사무엘상 2 장.

삼상2:1 한나가 기도하여 이르되 내 마음이 여호와로 말미암아 즐거워하며 내 뿔이 여호와로 말미암아 높아졌으며 내 입이 내 원수들을 향하여 크게 열렸으니 이는 내가 주의 구원으로 말미암아 기뻐함이니이다

삼상2:2 여호와와 같이 거룩하신 이가 없으시니 이는 주 밖에 다른 이가 없고 우리 하나님 같은 반석도 없으심이니이다

삼상2:3 심히 교만한 말을 다시 하지 말 것이며 오만한 말을 너희의 입에서 내지 말지어다 여호와는 지식의 하나님이시라 행동을 달아 보시느니라

삼상2:4 용사의 활은 꺾이고 넘어진 자는 힘으로 띠를 띠도다

삼상2:5 풍족하던 자들은 양식을 위하여 품을 팔고 주리던 자들은 다시 주리지 아니하도다 전에 임신하지 못하던 자는 일곱을 낳았고 많은 자녀를 둔 자는 쇠약하도다

삼상2:6 여호와는 죽이기도 하시고 살리기도 하시며 스올에 내리게도 하시고 거기에서 올리기도 하시는도다

삼상2:7 여호와는 가난하게도 하시고 부하게도 하시며 낮추기도 하시고 높이기도 하시는도다

삼상2:8 가난한 자를 진토에서 일으키시며 빈궁한 자를 거름더미에서 올리사 귀족들과 함께 앉게 하시며 영광의 자리를 차지하게 하시는도다 땅의 기둥들은 여호와의 것이라 여호와께서 세계를 그것들 위에 세우셨도다

삼상2:9 그가 그의 거룩한 자들의 발을 지키실 것이요 악인들을 흑암 중에서 잠잠하게 하시리니 힘으로는 이길 사람이 없음이로다

삼상2:10 여호와를 대적하는 자는 산산이 깨어질 것이라 하늘에서 우레로 그들을 치시리로다 여호와께서 땅 끝까지 심판을 내리시고 자기 왕에게 힘을 주시며 자기의 기름 부음을 받은 자의 뿔을 높이시리로다 하니라

삼상2:11 엘가나는 라마의 자기 집으로 돌아가고 그 아이는 제사장 엘리 앞에서 여호와를 섬기니라

삼상2:12 엘리의 아들들은 행실이 나빠 여호와를 알지 못하더라

삼상2:13 그 제사장들이 백성에게 행하는 관습은 이러하니 곧 어떤 사람이 제사를 드리고 그 고기를 삶을 때에 제사장의 사환이 손에 세 살 갈고리를 가지고 와서

삼상2:14 그것으로 냄비에나 솥에나 큰 솥에나 가마에 찔러 넣어 갈고리에 걸려 나오는 것은 제사장이 자기 것으로 가지되 실로에서 그 곳에 온 모든 이스라엘 사람에게 이같이 할 뿐 아니라

삼상2:15 기름을 태우기 전에도 제사장의 사환이 와서 제사 드리는 사람에게 이르기를 제사장에게 구워 드릴 고기를 내라 그가 네게 삶은 고기를 원하지 아니하고 날 것을 원하신다 하다가

삼상2:16 그 사람이 이르기를 반드시 먼저 기름을 태운 후에 네 마음에 원하는 대로 가지라 하면 그가 말하기를 아니라 지금 내게 내라 그렇지 아니하면 내가 억지로 빼앗으리라 하였으니

삼상2:17 이 소년들의 죄가 여호와 앞에 심히 큼은 그들이 여호와의 제사를 멸시함이었더라

삼상2:18 사무엘은 어렸을 때에 세마포 에봇을 입고 여호와 앞에서 섬겼더라

삼상2:19 그의 어머니가 매년 드리는 제사를 드리러 그의 남편과 함께 올라갈 때마다 작은 겉옷을 지어다가 그에게 주었더니

삼상2:20 엘리가 엘가나와 그의 아내에게 축복하여 이르되 여호와께서 이 여인으로 말미암아 네게 다른 후사를 주사 이가 여호와께 간구하여 얻어 바친 아들을 대신하게 하시기를 원하노라 하였더니 그들이 자기 집으로 돌아가매

