룻기 2 장.

룻2:1 나오미의 남편 엘리멜렉의 친족 중에 유력한 자가 친족으로 있으니 그의 이름은 보아스더라

룻2:2 모압 여인 룻이 나오미에게 이르되 원하건대 내가 밭으로 가서 내가 누구에게 은혜를 입으면 그를 따라서 이삭을 줍겠나이다 하니 나오미가 그에게 이르되 내 딸아 갈지어다 하매

룻2:3 룻이 가서 베는 자를 따라 밭에서 이삭을 줍는데 우연히 엘리멜렉의 친족 보아스에게 속한 밭에 이르렀더라

룻2:4 마침 보아스가 베들레헴에서부터 와서 베는 자들에게 이르되 여호와께서 너희와 함께 하시기를 원하노라 하니 그들이 대답하되 여호와께서 당신에게 복 주시기를 원하나이다 하니라

룻2:5 보아스가 베는 자들을 거느린 사환에게 이르되 이는 누구의 소녀냐 하니

룻2:6 베는 자를 거느린 사환이 대답하여 이르되 이는 나오미와 함께 모압 지방에서 돌아온 모압 소녀인데

룻2:7 그의 말이 나로 베는 자를 따라 단 사이에서 이삭을 줍게 하소서 하였고 아침부터 와서는 잠시 집에서 쉰 외에 지금까지 계속하는 중이니이다

룻2:8 보아스가 룻에게 이르되 내 딸아 들으라 이삭을 주우러 다른 밭으로 가지 말며 여기서 떠나지 말고 나의 소녀들과 함께 있으라

룻2:9 그들이 베는 밭을 보고 그들을 따르라 내가 그 소년들에게 명령하여 너를 건드리지 말라 하였느니라 목이 마르거든 그릇에 가서 소년들이 길어 온 것을 마실지니라 하는지라

룻2:10 룻이 엎드려 얼굴을 땅에 대고 절하며 그에게 이르되 나는 이방 여인이거늘 당신이 어찌하여 내게 은혜를 베푸시며 나를 돌보시나이까 하니

룻2:11 보아스가 그에게 대답하여 이르되 네 남편이 죽은 후로 네가 시어머니에게 행한 모든 것과 네 부모와 고국을 떠나 전에 알지 못하던 백성에게로 온 일이 내게 분명히 알려졌느니라

룻2:12 여호와께서 네가 행한 일에 보답하시기를 원하며 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께서 그의 날개 아래에 보호를 받으러 온 네게 온전한 상 주시기를 원하노라 하는지라

룻2:13 룻이 이르되 내 주여 내가 당신께 은혜 입기를 원하나이다 나는 당신의 하녀 중의 하나와도 같지 못하오나 당신이 이 하녀를 위로하시고 마음을 기쁘게 하는 말씀을 하셨나이다 하니라

룻2:14 식사할 때에 보아스가 룻에게 이르되 이리로 와서 떡을 먹으며 네 떡 조각을 초에 찍으라 하므로 룻이 곡식 베는 자 곁에 앉으니 그가 볶은 곡식을 주매 룻이 배불리 먹고 남았더라

룻2:15 룻이 이삭을 주우러 일어날 때에 보아스가 자기 소년들에게 명령하여 이르되 그에게 곡식 단 사이에서 줍게 하고 책망하지 말며

룻2:16 또 그를 위하여 곡식 다발에서 조금씩 뽑아 버려서 그에게 줍게 하고 꾸짖지 말라 하니라

룻2:17 룻이 밭에서 저녁까지 줍고 그 주운 것을 떠니 보리가 한 에바쯤 되는지라

룻2:18 그것을 가지고 성읍에 들어가서 시어머니에게 그 주운 것을 보이고 그가 배불리 먹고 남긴 것을 내어 시어머니에게 드리매

룻2:19 시어머니가 그에게 이르되 오늘 어디서 주웠느냐 어디서 일을 하였느냐 너를 돌본 자에게 복이 있기를 원하노라 하니 룻이 누구에게서 일한 것을 시어머니에게 알게 하여 이르되 오늘 일하게 한 사람의 이름은 보아스니이다 하는지라

