룻기 1 장.

룻1:1 사사들이 치리하던 때에 그 땅에 흉년이 드니라 유다 베들레헴에 한 사람이 그의 아내와 두 아들을 데리고 모압 지방에 가서 거류하였는데

룻1:2 그 사람의 이름은 엘리멜렉이요 그의 아내의 이름은 나오미요 그의 두 아들의 이름은 말론과 기룐이니 유다 베들레헴 에브랏 사람들이더라 그들이 모압 지방에 들어가서 거기 살더니

룻1:3 나오미의 남편 엘리멜렉이 죽고 나오미와 그의 두 아들이 남았으며

룻1:4 그들은 모압 여자 중에서 그들의 아내를 맞이하였는데 하나의 이름은 오르바요 하나의 이름은 룻이더라 그들이 거기에 거주한 지 십 년쯤에

룻1:5 말론과 기룐 두 사람이 다 죽고 그 여인은 두 아들과 남편의 뒤에 남았더라

룻1:6 그 여인이 모압 지방에서 여호와께서 자기 백성을 돌보시사 그들에게 양식을 주셨다 함을 듣고 이에 두 며느리와 함께 일어나 모압 지방에서 돌아오려 하여

룻1:7 있던 곳에서 나오고 두 며느리도 그와 함께 하여 유다 땅으로 돌아오려고 길을 가다가

룻1:8 나오미가 두 며느리에게 이르되 너희는 각기 너희 어머니의 집으로 돌아가라 너희가 죽은 자들과 나를 선대한 것 같이 여호와께서 너희를 선대하시기를 원하며

룻1:9 여호와께서 너희에게 허락하사 각기 남편의 집에서 위로를 받게 하시기를 원하노라 하고 그들에게 입 맞추매 그들이 소리를 높여 울며

룻1:10 나오미에게 이르되 아니니이다 우리는 어머니와 함께 어머니의 백성에게로 돌아가겠나이다 하는지라

룻1:11 나오미가 이르되 내 딸들아 돌아가라 너희가 어찌 나와 함께 가려느냐 내 태중에 너희의 남편 될 아들들이 아직 있느냐

룻1:12 내 딸들아 되돌아가라 나는 늙었으니 남편을 두지 못할지라 가령 내가 소망이 있다고 말한다든지 오늘 밤에 남편을 두어 아들들을 낳는다 하더라도

룻1:13 너희가 어찌 그들이 자라기를 기다리겠으며 어찌 남편 없이 지내겠다고 결심하겠느냐 내 딸들아 그렇지 아니하니라 여호와의 손이 나를 치셨으므로 나는 너희로 말미암아 더욱 마음이 아프도다 하매

룻1:14 그들이 소리를 높여 다시 울더니 오르바는 그의 시어머니에게 입 맞추되 룻은 그를 붙좇았더라

룻1:15 나오미가 또 이르되 보라 네 동서는 그의 백성과 그의 신들에게로 돌아가나니 너도 너의 동서를 따라 돌아가라 하니

룻1:16 룻이 이르되 내게 어머니를 떠나며 어머니를 따르지 말고 돌아가라 강권하지 마옵소서 어머니께서 가시는 곳에 나도 가고 어머니께서 머무시는 곳에서 나도 머물겠나이다 어머니의 백성이 나의 백성이 되고 어머니의 하나님이 나의 하나님이 되시리니

룻1:17 어머니께서 죽으시는 곳에서 나도 죽어 거기 묻힐 것이라 만일 내가 죽는 일 외에 어머니를 떠나면 여호와께서 내게 벌을 내리시고 더 내리시기를 원하나이다 하는지라

룻1:18 나오미가 룻이 자기와 함께 가기로 굳게 결심함을 보고 그에게 말하기를 그치니라

룻1:19 이에 그 두 사람이 베들레헴까지 갔더라 베들레헴에 이를 때에 온 성읍이 그들로 말미암아 떠들며 이르기를 이이가 나오미냐 하는지라

룻1:20 나오미가 그들에게 이르되 나를 나오미라 부르지 말고 나를 마라라 부르라 이는 전능자가 나를 심히 괴롭게 하셨음이니라

룻1:21 내가 풍족하게 나갔더니 여호와께서 내게 비어 돌아오게 하셨느니라 여호와께서 나를 징벌하셨고 전능자가 나를 괴롭게 하셨거늘 너희가 어찌 나를 나오미라 부르느냐 하니라

룻1:22 나오미가 모압 지방에서 그의 며느리 모압 여인 룻과 함께 돌아왔는데 그들이 보리 추수 시작할 때에 베들레헴에 이르렀더라

사도행전 26 장.

