사무엘상 9 장.

삼상9:1 베냐민 지파에 기스라 이름하는 유력한 사람이 있으니 그는 아비엘의 아들이요 스롤의 손자요 베고랏의 증손이요 아비아의 현손이며 베냐민 사람이더라

삼상9:2 기스에게 아들이 있으니 그의 이름은 사울이요 준수한 소년이라 이스라엘 자손 중에 그보다 더 준수한 자가 없고 키는 모든 백성보다 어깨 위만큼 더 컸더라

삼상9:3 사울의 아버지 기스가 암나귀들을 잃고 그의 아들 사울에게 이르되 너는 일어나 한 사환을 데리고 가서 암나귀들을 찾으라 하매

삼상9:4 그가 에브라임 산지와 살리사 땅으로 두루 다녀 보았으나 찾지 못하고 사알림 땅으로 두루 다녀 보았으나 그 곳에는 없었고 베냐민 사람의 땅으로 두루 다녀 보았으나 찾지 못하니라

삼상9:5 그들이 숩 땅에 이른 때에 사울이 함께 가던 사환에게 이르되 돌아가자 내 아버지께서 암 나귀 생각은 고사하고 우리를 위하여 걱정하실까 두려워하노라 하니

삼상9:6 그가 대답하되 보소서 이 성읍에 하나님의 사람이 있는데 존경을 받는 사람이라 그가 말한 것은 반드시 다 응하나니 그리로 가사이다 그가 혹 우리가 갈 길을 가르쳐 줄까 하나이다 하는지라

삼상9:7 사울이 그의 사환에게 이르되 우리가 가면 그 사람에게 무엇을 드리겠느냐 우리 주머니에 먹을 것이 다하였으니 하나님의 사람에게 드릴 예물이 없도다 무엇이 있느냐 하니

삼상9:8 사환이 사울에게 다시 대답하여 이르되 보소서 내 손에 은 한 세겔의 사분의 일이 있으니 하나님의 사람에게 드려 우리 길을 가르쳐 달라 하겠나이다 하더라

삼상9:9 (옛적 이스라엘에 사람이 하나님께 가서 물으려 하면 말하기를 선견자에게로 가자 하였으니 지금 선지자라 하는 자를 옛적에는 선견자라 일컬었더라)

삼상9:10 사울이 그의 사환에게 이르되 네 말이 옳다 가자 하고 그들이 하나님의 사람이 있는 성읍으로 가니라

삼상9:11 그들이 성읍을 향한 비탈길로 올라가다가 물 길으러 나오는 소녀들을 만나 그들에게 묻되 선견자가 여기 있느냐 하니

삼상9:12 그들이 대답하여 이르되 있나이다 보소서 그가 당신보다 앞서 갔으니 빨리 가소서 백성이 오늘 산당에서 제사를 드리므로 그가 오늘 성읍에 들어오셨나이다

삼상9:13 당신들이 성읍으로 들어가면 그가 먹으러 산당에 올라가기 전에 곧 만나리이다 그가 오기 전에는 백성이 먹지 아니하나니 이는 그가 제물을 축사한 후에야 청함을 받은 자가 먹음이니이다 그러므로 지금 올라가소서 곧 그를 만나리이다 하는지라

삼상9:14 그들이 성읍으로 올라가서 그리로 들어갈 때에 사무엘이 마침 산당으로 올라가려고 마주 나오더라

삼상9:15 사울이 오기 전날에 여호와께서 사무엘에게 알게 하여 이르시되

삼상9:16 내일 이맘 때에 내가 베냐민 땅에서 한 사람을 네게로 보내리니 너는 그에게 기름을 부어 내 백성 이스라엘의 지도자로 삼으라 그가 내 백성을 블레셋 사람들의 손에서 구원하리라 내 백성의 부르짖음이 내게 상달되었으므로 내가 그들을 돌보았노라 하셨더니

삼상9:17 사무엘이 사울을 볼 때에 여호와께서 그에게 이르시되 보라 이는 내가 네게 말한 사람이니 이가 내 백성을 다스리리라 하시니라

삼상9:18 사울이 성문 안 사무엘에게 나아가 이르되 선견자의 집이 어디인지 청하건대 내게 가르치소서 하니

삼상9:19 사무엘이 사울에게 대답하여 이르되 내가 선견자이니라 너는 내 앞서 산당으로 올라가라 너희가 오늘 나와 함께 먹을 것이요 아침에는 내가 너를 보내되 네 마음에 있는 것을 다 네게 말하리라