룻2:20 나오미가 자기 며느리에게 이르되 그가 여호와로부터 복 받기를 원하노라 그가 살아 있는 자와 죽은 자에게 은혜 베풀기를 그치지 아니하도다 하고 나오미가 또 그에게 이르되 그 사람은 우리와 가까우니 우리 기업을 무를 자 중의 하나이니라 하니라

룻2:21 모압 여인 룻이 이르되 그가 내게 또 이르기를 내 추수를 다 마치기까지 너는 내 소년들에게 가까이 있으라 하더이다 하니

룻2:22 나오미가 며느리 룻에게 이르되 내 딸아 너는 그의 소녀들과 함께 나가고 다른 밭에서 사람을 만나지 아니하는 것이 좋으니라 하는지라

룻2:23 이에 룻이 보아스의 소녀들에게 가까이 있어서 보리 추수와 밀 추수를 마치기까지 이삭을 주우며 그의 시어머니와 함께 거주하니라

사도행전 27 장.

행27:1 우리가 배를 타고 이달리야에 가기로 작정되매 바울과 다른 죄수 몇 사람을 아구스도 대의 백부장 율리오란 사람에게 맡기니

행27:2 아시아 해변 각처로 가려 하는 아드라뭇데노 배에 우리가 올라 항해할새 마게도냐의 데살로니가 사람 아리스다고도 함께 하니라

행27:3 이튿날 시돈에 대니 율리오가 바울을 친절히 대하여 친구들에게 가서 대접 받기를 허락하더니

행27:4 또 거기서 우리가 떠나가다가 맞바람을 피하여 구브로 해안을 의지하고 항해하여

행27:5 길리기아와 밤빌리아 바다를 건너 루기아의 무라 시에 이르러

행27:6 거기서 백부장이 이달리야로 가려 하는 알렉산드리아 배를 만나 우리를 오르게 하니

행27:7 배가 더디 가 여러 날 만에 간신히 니도 맞은편에 이르러 풍세가 더 허락하지 아니하므로 살모네 앞을 지나 그레데 해안을 바람막이로 항해하여

행27:8 간신히 그 연안을 지나 미항이라는 곳에 이르니 라새아 시에서 가깝더라

행27:9 여러 날이 걸려 금식하는 절기가 이미 지났으므로 항해하기가 위태한지라 바울이 그들을 권하여

행27:10 말하되 여러분이여 내가 보니 이번 항해가 하물과 배만 아니라 우리 생명에도 타격과 많은 손해를 끼치리라 하되

행27:11 백부장이 선장과 선주의 말을 바울의 말보다 더 믿더라

행27:12 그 항구가 겨울을 지내기에 불편하므로 거기서 떠나 아무쪼록 뵈닉스에 가서 겨울을 지내자 하는 자가 더 많으니 뵈닉스는 그레데 항구라 한 쪽은 서남을, 한 쪽은 서북을 향하였더라

행27:13 남풍이 순하게 불매 그들이 뜻을 이룬 줄 알고 닻을 감아 그레데 해변을 끼고 항해하더니

행27:14 얼마 안 되어 섬 가운데로부터 유라굴로라는 광풍이 크게 일어나니

행27:15 배가 밀려 바람을 맞추어 갈 수 없어 가는 대로 두고 쫓겨가다가

행27:16 가우다라는 작은 섬 아래로 지나 간신히 거루를 잡아

행27:17 끌어 올리고 줄을 가지고 선체를 둘러 감고 스르디스에 걸릴까 두려워하여 연장을 내리고 그냥 쫓겨가더니

행27:18 우리가 풍랑으로 심히 애쓰다가 이튿날 사공들이 짐을 바다에 풀어 버리고

행27:19 사흘째 되는 날에 배의 기구를 그들 손으로 내버리니라

행27:20 여러 날 동안 해도 별도 보이지 아니하고 큰 풍랑이 그대로 있으매 구원의 여망마저 없어졌더라

행27:21 여러 사람이 오래 먹지 못하였으매 바울이 가운데 서서 말하되 여러분이여 내 말을 듣고 그레데에서 떠나지 아니하여 이 타격과 손상을 면하였더라면 좋을 뻔하였느니라