행26:1 아그립바가 바울에게 이르되 너를 위하여 말하기를 네게 허락하노라 하니 이에 바울이 손을 들어 변명하되

행26:2 아그립바 왕이여 유대인이 고발하는 모든 일을 오늘 당신 앞에서 변명하게 된 것을 다행히 여기나이다

행26:3 특히 당신이 유대인의 모든 풍속과 문제를 아심이니이다 그러므로 내 말을 너그러이 들으시기를 바라나이다

행26:4 내가 처음부터 내 민족과 더불어 예루살렘에서 젊었을 때 생활한 상황을 유대인이 다 아는 바라

행26:5 일찍부터 나를 알았으니 그들이 증언하려 하면 내가 우리 종교의 가장 엄한 파를 따라 바리새인의 생활을 하였다고 할 것이라

행26:6 이제도 여기 서서 심문 받는 것은 하나님이 우리 조상에게 약속하신 것을 바라는 까닭이니

행26:7 이 약속은 우리 열두 지파가 밤낮으로 간절히 하나님을 받들어 섬김으로 얻기를 바라는 바인데 아그립바 왕이여 이 소망으로 말미암아 내가 유대인들에게 고소를 당하는 것이니이다

행26:8 당신들은 하나님이 죽은 사람을 다시 살리심을 어찌하여 못 믿을 것으로 여기나이까

행26:9 나도 나사렛 예수의 이름을 대적하여 많은 일을 행하여야 될 줄 스스로 생각하고

행26:10 예루살렘에서 이런 일을 행하여 대제사장들에게서 권한을 받아 가지고 많은 성도를 옥에 가두며 또 죽일 때에 내가 찬성 투표를 하였고

행26:11 또 모든 회당에서 여러 번 형벌하여 강제로 모독하는 말을 하게 하고 그들에 대하여 심히 격분하여 외국 성에까지 가서 박해하였고

행26:12 그 일로 대제사장들의 권한과 위임을 받고 다메섹으로 갔나이다

행26:13 왕이여 정오나 되어 길에서 보니 하늘로부터 해보다 더 밝은 빛이 나와 내 동행들을 둘러 비추는지라

행26:14 우리가 다 땅에 엎드러지매 내가 소리를 들으니 히브리 말로 이르되 사울아 사울아 네가 어찌하여 나를 박해하느냐 가시채를 뒷발질하기가 네게 고생이니라

행26:15 내가 대답하되 주여 누구시니이까 주께서 이르시되 나는 네가 박해하는 예수라

행26:16 일어나 너의 발로 서라 내가 네게 나타난 것은 곧 네가 나를 본 일과 장차 내가 네게 나타날 일에 너로 종과 증인을 삼으려 함이니

행26:17 이스라엘과 이방인들에게서 내가 너를 구원하여 그들에게 보내어

행26:18 그 눈을 뜨게 하여 어둠에서 빛으로, 사탄의 권세에서 하나님께로 돌아오게 하고 죄 사함과 나를 믿어 거룩하게 된 무리 가운데서 기업을 얻게 하리라 하더이다

행26:19 아그립바 왕이여 그러므로 하늘에서 보이신 것을 내가 거스르지 아니하고

행26:20 먼저 다메섹과 또 예루살렘에 있는 사람과 유대 온 땅과 이방인에게까지 회개하고 하나님께로 돌아와서 회개에 합당한 일을 하라 전하므로

행26:21 유대인들이 성전에서 나를 잡아 죽이고자 하였으나

행26:22 하나님의 도우심을 받아 내가 오늘까지 서서 높고 낮은 사람 앞에서 증언하는 것은 선지자들과 모세가 반드시 되리라고 말한 것밖에 없으니

행26:23 곧 그리스도가 고난을 받으실 것과 죽은 자 가운데서 먼저 다시 살아나사 이스라엘과 이방인들에게 빛을 전하시리라 함이니이다 하니라

행26:24 바울이 이같이 변명하매 베스도가 크게 소리 내어 이르되 바울아 네가 미쳤도다 네 많은 학문이 너를 미치게 한다 하니

행26:25 바울이 이르되 베스도 각하여 내가 미친 것이 아니요 참되고 온전한 말을 하나이다

행26:26 왕께서는 이 일을 아시기로 내가 왕께 담대히 말하노니 이 일에 하나라도 아시지 못함이 없는 줄 믿나이다 이 일은 한쪽 구석에서 행한 것이 아니니이다

행26:27 아그립바 왕이여 선지자를 믿으시나이까 믿으시는 줄 아나이다

행26:28 아그립바가 바울에게 이르되 네가 적은 말로 나를 권하여 그리스도인이 되게 하려 하는도다

행26:29 바울이 이르되 말이 적으나 많으나 당신뿐 아니라 오늘 내 말을 듣는 모든 사람도 다 이렇게 결박된 것 외에는 나와 같이 되기를 하나님께 원하나이다 하니라

행26:30 왕과 총독과 버니게와 그 함께 앉은 사람들이 다 일어나서

행26:31 물러가 서로 말하되 이 사람은 사형이나 결박을 당할 만한 행위가 없다 하더라

행26:32 이에 아그립바가 베스도에게 일러 이르되 이 사람이 만일 가이사에게 상소하지 아니하였더라면 석방 될 수 있을 뻔하였다 하니라

예레미야 36 장.

