사무엘상 1 장.

삼상1:1 에브라임 산지 라마다임소빔에 에브라임 사람 엘가나라 하는 사람이 있었으니 그는 여로함의 아들이요 엘리후의 손자요 도후의 증손이요 숩의 현손이더라

삼상1:2 그에게 두 아내가 있었으니 한 사람의 이름은 한나요 한 사람의 이름은 브닌나라 브닌나에게는 자식이 있고 한나에게는 자식이 없었더라

삼상1:3 이 사람이 매년 자기 성읍에서 나와서 실로에 올라가서 만군의 여호와께 예배하며 제사를 드렸는데 엘리의 두 아들 홉니와 비느하스가 여호와의 제사장으로 거기에 있었더라

삼상1:4 엘가나가 제사를 드리는 날에는 제물의 분깃을 그의 아내 브닌나와 그의 모든 자녀에게 주고

삼상1:5 한나에게는 갑절을 주니 이는 그를 사랑함이라 그러나 여호와께서 그에게 임신하지 못하게 하시니

삼상1:6 여호와께서 그에게 임신하지 못하게 하시므로 그의 적수인 브닌나가 그를 심히 격분하게 하여 괴롭게 하더라

삼상1:7 매년 한나가 여호와의 집에 올라갈 때마다 남편이 그같이 하매 브닌나가 그를 격분시키므로 그가 울고 먹지 아니하니

삼상1:8 그의 남편 엘가나가 그에게 이르되 한나여 어찌하여 울며 어찌하여 먹지 아니하며 어찌하여 그대의 마음이 슬프냐 내가 그대에게 열 아들보다 낫지 아니하냐 하니라

삼상1:9 그들이 실로에서 먹고 마신 후에 한나가 일어나니 그 때에 제사장 엘리는 여호와의 전 문설주 곁 의자에 앉아 있었더라

삼상1:10 한나가 마음이 괴로워서 여호와께 기도하고 통곡하며

삼상1:11 서원하여 이르되 만군의 여호와여 만일 주의 여종의 고통을 돌보시고 나를 기억하사 주의 여종을 잊지 아니하시고 주의 여종에게 아들을 주시면 내가 그의 평생에 그를 여호와께 드리고 삭도를 그의 머리에 대지 아니하겠나이다

삼상1:12 그가 여호와 앞에 오래 기도하는 동안에 엘리가 그의 입을 주목한즉

삼상1:13 한나가 속으로 말하매 입술만 움직이고 음성은 들리지 아니 하므로 엘리는 그가 취한 줄로 생각한지라

삼상1:14 엘리가 그에게 이르되 네가 언제까지 취하여 있겠느냐 포도주를 끊으라 하니

삼상1:15 한나가 대답하여 이르되 내 주여 그렇지 아니하니이다 나는 마음이 슬픈 여자라 포도주나 독주를 마신 것이 아니요 여호와 앞에 내 심정을 통한 것뿐이오니

삼상1:16 당신의 여종을 악한 여자로 여기지 마옵소서 내가 지금까지 말한 것은 나의 원통함과 격분됨이 많기 때문이니이다 하는지라

삼상1:17 엘리가 대답하여 이르되 평안히 가라 이스라엘의 하나님이 네가 기도하여 구한 것을 허락하시기를 원하노라 하니

삼상1:18 이르되 당신의 여종이 당신께 은혜 입기를 원하나이다 하고 가서 먹고 얼굴에 다시는 근심 빛이 없더라

삼상1:19 그들이 아침에 일찍이 일어나 여호와 앞에 경배하고 돌아가 라마의 자기 집에 이르니라 엘가나가 그의 아내 한나와 동침하매 여호와께서 그를 생각하신지라

