사무엘하 8 장.

삼하8:1 그 후에 다윗이 블레셋 사람들을 쳐서 항복을 받고 블레셋 사람들의 손에서 메덱암마를 빼앗으니라

삼하8:2 다윗이 또 모압을 쳐서 그들에게 땅에 엎드리게 하고 줄로 재어 그 두 줄 길이의 사람은 죽이고 한 줄 길이의 사람들은 살리니 모압 사람들이 다윗의 종들이 되어 조공을 드리니라

삼하8:3 르홉의 아들 소바 왕 하닷에셀이 자기 권세를 회복하려고 유브라데 강으로 갈 때에 다윗이 그를 쳐서

삼하8:4 그에게서 마병 천칠백 명과 보병 이만 명을 사로잡고 병거 일백 대의 말만 남기고 다윗이 그 외의 병거의 말은 다 발의 힘줄을 끊었더니

삼하8:5 다메섹의 아람 사람들이 소바 왕 하닷에셀을 도우러 온지라 다윗이 아람 사람 이만 이천 명을 죽이고

삼하8:6 다윗이 다메섹 아람에 수비대를 두매 아람 사람이 다윗의 종이 되어 조공을 바치니라 다윗이 어디로 가든지 여호와께서 이기게 하시니라

삼하8:7 다윗이 하닷에셀의 신복들이 가진 금 방패를 빼앗아 예루살렘으로 가져오고

삼하8:8 또 다윗 왕이 하닷에셀의 고을 베다와 베로대에서 매우 많은 놋을 빼앗으니라

삼하8:9 하맛 왕 도이가 다윗이 하닷에셀의 온 군대를 쳐서 무찔렀다 함을 듣고

삼하8:10 도이가 그의 아들 요람을 보내 다윗 왕에게 문안하고 축복하게 하니 이는 하닷에셀이 도이와 더불어 전쟁이 있던 터에 다윗이 하닷에셀을 쳐서 무찌름이라 요람이 은 그릇과 금 그릇과 놋 그릇 을 가지고 온지라

삼하8:11 다윗 왕이 그것도 여호와께 드리되 그가 정복한 모든 나라에서 얻은 은금

삼하8:12 곧 아람과 모압과 암몬 자손과 블레셋 사람과 아말렉에게서 얻은 것들과 오바 왕 르홉의 아들 하닷에셀에게서 노략한 것과 같이 드리니라

삼하8:13 다윗이 소금 골짜기에서 에돔 사람 만 팔천 명을 쳐죽이고 돌아와서 명성을 떨치니라

삼하8:14 다윗이 에돔에 수비대를 두되 온 에돔에 수비대를 두니 에돔 사람이 다 다윗의 종이 되니라 다윗이 어디로 가든지 여호와께서 이기게 하셨더라

삼하8:15 다윗이 온 이스라엘을 다스려 다윗이 모든 백성에게 정의와 공의를 행할새

삼하8:16 스루야의 아들 요압은 군사령관이 되고 아힐룻의 아들 여호사밧은 사관이 되고

삼하8:17 아히둡의 아들 사독과 아비아달의 아들 아히멜렉은 제사장이 되고 스라야는 서기관이 되고

삼하8:18 여호야다의 아들 브나야는 그렛 사람과 블렛 사람을 관할하고 다윗의 아들들은 대신들이 되니라

사무엘하 9 장.

삼하9:1 다윗이 이르되 사울의 집에 아직도 남은 사람이 있느냐 내가 요나단으로 말미암아 그 사람에게 은총을 베풀리라 하니라

삼하9:2 사울의 집에는 종 한 사람이 있으니 그의 이름은 시바라 그를 다윗의 앞으로 부르매 왕이 그에게 말하되 네가 시바냐 하니 이르되 당신의 종이니이다 하니라

삼하9:3 왕이 이르되 사울의 집에 아직도 남은 사람이 없느냐 내가 그 사람에게 하나님의 은총을 베풀고자 하노라 하니 시바가 왕께 아뢰되 요나단의 아들 하나가 있는데 다리 저는 자니이다 하니라

삼하9:4 왕이 그에게 말하되 그가 어디 있느냐 하니 시바가 왕께 아뢰되 로드발 암미엘의 아들 마길의 집에 있나이다 하니라

삼하9:5 다윗 왕이 사람을 보내어 로드발 암미엘의 아들 마길의 집에서 그를 데려오니

삼하9:6 사울의 손자 요나단의 아들 므비보셋이 다윗에게 나아와 그 앞에 엎드려 절하매 다윗이 이르되 므비보셋이여 하니 그가 이르기를 보소서 당신의 종이니이다