렘36:1 유다의 요시야 왕의 아들 여호야김 제사년에 여호와께로부터 예레미야에게 말씀이 임하니라 이르시되

렘36:2 너는 두루마리 책을 가져다가 내가 네게 말하던 날 곧 요시야의 날부터 오늘까지 이스라엘과 유다와 모든 나라에 대하여 내가 네게 일러 준 모든 말을 거기에 기록하라

렘36:3 유다 가문이 내가 그들에게 내리려 한 모든 재난을 듣고 각기 악한 길에서 돌이키리니 그리하면 내가 그 악과 죄를 용서하리라 하시니라

렘36:4 이에 예레미야가 네리야의 아들 바룩을 부르매 바룩이 예레미야가 불러 주는 대로 여호와께서 그에게 이르신 모든 말씀을 두루마리 책에 기록하니라

렘36:5 예레미야가 바룩에게 명령하여 이르되 나는 붙잡혔으므로 여호와의 집에 들어갈 수 없으니

렘36:6 너는 들어가서 내가 말한 대로 두루마리에 기록한 여호와의 말씀을 금식일에 여호와의 성전에 있는 백성의 귀에 낭독하고 유다 모든 성읍에서 온 자들의 귀에도 낭독하라

렘36:7 그들이 여호와 앞에 기도를 드리며 각기 악한 길을 떠나리라 여호와께서 이 백성에 대하여 선포하신 노여움과 분이 크니라

렘36:8 네리야의 아들 바룩이 선지자 예레미야가 자기에게 명령한 대로 하여 여호와의 성전에서 책에 있는 여호와의 모든 말씀을 낭독하니라

렘36:9 유다의 요시야 왕의 아들 여호야김의 제오년 구월에 예루살렘 모든 백성과 유다 성읍들에서 예루살렘에 이른 모든 백성이 여호와 앞에서 금식을 선포한지라

렘36:10 바룩이 여호와의 성전 위뜰 곧 여호와의 성전에 있는 새 문 어귀 곁에 있는 사반의 아들 서기관 그마랴의 방에서 그 책에 기록된 예레미야의 말을 모든 백성에게 낭독하니라

렘36:11 사반의 손자요 그마랴의 아들인 미가야가 그 책에 기록된 여호와의 말씀을 다 듣고

렘36:12 왕궁에 내려가서 서기관의 방에 들어가니 모든 고관 곧 서기관 엘리사마와 스마야의 아들 들라야와 악볼의 아들 엘라단과 사반의 아들 그마랴와 하나냐의 아들 시드기야와 모든 고관이 거기에 앉아 있는지라

렘36:13 미가야가 바룩이 백성의 귀에 책을 낭독할 때에 들은 모든 말을 그들에게 전하매

렘36:14 이에 모든 고관이 구시의 증손 셀레먀의 손자 느다냐의 아들 여후디를 바룩에게 보내 이르되 너는 백성의 귀에 낭독한 두루마리를 손에 가지고 오라 네리야의 아들 바룩이 두루마리를 손에 가지고 그들에게로 오니

렘36:15 그들이 바룩에게 이르되 앉아서 이를 우리 귀에 낭독하라 바룩이 그들의 귀에 낭독하매

렘36:16 그들이 그 모든 말씀을 듣고 놀라 서로 보며 바룩에게 이르되 우리가 이 모든 말을 왕에게 아뢰리라

렘36:17 그들이 또 바룩에게 물어 이르되 너는 그가 불러 주는 이 모든 말을 어떻게 기록하였느냐 청하노니 우리에게 알리라

렘36:18 바룩이 대답하되 그가 그의 입으로 이 모든 말을 내게 불러 주기로 내가 먹으로 책에 기록하였노라

렘36:19 이에 고관들이 바룩에게 이르되 너는 가서 예레미야와 함께 숨고 너희가 있는 곳을 사람에게 알리지 말라 하니라

렘36:20 그들이 두루마리를 서기관 엘리사마의 방에 두고 뜰에 들어가 왕께 나아가서 이 모든 말을 왕의 귀에 아뢰니

렘36:21 왕이 여후디를 보내어 두루마리를 가져오게 하매 여후디가 서기관 엘리사마의 방에서 가져다가 왕과 왕의 곁에 선 모든 고관의 귀에 낭독하니