삼상1:20 한나가 임신하고 때가 이르매 아들을 낳아 사무엘이라 이름하였으니 이는 내가 여호와께 그를 구하였다 함이더라

삼상1:21 그 사람 엘가나와 그의 온 집이 여호와께 매년제와 서원제를 드리러 올라갈 때에

삼상1:22 오직 한나는 올라가지 아니하고 그의 남편에게 이르되 아이를 젖 떼거든 내가 그를 데리고 가서 여호와 앞에 뵙게 하고 거기에 영원히 있게 하리이다 하니

삼상1:23 그의 남편 엘가나가 그에게 이르되 그대의 소견에 좋은 대로하여 그를 젖 떼기까지 기다리라 오직 여호와께서 그의 말씀대로 이루시기를 원하노라 하니라 이에 그 여자가 그의 아들을 양육하며 그가 젖 떼기까지 기다리다가

삼상1:24 젖을 뗀 후에 그를 데리고 올라갈새 수소 세 마리와 밀가루 한 에바와 포도주 한 가죽부대를 가지고 실로 여호와의 집에 나아갔는데 아이가 어리더라

삼상1:25 그들이 수소를 잡고 아이를 데리고 엘리에게 가서

삼상1:26 한나가 이르되 내 주여 당신의 사심으로 맹세하나이다 나는 여기서 내 주 당신 곁에 서서 여호와께 기도하던 여자라

삼상1:27 이 아이를 위하여 내가 기도하였더니 내가 구하여 기도한 바를 여호와께서 내게 허락하신지라

삼상1:28 그러므로 나도 그를 여호와께 드리되 그의 평생을 여호와께 드리나이다 하고 그가 거기서 여호와께 경배하니라

로 마 서 1 장.

롬1:1 예수 그리스도의 종 바울은 사도로 부르심을 받아 하나님의 복음을 위하여 택정함을 입었으니

롬1:2 이 복음은 하나님이 선지자들을 통하여 그의 아들에 관하여 성경에 미리 약속하신 것이라

롬1:3 그의 아들에 관하여 말하면 육신으로는 다윗의 혈통에서 나셨고

롬1:4 성결의 영으로는 죽은 자들 가운데서 부활하사 능력으로 하나님의 아들로 선포되셨으니 곧 우리 주 예수 그리스도시니라

롬1:5 그로 말미암아 우리가 은혜와 사도의 직분을 받아 그의 이름을 위하여 모든 이방인 중에서 믿어 순종하게 하나니

롬1:6 너희도 그들 중에서 예수 그리스도의 것으로 부르심을 받은 자니라

롬1:7 로마에서 하나님의 사랑하심을 받고 성도로 부르심을 받은 모든 자에게 하나님 우리 아버지와 주 예수 그리스도로부터 은혜와 평강이 있기를 원하노라

롬1:8 먼저 내가 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 너희 모든 사람에 관하여 내 하나님께 감사함은 너희 믿음이 온 세상에 전파됨이로다

롬1:9 내가 그의 아들의 복음 안에서 내 심령으로 섬기는 하나님이 나의 증인이 되시거니와 항상 내 기도에 쉬지 않고 너희를 말하며

롬1:10 어떻게 하든지 이제 하나님의 뜻 안에서 너희에게로 나아갈 좋은 길 얻기를 구하노라

롬1:11 내가 너희 보기를 간절히 원하는 것은 어떤 신령한 은사를 너희에게 나누어 주어 너희를 견고하게 하려 함이니

롬1:12 이는 곧 내가 너희 가운데서 너희와 나의 믿음으로 말미암아 피차 안위함을 얻으려 함이라

롬1:13 형제들아 내가 여러 번 너희에게 가고자 한 것을 너희가 모르기를 원하지 아니하노니 이는 너희 중에서도 다른 이방인 중에서와 같이 열매를 맺게 하려 함이로되 지금까지 길이 막혔도다

롬1:14 헬라인이나 야만인이나 지혜 있는 자나 어리석은 자에게 다 내가 빚진 자라

롬1:15 그러므로 나는 할 수 있는 대로 로마에 있는 너희에게도 복음 전하기를 원하노라

롬1:16 내가 복음을 부끄러워하지 아니하노니 이 복음은 모든 믿는 자에게 구원을 주시는 하나님의 능력이 됨이라 먼저는 유대인에게요 그리고 헬라인에게로다