삼하9:7 다윗이 그에게 이르되 무서워하지 말라 내가 반드시 네 아버지 요나단으로 말미암아 네게 은총을 베풀리라 내가 네 할아버지 사울의 모든 밭을 다 네게 도로 주겠고 또 너는 항상 내 상에서 떡을 먹을지니라 하니

삼하9:8 그가 절하여 이르되 이 종이 무엇이기에 왕께서 죽은 개 같은 나를 돌아보시나이까 하니라

삼하9:9 왕이 사울의 시종 시바를 불러 그에게 이르되 사울과 그의 온 집에 속한 것은 내가 다 네 주인의 아들에게 주었노니

삼하9:10 너와 네 아들들과 네 종들은 그를 위하여 땅을 갈고 거두어 네 주인의 아들에게 양식을 대주어 먹게 하라 그러나 네 주인의 아들 므비보셋은 항상 내 상에서 떡을 먹으리라 하니라 시바는 아들이 열다섯 명이요 종이 스무 명이라

삼하9:11 시바가 왕께 아뢰되 내 주 왕께서 모든 일을 종에게 명령하신 대로 종이 준행하겠나이다 하니라 므비보셋은 왕자 중 하나처럼 왕의 상에서 먹으니라

삼하9:12 므비보셋에게 어린 아들 하나가 있으니 이름은 미가더라 시바의 집에 사는 자마다 므비보셋의 종이 되니라

삼하9:13 므비보셋이 항상 왕의 상에서 먹으므로 예루살렘에 사니라 그는 두 발을 다 절더라

고린도후서 2 장.

고후2:1 내가 다시는 너희에게 근심 중에 나아가지 아니하기로 스스로 결심하였노니

고후2:2 내가 너희를 근심하게 한다면 내가 근심하게 한 자밖에 나를 기쁘게 할 자가 누구냐

고후2:3 내가 이같이 쓴 것은 내가 갈 때에 마땅히 나를 기쁘게 할 자로부터 도리어 근심을 얻을까 염려함이요 또 너희 모두에 대한 나의 기쁨이 너희 모두의 기쁨인 줄 확신함이로라

고후2:4 내가 마음에 큰 눌림과 걱정이 있어 많은 눈물로 너희에게 썼노니 이는 너희로 근심하게 하려 한 것이 아니요 오직 내가 너희를 향하여 넘치는 사랑이 있음을 너희로 알게 하려 함이라

고후2:5 근심하게 한 자가 있었을지라도 나를 근심하게 한 것이 아니요 어느 정도 너희 모두를 근심하게 한 것이니 어느 정도라 함은 내가 너무 지나치게 말하지 아니하려 함이라

고후2:6 이러한 사람은 많은 사람에게서 벌 받는 것이 마땅하도다

고후2:7 그런즉 너희는 차라리 그를 용서하고 위로할 것이니 그가 너무 많은 근심에 잠길까 두려워하노라

고후2:8 그러므로 너희를 권하노니 사랑을 그들에게 나타내라

고후2:9 너희가 범사에 순종하는지 그 증거를 알고자 하여 내가 이것을 너희에게 썼노라

고후2:10 너희가 무슨 일에든지 누구를 용서하면 나도 그리하고 내가 만일 용서한 일이 있으면 용서한 그것은 너희를 위하여 그리스도 앞에서 한 것이니

고후2:11 이는 우리로 사탄에게 속지 않게 하려 함이라 우리가 그 계책을 알지 못하는 바가 아니로라

고후2:12 내가 그리스도의 복음을 위하여 드로아에 이르매 주 안에서 문이 내게 열렸으되

고후2:13 내가 내 형제 디도를 만나지 못하므로 내 심령이 편하지 못하여 그들을 작별하고 마게도냐로 갔노라

고후2:14 항상 우리를 그리스도 안에서 이기게 하시고 우리로 말미암아 각처에서 그리스도를 아는 냄새를 나타내시는 하나님께 감사하노라

고후2:15 우리는 구원 받는 자들에게나 망하는 자들에게나 하나님 앞에서 그리스도의 향기니

고후2:16 이 사람에게는 사망으로부터 사망에 이르는 냄새요 저 사람에게는 생명으로부터 생명에 이르는 냄새라 누가 이 일을 감당하리요

고후2:17 우리는 수많은 사람들처럼 하나님의 말씀을 혼잡하게 하지 아니하고 곧 순전함으로 하나님께 받은 것 같이 하나님 앞에서와 그리스도 안에서 말하노라

에스겔 16 장.