삼상9:20 사흘 전에 잃은 네 암나귀들을 염려하지 말라 찾았느니라 온 이스라엘이 사모하는 자가 누구냐 너와 네 아버지의 온 집이 아니냐 하는지라

삼상9:21 사울이 대답하여 이르되 나는 이스라엘 지파의 가장 작은 지파 베냐민 사람이 아니니이까 또 나의 가족은 베냐민 지파 모든 가족 중에 가장 미약하지 아니하니이까 당신이 어찌하여 내게 이같이 말씀하시나이까 하니

삼상9:22 사무엘이 사울과 그의 사환을 인도하여 객실로 들어가서 청한 자 중 상석에 앉게 하였는데 객은 삼십 명 가량이었더라

삼상9:23 사무엘이 요리인에게 이르되 내가 네게 주며 네게 두라고 말한 그 부분을 가져오라

삼상9:24 요리인이 넓적다리와 그것에 붙은 것을 가져다가 사울 앞에 놓는지라 사무엘이 이르되 보라 이는 두었던 것이니 네 앞에 놓고 먹으라 내가 백성을 청할 때부터 너를 위하여 이것을 두고 이 때를 기다리게 하였느니라 그 날에 사울이 사무엘과 함께 먹으니라

삼상9:25 그들이 산당에서 내려 성읍에 들어가서는 사무엘이 사울과 함께 지붕에서 담화하고

삼상9:26 그들이 일찍이 일어날새 동틀 때쯤이라 사무엘이 지붕에서 사울을 불러 이르되 일어나라 내가 너를 보내리라 하매 사울이 일어나고 그 두 사람 사울과 사무엘이 함께 밖으로 나가서

삼상9:27 성읍 끝에 이르매 사무엘이 사울에게 이르되 사환에게 우리를 앞서게 하라 하니라 사환이 앞서가므로 또 이르되 너는 이제 잠깐 서 있으라 내가 하나님의 말씀을 네게 들려 주리라 하더라

로 마 서 7 장.

롬7:1 형제들아 내가 법 아는 자들에게 말하노니 너희는 그 법이 사람이 살 동안만 그를 주관하는 줄 알지 못하느냐

롬7:2 남편 있는 여인이 그 남편 생전에는 법으로 그에게 매인 바 되나 만일 그 남편이 죽으면 남편의 법에서 벗어나느니라

롬7:3 그러므로 만일 그 남편 생전에 다른 남자에게 가면 음녀라 그러나 만일 남편이 죽으면 그 법에서 자유롭게 되나니 다른 남자에게 갈지라도 음녀가 되지 아니하느니라

롬7:4 그러므로 내 형제들아 너희도 그리스도의 몸으로 말미암아 율법에 대하여 죽임을 당하였으니 이른 다른 이 곧 죽은 자 가운데서 살아나신 이에게 가서 우리가 하나님을 위하여 열매를 맺게 하려 함이라

롬7:5 우리가 육신에 있을 때에는 율법으로 말미암는 죄의 정욕이 우리 지체 중에 역사하여 우리로 사망을 위하여 열매를 맺게 하였더니

롬7:6 이제는 우리가 얽매였던 것에 대하여 죽었으므로 율법에서 벗어났으니 이러므로 우리가 영의 새로운 것으로 섬길 것이요 율법 조문의 묵은 것으로 아니할지니라

롬7:7 그런즉 우리가 무슨 말을 하리요 율법이 죄냐 그럴 수 없느니라 율법으로 말미암지 않고는 내가 죄를 알지 못하였으니 곧 율법이 탐내지 말라 하지 아니하였더라면 내가 탐심을 알지 못하였으리라

롬7:8 그러나 죄가 기회를 타서 계명으로 말미암아 내 속에서 온갖 탐심을 이루었나니 이는 율법이 없으면 죄가 죽은 것임이라

롬7:9 전에 율법을 깨닫지 못했을 때에는 내가 살았더니 계명이 이르매 죄는 살아나고 나는 죽었도다

롬7:10 생명에 이르게 할 그 계명이 내게 대하여 도리어 사망에 이르게 하는 것이 되었도다

롬7:11 죄가 기회를 타서 계명으로 말미암아 나를 속이고 그것으로 나를 죽였는지라

롬7:12 이로 보건대 율법은 거룩하고 계명도 거룩하고 의로우며 선하도다

롬7:13 그런즉 선한 것이 내게 사망이 되었느냐 그럴 수 없느니라 오직 죄가 죄로 드러나기 위하여 선한 그것으로 말미암아 나를 죽게 만들었으니 이는 계명으로 말미암아 죄로 심히 죄 되게 하려 함이라