롬1:17 복음에는 하나님의 의가 나타나서 믿음으로 믿음에 이르게 하나니 기록된 바 오직 의인은 믿음으로 말미암아 살리라 함과 같으니라

롬1:18 하나님의 진노가 불의로 진리를 막는 사람들의 모든 경건하지 않음과 불의에 대하여 하늘로부터 나타나나니

롬1:19 이는 하나님을 알 만한 것이 그들 속에 보임이라 하나님께서 이를 그들에게 보이셨느니라

롬1:20 창세로부터 그의 보이지 아니하는 것들 곧 그의 영원하신 능력과 신성이 그가 만드신 만물에 분명히 보여 알려졌나니 그러므로 그들이 핑계하지 못할지니라

롬1:21 하나님을 알되 하나님을 영화롭게도 아니하며 감사하지도 아니하고 오히려 그 생각이 허망하여지며 미련한 마음이 어두워졌나니

롬1:22 스스로 지혜 있다 하나 어리석게 되어

롬1:23 썩어지지 아니하는 하나님의 영광을 썩어질 사람과 새와 짐승과 기어다니는 동물 모양의 우상으로 바꾸었느니라

롬1:24 그러므로 하나님께서 그들을 마음의 정욕대로 더러움에 내버려 두사 그들의 몸을 서로 욕되게 하셨으니

롬1:25 이는 그들이 하나님의 진리를 거짓 것으로 바꾸어 피조물을 조물주보다 더 경배하고 섬김이라 주는 곧 영원히 찬송할 이시로다 아멘

롬1:26 이 때문에 하나님께서 그들을 부끄러운 욕심에 내버려 두셨으니 곧 그들의 여자들도 순리대로 쓸 것을 바꾸어 역리로 쓰며

롬1:27 그와 같이 남자들도 순리대로 여자 쓰기를 버리고 서로 향하여 음욕이 불 일듯 하매 남자가 남자와 더불어 부끄러운 일을 행하여 그들의 그릇됨에 상당한 보응을 그들 자신이 받았느니라

롬1:28 또한 그들이 마음에 하나님 두기를 싫어하매 하나님께서 그들을 그 상실한 마음대로 내버려 두사 합당하지 못한 일을 하게 하셨으니

롬1:29 곧 모든 불의, 추악, 탐욕, 악의가 가득한 자요 시기, 살인, 분쟁, 사기, 악독이 가득한 자요 수군수군하는 자요

롬1:30 비방하는 자요 하나님께서 미워하시는 자요 능욕하는 자요 교만한 자요 자랑하는 자요 악을 도모하는 자요 부모를 거역하는 자요

롬1:31 우매한 자요 배약하는 자요 무정한 자요 무자비한 자라

롬1:32 그들이 이같은 일을 행하는 자는 사형에 해당한다고 하나님께서 정하심을 알고도 자기들만 행할 뿐 아니라 또한 그런 일을 행하는 자들을 옳다 하느니라

예레미야 40 장.

렘40:1 사령관 느부사라단이 예루살렘과 유다의 포로를 바벨론으로 옮기는 중에 예레미야도 잡혀 사슬로 결박되어 가다가 라마에서 풀려난 후에 말씀이 여호와께로부터 예레미야에게 임하니라

렘40:2 사령관이 예레미야를 불러다가 이르되 네 하나님 여호와께서 이 곳에 이 재난을 선포하시더니

렘40:3 여호와께서 그가 말씀하신 대로 행하셨으니 이는 너희가 여호와께 범죄하고 그의 목소리에 순종하지 아니하였으므로 이제 이루어졌도다 이 일이 너희에게 임한 것이니라