겔16:1 또 여호와의 말씀이 내게 임하여 이르시되

겔16:2 인자야 예루살렘으로 그 가증한 일을 알게 하여

겔16:3 이르기를 주 여호와께서 예루살렘에 관하여 이같이 말씀하시되 네 근본과 난 땅은 가나안이요 네 아버지는 아모리 사람이요 네 어머니는 헷 사람이라

겔16:4 네가 난 것을 말하건대 네가 날 때에 네 배꼽 줄을 자르지 아니 하였고 너를 물로 씻어 정결하게 하지 아니하였고 네게 소금을 뿌리지 아니하였고 너를 강보로 싸지도 아니하였나니

겔16:5 아무도 너를 돌보아 이 중에 한 가지라도 네게 행하여 너를 불쌍히 여긴 자가 없었으므로 네가 나던 날에 네 몸이 천하게 여겨져 네가 들에 버려졌느니라

겔16:6 내가 네 곁으로 지나갈 때에 네가 피투성이가 되어 발짓하는 것을 보고 네게 이르기를 너는 피투성이라도 살아 있으라 다시 이르기를 너는 피투성이라도 살아 있으라 하고

겔16:7 내가 너를 들의 풀 같이 많게 하였더니 네가 크게 자라고 심히 아름다우며 유방이 뚜렷하고 네 머리털이 자랐으나 네가 여전히 벌거벗은 알몸이더라

겔16:8 내가 네 곁으로 지나며 보니 네 때가 사랑을 할 만한 때라 내 옷으로 너를 덮어 벌거벗은 것을 가리고 네게 맹세하고 언약하여 너를 내게 속하게 하였느니라 나 주 여호와의 말이니라

겔16:9 내가 물로 네 피를 씻어 없애고 네게 기름을 바르고

겔16:10 수 놓은 옷을 입히고 물돼지 가죽신을 신기고 가는 베로 두르고 모시로 덧입히고

겔16:11 패물을 채우고 팔고리를 손목에 끼우고 목걸이를 목에 걸고

겔16:12 코고리를 코에 달고 귀고리를 귀에 달고 화려한 왕관을 머리에 씌웠나니

겔16:13 이와 같이 네가 금, 은으로 장식하고 가는 베와 모시와 수놓은 것을 입으며 또 고운 밀가루와 꿀과 기름을 먹음으로 극히 곱고 형통하여 왕후의 지위에 올랐느니라

겔16:14 네 화려함으로 말미암아 네 명성이 이방인 중에 퍼졌음은 내가 네게 입힌 영화로 네 화려함이 온전함이라 나 주 여호와의 말이니라

겔16:15 그러나 네가 네 화려함을 믿고 네 명성을 가지고 행음하되 지나가는 모든 자와 더불어 음란을 많이 행하므로 네 몸이 그들의 것이 되도다

겔16:16 네가 네 의복을 가지고 너를 위하여 각색으로 산당을 꾸미고 거기에서 행음하였나니 이런 일은 전무후무하니라

겔16:17 네가 또 내가 준 금, 은 장식품으로 너를 위하여 남자 우상을 만들어 행음하며

겔16:18 또 네 수놓은 옷을 그 우상에게 입히고 나의 기름과 향을 그 앞에 베풀며

겔16:19 또 내가 네게 주어 먹게 한 내 음식물 곧 고운 밀가루와 기름과 꿀을 네가 그 앞에 베풀어 향기를 삼았나니 과연 그렇게 하였느니라 주 여호와의 말씀이니라

겔16:20 또 네가 나를 위하여 낳은 네 자녀를 그들에게 데리고 가서 드려 제물로 삼아 불살랐느니라 네가 네 음행을 작은 일로 여겨서

겔16:21 나의 자녀들을 죽여 우상에게 넘겨 불 가운데로 지나가게 하였느냐

겔16:22 네가 어렸을 때에 벌거벗은 몸이었으며 피투성이가 되어서 발짓하던 것을 기억하지 아니하고 네가 모든 가증한 일과 음란을 행하였느니라

겔16:23 주 여호와의 말씀이니라 너는 화 있을진저 화 있을진저 네가 모든 악을 행한 후에

겔16:24 너를 위하여 누각을 건축하며 모든 거리에 높은 대를 쌓았도다

겔16:25 네가 높은 대를 모든 길 어귀에 쌓고 네 아름다움을 가증하게 하여 모든 지나가는 자에게 다리를 벌려 심히 음행하고

겔16:26 하체가 큰 네 이웃 나라 애굽 사람과도 음행하되 심히 음란히 하여 내 진노를 샀도다

겔16:27 그러므로 내가 내 손을 네 위에 펴서 네 일용할 양식을 감하고 너를 미워하는 블레셋 여자 곧 네 더러운 행실을 부끄러워하는 자에게 너를 넘겨 임의로 하게 하였거늘