롬7:14 우리가 율법은 신령한 줄 알거니와 나는 육신에 속하여 죄 아래에 팔렸도다

롬7:15 내가 행하는 것을 내가 알지 못하노니 곧 내가 원하는 것은 행하지 아니하고 도리어 미워하는 것을 행함이라

롬7:16 만일 내가 원하지 아니하는 그것을 행하면 내가 이로써 율법이 선한 것을 시인하노니

롬7:17 이제는 그것을 행하는 자가 내가 아니요 내 속에 거하는 죄니라

롬7:18 내 속 곧 내 육신에 선한 것이 거하지 아니하는 줄을 아노니 원함은 내게 있으나 선을 행하는 것은 없노라

롬7:19 내가 원하는 바 선은 행하지 아니하고 도리어 원하지 아니하는 바 악을 행하는도다

롬7:20 만일 내가 원하지 아니하는 그것을 하면 이를 행하는 자는 내가 아니요 내 속에 거하는 죄니라

롬7:21 그러므로 내가 한 법을 깨달았노니 곧 선을 행하기 원하는 나에게 악이 함께 있는 것이로다

롬7:22 내 속사람으로는 하나님의 법을 즐거워하되

롬7:23 내 지체 속에서 한 다른 법이 내 마음의 법과 싸워 내 지체 속에 있는 죄의 법으로 나를 사로잡는 것을 보는도다

롬7:24 오호라 나는 곤고한 사람이로다 이 사망의 몸에서 누가 나를 건져내랴

롬7:25 우리 주 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님께 감사하리로다 그런즉 내 자신이 마음으로는 하나님의 법을 육신으로는 죄의 법을 섬기노라

예레미야 46 장.

렘46:1 이방 나라들에 대하여 선지자 예레미야에게 임한 여호와의 말씀이라

렘46:2 애굽에 관한 것이라 곧 유다의 요시야 왕의 아들 여호야김 넷째 해에 유브라데 강 가 갈그미스에서 바벨론의 느부갓네살 왕에게 패한 애굽의 왕 바로느고의 군대에 대한 말씀이라

렘46:3 너희는 작은 방패와 큰 방패를 예비하고 나가서 싸우라

렘46:4 너희 기병이여 말에 안장을 지워 타며 투구를 쓰고 나서며 창을 갈며 갑옷을 입으라

렘46:5 여호와의 말씀이니라 내가 본즉 그들이 놀라 물러가며 그들의 용사는 패하여 황급히 도망하며 뒤를 돌아보지 아니함은 어찜이냐 두려움이 그들의 사방에 있음이로다

렘46:6 발이 빠른 자도 도망하지 못하며 용사도 피하지 못하고 그들이 다 북쪽에서 유브라데 강가에 넘어지며 엎드러지는도다

렘46:7 강의 물이 출렁임 같고 나일 강이 불어남 같은 자가 누구냐

렘46:8 애굽은 나일 강이 불어남 같고 강물이 출렁임 같도다 그가 이르되 내가 일어나 땅을 덮어 성읍들과 그 주민을 멸할 것이라

렘46:9 말들아 달려라 병거들아 정신없이 달려라 용사여 나오라 방패 잡은 구스 사람과 붓 사람과 활을 당기는 루딤 사람이여 나올지니라 하거니와

렘46:10 그 날은 주 만군의 여호와께서 그의 대적에게 원수 갚는 보복 일이라 칼이 배부르게 삼키며 그들의 피를 넘치도록 마시리니 주 만군의 여호와께서 북쪽 유브라데 강 가에서 희생제물을 받으실 것임이로다