렘40:4 보라 내가 오늘 네 손의 사슬을 풀어 너를 풀어 주노니 만일 네가 나와 함께 바벨론으로 가는 것을 좋게 여기거든 가자 내기 너를 선대하리라 만일 나와 함께 바벨론으로 가는 것을 좋지 않게 여기거든 그만 두라 보라 온 땅이 네 앞에 있나니 네가 좋게 여기는 대로 옳게 여기는 곳으로 갈지니라 하니라

렘40:5 예레미야가 아직 돌이키기 전에 그가 다시 이르되 너는 바벨론의 왕이 유다 성읍들을 맡도록 세운 사반의 손자 아히감의 아들 그다랴에게로 돌아가서 그와 함께 백성 가운데 살거나 네가 옳게 여기는 곳으로 가거나 할지니라 하고 그 사령관이 그에게 양식과 선물을 주어 보내매

렘40:6 예레미야가 미스바로 가서 아히감의 아들 그다랴에게로 나아가서 그 땅에 남아 있는 백성 가운데 그와 함께 사니라

렘40:7 들에 있는 모든 지휘관과 그 부하들이 바벨론의 왕이 아히감의 아들 그다랴에게 그 땅을 맡기고 남녀와 유아와 바벨론으로 잡혀가지 아니한 빈민을 그에게 위임하였다 함을 듣고

렘40:8 그들 곧 느다냐의 아들 이스마엘과 가레아의 두 아들 요하난과 요나단과 단후멧의 아들 스라야와 느도바 사람 에배의 아들들과 마아가 사람의 아들 여사냐와 그들의 사람들이 미스바로 가서 그다랴에게 이르니

렘40:9 사반의 손자 아히감의 아들 그다랴가 그들과 그들의 사람들에게 맹세하며 이르되 너희는 갈대아 사람을 섬기기를 두려워하지 말고 이 땅에 살면서 바벨론의 왕을 섬기라 그리하면 너희에게 유익하리라

렘40:10 보라 나는 미스바에 살면서 우리에게로 오는 갈대아 사람을 섬기리니 너희는 포도주와 여름 과일과 기름을 모아 그릇에 저장하고 너희가 얻은 성읍들에 살라 하니라

렘40:11 모압과 암몬 자손 중과 에돔과 모든 지방에 있는 유다 사람도 바벨론의 왕이 유다에 사람을 남겨 둔 것과 사반의 손자 아히감의 아들 그다랴를 그들을 위하여 세웠다 함을 듣고

렘40:12 그 모든 유다 사람이 쫓겨났던 각처에서 돌아와 유다 땅 미스바에 사는 그다랴에게 이르러 포도주와 여름 과일을 심히 많이 모으니라

렘40:13 가레아의 아들 요하난과 들에 있던 모든 군 지휘관들이 미스바에 사는 그다랴에게 이르러

렘40:14 그에게 이르되 암몬 자손의 왕 바알리스가 네 생명을 빼앗으려 하여 느다냐의 아들 이스마엘을 보낸 줄 네가 아느냐 하되 아히감의 아들 그다랴가 믿지 아니한지라

렘40:15 가레아의 아들 요하난이 미스바에서 그다랴에게 비밀히 말하여 이르되 청하노니 내가 가서 사람이 모르게 느다냐의 아들 이스마엘을 죽이게 하라 어찌하여 그가 네 생명을 빼앗게 하여 네게 모인 모든 유다 사람을 흩어지게 하며 유다의 남은 자로 멸망을 당하게 하랴 하니라

렘40:16 그러나 아히감의 아들 그다랴가 가레아의 아들 요하난에게 이르되 네가 이 일을 행하지 말 것이니라 네가 이스마엘에 대하여 한 말은 진정이 아니니라 하니라

시편 13 장.