겔16:28 네가 음욕이 차지 아니하여 또 앗수르 사람과 행음하고 그들과 행음하고도 아직도 부족하게 여겨

겔16:29 장사하는 땅 갈대아에까지 심히 행음하되 아직도 족한 줄을 알지 못하였느니라

겔16:30 주 여호와의 말씀이니라 네가 이 모든 일을 행하니 이는 방자한 음녀의 행위라 네 마음이 어찌 그리 약한지

겔16:31 네가 누각을 모든 길 어귀에 건축하며 높은 대를 모든 거리에 쌓고도 값을 싫어하니 창기 같지도 아니하도다

겔16:32 그 남편 대신에 다른 남자들과 내통하여 간음하는 아내로다

겔16:33 사람들은 모든 창기에게 선물을 주거늘 오직 너는 네 모든 정든 자에게 선물을 주며 값을 주어서 사방에서 와서 너와 행음하게 하니

겔16:34 네 음란함이 다른 여인과 같지 아니함은 행음하려고 너를 따르는 자가 없음이며 또 네가 값을 받지 아니하고 도리어 값을 줌이라 그런즉 다른 여인과 같지 아니하니라

겔16:35 그러므로 너 음녀야 여호와의 말씀을 들을지어다

겔16:36 주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 네가 네 누추한 것을 쏟으며 네 정든 자와 행음함으로 벗은 몸을 드러내며 또 가증한 우상을 위하며 네 자녀의 피를 그 우상에게 드렸은즉

겔16:37 내가 너의 즐거워하는 정든 자와 사랑하던 모든 자와 미워하던 모든 자를 모으되 사방에서 모아 너를 대적하게 할 것이요 또 네 벗은 몸을 그 앞에 드러내 그들이 그것을 다 보게 할 것이며

겔16:38 내가 또 간음하고 사람의 피를 흘리는 여인을 심판함 같이 이를 심판하여 진노의 피와 질투의 피를 네게 돌리고

겔16:39 내가 또 너를 그들의 손에 넘기리니 그들이 네 누각을 헐며 네 높은 대를 부수며 네 의복을 벗기고 네 장식품을 빼앗고 네 몸을 벌거벗겨 버려 두며

겔16:40 무리를 데리고 와서 너를 돌로 치며 칼로 찌르며

겔16:41 불로 네 집들을 사르고 여러 여인의 목전에서 너를 벌할지라 내가 너에게 곧 음행을 그치게 하리니 네가 다시는 값을 주지 아니하리라

겔16:42 그리한즉 나는 네게 대한 내 분노가 그치며 내 질투가 네게서 떠나고 마음이 평안하여 다시는 노하지 아니하리라

겔16:43 네가 어렸을 때를 기억하지 아니하고 이 모든 일로 나를 분노하게 하였은즉 내가 네 행위대로 네 머리에 보응하리니 네가 이 음란과 네 모든 가증한 일을 다시는 행하지 아니하리라 주 여호와의 말씀이니라

겔16:44 속담을 말하는 자마다 네게 대하여 속담을 말하기를 어머니가 그러하면 딸도 그러하다 하리라

겔16:45 너는 그 남편과 자녀를 싫어한 어머니의 딸이요 너는 그 남편과 자녀를 싫어한 형의 동생이로다 네 어머니는 헷 사람이요 네 아버지는 아모리 사람이며

겔16:46 네 형은 그 딸들과 함께 네 왼쪽에 거주하는 사마리아요 네 아우는 그 딸들과 함께 네 오른쪽에 거주하는 소돔이라

겔16:47 네가 그들의 행위대로만 행하지 아니하며 그 가증한 대로만 행하지 아니하고 그것을 적게 여겨서 네 모든 행위가 그보다 더욱 부패하였도다

겔16:48 주 여호와의 말씀이니라 내가 나의 삶을 두고 맹세하노니 네 아우 소돔 곧 그와 그의 딸들은 너와 네 딸들의 행위 같이 행하지 아니하였느니라

겔16:49 네 아우 소돔의 죄악은 이러하니 그와 그의 딸들에게 교만함과 음식물의 풍족함과 태평함이 있음이며 또 그가 가난하고 궁핍한 자를 도와주지 아니하며

겔16:50 거만하여 가증한 일을 내 앞에서 행하였음이라 그러므로 내가 보고 곧 그들을 없이 하였느니라

겔16:51 사마리아는 네 죄의 절반도 범하지 아니하였느니라 네가 그들 보다 가증한 일을 심히 행하였으므로 네 모든 가증한 행위로 네 형과 아우를 의롭게 하였느니라

겔16:52 네가 네 형과 아우를 유리하게 판단하였은즉 너도 네 수치를 담당할지니라 네가 그들보다 더욱 가증한 죄를 범하므로 그들이 너보다 의롭게 되었나니 네가 네 형과 아우를 의롭게 하였은즉 너는 놀라며 네 수치를 담당할지니라

