were new, but see how cracked they are. And our clothes and sandals are worn out by the very long journey."

9:14 The men of Israel sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the LORD.

9:15 Then Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the leaders of the assembly ratified it by oath.

9:16 Three days after they made the treaty with the Gibeonites, the Israelites heard that they were neighbors, living near them.

9:17 So the Israelites set out and on the third day came to their cities: Gibeon, Kephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath Jearim.

9:18 But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the assembly had sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. The whole assembly grumbled against the leaders,

9:19 but all the leaders answered, "We have given them our oath by the LORD, the God of Israel, and we cannot touch them now.

9:20 This is what we will do to them: We will let them live, so that wrath will not fall on us for breaking the oath we swore to them."

9:21 They continued, "Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and water carriers for the entire community." So the leaders' promise to them was kept.

9:22 Then Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said, "Why did you deceive us by saying, 'We live a long way from you,' while actually you live near us?

9:23 You are now under a curse: You will never cease to serve as woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God."

9:24 They answered Joshua, "Your servants were clearly told how the LORD your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you the whole land and to wipe out all its inhabitants from before you. So we feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we did this.

9:25 We are now in your hands. Do to us whatever seems good and right to you."

9:26 So Joshua saved them from the Israelites, and they did not kill them.

9:27 That day he made the Gibeonites woodcutters and water carriers for the community and for the altar of the LORD at the place the LORD would choose. And that is what they are to this day.

Psalms 140.

140:1 Rescue me, O LORD, from evil men; protect me from men of violence,

140:2 who devise evil plans in their hearts and stir up war every day.

140:3 They make their tongues as sharp as a serpent's; the poison of vipers is on their lips. Selah

140:4 Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; protect me from men of violence who plan to trip my feet.

140:5 Proud men have hidden a snare for me; they have spread out the cords of their net and have set traps for me along my path. Selah

140:6 O LORD, I say to you, "You are my God." Hear, O LORD, my cry for mercy.

140:7 O Sovereign LORD, my strong deliverer, who shields my head in the day of battle--

140:8 do not grant the wicked their desires, O LORD; do not let their plans succeed, or they will become proud. Selah

140:9 Let the heads of those who surround me be covered with the trouble their lips have caused.

140:10 Let burning coals fall upon them; may they be thrown into the fire, into miry pits, never to rise.

140:11 Let slanderers not be established in the land; may disaster hunt down men of violence.

140:12 I know that the LORD secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy.

140:13 Surely the righteous will praise your name and the upright will live before you.

Psalms 141.

141:1 O LORD, I call to you; come quickly to me. Hear my voice when I call to you.

141:2 May my prayer be set before you like incense; may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice.

141:3 Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.

141:4 Let not my heart be drawn to what is evil, to take part in wicked deeds with men who are evildoers; let me not eat of their delicacies.

141:5 Let a righteous man strike me--it is a kindness; let him rebuke me--it is oil on my head. My head will not refuse it. Yet my prayer is ever against the deeds of evildoers;

141:6 their rulers will be thrown down from the cliffs, and the wicked will learn that my words were well spoken.

141:7 They will say, "As one plows and breaks up the earth, so our bones have been scattered at the mouth of the grave."

141:8 But my eyes are fixed on you, O Sovereign LORD; in you I take refuge--do not give me over to death.

141:9 Keep me from the snares they have laid for me, from the traps set by evildoers.

141:10 Let the wicked fall into their own nets, while I pass by in safety.

Jeremiah 3.

3:1 "If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him and marries another man, should he return to her again? Would not the land be completely defiled? But you have lived as a prostitute with many lovers--would you now return to me?" declares the LORD.

3:2 "Look up to the barren heights and see. Is there any place where you have not been ravished? By the roadside you sat waiting for lovers, sat like a nomad in the desert. You have defiled the land with your prostitution and wickedness.

3:3 Therefore the showers have been withheld, and no spring rains have fallen. Yet you have the brazen look of a prostitute; you refuse to blush with shame.

3:4 Have you not just called to me: 'My Father, my friend from my youth,

3:5 will you always be angry? Will your wrath continue forever?' This is how you talk, but you do all the evil you can."