행27:22 내가 너희를 권하노니 이제는 안심하라 너희 중 아무도 생명에는 아무런 손상이 없겠고 오직 배뿐이리라

행27:23 나의 속한 바 곧 나의 섬기는 하나님의 사자가 어제 밤에 내 곁에 서서 말하되

행27:24 바울아 두려워하지 말라 네가 가이사 앞에 서야 하겠고 또 하나님께서 너와 함께 항해하는 자를 다 네게 주셨다 하였으니

행27:25 그러므로 여러분이여 안심하라 나는 내게 말씀하신 그대로 되리라고 하나님을 믿노라

행27:26 그런즉 우리가 반드시 한 섬에 걸리리라 하더라

행27:27 열나흘째 되는 날 밤에 우리가 아드리아 바다에서 이리저리 쫓겨가다가 자정쯤 되어 사공들이 어느 육지에 가까워지는 줄을 짐작하고

행27:28 물을 재어 보니 스무 길이 되고 조금 가다가 다시 재니 열다섯 길이라

행27:29 암초에 걸릴까 하여 고물로 닻 넷을 내리고 날이 새기를 고대하니라

행27:30 사공들이 도망하고자 하여 이물에서 닻을 내리는 체하고 거룻배를 바다에 내려 놓거늘

행27:31 바울이 백부장과 군인들에게 이르되 이 사람들이 배에 있지 아니하면 너희가 구원을 얻지 못하리라 하니

행27:32 이에 군사들이 거룻줄을 끊어 떼어 버리니라

행27:33 날이 새어 가매 바울이 여러 사람에게 음식 먹기를 권하여 이르되 너희가 기다리고 기다리며 먹지 못하고 주린 지가 오늘까지 열나흘인즉

행27:34 음식 먹기를 권하노니 이것이 너희의 구원을 위하는 것이요 너희 중 머리카락 하나도 잃을 자가 없으리라 하고

행27:35 떡을 가져다가 모든 사람 앞에서 하나님께 축사하고 떼어 먹기를 시작하매

행27:36 그들도 다 안심하고 받아 먹으니

행27:37 배에 있는 우리의 수는 전부 이백칠십육 명이더라

행27:38 배부르게 먹고 밀을 바다에 버려 배를 가볍게 하였더니

행27:39 날이 새매 어느 땅인지 알지 못하나 경사진 해안으로 된 항만이 눈에 띄거늘 배를 거기에 들여다 댈 수 있는가 의논한 후

행27:40 닻을 끊어 바다에 버리는 동시에 키를 풀어 늦추고 돛을 달고 바람에 맞추어 해안을 향하여 들어가다가

행27:41 두 물이 합하여 흐르는 곳을 만나 배를 걸매 이물은 부딪혀 움직일 수 없이 붙고 고물은 큰 물결에 깨어져 가니

행27:42 군사들은 죄수가 헤엄쳐서 도망할까 하여 그들을 죽이는 것이 좋다 하였으나

행27:43 백부장이 바울을 구원하려 하여 그들의 뜻을 막고 헤엄칠 줄 아는 사람들을 명하여 물에 뛰어내려 먼저 육지에 나가게 하고

행27:44 그 남은 사람들은 널조각 혹은 배 물건에 의지하여 나가게 하니 마침내 사람들이 다 상륙하여 구조되니라

예레미야 38 장.

렘38:1 맛단의 아들 스바댜와 바스훌의 아들 그다랴와 셀레마의 아들 유갈과 말기야의 아들 바스훌이 예레미야가 모든 백성에게 이르는 말을 들은즉 이르기를

렘38:2 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시되 이 성에 머무는 자는 칼과 기근과 전염병에 죽으리라 그러나 갈대아인에게 항복하는 자는 살리니 그는 노략물을 얻음 같이 자기의 목숨을 건지리라

렘38:3 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시니라 이 성이 반드시 바벨론의 왕의 군대의 손에 넘어가리니 그가 차지하리라 하셨다 하는지라

렘38:4 이에 그 고관들이 왕께 아뢰되 이 사람이 백성의 평안을 구하지 아니하고 재난을 구하오니 청하건대 이 사람을 죽이소서 그가 이같이 말하여 이 성에 남은 군사의 손과 모든 백성의 손을 약하게 하나이다