겔16:53 내가 그들의 사로잡힘 곧 오돔과 그의 딸들의 사로잡힘과 사마리아와 그의 딸들의 사로잡힘과 그들 중에 너의 사로잡힌 자의 사로잡힘을 풀어 주어

겔16:54 네가 네 수욕을 담당하고 네가 행한 모든 일로 말미암아 부끄럽게 하리니 이는 네가 그들에게 위로가 됨이라

겔16:55 네 아우 소돔과 그의 딸들이 옛 지위를 회복할 것이요 사마리아와 그의 딸들도 그의 옛 지위를 회복할 것이며 너와 네 딸들도 너희 옛 지위를 회복할 것이니라

겔16:56 네가 교만하던 때에 네 아우 소돔을 네 입으로 말하지도 아니 하였나니

겔16:57 곧 네 악이 드러나기 전이며 아람의 딸들이 너를 능욕하기 전이며 너의 사방에 둘러 있는 블레셋의 딸들이 너를 멸시하기 전이니라

겔16:58 네 음란과 네 가증한 일을 네가 담당하였느니라 나 여호와의 말 이니라

겔16:59 나 주 여호와가 이같이 말하노라 네가 맹세를 멸시하여 언약을 배반하였은즉 내가 네 행한 대로 네게 행하리라

겔16:60 그러나 내가 너의 어렸을 때에 너와 세운 언약을 기억하고 너와 영원한 언약을 세우리라

겔16:61 네가 네 형과 아우를 접대할 때에 네 행위를 기억하고 부끄러워할 것이라 내가 그들을 네게 딸로 주려니와 네 언약으로 말미암음이 아니니라

겔16:62 내가 네게 내 언약을 세워 내가 여호와인 줄 네가 알게 하리니

겔16:63 이는 내가 네 모든 행한 일을 용서한 후에 네가 기억하고 놀라고 부끄러워서 다시는 입을 열지 못하게 하려 함이니라 주 여호와의 말씀이니라

시편 58 장.

시58:1 통치자들아 너희가 정의를 말해야 하거늘 어찌 잠잠하냐 인자들아 너희가 올바르게 판결해야 하거늘 어찌 잠잠하냐

시58:2 아직도 너희가 중심에 악을 행하며 땅에서 너희 손으로 폭력을 달아 주는도다

시58:3 악인은 모태에서부터 멀어졌음이여 나면서부터 곁길로 나아가 거짓을 말하는도다

시58:4 그들의 독은 뱀의 독 같으며 그들은 귀를 막은 귀머거리 독사 같으니

시58:5 술사의 홀리는 소리도 듣지 않고 능숙한 술객의 요술도 따르지 아니하는 독사로다

시58:6 하나님이여 그들의 입에서 이를 꺾으소서 여호와여 젊은 사자의 어금니를 꺾어 내시며

시58:7 그들이 급히 흐르는 물 같이 사라지게 하시며 겨누는 화살이 꺾임 같게 하시며

시58:8 소멸하여 가는 달팽이 같게 하시며 만삭되지 못하여 출생한 아이가 햇빛을 보지 못함 같게 하소서

시58:9 가시나무 불이 가마를 뜨겁게 하기 전에 생나무든지 불 붙는 나무든지 강한 바람으로 휩쓸려가게 하소서

시58:10 의인이 악인의 보복 당함을 보고 기뻐함이여 그의 발을 악인의 피에 씻으리로다

시58:11 그 때에 사람의 말이 진실로 의인에게 갚음이 있고 진실로 땅에서 심판하시는 하나님이 계시다 하리로다

시편 59 장.

시59:1 나의 하나님이여 나의 원수에게서 나를 건지시고 일어나 치려는 자에게서 나를 높이 드소서

시59:2 악을 행하는 자에게서 나를 건지시고 피 흘리기를 즐기는 자에게서 나를 구원하소서

시59:3 그들이 나의 생명을 해하려고 엎드려 기다리고 강한 자들이 모여 나를 치려 하오니 여호와여 이는 나의 잘못으로 말미암음이 아니요 나의 죄로 말미암음도 아니로소이다

시59:4 내가 허물이 없으나 그들이 달려와서 스스로 준비하오니 주여 나를 도우시기 위하여 깨어 살펴주소서

시59:5 주님은 만군의 하나님 여호와, 이스라엘의 하나님이시오니 일어나 모든 나라들을 벌하소서 악을 행하는 모든 자들에게 은혜를 베풀지 마소서 (셀라)