렘46:11 처녀 딸 애굽이여 길르앗으로 올라가서 유향을 취하라 네가 치료를 많이 받아도 효력이 없어 낫지 못하리라

렘46:12 네 수치가 나라들에 들렸고 네 부르짖음은 땅에 가득하였나니 용사가 용사에게 걸려 넘어져 둘이 함께 엎드러졌음이라

렘46:13 바벨론의 느부갓네살 왕이 와서 애굽 땅을 칠 일에 대하여 선지자 예레미야에게 이르신 여호와의 말씀이라

렘46:14 너희는 애굽에 선포하며 믹돌과 놉과 다바네스에 선포하여 말하기를 너희는 굳건히 서서 준비하라 네 사방이 칼에 삼키웠느니라

렘46:15 너희 장사들이 쓰러짐은 어찌함이냐 그들이 서지 못함은 여호와께서 그들을 몰아내신 까닭이니라

렘46:16 그가 많은 사람을 넘어지게 하시매 사람이 사람 위에 엎드러지며 이르되 일어나라 우리가 포악한 칼을 피하여 우리 민족에게로, 우리 고향으로 돌아가자 하도다

렘46:17 그들이 그 곳에서 부르짖기를 애굽의 바로 왕이 망하였도다 그가 기회를 놓쳤도다

렘46:18 만군의 여호와라 일컫는 왕이 이르시되 나의 삶으로 맹세하노니 그가 과연 산들 중의 다볼 같이, 해변의 갈멜 같이 오리라

렘46:19 애굽에 사는 딸이여 너는 너를 위하여 포로의 짐을 꾸리라 놉이 황무하여 불에 타서 주민이 없을 것임이라

렘46:20 애굽은 심히 아름다운 암송아지일지라도 북으로부터 쇠파리 떼가 줄곧 오리라

렘46:21 또 그 중의 고용꾼은 살진 수송아지 같아서 돌이켜 함께 도망하고 서지 못하였나니 재난의 날이 이르렀고 벌받는 때가 왔음이라

렘46:22 애굽의 소리가 뱀의 소리 같으리니 이는 그들의 군대가 벌목하는 자 같이 도끼를 가지고 올 것임이라

렘46:23 여호와의 말씀이니라 그들이 황충보다 많아서 셀 수 없으므로 조사할 수 없는 그의 수풀을 찍을 것이라

렘46:24 딸 애굽이 수치를 당하여 북쪽 백성의 손에 붙임을 당하리로다

렘46:25 만군의 여호와 이스라엘의 하나님께서 말씀하시니라 보라 내가 노의 아몬과 바로와 애굽과 애굽 신들과 왕들 곧 바로와 및 그를 의지하는 자들을 벌할 것이라

렘46:26 내가 그들의 생명을 노리는 자의 손 곧 바벨론의 느부갓네살 왕의 손과 그 종들의 손에 넘기리라 그럴지라도 그 후에는 그 땅이 이전 같이 사람 살 곳이 되리라 여호와의 말씀이니라

렘46:27 내 종 야곱아 두려워하지 말라 이스라엘아 놀라지 말라 보라 내가 너를 먼 곳에서 구원하며 네 자손을 포로된 땅에서 구원하리니 야곱이 돌아와서 평안하며 걱정 없이 살게 될 것이라 그를 두렵게 할 자 없으리라

렘46:28 여호와의 말씀이니라 내 종 야곱아 내가 너와 함께 있나니 두려워하지 말라 내가 너를 흩었던 그 나라들은 다 멸할지라도 너는 사라지지 아니하리라 내가 너를 법도대로 징계할 것이요 결코 무죄한 자로 여기지 아니하리라 하시니라

시편 22 장.