삼상2:21 여호와께서 한나를 돌보시사 그로 하여금 임신하여 세 아들과 두 딸을 낳게 하셨고 아이 사무엘은 여호와 앞에서 자라니라

삼상2:22 엘리가 매우 늙었더니 그의 아들들이 온 이스라엘에게 행한 모든 일과 회막 문에서 수종 드는 여인들과 동침하였음을 듣고

삼상2:23 그들에게 이르되 너희가 어찌하여 이런 일을 하느냐 내가 너희의 악행을 이 모든 백성에게서 듣노라

삼상2:24 내 아들들아 그리하지 말라 내게 들리는 소문이 좋지 아니하니라 너희가 여호와의 백성으로 범죄하게 하는도다

삼상2:25 사람이 사람에게 범죄하면 하나님이 심판하시려니와 만일 사람이 여호와께 범죄하면 누가 그를 위하여 간구하겠느냐 하되 그들이 자기 아버지의 말을 듣지 아니하였으니 이는 여호와께서 그들을 죽이기로 뜻하셨음이더라

삼상2:26 아이 사무엘이 점점 자라매 여호와와 사람들에게 은총을 더욱 받더라

삼상2:27 하나님의 사람이 엘리에게 와서 그에게 이르되 여호와의 말씀에 너희 조상의 집이 애굽에서 바로의 집에 속하였을 때에 내가 그들에게 나타나지 아니하였느냐

삼상2:28 이스라엘 모든 지파 중에서 내가 그를 택하여 내 제사장으로 삼아 그가 내 제단에 올라 분향하며 내 앞에서 에봇을 입게 하지 아니하였느냐 이스라엘 자손이 드리는 모든 화제를 내가 네 조상의 집에 주지 아니하였느냐

삼상2:29 너희는 어찌하여 내가 내 처소에서 명령한 내 제물과 예물을 밟으며 네 아들들을 나보다 더 중히 여겨 내 백성 이스라엘이 드리는 가장 좋은 것으로 너희들을 살지게 하느냐

삼상2:30 그러므로 이스라엘의 하나님 나 여호와가 말하노라 내가 전에 네 집과 네 조상의 집이 내 앞에 영원히 행하리라 하였으나 이제 나 여호와가 말하노니 결단코 그렇게 하지 아니하리라 나를 존중히 여기는 자를 내가 존중히 여기고 나를 멸시하는 자를 내가 경멸하리라

삼상2:31 보라 내가 네 팔과 네 조상의 집 팔을 끊어 네 집에 노인이 하나도 없게 하는 날이 이를지라

삼상2:32 이스라엘에게 모든 복을 내리는 중에 너는 내 처소의 환난을 볼 것이요 네 집에 영원토록 노인이 없을 것이며

삼상2:33 내 제단에서 내가 끊어버리지 아니할 네 사람이 네 눈을 쇠잔하게 하고 네 마음을 슬프게 할 것이요 네 집에서 출산되는 모든 자가 젊어서 죽으리라

삼상2:34 네 두 아들 홉니와 비느하스가 한 날에 죽으리니 그 둘이 당할 그 일이 네게 표징이 되리라

삼상2:35 내가 나를 위하여 충실한 제사장을 일으키리니 그 사람은 내 마음, 내 뜻대로 행할 것이라 내가 그를 위하여 견고한 집을 세우리니 그가 나의 기름 부음을 받은 자 앞에서 영구히 행하리라

삼상2:36 그리고 네 집에 남은 사람이 각기 와서 은 한 조각과 떡 한 덩이를 위하여 그에게 엎드려 이르되 청하노니 내게 제사장의 직분 하나를 맡겨 내게 떡 조각을 먹게 하소서 하리라 하셨다 하니라

로 마 서 2 장.