렘38:5 시드기야 왕이 이르되 보라 그가 너희 손 안에 있느니라 왕은 조금도 너희를 거스를 수 없느니라 하는지라

렘38:6 그들이 예레미야를 끌어다가 감옥 뜰에 있는 왕의 아들 말기야의 구덩이에 던져 넣을 때에 예레미야를 줄로 달아내렸는데 그 구덩이에는 물이 없고 진창뿐이므로 예레미야가 진창 속에 빠졌더라

렘38:7 왕궁 내시 구스인 에벳멜렉이 그들이 예레미야를 구덩이에 던져 넣었음을 들으니라 그 때에 왕이 베냐민 문에 앉았더니

렘38:8 에벳멜렉이 왕궁에서 나와 왕께 아뢰어 이르되

렘38:9 내 주 왕이여 저 사람들이 선지자 예레미야에게 행한 모든 일은 악하니이다 성중에 떡이 떨어졌거늘 그들이 그를 구덩이에 던져 넣었으니 그가 거기에서 굶어 죽으리이다 하니

렘38:10 왕이 구스 사람 에벳멜렉에게 명령하여 이르되 너는 여기서 삼십 명을 데리고 가서 선지자 예레미야가 죽기 전에 그를 구덩이에서 끌어내라

렘38:11 에벳멜렉이 사람들을 데리고 왕궁 곳간 밑 방에 들어가서 거기에서 헝겊과 낡은 옷을 가져다가 그것을 구덩이에 있는 예레미야에게 밧줄로 내리며

렘38:12 구스인 에벳멜렉이 예레미야에게 이르되 당신은 이 헝겊과 낡은 옷을 당신의 겨드랑이에 대고 줄을 그 아래에 대시오 예레미야가 그대로 하매

렘38:13 그들이 줄로 예레미야를 구덩이에서 끌어낸지라 예레미야가 시위대 뜰에 머무니라

렘38:14 시드기야 왕이 사람을 보내어 선지자 예레미야를 여호와의 성전 셋째 문으로 데려오게 하고 왕이 예레미야에게 이르되 내가 네게 한 가지 일을 물으리니 한 마디도 내게 숨기지 말라

렘38:15 예레미야가 시드기야에게 이르되 내가 이 일을 왕에게 아시게 하여도 왕이 결코 나를 죽이지 아니하시리이까 가령 내가 왕을 권한다 할지라도 왕이 듣지 아니하시리이다

렘38:16 시드기야 왕이 비밀히 예레미야에게 맹세하여 이르되 우리에게 이 영혼을 지으신 여호와께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하노니 내가 너를 죽이지도 아니하겠으며 네 생명을 찾는 그 사람들의 손에 넘기지도 아니하리라 하는지라

렘38:17 예레미야가 시드기야에게 이르되 만군의 하나님이신 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시되 네가 만일 바벨론의 왕의 고관들에게 항복하면 네 생명이 살겠고 이 성이 불사름을 당하지 아니하겠고 너와 네 가족이 살려니와

렘38:18 네가 만일 나가서 바벨론의 왕의 고관들에게 항복하지 아니하면 이 성이 갈대아인의 손에 넘어가리니 그들이 이 성을 불사를 것이며 너는 그들의 손을 벗어나지 못하리라 하셨나이다

렘38:19 시드기야 왕이 예레미야에게 이르되 나는 갈대아인에게 항복한 유다인을 두려워하노라 염려하건대 갈대아인이 나를 그들의 손에 넘기면 그들이 나를 조롱할까 하노라 하는지라

렘38:20 예레미야가 이르되 그 무리가 왕을 그들에게 넘기지 아니하리이다 원하옵나니 내가 왕에게 아뢴 바 여호와의 목소리에 순종하소서 그리하면 왕이 복을 받아 생명을 보전하시리이다

렘38:21 그러나 만일 항복하기를 거절하시면 여호와께서 내게 보이신 말씀대로 되리이다

렘38:22 보라 곧 유다 왕궁에 남아 있는 모든 여자가 바벨론 왕의 고관들에게로 끌려갈 것이요 그 여자들은 네게 말하기를 네 친구들이 너를 꾀어 이기고 네 발이 진흙에 빠짐을 보고 물러갔도다 하리라