렘36:22 그 때는 아홉째 달이라 왕이 겨울 궁전에 앉았고 그 앞에는 불 피운 화로가 있더라

렘36:23 여후디가 서너 쪽을 낭독하면 왕이 면도칼로 그것을 연하여 베어 화로 불에 던져서 두루마리를 모두 태웠더라

렘36:24 왕과 그의 신하들이 이 모든 말을 듣고도 두려워하거나 자기들의 옷을 찢지 아니하였고

렘36:25 엘라단과 들라야와 그마랴가 왕께 두루마리를 불사르지 말도록 아뢰어도 왕이 듣지 아니하였으며

렘36:26 왕이 왕의 아들 여라므엘과 아스리엘의 아들 스라야와 압디엘의 아들 셀레마에게 명령하여 서기관 바룩과 선지자 예레미야를 잡으라 하였으나 여호와께서 그들을 숨기셨더라

렘36:27 왕이 두루마리와 바룩이 예레미야의 입을 통해 기록한 말씀을 불사른 후에 여호와의 말씀이 예레미야에게 임하니라 이르시되

렘36:28 너는 다시 다른 두루마리를 가지고 유다의 여호야김 왕이 불사른 첫 두루마리의 모든 말을 기록하고

렘36:29 또 유다의 여호야김 왕에 대하여 이와 같이 말하기를 여호와의 말씀에 네가 이 두루마리를 불사르며 말하기를 네가 어찌하여 바벨론의 왕이 반드시 와서 이 땅을 멸하고 사람과 짐승을 이 땅에서 없어지게 하리라 하는 말을 이 두루마리에 기록하였느냐 하도다

렘36:30 그러므로 여호와께서 유다의 왕 여호야김에 대하여 이와 같이 말씀하시니라 그에게 다윗의 왕위에 앉을 자가 없게 될 것이요 그의 시체는 버림을 당하여 낮에는 더위, 밤에는 추위를 당하리라

렘36:31 또 내가 그와 그의 자손과 신하들을 그들의 죄악으로 말미암아 벌할 것이라 내가 일찍이 그들과 예루살렘 주민과 유다 사람에게 그 모든 재난을 내리리라 선포하였으나 그들이 듣지 아니하였느니라

렘36:32 이에 예레미야가 다른 두루마리를 가져다가 네리야의 아들 서기관 바룩에게 주매 그가 유다의 여호야김 왕이 불사른 책의 모든 말을 예레미야가 전하는 대로 기록하고 그 외에도 그 같은 말을 많이 더 하였더라

예레미야 37 장.

렘37:1 요시야의 아들 시드기야가 여호야김의 아들 고니야의 뒤를 이어 왕이 되었으니 이는 바벨론의 느부갓네살 왕이 그를 유다 땅의 왕으로 삼음이었더라

렘37:2 그와 그의 신하와 그의 땅 백성이 여호와께서 선지자 예레미야에게 하신 말씀을 듣지 아니하니라

렘37:3 시드기야 왕이 셀레마의 아들 여후갈과 마아세야의 아들 제사장 스바냐를 선지자 예레미야에게 보내 청하되 너는 우리를 위하여 우리 하나님 여호와께 기도하라 하였으니

렘37:4 그 때에 예레미야가 갇히지 아니하였으므로 백성 가운데 출입하는 중이었더라

렘37:5 바로의 군대가 애굽에서 나오매 예루살렘을 에워쌌던 갈대아인이 그 소문을 듣고 예루살렘에서 떠났더라

렘37:6 여호와의 말씀이 선지자 예레미야에게 임하여 이르시되

렘37:7 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시니라 너희를 보내어 내게 구하게 한 유다의 왕에게 아뢰라 너희를 도우려고 나왔던 바로의 군대는 자기 땅 애굽으로 돌아가겠고

렘37:8 갈대아인이 다시 와서 이 성을 쳐서 빼앗아 불사르리라

렘37:9 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시니라 너희는 스스로 속여 말하기를 갈대아인이 반드시 우리를 떠나리라 하지 말라 그들이 떠나지 아니하리라

렘37:10 가령 너희가 너희를 치는 갈대아인의 온 군대를 쳐서 그 중에 부상자만 남긴다 할지라도 그들이 각기 장막에서 일어나 이 성을 불사르리라