롬2:1 그러므로 남을 판단하는 사람아, 누구를 막론하고 네가 핑계하지 못할 것은 남을 판단하는 것으로 네가 너를 정죄함이니 판단하는 네가 같은 일을 행함이니라

롬2:2 이런 일을 행하는 자에게 하나님의 심판이 진리대로 되는 줄 우리가 아노라

롬2:3 이런 일을 행하는 자를 판단하고도 같은 일을 행하는 사람아, 네가 하나님의 심판을 피할 줄로 생각하느냐

롬2:4 혹 네가 하나님의 인자하심이 너를 인도하여 회개하게 하심을 알지 못하여 그의 인자하심과 용납하심과 길이 참으심이 풍성함을 멸시하느냐

롬2:5 다만 네 고집과 회개하지 아니한 마음을 따라 진노의 날 곧 하나님의 의로우신 심판이 나타나는 그 날에 임할 진노를 네게 쌓는도다

롬2:6 하나님께서 각 사람에게 그 행한 대로 보응하시되

롬2:7 참고 선을 행하여 영광과 존귀와 썩지 아니함을 구하는 자에게는 영생으로 하시고

롬2:8 오직 당을 지어 진리를 따르지 아니하고 불의를 따르는 자에게는 진노와 분노로 하시리라

롬2:9 악을 행하는 각 사람의 영에는 환난과 곤고가 있으리니 먼저는 유대인에게요 그리고 헬라인에게며

롬2:10 선을 행하는 사람에게는 영광과 존귀와 평강이 있으리니 먼저는 유대인에게요 그리고 헬라인에게라

롬2:11 이는 하나님께서 외모로 사람을 취하지 아니하심이라

롬2:12 무릇 율법 없이 범죄한 자는 또한 율법 없이 망하고 무릇 율법이 있고 범죄한 자는 율법으로 말미암아 심판을 받으리라

롬2:13 하나님 앞에서는 율법을 듣는 자가 의인이 아니요 오직 율법을 행하는 자라야 의롭다 하심을 얻으리니

롬2:14 (율법 없는 이방인이 본성으로 율법의 일을 행할 때에는 이 사람은 율법이 없어도 자기가 자기에게 율법이 되나니

롬2:15 이런 이들은 그 양심이 증거가 되어 그 생각들이 서로 혹은 고발하며 혹은 변명하여 그 마음에 새긴 율법의 행위를 나타내느니라)

롬2:16 곧 나의 복음에 이른 바와 같이 하나님이 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 사람들의 은밀한 것을 심판하시는 그 날이라

롬2:17 유대인이라 불리는 네가 율법을 의지하며 하나님을 자랑하며

롬2:18 율법의 교훈을 받아 하나님의 뜻을 알고 지극히 선한 것을 분간하며

롬2:19 맹인의 길을 인도하는 자요 어둠에 있는 자의 빛이요

롬2:20 율법에 있는 지식과 진리의 모본을 가진 자로서 어리석은 자의 교사요 어린 아이의 선생이라고 스스로 믿으니

롬2:21 그러면 다른 사람을 가르치는 네가 네 자신은 가르치지 아니하느냐 도둑질하지 말라 선포하는 네가 도둑질하느냐

롬2:22 간음하지 말라 말하는 네가 간음하느냐 우상을 가증히 여기는 네가 신전 물건을 도둑질하느냐

롬2:23 율법을 자랑하는 네가 율법을 범함으로 하나님을 욕되게 하느냐

롬2:24 기록된 바와 같이 하나님의 이름이 너희 때문에 이방인 중에서 모독을 받는도다

롬2:25 네가 율법을 행하면 할례가 유익하나 만일 율법을 범하면 네 할례는 무할례가 되느니라

롬2:26 그런즉 무할례자가 율법의 규례를 지키면 그 무할례를 할례와 같이 여길 것이 아니냐

롬2:27 또한 본래 무할례자가 율법을 온전히 지키면 율법 조문과 할례를 가지고 율법을 범하는 너를 정죄하지 아니하겠느냐

롬2:28 무릇 표면적 유대인이 유대인이 아니요 표면적 육신의 할례가 할례가 아니니라

롬2:29 오직 이면적 유대인이 유대인이며 할례는 마음에 할지니 영에 있고 율법 조문에 있지 아니한 것이라 그 칭찬이 사람에게서가 아니요 다만 하나님에게서니라

예레미야 41 장.