렘38:23 네 아내들과 자녀는 갈대아인에게로 끌려가겠고 너는 그들의 손에서 벗어나지 못하고 바벨론 왕의 손에 잡히리라 또 네가 이 성읍으로 불사름을 당하게 하리라 하셨나이다

렘38:24 시드기야가 예레미야에게 이르되 너는 이 말을 어느 사람에게도 알리지 말라 그리하면 네가 죽지 아니하리라

렘38:25 만일 고관들이 내가 너와 말하였다 함을 듣고 와서 네게 말하기를 네가 왕에게 말씀한 것을 우리에게 전하라 우리에게 숨기지 말라 그리하면 우리가 너를 죽이지 아니하리라 또 왕이 네게 말씀한 것을 전하라 하거든

렘38:26 그들에게 대답하되 내가 왕 앞에 간구하기를 나를 요나단의 집으로 되돌려 보내지 마소서 그리하여 거기서 죽지 않게 하옵소서 하였다 하라 하니라

렘38:27 모든 고관이 예레미야에게 와서 물으매 그가 왕이 명령한 모든 말대로 대답하였으므로 일이 탄로되지 아니하였고 그들은 그와 더불어 말하기를 그쳤더라

렘38:28 예레미야가 예루살렘이 함락되는 날까지 감옥 뜰에 머물렀더라

시편 10 장.

시10:1 여호와여 어찌하여 멀리 서시며 어찌하여 환난 때에 숨으시나이까

시10:2 악한 자가 교만하여 가련한 자를 심히 압박하오니 그들이 자기가 베푼 죄에 빠지게 하소서

시10:3 악인은 그의 마음의 욕심을 자랑하며 탐욕을 부리는 자는 여호와를 배반하여 멸시하나이다

시10:4 악인은 그의 교만한 얼굴로 말하기를 여호와께서 이를 감찰하지 아니하신다 하며 그의 모든 사상에 하나님이 없다 하나이다

시10:5 그의 길은 언제든지 견고하고 주의 심판은 높아서 그에게 미치지 못하오니 그는 그의 모든 대적들을 멸시하며

시10:6 그의 마음에 이르기를 나는 흔들리지 아니하며 대대로 환난을 당하지 아니하리라 하나이다

시10:7 그의 입에는 저주와 거짓과 포악이 충만하며 그의 혀 밑에는 잔해와 죄악이 있나이다

시10:8 그가 마을 구석진 곳에 앉으며 그 은밀한 곳에서 무죄한 자를 죽이며 그의 눈은 가련한 자를 엿보나이다

시10:9 사자가 자기의 굴에 엎드림 같이 그가 은밀한 곳에 엎드려 가련한 자를 잡으려고 기다리며 자기 그물을 끌어당겨 가련한 자를 잡나이다

시10:10 그가 구푸려 엎드리니 그의 포악으로 말미암아 가련한 자들이 넘어지나이다

시10:11 그가 그의 마음에 이르기를 하나님이 잊으셨고 그의 얼굴을 가리셨으니 영원히 보지 아니하시리라 하나이다

시10:12 여호와여 일어나옵소서 하나님이여 손을 드옵소서 가난한 자들을 잊지 마옵소서

시10:13 어찌하여 악인이 하나님을 멸시하여 그의 마음에 이르기를 주는 감찰하지 아니하리라 하나이까

시10:14 주께서는 보셨나이다 주는 재앙과 원한을 감찰하시고 주의 손으로 갚으려 하시오니 외로운 자가 주를 의지하나이다 주는 벌써부터 고아를 도우시는 이시니이다

시10:15 악인의 팔을 꺾으소서 악한 자의 악을 더 이상 찾아낼 수 없을 때까지 찾으소서

시10:16 여호와께서는 영원무궁하도록 왕이시니 이방 나라들이 주의 땅에서 멸망하였나이다

시10:17 여호와여 주는 겸손한 자의 소원을 들으셨사오니 그들의 마음을 준비하시며 귀를 기울여 들으시고

시10:18 고아와 압제 당하는 자를 위하여 심판하사 세상에 속한 자가 다시는 위협하지 못하게 하시리이다

Ruth 2.

2:1 Now Naomi had a relative on her husband's side, from the clan of Elimelech, a man of standing, whose name was Boaz.