시22:1 내 하나님이여 내 하나님이여 어찌 나를 버리셨나이까 어찌 나를 멀리하여 돕지 아니하시오며 내 신음 소리를 듣지 아니하시나이까

시22:2 내 하나님이여 내가 낮에도 부르짖고 밤에도 잠잠하지 아니하오나 응답하지 아니하시나이다

시22:3 이스라엘의 찬송 중에 계시는 주여 주는 거룩하시나이다

시22:4 우리 조상들이 주께 의뢰하고 의뢰하였으므로 그들을 건지셨나이다

시22:5 그들이 주께 부르짖어 구원을 얻고 주께 의뢰하여 수치를 당하지 아니하였나이다

시22:6 나는 벌레요 사람이 아니라 사람의 비방 거리요 백성의 조롱거리니이다

시22:7 나를 보는 자는 다 나를 비웃으며 입술을 비쭉거리고 머리를 흔들며 말하되

시22:8 그가 여호와께 의탁하니 구원하실 걸, 그를 기뻐하시니 건지실 걸 하나이다

시22:9 오직 주께서 나를 모태에서 나오게 하시고 내 어머니의 젖을 먹을 때에 의지하게 하셨나이다

시22:10 내가 날 때부터 주께 맡긴 바 되었고 모태에서 나올 때부터 주는 나의 하나님이 되셨나이다

시22:11 나를 멀리 하지 마옵소서 환난이 가까우나 도울 자 없나이다

시22:12 많은 황소가 나를 에워싸며 바산의 힘센 소들이 나를 둘러쌌으며

시22:13 내게 그 입을 벌림이 찢으며 부르짖는 사자 같으니이다

시22:14 나는 물 같이 쏟아졌으며 내 모든 뼈는 어그러졌으며 내 마음은 밀랍 같아서 내 속에서 녹았으며

시22:15 내 힘이 말라 질그릇 조각 같고 내 혀가 입천장에 붙었나이다 주께서 또 나를 죽음의 진토 속에 두셨나이다

시22:16 개들이 나를 에워쌌으며 악한 무리가 나를 둘러 내 수족을 찔렀나이다

시22:17 내가 내 모든 뼈를 셀 수 있나이다 그들이 나를 주목하여 보고

시22:18 내 겉옷을 나누며 속옷을 제비뽑나이다

시22:19 여호와여 멀리하지 마옵소서 나의 힘이시여 속히 나를 도우소서

시22:20 내 생명을 칼에서 건지시며 내 유일한 것을 개의 세력에서 구하소서

시22:21 나를 사자의 입에서 구하소서 주께서 내게 응답하시고 들소의 뿔에서 구원하셨나이다

시22:22 내가 주의 이름을 형제에게 선포하고 회중 가운데에서 주를 찬송하리이다

시22:23 여호와를 두려워하는 너희여 그를 찬송할지어다 야곱의 모든 자손이여 그에게 영광을 돌릴지어다 너희 이스라엘 모든 자손이여 그를 경외할지어다

시22:24 그는 곤고한 자의 곤고를 멸시하거나 싫어하지 아니하시며 그의 얼굴을 그에게서 숨기지 아니하시고 그가 울부짖을 때에 들으셨도다

시22:25 큰 회중 가운데에서 나의 찬송은 주께로부터 온 것이니 주를 경외하는 자 앞에서 나의 서원을 갚으리이다

시22:26 겸손한 자는 먹고 배부를 것이며 여호와를 찾는 자는 그를 찬송할 것이라 너희 마음은 영원히 살지어다

시22:27 땅의 모든 끝이 여호와를 기억하고 돌아오며 모든 나라의 모든 족속이 주의 앞에 예배하리니

시22:28 나라는 여호와의 것이요 여호와는 모든 나라의 주재심이로다

시22:29 세상의 모든 풍성한 자가 먹고 경배할 것이요 진토 속으로 내려가는 자 곧 자기 영혼을 살리지 못할 자도 다 그 앞에 절하리로다

시22:30 후손이 그를 섬길 것이요 대대에 주를 전할 것이며

시22:31 와서 그의 공의를 태어날 백성에게 전함이여 주께서 이를 행하셨다 할 것이로다

1 Samuel 9.

9:1 There was a Benjamite, a man of standing, whose name was Kish son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Becorath, the son of Aphiah of Benjamin.

9:2 He had a son named Saul, an impressive young man without equal among the Israelites--a head taller than any of the others.

9:3 Now the donkeys belonging to Saul's father Kish were lost, and Kish said to his son Saul, "Take one of the servants with you and go and look for the donkeys."

9:4 So he passed through the hill country of Ephraim and through the area around Shalisha, but they did not find them. They went on into the district of Shaalim, but the donkeys were not there. Then he passed through the territory of Benjamin, but they did not find them.

9:5 When they reached the district of Zuph, Saul said to the servant who was with him, "Come, let's go back, or my father will stop thinking about the donkeys and start worrying about us."

9:6 But the servant replied, "Look, in this town there is a man of God; he is highly respected, and everything he says comes true. Let's go there now. Perhaps he will tell us what way to take."

9:7 Saul said to his servant, "If we go, what can we give the man? The food in our sacks is gone. We have no gift to take to the man of God. What do we have?"

9:8 The servant answered him again. "Look," he said, "I have a quarter of a shekel of silver. I will give it to the man of God so that he will tell us what way to take."

9:9 (Formerly in Israel, if a man went to inquire of God, he would say, "Come, let us go to the seer," because the prophet of today used to be called a seer.)

9:10 "Good," Saul said to his servant. "Come, let's go." So they set out for the town where the man of God was.