렘41:1 일곱째 달에 왕의 종친 엘리사마의 손자요 느다냐의 아들로서 왕의 장관인 이스마엘이 열 사람과 함께 미스바로 가서 아히감의 아들 그다랴에게 이르러 미스바에서 함께 떡을 먹다가

렘41:2 느다냐의 아들 이스마엘과 그와 함께 있던 열 사람이 일어나서 바벨론의 왕의 그 땅을 위임했던 사반의 손자 아히감의 아들 그다랴를 칼로 쳐죽였고

렘41:3 이스마엘이 또 미스바에서 그다랴와 함께 있던 모든 유다 사람과 거기에 있는 갈대아 군사를 죽였더라

렘41:4 그가 그다랴를 죽인지 이틀이 되었어도 이를 아는 사람이 없었더라

렘41:5 그 때에 사람 팔십 명이 자기들의 수염을 깎고 옷을 찢고 몸에 상처를 내고 손에 소제물과 유향을 가지고 세겜과 실로와 사마리아로부터 와서 여호와의 성전으로 나아가려 한지라

렘41:6 느다냐의 아들 이스마엘이 그들을 영접하러 미스바에서 나와 울면서 가다가 그들을 만나 아히감의 아들 그다랴에게로 가자 하더라

렘41:7 그들이 성읍 중앙에 이를 때에 느다냐의 아들 이스마엘이 자기와 함께 있던 사람들과 더불어 그들을 죽여 구덩이 가운데에 던지니라

렘41:8 그 중의 열 사람은 이스마엘에게 이르기를 우리가 밀과 보리와 기름과 꿀을 밭에 감추었으니 우리를 죽이지 말라 하니 그가 그치고 그들을 그의 형제와 마찬가지로 죽이지 아니하였더라

렘41:9 이스마엘이 그다랴에게 속한 사람들을 죽이고 그 시체를 던진 구덩이는 아사 왕이 이스라엘의 바아사 왕을 두려워하여 팠던 것이라 느다냐의 아들 이스마엘이 그가 쳐죽인 사람들의 시체를 거기에 채우고

렘41:10 미스바에 남아 있는 왕의 딸들과 모든 백성 곧 사령관 느부사라단이 아히감의 아들 그다랴에게 위임하였던 바 미스바에 남아 있는 모든 백성을 이스마엘이 사로잡되 곧 느다냐의 아들 이스마엘이 그들을 사로잡고 암몬 자손에게로 가려고 떠나니라

렘41:11 가레아의 아들 요하난과 그와 함께 있는 모든 군 지휘관이 느다냐의 아들 이스마엘이 행한 모든 악을 듣고

렘41:12 모든 사람을 데리고 느다냐의 아들 이스마엘과 싸우러 가다가 기브온 큰 물 가에서 그를 만나매

렘41:13 이스마엘과 함께 있던 모든 백성이 가레아의 아들 요하난과 그와 함께 있던 모든 군 지휘관을 보고 기뻐한지라

렘41:14 이에 미스바에서 이스마엘이 사로잡은 그 모든 백성이 돌이켜 가레아의 아들 요하난에게로 돌아가니

렘41:15 느다냐의 아들 이스마엘이 여덟 사람과 함께 요하난을 피하여 암몬 자손에게로 가니라

렘41:16 가레아의 아들 요하난과 그와 함께 있던 모든 군 지휘관이 느다냐의 아들 이스마엘이 아히감의 아들 그다랴를 죽이고 미스바에서 잡아간 모든 남은 백성 곧 군사와 여자와 유아와 내시를 기브온에서 빼앗아 가지고 돌아와서

렘41:17 애굽으로 가려고 떠나 베들레헴 근처에 있는 게롯김함에 머물렀으니

렘41:18 이는 느다냐의 아들 이스마엘이 바벨론의 왕이 그 땅을 위임한 아히감의 아들 그다랴를 죽였으므로 그들이 갈대아 사람을 두려워함었더라

시편 15 장.