2:2 And Ruth the Moabitess said to Naomi, "Let me go to the fields and pick up the leftover grain behind anyone in whose eyes I find favor." Naomi said to her, "Go ahead, my daughter."

2:3 So she went out and began to glean in the fields behind the harvesters. As it turned out, she found herself working in a field belonging to Boaz, who was from the clan of Elimelech.

2:4 Just then Boaz arrived from Bethlehem and greeted the harvesters, "The LORD be with you!" "The LORD bless you!" they called back.

2:5 Boaz asked the foreman of his harvesters, "Whose young woman is that?"

2:6 The foreman replied, "She is the Moabitess who came back from Moab with Naomi.

2:7 She said, 'Please let me glean and gather among the sheaves behind the harvesters.' She went into the field and has worked steadily from morning till now, except for a short rest in the shelter."

2:8 So Boaz said to Ruth, "My daughter, listen to me. Don't go and glean in another field and don't go away from here. Stay here with my servant girls.

2:9 Watch the field where the men are harvesting, and follow along after the girls. I have told the men not to touch you. And whenever you are thirsty, go and get a drink from the water jars the men have filled."

2:10 At this, she bowed down with her face to the ground. She exclaimed, "Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you notice me--a foreigner?"

2:11 Boaz replied, "I've been told all about what you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband--how you left your father and mother and your homeland and came to live with a people you did not know before.

2:12 May the LORD repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge."

2:13 "May I continue to find favor in your eyes, my lord," she said. "You have given me comfort and have spoken kindly to your servant--though I do not have the standing of one of your servant girls."

2:14 At mealtime Boaz said to her, "Come over here. Have some bread and dip it in the wine vinegar." When she sat down with the harvesters, he offered her some roasted grain. She ate all she wanted and had some left over.

2:15 As she got up to glean, Boaz gave orders to his men, "Even if she gathers among the sheaves, don't embarrass her.

2:16 Rather, pull out some stalks for her from the bundles and leave them for her to pick up, and don't rebuke her."

2:17 So Ruth gleaned in the field until evening. Then she threshed the barley she had gathered, and it amounted to about an ephah.

2:18 She carried it back to town, and her mother-in-law saw how much she had gathered. Ruth also brought out and gave her what she had left over after she had eaten enough.

2:19 Her mother-in-law asked her, "Where did you glean today? Where did you work? Blessed be the man who took notice of you!" Then Ruth told her mother-in-law about the one at whose place she had been working. "The name of the man I worked with today is Boaz," she said.

2:20 "The LORD bless him!" Naomi said to her daughter-in-law. "He has not stopped showing his kindness to the living and the dead." She added, "That man is our close relative; he is one of our kinsman-redeemers."

2:21 Then Ruth the Moabitess said, "He even said to me, 'Stay with my workers until they finish harvesting all my grain.'"

2:22 Naomi said to Ruth her daughter-in-law, "It will be good for you, my daughter, to go with his girls, because in someone else's field you might be harmed."

2:23 So Ruth stayed close to the servant girls of Boaz to glean until the barley and wheat harvests were finished. And she lived with her mother-in-law.

Acts (of the Apostles) 27.

27:1 When it was decided that we would sail for Italy, Paul and some other prisoners were handed over to a centurion named Julius, who belonged to the Imperial Regiment.

27:2 We boarded a ship from Adramyttium about to sail for ports along the coast of the province of Asia, and we put out to sea. Aristarchus, a Macedonian from Thessalonica, was with us.

27:3 The next day we landed at Sidon; and Julius, in kindness to Paul, allowed him to go to his friends so they might provide for his needs.

27:4 From there we put out to sea again and passed to the lee of Cyprus because the winds were against us.

27:5 When we had sailed across the open sea off the coast of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we landed at Myra in Lycia.

27:6 There the centurion found an Alexandrian ship sailing for Italy and put us on board.

27:7 We made slow headway for many days and had difficulty arriving off Cnidus. When the wind did not allow us to hold our course, we sailed to the lee of Crete, opposite Salmone.

27:8 We moved along the coast with difficulty and came to a place called Fair Havens, near the town of Lasea.