9:11 As they were going up the hill to the town, they met some girls coming out to draw water, and they asked them, "Is the seer here?"

9:12 "He is," they answered. "He's ahead of you. Hurry now; he has just come to our town today, for the people have a sacrifice at the high place.

9:13 As soon as you enter the town, you will find him before he goes up to the high place to eat. The people will not begin eating until he comes, because he must bless the sacrifice; afterward, those who are invited will eat. Go up now; you should find him about this time."

9:14 They went up to the town, and as they were entering it, there was Samuel, coming toward them on his way up to the high place.

9:15 Now the day before Saul came, the LORD had revealed this to Samuel:

9:16 "About this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin. Anoint him leader over my people Israel; he will deliver my people from the hand of the Philistines. I have looked upon my people, for their cry has reached me."

9:17 When Samuel caught sight of Saul, the LORD said to him, "This is the man I spoke to you about; he will govern my people."

9:18 Saul approached Samuel in the gateway and asked, "Would you please tell me where the seer's house is?"

9:19 "I am the seer," Samuel replied. "Go up ahead of me to the high place, for today you are to eat with me, and in the morning I will let you go and will tell you all that is in your heart.

9:20 As for the donkeys you lost three days ago, do not worry about them; they have been found. And to whom is all the desire of Israel turned, if not to you and all your father's family?"

9:21 Saul answered, "But am I not a Benjamite, from the smallest tribe of Israel, and is not my clan the least of all the clans of the tribe of Benjamin? Why do you say such a thing to me?"

9:22 Then Samuel brought Saul and his servant into the hall and seated them at the head of those who were invited--about thirty in number.

9:23 Samuel said to the cook, "Bring the piece of meat I gave you, the one I told you to lay aside."

9:24 So the cook took up the leg with what was on it and set it in front of Saul. Samuel said, "Here is what has been kept for you. Eat, because it was set aside for you for this occasion, from the time I said, 'I have invited guests.'" And Saul dined with Samuel that day.

9:25 After they came down from the high place to the town, Samuel talked with Saul on the roof of his house.

9:26 They rose about daybreak and Samuel called to Saul on the roof, "Get ready, and I will send you on your way." When Saul got ready, he and Samuel went outside together.

9:27 As they were going down to the edge of the town, Samuel said to Saul, "Tell the servant to go on ahead of us"--and the servant did so--"but you stay here awhile, so that I may give you a message from God."

Romans 7.

7:1 Do you not know, brothers--for I am speaking to men who know the law--that the law has authority over a man only as long as he lives?

7:2 For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage.

7:3 So then, if she marries another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress, even though she marries another man.

7:4 So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God.

7:5 For when we were controlled by the sinful nature, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our bodies, so that we bore fruit for death.

7:6 But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.

7:7 What shall we say, then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! Indeed I would not have known what sin was except through the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, "Do not covet."

7:8 But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of covetous desire. For apart from law, sin is dead.

7:9 Once I was alive apart from law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died.

7:10 I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life actually brought death.

7:11 For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, deceived me, and through the commandment put me to death.

7:12 So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good.

7:13 Did that which is good, then, become death to me? By no means! But in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it produced death in me through what was good, so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful.

7:14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin.

7:15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

7:16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.

7:17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.

7:18 I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.

7:19 For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do--this I keep on doing.

7:20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.

7:21 So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me.

7:22 For in my inner being I delight in God's law;

7:23 but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members.

7:24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?

7:25 Thanks be to God--through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God's law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.

Jeremiah 46.

46:1 This is the word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the nations:

46:2 Concerning Egypt: This is the message against the army of Pharaoh Neco king of Egypt, which was defeated at Carchemish on the Euphrates River by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah:

46:3 "Prepare your shields, both large and small, and march out for battle!

46:4 Harness the horses, mount the steeds! Take your positions with helmets on! Polish your spears, put on your armor!

46:5 What do I see? They are terrified, they are retreating, their warriors are defeated. They flee in haste without looking back, and there is terror on every side," declares the LORD.

46:6 "The swift cannot flee nor the strong escape. In the north by the River Euphrates they stumble and fall.

46:7 "Who is this that rises like the Nile, like rivers of surging waters?

46:8 Egypt rises like the Nile, like rivers of surging waters. She says, 'I will rise and cover the earth; I will destroy cities and their people.'

46:9 Charge, O horses! Drive furiously, O charioteers! March on, O warriors--men of Cush and Put who carry shields, men of Lydia who draw the bow.