시15:1 여호와여 주의 장막에 머무는 자 누구오며 주의 성산에 사는 자 누구오니이까

시15:2 정직하게 행하며 공의를 실천하며 그의 마음에 진실을 말하며

시15:3 그의 혀로 남을 허물하지 아니하고 그의 이웃에게 악을 행하지 아니하며 그의 이웃을 비방하지 아니하며

시15:4 그의 눈은 망령된 자를 멸시하며 여호와를 두려워하는 자들을 존대하며 그의 마음에 서원한 것은 해로울지라도 변하지 아니하며

시15:5 이자를 받으려고 돈을 꾸어 주지 아니하며 뇌물을 받고 무죄한 자를 해하지 아니하는 자이니 이런 일을 행하는 자는 영원히 흔들리지 아니하리이다

시편 16 장.

시16:1 하나님이여 나를 지켜 주소서 내가 주께 피하나이다

시16:2 내가 여호와께 아뢰되 주는 나의 주님이시오니 주 밖에는 나의 복이 없다 하였나이다

시16:3 땅에 있는 성도들은 존귀한 자들이니 나의 모든 즐거움이 그들에게 있도다

시16:4 다른 신에게 예물을 드리는 자는 괴로움이 더할 것이라 나는 그들이 드리는 피의 전제를 드리지 아니하며 내 입술로 그 이름도 부르지 아니하리로다

시16:5 여호와는 나의 산업과 나의 잔의 소득이시니 나의 분깃을 지키시나이다

시16:6 내게 줄로 재어 준 구역은 아름다운 곳에 있음이여 나의 기업이 실로 아름답도다

시16:7 나를 훈계하신 여호와를 송축할지라 밤마다 내 양심이 나를 교훈하도다

시16:8 내가 여호와를 항상 내 앞에 모심이여 그가 나의 오른쪽에 계시므로 내가 흔들리지 아니하리로다

시16:9 이러므로 나의 마음이 기쁘고 나의 영도 즐거워하며 내 육체도 안전히 살리니

시16:10 이는 주께서 내 영혼을 스올에 버리지 아니하시며 주의 성도를 멸망시키지 않으실 것임이니이다

시16:11 주께서 생명의 길을 내게 보이시리니 주의 앞에는 충만한 기쁨이 있고 주의 오른쪽에는 영원한 즐거움이 있나이다

1 Samuel 2.

2:1 Then Hannah prayed and said: "My heart rejoices in the LORD; in the LORD my horn is lifted high. My mouth boasts over my enemies, for I delight in your deliverance.

2:2 "There is no one holy like the LORD; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.

2:3 "Do not keep talking so proudly or let your mouth speak such arrogance, for the LORD is a God who knows, and by him deeds are weighed.

2:4 "The bows of the warriors are broken, but those who stumbled are armed with strength.

2:5 Those who were full hire themselves out for food, but those who were hungry hunger no more. She who was barren has borne seven children, but she who has had many sons pines away.

2:6 "The LORD brings death and makes alive; he brings down to the grave and raises up.

2:7 The LORD sends poverty and wealth; he humbles and he exalts.

2:8 He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honor. "For the foundations of the earth are the LORD'S; upon them he has set the world.

2:9 He will guard the feet of his saints, but the wicked will be silenced in darkness. "It is not by strength that one prevails;

2:10 those who oppose the LORD will be shattered. He will thunder against them from heaven; the LORD will judge the ends of the earth. "He will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed."