27:9 Much time had been lost, and sailing had already become dangerous because by now it was after the Fast. So Paul warned them,

27:10 "Men, I can see that our voyage is going to be disastrous and bring great loss to ship and cargo, and to our own lives also."

27:11 But the centurion, instead of listening to what Paul said, followed the advice of the pilot and of the owner of the ship.

27:12 Since the harbor was unsuitable to winter in, the majority decided that we should sail on, hoping to reach Phoenix and winter there. This was a harbor in Crete, facing both southwest and northwest.

27:13 When a gentle south wind began to blow, they thought they had obtained what they wanted; so they weighed anchor and sailed along the shore of Crete.

27:14 Before very long, a wind of hurricane force, called the "northeaster," swept down from the island.

27:15 The ship was caught by the storm and could not head into the wind; so we gave way to it and were driven along.

27:16 As we passed to the lee of a small island called Cauda, we were hardly able to make the lifeboat secure.

27:17 When the men had hoisted it aboard, they passed ropes under the ship itself to hold it together. Fearing that they would run aground on the sandbars of Syrtis, they lowered the sea anchor and let the ship be driven along.

27:18 We took such a violent battering from the storm that the next day they began to throw the cargo overboard.

27:19 On the third day, they threw the ship's tackle overboard with their own hands.

27:20 When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and the storm continued raging, we finally gave up all hope of being saved.

27:21 After the men had gone a long time without food, Paul stood up before them and said: "Men, you should have taken my advice not to sail from Crete; then you would have spared yourselves this damage and loss.

27:22 But now I urge you to keep up your courage, because not one of you will be lost; only the ship will be destroyed.

27:23 Last night an angel of the God whose I am and whom I serve stood beside me

27:24 and said, 'Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand trial before Caesar; and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you.'

27:25 So keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God that it will happen just as he told me.

27:26 Nevertheless, we must run aground on some island."

27:27 On the fourteenth night we were still being driven across the Adriatic Sea, when about midnight the sailors sensed they were approaching land.

27:28 They took soundings and found that the water was a hundred and twenty feet deep. A short time later they took soundings again and found it was ninety feet deep.

27:29 Fearing that we would be dashed against the rocks, they dropped four anchors from the stern and prayed for daylight.

27:30 In an attempt to escape from the ship, the sailors let the lifeboat down into the sea, pretending they were going to lower some anchors from the bow.

27:31 Then Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, "Unless these men stay with the ship, you cannot be saved."

27:32 So the soldiers cut the ropes that held the lifeboat and let it fall away.

27:33 Just before dawn Paul urged them all to eat. "For the last fourteen days," he said, "you have been in constant suspense and have gone without food--you haven't eaten anything.

27:34 Now I urge you to take some food. You need it to survive. Not one of you will lose a single hair from his head."

27:35 After he said this, he took some bread and gave thanks to God in front of them all. Then he broke it and began to eat.

27:36 They were all encouraged and ate some food themselves.

27:37 Altogether there were 276 of us on board.

27:38 When they had eaten as much as they wanted, they lightened the ship by throwing the grain into the sea.

27:39 When daylight came, they did not recognize the land, but they saw a bay with a sandy beach, where they decided to run the ship aground if they could.

27:40 Cutting loose the anchors, they left them in the sea and at the same time untied the ropes that held the rudders. Then they hoisted the foresail to the wind and made for the beach.

27:41 But the ship struck a sandbar and ran aground. The bow stuck fast and would not move, and the stern was broken to pieces by the pounding of the surf.

27:42 The soldiers planned to kill the prisoners to prevent any of them from swimming away and escaping.

27:43 But the centurion wanted to spare Paul's life and kept them from carrying out their plan. He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and get to land.

27:44 The rest were to get there on planks or on pieces of the ship. In this way everyone reached land in safety.

Jeremiah 38.

38:1 Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jehucal son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur son of Malkijah heard what Jeremiah was telling all the people when he said,

38:2 "This is what the LORD says: 'Whoever stays in this city will die by the sword, famine or plague, but whoever goes over to the Babylonians will live. He will escape with his life; he will live.'

38:3 And this is what the LORD says: 'This city will certainly be handed over to the army of the king of Babylon, who will capture it.'"

38:4 Then the officials said to the king, "This man should be put to death. He is discouraging the soldiers who are left in this city, as well as all the people, by the things he is saying to them. This man is not seeking the good of these people but their ruin."