렘37:11 갈대아인의 군대가 바로의 군대를 두려워하여 예루살렘에서 떠나매

렘37:12 예레미야가 베냐민 땅에서 백성 가운데 분깃을 받으려고 예루살렘을 떠나 그리로 가려 하여

렘37:13 베냐민 문에 이른즉 하나냐의 손자요 셀레마의 아들인 이리야라 이름하는 문지기의 우두머리가 선지자 예레미야를 붙잡아 이르되 네가 갈대아인에게 항복하려 하는도다

렘37:14 예레미야가 이르되 거짓이다 나는 갈대아인에게 항복하려 하지 아니하노라 이리야가 듣지 아니하고 예레미야를 잡아 고관들에게로 끌어 가매

렘37:15 고관들이 노여워하여 예레미야를 때려서 서기관 요나단의 집에 가두었으니 이는 그들이 이 집을 옥으로 삼았음이더라

렘37:16 예레미야가 뚜껑 씌운 웅덩이에 들어간 지 여러 날 만에

렘37:17 시드기야 왕이 사람을 보내어 그를 이끌어내고 왕궁에서 그에게 비밀히 물어 이르되 여호와께로부터 받은 말씀이 있느냐 예레미야가 대답하되 있나이다 또 이르되 왕이 바벨론의 왕의 손에 넘겨지리이다

렘37:18 예레미야가 다시 시드기야 왕에게 이르되 내가 왕에게나 왕의 신하에게나 이 백성에게 무슨 죄를 범하였기에 나를 옥에 가두었나이까

렘37:19 바벨론의 왕이 와서 왕과 이 땅을 치지 아니하리라고 예언한 왕의 선지자들이 이제 어디 있나이까

렘37:20 내 주 왕이여 이제 청하건대 내게 들으시며 나의 탄원을 받으사 나를 서기관 요나단의 집으로 돌려보내지 마옵소서 내가 거기에서 죽을까 두려워하나이다

렘37:21 이에 시드기야 왕이 명령하여 예레미야를 감옥 뜰에 두고 떡 만드는 자의 거리에서 매일 떡 한 개씩 그에게 주게 하매 성중에 떡이 떨어질 때까지 이르니라 예레미야가 감옥 뜰에 머무니라

시편 9 장.

시9:1 내가 전심으로 여호와에 감사하오며 주의 모든 기이한 일들을 전하리이다

시9:2 내가 주를 기뻐하고 즐거워하며 지존하신 주의 이름을 찬송하리니

시9:3 내 원수들이 물러갈 때에 주 앞에서 넘어져 망함이니이다

시9:4 주께서 나의 의와 송사를 변호하셨으며 보좌에 앉으사 새롭게 심판하셨나이다

시9:5 이방 나라들을 책망하시고 악인을 멸하시며 그들의 이름을 영원히 지우셨나이다

시9:6 원수가 끊어져 영원히 멸망하였사오니 주께서 무너뜨린 성읍들을 기억할 수 없나이다

시9:7 여호와에서 영원히 앉으심이여 심판을 위하여 보좌를 준비하셨도다

시9:8 공의로 세계를 심판하심이여 정직으로 만민에게 판결을 내리시리로다

시9:9 여호와는 압제를 당하는 자의 요새이시요 환난 때의 요새이시로다

시9:10 여호와여 주의 이름을 아는 자는 주를 의지하오리니 이는 주를 찾는 자들을 버리지 아니하심이니이다

시9:11 너희는 시온에 계신 여호와를 찬송하며 그의 행사를 백성 중에 선포할지어다

시9:12 피 흘림을 심문하시는 이가 그들을 기억하심이여 가난한 자의 부르짖음을 잊지 아니하시도다

시9:13 여호와여 내게 은혜를 베푸소서 나를 사망의 문에서 일으키시는 주여 나를 미워하는 자에게서 받는 나의 고통을 보소서

시9:14 그리하시면 내가 주의 찬송을 다 전할 것이요 딸 시온의 문에서 주의 구원을 기뻐하리이다

시9:15 이방 나라들은 자기가 판 웅덩이에 빠짐이여 자기가 숨긴 그물에 자기 발이 걸렸도다

시9:16 여호와께서 자기를 알게 하사 심판을 행하셨음이여 악인은 자기가 손으로 행한 일에 스스로 얽혔도다 (힉가욘, 셀라)

시9:17 악인들이 스올로 돌아감이여 하나님을 잊어버린 모든 이방 나라들이 그리하리로다

시9:18 궁핍한 자가 항상 잊어버림을 당하지 아니함이여 가난한 자들이 영원히 실망하지 아니하리로다

시9:19 여호와여 일어나사 인생으로 승리를 얻지 못하게 하시며 이방 나라들이 주 앞에서 심판을 받게 하소서

시9:20 여호와여 그들을 두렵게 하시며 이방 나라들이 자기는 인생일 뿐인 줄 알게 하소서 (셀라)

Ruth 1.