시59:6 그들이 저물어 돌아와서 개처럼 울며 성으로 두루 다니고

시59:7 그들의 입으로는 악을 토하며 그들의 입술에는 칼이 있어 이르기를 누가 들으리요 하나이다

시59:8 여호와여 주께서 그들을 비웃으시며 모든 나라들을 조롱하시리이다

시59:9 하나님은 나의 요새이시니 그의 힘으로 말미암아 내가 주를 바라리이다

시59:10 나의 하나님이 그의 인자하심으로 나를 영접하시며 하나님이 나를 원수가 보응 받는 것을 내가 보게 하시리이다

시59:11 그들을 죽이지 마옵소서 나의 백성이 잊을까 하나이다 우리 방패 되신 주여 주의 능력으로 그들을 흩으시고 낮추소서

시59:12 그들의 입술의 말은 곧 그들의 입의 죄라 그들이 말하는 저주와 거짓말로 말미암아 그들이 그 교만한 중에서 사로잡히게 하소서

시59:13 진노하심으로 소멸하시되 없어지기까지 소멸하사 하나님이 야곱 중에서 다스리심을 땅 끝까지 알게 하소서 (셀라)

시59:14 그들에게 저물어 돌아와서 개처럼 울며 성으로 두루 다니게 하소서

시59:15 그들은 먹을 것을 찾아 유리하다가 배부름을 얻지 못하면 밤을 새우려니와

시59:16 나는 주의 힘을 노래하며 아침에 주의 인자하심을 높이 부르오리니 주는 나의 요새이시며 나의 환난 날에 피난처심이니이다

시59:17 나의 힘이시여 내가 주께 찬송하오리니 하나님은 나의 요새이시며 나를 긍휼히 여기시는 하나님 이심이니이다

2 Samuel 8.

8:1 In the course of time, David defeated the Philistines and subdued them, and he took Metheg Ammah from the control of the Philistines.

8:2 David also defeated the Moabites. He made them lie down on the ground and measured them off with a length of cord. Every two lengths of them were put to death, and the third length was allowed to live. So the Moabites became subject to David and brought tribute.

8:3 Moreover, David fought Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah, when he went to restore his control along the Euphrates River.

8:4 David captured a thousand of his chariots, seven thousand charioteers and twenty thousand foot soldiers. He hamstrung all but a hundred of the chariot horses.

8:5 When the Arameans of Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David struck down twenty-two thousand of them.

8:6 He put garrisons in the Aramean kingdom of Damascus, and the Arameans became subject to him and brought tribute. The LORD gave David victory wherever he went.

8:7 David took the gold shields that belonged to the officers of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem.

8:8 From Tebah and Berothai, towns that belonged to Hadadezer, King David took a great quantity of bronze.

8:9 When Tou king of Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire army of Hadadezer,

8:10 he sent his son Joram to King David to greet him and congratulate him on his victory in battle over Hadadezer, who had been at war with Tou. Joram brought with him articles of silver and gold and bronze.

8:11 King David dedicated these articles to the LORD, as he had done with the silver and gold from all the nations he had subdued:

8:12 Edom and Moab, the Ammonites and the Philistines, and Amalek. He also dedicated the plunder taken from Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah.

8:13 And David became famous after he returned from striking down eighteen thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt.

8:14 He put garrisons throughout Edom, and all the Edomites became subject to David. The LORD gave David victory wherever he went.

8:15 David reigned over all Israel, doing what was just and right for all his people.

8:16 Joab son of Zeruiah was over the army; Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was recorder;

8:17 Zadok son of Ahitub and Ahimelech son of Abiathar were priests; Seraiah was secretary;

8:18 Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Kerethites and Pelethites; and David's sons were royal advisers.

2 Samuel 9.

9:1 David asked, "Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan's sake?"

9:2 Now there was a servant of Saul's household named Ziba. They called him to appear before David, and the king said to him, "Are you Ziba?" "Your servant," he replied.

9:3 The king asked, "Is there no one still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show God's kindness?" Ziba answered the king, "There is still a son of Jonathan; he is crippled in both feet."

9:4 "Where is he?" the king asked. Ziba answered, "He is at the house of Makir son of Ammiel in Lo Debar."

9:5 So King David had him brought from Lo Debar, from the house of Makir son of Ammiel.

9:6 When Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David, he bowed down to pay him honor. David said, "Mephibosheth!" "Your servant," he replied.

9:7 "Don't be afraid," David said to him, "for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table."

9:8 Mephibosheth bowed down and said, "What is your servant, that you should notice a dead dog like me?"

9:9 Then the king summoned Ziba, Saul's servant, and said to him, "I have given your master's grandson everything that belonged to Saul and his family.

9:10 You and your sons and your servants are to farm the land for him and bring in the crops, so that your master's grandson may be provided for. And Mephibosheth, grandson of your master, will always eat at my table." (Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.)

9:11 Then Ziba said to the king, "Your servant will do whatever my lord the king commands his servant to do." So Mephibosheth ate at David's table like one of the king's sons.