시13:1 여호와여 어느 때까지니이까 나를 영원히 잊으시나이까 주의 얼굴을 나에게서 어느 때까지 숨기시겠나이까

시13:2 나의 영혼이 번민하고 종일토록 마음에 근심하기를 어느 때까지 하오며 내 원수가 나를 치며 자랑하기를 어느 때까지 하리이까

시13:3 여호와 내 하나님이여 나를 생각하사 응답하시고 나의 눈을 밝히소서 두렵건대 내가 사망의 잠을 잘까 하오며

시13:4 두렵건대 나의 원수가 이르기를 내가 그를 이겼다 할까 하오며 내가 흔들릴 때에 나의 대적들이 기뻐할까 하나이다

시13:5 나는 오직 주의 사랑을 의지하였사오니 나의 마음은 주의 구원을 기뻐하리이다

시13:6 내가 여호와를 찬송하리니 이는 주에서 내게 은덕을 베푸심이로다

시편 14 장.

시14:1 어리석은 자는 그의 마음에 이르기를 하나님이 없다 하는도다 그들은 부패하고 그 행실이 가증하니 선을 행하는 자가 없도다

시14:2 여호와께서 하늘에서 인생을 굽어살피사 지각이 있어 하나님을 찾는 자가 있는가 보려 하신즉

시14:3 다 치우쳐 함께 더러운 자가 되고 선을 행하는 자가 없으니 하나도 없도다

시14:4 죄악을 행하는 자는 다 무지하냐 그들이 떡 먹듯이 내 백성을 먹으면서 여호와를 부르지 아니하는도다

시14:5 그러나 거기서 그들은 두려워하고 두려워하였으니 하나님이 의인의 세대에 계심이로다

시14:6 너희가 가난한 자의 계획을 부끄럽게 하나 오직 여호와는 그이 피난처가 되시도다

시14:7 이스라엘의 구원이 시온에서 나오기를 원하도다 여호와께서 그의 백성을 포로된 곳에서 돌이키실 때에 야곱이 즐거워하고 이스라엘이 기뻐하리로다

1 Samuel 1.

1:1 There was a certain man from Ramathaim, a Zuphite from the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.

1:2 He had two wives; one was called Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.

1:3 Year after year this man went up from his town to worship and sacrifice to the LORD Almighty at Shiloh, where Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli, were priests of the LORD.

1:4 Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice, he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters.

1:5 But to Hannah he gave a double portion because he loved her, and the LORD had closed her womb.

1:6 And because the LORD had closed her womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her.

1:7 This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the LORD, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat.

1:8 Elkanah her husband would say to her, "Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don't you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don't I mean more to you than ten sons?"

1:9 Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on a chair by the doorpost of the LORD'S temple.

1:10 In bitterness of soul Hannah wept much and prayed to the LORD.

1:11 And she made a vow, saying, "O LORD Almighty, if you will only look upon your servant's misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head."

1:12 As she kept on praying to the LORD, Eli observed her mouth.

1:13 Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk

1:14 and said to her, "How long will you keep on getting drunk? Get rid of your wine."

1:15 "Not so, my lord," Hannah replied, "I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the LORD.

1:16 Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief."

1:17 Eli answered, "Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him."

1:18 She said, "May your servant find favor in your eyes." Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast.

1:19 Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the LORD and then went back to their home at Ramah. Elkanah lay with Hannah his wife, and the LORD remembered her.

1:20 So in the course of time Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, "Because I asked the LORD for him."

1:21 When the man Elkanah went up with all his family to offer the annual sacrifice to the LORD and to fulfill his vow,

1:22 Hannah did not go. She said to her husband, "After the boy is weaned, I will take him and present him before the LORD, and he will live there always."

1:23 "Do what seems best to you," Elkanah her husband told her. "Stay here until you have weaned him; only may the LORD make good his word." So the woman stayed at home and nursed her son until she had weaned him.

1:24 After he was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh.

1:25 When they had slaughtered the bull, they brought the boy to Eli,

1:26 and she said to him, "As surely as you live, my lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the LORD.

1:27 I prayed for this child, and the LORD has granted me what I asked of him.

1:28 So now I give him to the LORD. For his whole life he will be given over to the LORD." And he worshiped the LORD there.

Romans 1.

1:1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God--

1:2 the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures

1:3 regarding his Son, who as to his human nature was a descendant of David,

1:4 and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.