1:1 In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land, and a man from Bethlehem in Judah, together with his wife and two sons, went to live for a while in the country of Moab.

1:2 The man's name was Elimelech, his wife's name Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Kilion. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem, Judah. And they went to Moab and lived there.

1:3 Now Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died, and she was left with her two sons.

1:4 They married Moabite women, one named Orpah and the other Ruth. After they had lived there about ten years,

1:5 both Mahlon and Kilion also died, and Naomi was left without her two sons and her husband.

1:6 When she heard in Moab that the LORD had come to the aid of his people by providing food for them, Naomi and her daughters-in-law prepared to return home from there.

1:7 With her two daughters-in-law she left the place where she had been living and set out on the road that would take them back to the land of Judah.

1:8 Then Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, "Go back, each of you, to your mother's home. May the LORD show kindness to you, as you have shown to your dead and to me.

1:9 May the LORD grant that each of you will find rest in the home of another husband." Then she kissed them and they wept aloud

1:10 and said to her, "We will go back with you to your people."

1:11 But Naomi said, "Return home, my daughters. Why would you come with me? Am I going to have any more sons, who could become your husbands?

1:12 Return home, my daughters; I am too old to have another husband. Even if I thought there was still hope for me--even if I had a husband tonight and then gave birth to sons--

1:13 would you wait until they grew up? Would you remain unmarried for them? No, my daughters. It is more bitter for me than for you, because the LORD'S hand has gone out against me!"

1:14 At this they wept again. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law good-by, but Ruth clung to her.

1:15 "Look," said Naomi, "your sister-in-law is going back to her people and her gods. Go back with her."

1:16 But Ruth replied, "Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.

1:17 Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me."

1:18 When Naomi realized that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her.

1:19 So the two women went on until they came to Bethlehem. When they arrived in Bethlehem, the whole town was stirred because of them, and the women exclaimed, "Can this be Naomi?"

1:20 "Don't call me Naomi," she told them. "Call me Mara, because the Almighty has made my life very bitter.

1:21 I went away full, but the LORD has brought me back empty. Why call me Naomi? The LORD has afflicted me; the Almighty has brought misfortune upon me."

1:22 So Naomi returned from Moab accompanied by Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, arriving in Bethlehem as the barley harvest was beginning.

Acts (of the Apostles) 26.

26:1 Then Agrippa said to Paul, "You have permission to speak for yourself." So Paul motioned with his hand and began his defense:

26:2 "King Agrippa, I consider myself fortunate to stand before you today as I make my defense against all the accusations of the Jews,

26:3 and especially so because you are well acquainted with all the Jewish customs and controversies. Therefore, I beg you to listen to me patiently.

26:4 "The Jews all know the way I have lived ever since I was a child, from the beginning of my life in my own country, and also in Jerusalem.

26:5 They have known me for a long time and can testify, if they are willing, that according to the strictest sect of our religion, I lived as a Pharisee.

26:6 And now it is because of my hope in what God has promised our fathers that I am on trial today.

26:7 This is the promise our twelve tribes are hoping to see fulfilled as they earnestly serve God day and night. O king, it is because of this hope that the Jews are accusing me.

26:8 Why should any of you consider it incredible that God raises the dead?

26:9 "I too was convinced that I ought to do all that was possible to oppose the name of Jesus of Nazareth.

26:10 And that is just what I did in Jerusalem. On the authority of the chief priests I put many of the saints in prison, and when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them.

26:11 Many a time I went from one synagogue to another to have them punished, and I tried to force them to blaspheme. In my obsession against them, I even went to foreign cities to persecute them.

26:12 "On one of these journeys I was going to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests.

26:13 About noon, O king, as I was on the road, I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, blazing around me and my companions.

26:14 We all fell to the ground, and I heard a voice saying to me in Aramaic, 'Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.'

26:15 "Then I asked, 'Who are you, Lord?' "'I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,' the Lord replied.

26:16 'Now get up and stand on your feet. I have appeared to you to appoint you as a servant and as a witness of what you have seen of me and what I will show you.

26:17 I will rescue you from your own people and from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them

26:18 to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.'

26:19 "So then, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the vision from heaven.

26:20 First to those in Damascus, then to those in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and to the Gentiles also, I preached that they should repent and turn to God and prove their repentance by their deeds.

26:21 That is why the Jews seized me in the temple courts and tried to kill me.

26:22 But I have had God's help to this very day, and so I stand here and testify to small and great alike. I am saying nothing beyond what the prophets and Moses said would happen--

26:23 that the Christ would suffer and, as the first to rise from the dead, would proclaim light to his own people and to the Gentiles."