9:12 Mephibosheth had a young son named Mica, and all the members of Ziba's household were servants of Mephibosheth.

9:13 And Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, because he always ate at the king's table, and he was crippled in both feet.

2 Corinthians 2.

2:1 So I made up my mind that I would not make another painful visit to you.

2:2 For if I grieve you, who is left to make me glad but you whom I have grieved?

2:3 I wrote as I did so that when I came I should not be distressed by those who ought to make me rejoice. I had confidence in all of you, that you would all share my joy.

2:4 For I wrote you out of great distress and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to grieve you but to let you know the depth of my love for you.

2:5 If anyone has caused grief, he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you, to some extent--not to put it too severely.

2:6 The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient for him.

2:7 Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.

2:8 I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him.

2:9 The reason I wrote you was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything.

2:10 If you forgive anyone, I also forgive him. And what I have forgiven--if there was anything to forgive--I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake,

2:11 in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.

2:12 Now when I went to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ and found that the Lord had opened a door for me,

2:13 I still had no peace of mind, because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I said good-by to them and went on to Macedonia.

2:14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him.

2:15 For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.

2:16 To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life. And who is equal to such a task?

2:17 Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, like men sent from God.

Ezekiel 16.

16:1 The word of the LORD came to me:

16:2 "Son of man, confront Jerusalem with her detestable practices

16:3 and say, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says to Jerusalem: Your ancestry and birth were in the land of the Canaanites; your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite.

16:4 On the day you were born your cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water to make you clean, nor were you rubbed with salt or wrapped in cloths.

16:5 No one looked on you with pity or had compassion enough to do any of these things for you. Rather, you were thrown out into the open field, for on the day you were born you were despised.

16:6 "'Then I passed by and saw you kicking about in your blood, and as you lay there in your blood I said to you, "Live!"

16:7 I made you grow like a plant of the field. You grew up and developed and became the most beautiful of jewels. Your breasts were formed and your hair grew, you who were naked and bare.

16:8 "'Later I passed by, and when I looked at you and saw that you were old enough for love, I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your nakedness. I gave you my solemn oath and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Sovereign LORD, and you became mine.

16:9 "'I bathed you with water and washed the blood from you and put ointments on you.

16:10 I clothed you with an embroidered dress and put leather sandals on you. I dressed you in fine linen and covered you with costly garments.

16:11 I adorned you with jewelry: I put bracelets on your arms and a necklace around your neck,

16:12 and I put a ring on your nose, earrings on your ears and a beautiful crown on your head.

16:13 So you were adorned with gold and silver; your clothes were of fine linen and costly fabric and embroidered cloth. Your food was fine flour, honey and olive oil. You became very beautiful and rose to be a queen.

16:14 And your fame spread among the nations on account of your beauty, because the splendor I had given you made your beauty perfect, declares the Sovereign LORD.

16:15 "'But you trusted in your beauty and used your fame to become a prostitute. You lavished your favors on anyone who passed by and your beauty became his.

16:16 You took some of your garments to make gaudy high places, where you carried on your prostitution. Such things should not happen, nor should they ever occur.

16:17 You also took the fine jewelry I gave you, the jewelry made of my gold and silver, and you made for yourself male idols and engaged in prostitution with them.

16:18 And you took your embroidered clothes to put on them, and you offered my oil and incense before them.

16:19 Also the food I provided for you--the fine flour, olive oil and honey I gave you to eat--you offered as fragrant incense before them. That is what happened, declares the Sovereign LORD.

16:20 "'And you took your sons and daughters whom you bore to me and sacrificed them as food to the idols. Was your prostitution not enough?

16:21 You slaughtered my children and sacrificed them to the idols.

16:22 In all your detestable practices and your prostitution you did not remember the days of your youth, when you were naked and bare, kicking about in your blood.

16:23 "'Woe! Woe to you, declares the Sovereign LORD. In addition to all your other wickedness,

16:24 you built a mound for yourself and made a lofty shrine in every public square.

16:25 At the head of every street you built your lofty shrines and degraded your beauty, offering your body with increasing promiscuity to anyone who passed by.

16:26 You engaged in prostitution with the Egyptians, your lustful neighbors, and provoked me to anger with your increasing promiscuity.

16:27 So I stretched out my hand against you and reduced your territory; I gave you over to the greed of your enemies, the daughters of the Philistines, who were shocked by your lewd conduct.

16:28 You engaged in prostitution with the Assyrians too, because you were insatiable; and even after that, you still were not satisfied.

16:29 Then you increased your promiscuity to include Babylonia, a land of merchants, but even with this you were not satisfied.

16:30 "'How weak-willed you are, declares the Sovereign LORD, when you do all these things, acting like a brazen prostitute!