2:11 Then Elkanah went home to Ramah, but the boy ministered before the LORD under Eli the priest.

2:12 Eli's sons were wicked men; they had no regard for the LORD.

2:13 Now it was the practice of the priests with the people that whenever anyone offered a sacrifice and while the meat was being boiled, the servant of the priest would come with a three-pronged fork in his hand.

2:14 He would plunge it into the pan or kettle or caldron or pot, and the priest would take for himself whatever the fork brought up. This is how they treated all the Israelites who came to Shiloh.

2:15 But even before the fat was burned, the servant of the priest would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, "Give the priest some meat to roast; he won't accept boiled meat from you, but only raw."

2:16 If the man said to him, "Let the fat be burned up first, and then take whatever you want," the servant would then answer, "No, hand it over now; if you don't, I'll take it by force."

2:17 This sin of the young men was very great in the LORD'S sight, for they were treating the LORD'S offering with contempt.

2:18 But Samuel was ministering before the LORD--a boy wearing a linen ephod.

2:19 Each year his mother made him a little robe and took it to him when she went up with her husband to offer the annual sacrifice.

2:20 Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, saying, "May the LORD give you children by this woman to take the place of the one she prayed for and gave to the LORD." Then they would go home.

2:21 And the LORD was gracious to Hannah; she conceived and gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the LORD.

2:22 Now Eli, who was very old, heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel and how they slept with the women who served at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.

2:23 So he said to them, "Why do you do such things? I hear from all the people about these wicked deeds of yours.

2:24 No, my sons; it is not a good report that I hear spreading among the LORD'S people.

2:25 If a man sins against another man, God may mediate for him; but if a man sins against the LORD, who will intercede for him?" His sons, however, did not listen to their father's rebuke, for it was the LORD'S will to put them to death.

2:26 And the boy Samuel continued to grow in stature and in favor with the LORD and with men.

2:27 Now a man of God came to Eli and said to him, "This is what the LORD says: 'Did I not clearly reveal myself to your father's house when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh?

2:28 I chose your father out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod in my presence. I also gave your father's house all the offerings made with fire by the Israelites.

2:29 Why do you scorn my sacrifice and offering that I prescribed for my dwelling? Why do you honor your sons more than me by fattening yourselves on the choice parts of every offering made by my people Israel?'

2:30 "Therefore the LORD, the God of Israel, declares: 'I promised that your house and your father's house would minister before me forever.' But now the LORD declares: 'Far be it from me! Those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be disdained.

2:31 The time is coming when I will cut short your strength and the strength of your father's house, so that there will not be an old man in your family line

2:32 and you will see distress in my dwelling. Although good will be done to Israel, in your family line there will never be an old man.

2:33 Every one of you that I do not cut off from my altar will be spared only to blind your eyes with tears and to grieve your heart, and all your descendants will die in the prime of life.

2:34 "'And what happens to your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, will be a sign to you--they will both die on the same day.

2:35 I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who will do according to what is in my heart and mind. I will firmly establish his house, and he will minister before my anointed one always.

2:36 Then everyone left in your family line will come and bow down before him for a piece of silver and a crust of bread and plead, "Appoint me to some priestly office so I can have food to eat."'"

Romans 2.

2:1 You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.

2:2 Now we know that God's judgment against those who do such things is based on truth.

2:3 So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God's judgment?

2:4 Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God's kindness leads you toward repentance?

2:5 But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed.

2:6 God "will give to each person according to what he has done."

2:7 To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.

2:8 But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.

2:9 There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile;

2:10 but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.

2:11 For God does not show favoritism.

2:12 All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law.

2:13 For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God's sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.

2:14 (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law,

2:15 since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.)

2:16 This will take place on the day when God will judge men's secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.

2:17 Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and brag about your relationship to God;

2:18 if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law;

2:19 if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark,

2:20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of infants, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth--

2:21 you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal?

2:22 You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?

2:23 You who brag about the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law?