26:24 At this point Festus interrupted Paul's defense. "You are out of your mind, Paul!" he shouted. "Your great learning is driving you insane."

26:25 "I am not insane, most excellent Festus," Paul replied. "What I am saying is true and reasonable.

26:26 The king is familiar with these things, and I can speak freely to him. I am convinced that none of this has escaped his notice, because it was not done in a corner.

26:27 King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know you do."

26:28 Then Agrippa said to Paul, "Do you think that in such a short time you can persuade me to be a Christian?"

26:29 Paul replied, "Short time or long--I pray God that not only you but all who are listening to me today may become what I am, except for these chains."

26:30 The king rose, and with him the governor and Bernice and those sitting with them.

26:31 They left the room, and while talking with one another, they said, "This man is not doing anything that deserves death or imprisonment."

26:32 Agrippa said to Festus, "This man could have been set free if he had not appealed to Caesar."

Jeremiah 36.

36:1 In the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the LORD:

36:2 "Take a scroll and write on it all the words I have spoken to you concerning Israel, Judah and all the other nations from the time I began speaking to you in the reign of Josiah till now.

36:3 Perhaps when the people of Judah hear about every disaster I plan to inflict on them, each of them will turn from his wicked way; then I will forgive their wickedness and their sin."

36:4 So Jeremiah called Baruch son of Neriah, and while Jeremiah dictated all the words the LORD had spoken to him, Baruch wrote them on the scroll.

36:5 Then Jeremiah told Baruch, "I am restricted; I cannot go to the LORD'S temple.

36:6 So you go to the house of the LORD on a day of fasting and read to the people from the scroll the words of the LORD that you wrote as I dictated. Read them to all the people of Judah who come in from their towns.

36:7 Perhaps they will bring their petition before the LORD, and each will turn from his wicked ways, for the anger and wrath pronounced against this people by the LORD are great."

36:8 Baruch son of Neriah did everything Jeremiah the prophet told him to do; at the LORD'S temple he read the words of the LORD from the scroll.

36:9 In the ninth month of the fifth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, a time of fasting before the LORD was proclaimed for all the people in Jerusalem and those who had come from the towns of Judah.

36:10 From the room of Gemariah son of Shaphan the secretary, which was in the upper courtyard at the entrance of the New Gate of the temple, Baruch read to all the people at the LORD'S temple the words of Jeremiah from the scroll.

36:11 When Micaiah son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, heard all the words of the LORD from the scroll,

36:12 he went down to the secretary's room in the royal palace, where all the officials were sitting: Elishama the secretary, Delaiah son of Shemaiah, Elnathan son of Acbor, Gemariah son of Shaphan, Zedekiah son of Hananiah, and all the other officials.

36:13 After Micaiah told them everything he had heard Baruch read to the people from the scroll,

36:14 all the officials sent Jehudi son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to say to Baruch, "Bring the scroll from which you have read to the people and come." So Baruch son of Neriah went to them with the scroll in his hand.

36:15 They said to him, "Sit down, please, and read it to us." So Baruch read it to them.

36:16 When they heard all these words, they looked at each other in fear and said to Baruch, "We must report all these words to the king."

36:17 Then they asked Baruch, "Tell us, how did you come to write all this? Did Jeremiah dictate it?"

36:18 "Yes," Baruch replied, "he dictated all these words to me, and I wrote them in ink on the scroll."

36:19 Then the officials said to Baruch, "You and Jeremiah, go and hide. Don't let anyone know where you are."

36:20 After they put the scroll in the room of Elishama the secretary, they went to the king in the courtyard and reported everything to him.

36:21 The king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and Jehudi brought it from the room of Elishama the secretary and read it to the king and all the officials standing beside him.

36:22 It was the ninth month and the king was sitting in the winter apartment, with a fire burning in the firepot in front of him.

36:23 Whenever Jehudi had read three or four columns of the scroll, the king cut them off with a scribe's knife and threw them into the firepot, until the entire scroll was burned in the fire.

36:24 The king and all his attendants who heard all these words showed no fear, nor did they tear their clothes.

36:25 Even though Elnathan, Delaiah and Gemariah urged the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them.

36:26 Instead, the king commanded Jerahmeel, a son of the king, Seraiah son of Azriel and Shelemiah son of Abdeel to arrest Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet. But the LORD had hidden them.

36:27 After the king burned the scroll containing the words that Baruch had written at Jeremiah's dictation, the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:

36:28 "Take another scroll and write on it all the words that were on the first scroll, which Jehoiakim king of Judah burned up.