38:5 "He is in your hands," King Zedekiah answered. "The king can do nothing to oppose you."

38:6 So they took Jeremiah and put him into the cistern of Malkijah, the king's son, which was in the courtyard of the guard. They lowered Jeremiah by ropes into the cistern; it had no water in it, only mud, and Jeremiah sank down into the mud.

38:7 But Ebed-Melech, a Cushite, an official in the royal palace, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern. While the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate,

38:8 Ebed-Melech went out of the palace and said to him,

38:9 "My lord the king, these men have acted wickedly in all they have done to Jeremiah the prophet. They have thrown him into a cistern, where he will starve to death when there is no longer any bread in the city."

38:10 Then the king commanded Ebed-Melech the Cushite, "Take thirty men from here with you and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies."

38:11 So Ebed-Melech took the men with him and went to a room under the treasury in the palace. He took some old rags and worn-out clothes from there and let them down with ropes to Jeremiah in the cistern.

38:12 Ebed-Melech the Cushite said to Jeremiah, "Put these old rags and worn-out clothes under your arms to pad the ropes." Jeremiah did so,

38:13 and they pulled him up with the ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.

38:14 Then King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the prophet and had him brought to the third entrance to the temple of the LORD. "I am going to ask you something," the king said to Jeremiah. "Do not hide anything from me."

38:15 Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, "If I give you an answer, will you not kill me? Even if I did give you counsel, you would not listen to me."

38:16 But King Zedekiah swore this oath secretly to Jeremiah: "As surely as the LORD lives, who has given us breath, I will neither kill you nor hand you over to those who are seeking your life."

38:17 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, "This is what the LORD God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: 'If you surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, your life will be spared and this city will not be burned down; you and your family will live.

38:18 But if you will not surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, this city will be handed over to the Babylonians and they will burn it `own; you yourself will not escape from their hands.'"

38:19 King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, "I am afraid of the Jews who have gone over to the Babylonians, for the Babylonians may hand me over to them and they will mistreat me."

38:20 "They will not hand you over," Jeremiah replied. "Obey the LORD by doing what I tell you. Then it will go well with you, and your life will be spared.

38:21 But if you refuse to surrender, this is what the LORD has revealed to me:

38:22 All the women left in the palace of the king of Judah will be brought out to the officials of the king of Babylon. Those women will say to you: "'They misled you and overcame you--those trusted friends of yours. Your feet are sunk in the mud; your friends have deserted you.'

38:23 "All your wives and children will be brought out to the Babylonians. You yourself will not escape from their hands but will be captured by the king of Babylon; and this city will be burned down."

38:24 Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, "Do not let anyone know about this conversation, or you may die.

38:25 If the officials hear that I talked with you, and they come to you and say, 'Tell us what you said to the king and what the king said to you; do not hide it from us or we will kill you,'

38:26 then tell them, 'I was pleading with the king not to send me back to Jonathan's house to die there.'"

38:27 All the officials did come to Jeremiah and question him, and he told them everything the king had ordered him to say. So they said no more to him, for no one had heard his conversation with the king.

38:28 And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard until the day Jerusalem was captured. This is how Jerusalem was taken:

Psalms 10.

10:1 Why, O LORD, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?

10:2 In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises.

10:3 He boasts of the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD.

10:4 In his pride the wicked does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God.

10:5 His ways are always prosperous; he is haughty and your laws are far from him; he sneers at all his enemies.

10:6 He says to himself, "Nothing will shake me; I'll always be happy and never have trouble."

10:7 His mouth is full of curses and lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue.

10:8 He lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent, watching in secret for his victims.

10:9 He lies in wait like a lion in cover; he lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.

10:10 His victims are crushed, they collapse; they fall under his strength.

10:11 He says to himself, "God has forgotten; he covers his face and never sees."

10:12 Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless.

10:13 Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, "He won't call me to account"?

10:14 But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.

10:15 Break the arm of the wicked and evil man; call him to account for his wickedness that would not be found out.

10:16 The LORD is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land.

10:17 You hear, O LORD, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry,

10:18 defending the fatherless and the oppressed, in order that man, who is of the earth, may terrify no more.