2:24 As it is written: "God's name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you."

2:25 Circumcision has value if you observe the law, but if you break the law, you have become as though you had not been circumcised.

2:26 If those who are not circumcised keep the law's requirements, will they not be regarded as though they were circumcised?

2:27 The one who is not circumcised physically and yet obeys the law will condemn you who, even though you have the written code and circumcision, are a lawbreaker.

2:28 A man is not a Jew if he is only one outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical.

2:29 No, a man is a Jew if he is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a man's praise is not from men, but from God.

Jeremiah 41.

41:1 In the seventh month Ishmael son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, who was of royal blood and had been one of the king's officers, came with pen men to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah. While they were eating together there,

41:2 Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the ten men who were with him got up and struck down Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with the sword, killing the one whom the king of Babylon had appointed as governor over the land.

41:3 Ishmael also killed all the Jews who were with Gedaliah at Mizpah, as well as the Babylonian soldiers who were there.

41:4 The day after Gedaliah's assassination, before anyone knew about it,

41:5 eighty men who had shaved off their beards, torn their clothes and cut themselves came from Shechem, Shiloh and Samaria, bringing grain offerings and incense with them to the house of the LORD.

41:6 Ishmael son of Nethaniah went out from Mizpah to meet them, weeping as he went. When he met them, he said, "Come to Gedaliah son of Ahikam."

41:7 When they went into the city, Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the men who were with him slaughtered them and threw them into a cistern.

41:8 But ten of them said to Ishmael, "Don't kill us! We have wheat and barley, oil and honey, hidden in a field." So he let them alone and did not kill them with the others.

41:9 Now the cistern where he threw all the bodies of the men he had killed along with Gedaliah was the one King Asa had made as part of his defense against Baasha king of Israel. Ishmael son of Nethaniah filled it with the dead.

41:10 Ishmael made captives of all the rest of the people who were in Mizpah--the king's daughters along with all the others who were left there, over whom Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam. Ishmael son of Nethaniah took them captive and set out to cross over to the Ammonites.

41:11 When Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers who were with him heard about all the crimes Ishmael son of Nethaniah had committed,

41:12 they took all their men and went to fight Ishmael son of Nethaniah. They caught up with him near the great pool in Gibeon.

41:13 When all the people Ishmael had with him saw Johanan son of Kareah and the army officers who were with him, they were glad.

41:14 All the people Ishmael had taken captive at Mizpah turned and went over to Johanan son of Kareah.

41:15 But Ishmael son of Nethaniah and eight of his men escaped from Johanan and fled to the Ammonites.

41:16 Then Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers who were with him led away all the survivors from Mizpah whom he had recovered from Ishmael son of Nethaniah after he had assassinated Gedaliah son of Ahikam: the soldiers, women, children and court officials he had brought from Gibeon.

41:17 And they went on, stopping at Geruth Kimham near Bethlehem on their way to Egypt

41:18 to escape the Babylonians. They were afraid of them because Ishmael son of Nethaniah had killed Gedaliah son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed as governor over the land.

Psalms 15.

15:1 LORD, who may dwell in your sanctuary? Who may live on your holy hill?

15:2 He whose walk is blameless and who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from his heart

15:3 and has no slander on his tongue, who does his neighbor no wrong and casts no slur on his fellowman,

15:4 who despises a vile man but honors those who fear the LORD, who keeps his oath even when it hurts,

15:5 who lends his money without usury and does not accept a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things will never be shaken.

Psalms 16.

16:1 Keep me safe, O God, for in you I take refuge.

16:2 I said to the LORD, "You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing."

16:3 As for the saints who are in the land, they are the glorious ones in whom is all my delight.

16:4 The sorrows of those will increase who run after other gods. I will not pour out their libations of blood or take up their names on my lips.

16:5 LORD, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure.

16:6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.

16:7 I will praise the LORD, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me.

16:8 I have set the LORD always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

16:9 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure,

16:10 because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay.

16:11 You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