1:5 Through him and for his name's sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith.

1:6 And you also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.

1:7 To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

1:8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world.

1:9 God, whom I serve with my whole heart in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you

1:10 in my prayers at all times; and I pray that now at last by God's will the way may be opened for me to come to you.

1:11 I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong--

1:12 that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith.

1:13 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that I planned many times to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now) in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles.

1:14 I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish.

1:15 That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are at Rome.

1:16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.

1:17 For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."

1:18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness,

1:19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.

1:20 For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

1:21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.

1:22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools

1:23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

1:24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.

1:25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen.

1:26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones.

1:27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

1:28 Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done.

1:29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips,

1:30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents;

1:31 they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless.

1:32 Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

Jeremiah 40.

40:1 The word came to Jeremiah from the LORD after Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard had released him at Ramah. He had found Jeremiah bound in chains among all the captives from Jerusalem and Judah who were being carried into exile to Babylon.

40:2 When the commander of the guard found Jeremiah, he said to him, "The LORD your God decreed this disaster for this place.

40:3 And now the LORD has brought it about; he has done just as he said he would. All this happened because you people sinned against the LORD and did not obey him.

40:4 But today I am freeing you from the chains on your wrists. Come with me to Babylon, if you like, and I will look after you; but if you do not want to, then don't come. Look, the whole country lies before you; go wherever you please."

40:5 However, before Jeremiah turned to go, Nebuzaradan added, "Go back to Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed over the towns of Judah, and live with him among the people,

40:5 or go anywhere else you please." Then the commander gave him provisions and a present and let him go.

40:6 So Jeremiah went to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah and stayed with him among the people who were left behind in the land.

40:7 When all the army officers and their men who were still in the open country heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam as governor over the land and had put him in charge of the men, women and children

40:7 who were the poorest in the land and who had not been carried into exile to Babylon,

40:8 they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah--Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah the son of the Maacathite, and their men.

40:9 Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, took an oath to reassure them and their men. "Do not be afraid to serve the Babylonians," he said. "Settle down in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well with you.

40:10 I myself will stay at Mizpah to represent you before the Babylonians who come to us, but you are to harvest the wine, summer fruit and oil, and put them in your storage jars, and live in the towns you have taken over."

40:11 When all the Jews in Moab, Ammon, Edom and all the other countries heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant in Judah and had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, as governor over them,

40:12 they all came back to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah, from all the countries where they had been scattered. And they harvested an abundance of wine and summer fruit.

40:13 Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers still in the open country came to Gedaliah at Mizpah

40:14 and said to him, "Don't you know that Baalis king of the Ammonites has sent Ishmael son of Nethaniah to take your life?" But Gedaliah son of Ahikam did not believe them.

40:15 Then Johanan son of Kareah said privately to Gedaliah in Mizpah, "Let me go and kill Ishmael son of Nethaniah, and no one will know it.

40:15 Why should he take your life and cause all the Jews who are gathered around you to be scattered and the remnant of Judah to perish?"

40:16 But Gedaliah son of Ahikam said to Johanan son of Kareah, "Don't do such a thing! What you are saying about Ishmael is not true."

Psalms 13.

13:1 How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?

13:2 How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and every day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me?

13:3 Look on me and answer, O LORD my God. Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death;

13:4 my enemy will say, "I have overcome him," and my foes will rejoice when I fall.

13:5 But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation.

13:6 I will sing to the LORD, for he has been good to me.

Psalms 14.

14:1 The fool says in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good.

14:2 The LORD looks down from heaven on the sons of men to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God.

14:3 All have turned aside, they have together become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one.

14:4 Will evildoers never learn--those who devour my people as men eat bread and who do not call on the LORD?

14:5 There they are, overwhelmed with dread, for God is present in the company of the righteous.

14:6 You evildoers frustrate the plans of the poor, but the LORD is their refuge.

14:7 Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion! When the LORD restores the fortunes of his people, let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!