36:29 Also tell Jehoiakim king of Judah, 'This is what the LORD says: You burned that scroll and said, "Why did you write on it that the king of Babylon would certainly come and destroy this land and cut off both men and animals from it?"

36:30 Therefore, this is what the LORD says about Jehoiakim king of Judah: He will have no one to sit on the throne of David; his body will be thrown out and exposed to the heat by day and the frost by night.

36:31 I will punish him and his children and his attendants for their wickedness; I will bring on them and those living in Jerusalem and the people of Judah every disaster I pronounced against them, because they have not listened.'"

36:32 So Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to the scribe Baruch son of Neriah, and as Jeremiah dictated, Baruch wrote on it all the words of the scroll that Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire. And many similar words were added to them.

Jeremiah 37.

37:1 Zedekiah son of Josiah was made king of Judah by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; he reigned in place of Jehoiachin son of Jehoiakim.

37:2 Neither he nor his attendants nor the people of the land paid any attention to the words the LORD had spoken through Jeremiah the prophet.

37:3 King Zedekiah, however, sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah with the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah to Jeremiah the prophet with this message: "Please pray to the LORD our God for us."

37:4 Now Jeremiah was free to come and go among the people, for he had not yet been put in prison.

37:5 Pharaoh's army had marched out of Egypt, and when the Babylonians who were besieging Jerusalem heard the report about them, they withdrew from Jerusalem.

37:6 Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet:

37:7 "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of me, 'Pharaoh's army, which has marched out to support you, will go back to its own land, to Egypt.

37:8 Then the Babylonians will return and attack this city; they will capture it and burn it down.'

37:9 "This is what the LORD says: Do not deceive yourselves, thinking, 'The Babylonians will surely leave us.' They will not!

37:10 Even if you were to defeat the entire Babylonian army that is attacking you and only wounded men were left in their tents, they would come out and burn this city down."

37:11 After the Babylonian army had withdrawn from Jerusalem because of Pharaoh's army,

37:12 Jeremiah started to leave the city to go to the territory of Benjamin to get his share of the property among the people there.

37:13 But when he reached the Benjamin Gate, the captain of the guard, whose name was Irijah son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah, arrested him and said, "You are deserting to the Babylonians!"

37:14 "That's not true!" Jeremiah said. "I am not deserting to the Babylonians." But Irijah would not listen to him; instead, he arrested Jeremiah and brought him to the officials.

37:15 They were angry with Jeremiah and had him beaten and imprisoned in the house of Jonathan the secretary, which they had made into a prison.

37:16 Jeremiah was put into a vaulted cell in a dungeon, where he remained a long time.

37:17 Then King Zedekiah sent for him and had him brought to the palace, where he asked him privately, "Is there any word from the LORD?" "Yes," Jeremiah replied, "you will be handed over to the king of Babylon."

37:18 Then Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, "What crime have I committed against you or your officials or this people, that you have put me in prison?

37:19 Where are your prophets who prophesied to you, 'The king of Babylon will not attack you or this land'?

37:20 But now, my lord the king, please listen. Let me bring my petition before you: Do not send me back to the house of Jonathan the secretary, or I will die there."

37:21 King Zedekiah then gave orders for Jeremiah to be placed in the courtyard of the guard and given bread from the street of the bakers each day until all the bread in the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.

Psalms 9.

9:1 I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonders.

9:2 I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.

9:3 My enemies turn back; they stumble and perish before you.

9:4 For you have upheld my right and my cause; you have sat on your throne, judging righteously.

9:5 You have rebuked the nations and destroyed the wicked; you have blotted out their name for ever and ever.

9:6 Endless ruin has overtaken the enemy, you have uprooted their cities; even the memory of them has perished.

9:7 The LORD reigns forever; he has established his throne for judgment.

9:8 He will judge the world in righteousness; he will govern the peoples with justice.

9:9 The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.

9:10 Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you.

9:11 Sing praises to the LORD, enthroned in Zion; proclaim among the nations what he has done.

9:12 For he who avenges blood remembers; he does not ignore the cry of the afflicted.

9:13 O LORD, see how my enemies persecute me! Have mercy and lift me up from the gates of death,

9:14 that I may declare your praises in the gates of the Daughter of Zion and there rejoice in your salvation.

9:15 The nations have fallen into the pit they have dug; their feet are caught in the net they have hidden.

9:16 The LORD is known by his justice; the wicked are ensnared by the work of their hands. Higgaion. Selah

9:17 The wicked return to the grave, all the nations that forget God.

9:18 But the needy will not always be forgotten, nor the hope of the afflicted ever perish.

9:19 Arise, O LORD, let not man triumph; let the nations be judged in your presence.

9:20 Strike them with terror, O LORD; let the nations know they are but men. Selah