46:10 But that day belongs to the Lord, the LORD Almighty--a day of vengeance, for vengeance on his foes. The sword will devour till it is satisfied, till it has quenched its thirst with blood. For the Lord, the LORD Almighty, will offer sacrifice in the land of the north by the River Euphrates.

46:11 "Go up to Gilead and get balm, O Virgin Daughter of Egypt. But you multiply remedies in vain; there is no healing for you.

46:12 The nations will hear of your shame; your cries will fill the earth. One warrior will stumble over another; both will fall down together."

46:13 This is the message the LORD spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the coming of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to attack Egypt:

46:14 "Announce this in Egypt, and proclaim it in Migdol; proclaim it also in Memphis and Tahpanhes: 'Take your positions and get ready, for the sword devours those around you.'

46:15 Why will your warriors be laid low? They cannot stand, for the LORD will push them down.

46:16 They will stumble repeatedly; they will fall over each other. They will say, 'Get up, let us go back to our own people and our native lands, away from the sword of the oppressor.'

46:17 There they will exclaim, 'Pharaoh king of Egypt is only a loud noise; he has missed his opportunity.'

46:18 "As surely as I live," declares the King, whose name is the LORD Almighty, "one will come who is like Tabor among the mountains, like Carmel by the sea.

46:19 Pack your belongings for exile, you who live in Egypt, for Memphis will be laid waste and lie in ruins without inhabitant.

46:20 "Egypt is a beautiful heifer, but a gadfly is coming against her from the north.

46:21 The mercenaries in her ranks are like fattened calves. They too will turn and flee together, they will not stand their ground, for the day of disaster is coming upon them, the time for them to be punished.

46:22 Egypt will hiss like a fleeing serpent as the enemy advances in force; they will come against her with axes, like men who cut down trees.

46:23 They will chop down her forest," declares the LORD, "dense though it be. They are more numerous than locusts, they cannot be counued.

46:24 The Daughter of Egypt will be put to shame, handed over to the people of the north."

46:25 The LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: "I am about to bring punishment on Amon god of Thebes, on Pharaoh, on Egypt and her gods and her kings, and on those who rely on Pharaoh.

46:26 I will hand them over to those who seek their lives, to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and his officers. Later, however, Egypt will be inhabited as in times past," declares the LORD.

46:27 "Do not fear, O Jacob my servant; do not be dismayed, O Israel. I will surely save you out of a distant place, your descendants from the land of their exile. Jacob will again have peace and security, and no one will make him afraid.

46:28 Do not fear, O Jacob my servant, for I am with you," declares the LORD. "Though I completely destroy all the nations among which I scatter you, I will not completely destroy you. I will discipline you but only with justice; I will not let you go entirely unpunished."

Psalms 22.

22:1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from the words of my groaning?

22:2 O my God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, and am not silent.

22:3 Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the praise of Israel.

22:4 In you our fathers put their trust; they trusted and you delivered them.

22:5 They cried to you and were saved; in you they trusted and were not disappointed.

22:6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men and despised by the people.

22:7 All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads:

22:8 "He trusts in the LORD; let the LORD rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him."

22:9 Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you even at my mother's breast.

22:10 From birth I was cast upon you; from my mother's womb you have been my God.

22:11 Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help.

22:12 Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me.

22:13 Roaring lions tearing their prey open their mouths wide against me.

22:14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted away within me.

22:15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death.

22:16 Dogs have surrounded me; a band of evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands and my feet.

22:17 I can count all my bones; people stare and gloat over me.

22:18 They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.

22:19 But you, O LORD, be not far off; O my Strength, come quickly to help me.

22:20 Deliver my life from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dogs.

22:21 Rescue me from the mouth of the lions; save me from the horns of the wild oxen.

22:22 I will declare your name to my brothers; in the congregation I will praise you.

22:23 You who fear the LORD, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! Revere him, all you descendants of Israel!

22:24 For he has not despised or disdained the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help.

22:25 From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly; before those who fear you will I fulfill my vows.

22:26 The poor will eat and be satisfied; they who seek the LORD will praise him--may your hearts live forever!

22:27 All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations will bow down before him,

22:28 for dominion belongs to the LORD and he rules over the nations.

22:29 All the rich of the earth will feast and worship; all who go down to the dust will kneel before him--those who cannot keep themselves alive.

22:30 Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord.

22:31 They will proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn--for he has done it.