3:6 During the reign of King Josiah, the LORD said to me, "Have you seen what faithless Israel has done? She has gone up on every high hill and under every spreading tree and has committed adultery there.

3:7 I thought that after she had done all this she would return to me but she did not, and her unfaithful sister Judah saw it.

3:8 I gave faithless Israel her certificate of divorce and sent her away because of all her adulteries. Yet I saw that her unfaithful sister Judah had no fear; she also went out and committed adultery.

3:9 Because Israel's immorality mattered so little to her, she defiled the land and committed adultery with stone and wood.

3:10 In spite of all this, her unfaithful sister Judah did not return to me with all her heart, but only in pretense," declares the LORD.

3:11 The LORD said to me, "Faithless Israel is more righteous than unfaithful Judah.

3:12 Go, proclaim this message toward the north: "'Return, faithless Israel,' declares the LORD, 'I will frown on you no longer, for I am merciful,' declares the LORD, 'I will not be angry forever.

3:13 Only acknowledge your guilt--you have rebelled against the LORD your God, you have scattered your favors to foreign gods under every spreading tree, and have not obeyed me,'" declares the LORD.

3:14 "Return, faithless people," declares the LORD, "for I am your husband. I will choose you--one from a town and two from a clan--and bring you to Zion.

3:15 Then I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will lead you with knowledge and understanding.

3:16 In those days, when your numbers have increased greatly in the land," declares the LORD, "men will no longer say, 'The ark of the covenant of the LORD.' It will never enter their minds or be remembered; it will not be missed, nor will another one be made.

3:17 At that time they will call Jerusalem The Throne of the LORD, and all nations will gather in Jerusalem to honor the name of the LORD. No loncer will they follow the stubbornness of their evil hearts.

3:18 In those days the house of Judah will join the house of Israel, and together they will come from a northern land to the land I gave your forefathers as an inheritance.

3:19 "I myself said, "'How gladly would I treat you like sons and give you a desirable land, the most beautiful inheritance of any nation.' I thought you would call me 'Father' and not turn away from following me.

3:20 But like a woman unfaithful to her husband, so you have been unfaithful to me, O house of Israel," declares the LORD.

3:21 A cry is heard on the barren heights, the weeping and pleading of the people of Israel, because they have perverted their ways and have forgotten the LORD their God.

3:22 "Return, faithless people; I will cure you of backsliding." "Yes, we will come to you, for you are the LORD our God.

3:23 Surely the idolatrous commotion on the hills and mountains is a deception; surely in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel.

3:24 From our youth shameful gods have consumed the fruits of our fathers' labor--their flocks and herds, their sons and daughters.

3:25 Let us lie down in our shame, and let our disgrace cover us. We have sinned against the LORD our God, both we and our fathers; from our youth till this day we have not obeyed the LORD our God."

Matthew 17.

17:1 After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.

17:2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light.

17:3 Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.

17:4 Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters--one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah."

17:5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!"

17:6 When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified.

17:7 But Jesus came and touched them. "Get up," he said. "Don't be afraid."

17:8 When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.

17:9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, "Don't tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."

17:10 The disciples asked him, "Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?"

17:11 Jesus replied, "To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things.

17:12 But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands."

17:13 Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.

17:14 When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him.

17:15 "Lord, have mercy on my son," he said. "He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water.

17:16 I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him."

17:17 "O unbelieving and perverse generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me."

17:18 Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed from that moment.

17:19 Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, "Why couldn't we drive it out?"

17:20 He replied, "Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."

17:21

17:22 When they came together in Galilee, he said to them, "The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men.

17:23 They will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised to life." And the disciples were filled with grief.

17:24 After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma tax came to Peter and asked, "Doesn't your teacher pay the temple tax?"

17:25 "Yes, he does," he replied. When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. "What do you think, Simon?" he asked. "From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes--from their own sons or from others?"

17:26 "From others," Peter answered. "Then the sons are exempt," Jesus said to him.

17:27 "But so that we may not offend them, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours."