16:31 When you built your mounds at the head of every street and made your lofty shrines in every public square, you were unlike a prostitute, because you scorned payment.

16:32 "'You adulterous wife! You prefer strangers to your own husband!

16:33 Every prostitute receives a fee, but you give gifts to all your lovers, bribing them to come to you from everywhere for your illicit favors.

16:34 So in your prostitution you are the opposite of others; no one runs after you for your favors. You are the very opposite, for you give payment and none is given to you.

16:35 "'Therefore, you prostitute, hear the word of the LORD!

16:36 This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Because you poured out your wealth and exposed your nakedness in your promiscuity with your lovers, and because of all your detestable idols, and because you gave them your children's blood,

16:37 therefore I am going to gather all your lovers, with whom you found pleasure, those you loved as well as those you hated. I will gather them against you from all around and will strip you in front of them, and they will see all your nakedness.

16:38 I will sentence you to the punishment of women who commit adultery and who shed blood; I will bring upon you the blood vengeance of my wrath and jealous anger.

16:39 Then I will hand you over to your lovers, and they will tear down your mounds and destroy your lofty shrines. They will strip you of your clothes and take your fine jewelry and leave you naked and bare.

16:40 They will bring a mob against you, who will stone you and hack you to pieces with their swords.

16:41 They will burn down your houses and inflict punishment on you in the sight of many women. I will put a stop to your prostitution, and you will no longer pay your lovers.

16:42 Then my wrath against you will subside and my jealous anger will turn away from you; I will be calm and no longer angry.

16:43 "'Because you did not remember the days of your youth but enraged me with all these things, I will surely bring down on your head what you have done, declares the Sovereign LORD. Did you not add lewdness to all your other detestable practices?

16:44 "'Everyone who quotes proverbs will quote this proverb about you: "Like mother, like daughter."

16:45 You are a true daughter of your mother, who despised her husband and her children; and you are a true sister of your sisters, who despised their husbands and their children. Your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite.

16:46 Your older sister was Samaria, who lived to the north of you with her daughters; and your younger sister, who lived to the south of you with her daughters, was Sodom.

16:47 You not only walked in their ways and copied their detestable practices, but in all your ways you soon became more depraved than they.

16:48 As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, your sister Sodom and her daughters never did what you and your daughters have done.

16:49 "'Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy.

16:50 They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did awey with them as you have seen.

16:51 Samaria did not commit half the sins you did. You have done more detestable things than they, and have made your sisters seem righteous by all these things you have done.

16:52 Bear your disgrace, for you have furnished some justification for your sisters. Because your sins were more vile than theirs, they appear more righteous than you. So then, be ashamed and bear your disgrace, for you have made your sisters appear righteous.

16:53 "'However, I will restore the fortunes of Sodom and her daughters and of Samaria and her daughters, and your fortunes along with them,

16:54 so that you may bear your disgrace and be ashamed of all you have done in giving them comfort.

16:55 And your sisters, Sodom with her daughters and Samaria with her daughters, will return to what they were before; and you and your daughters will return to what you were before.

16:56 You would not even mention your sister Sodom in the day of your pride,

16:57 before your wickedness was uncovered. Even so, you are now scorned by the daughters of Edom and all her neighbors and the daughters of the Philistines--all those around you who despise you.

16:58 You will bear the consequences of your lewdness and your detestable practices, declares the LORD.

16:59 "'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: I will deal with you as you deserve, because you have despised my oath by breaking the covenant.

16:60 Yet I will remember the covenant I made with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish an everlasting covenant with you.

16:61 Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed when you receive your sisters, both those who are older than you and those who are younger. I will give them to you as daughters, but not on the basis of my covenant with you.

16:62 So I will establish my covenant with you, and you will know that I am the LORD.

16:63 Then, when I make atonement for you for all you have done, you will remember and be ashamed and never again open your mouth because of your humiliation, declares the Sovereign LORD.'"

Psalms 58.

58:1 Do you rulers indeed speak justly? Do you judge uprightly among men?

58:2 No, in your heart you devise injustice, and your hands mete out violence on the earth.

58:3 Even from birth the wicked go astray; from the womb they are wayward and speak lies.

58:4 Their venom is like the venom of a snake, like that of a cobra that has stopped its ears,

58:5 that will not heed the tune of the charmer, however skillful the enchanter may be.

58:6 Break the teeth in their mouths, O God; tear out, O LORD, the fangs of the lions!

58:7 Let them vanish like water that flows away; when they draw the bow, let their arrows be blunted.

58:8 Like a slug melting away as it moves along, like a stillborn child, may they not see the sun.

58:9 Before your pots can feel the heat of the thorns--whether they be green or dry--the wicked will be swept away.

58:10 The righteous will be glad when they are avenged, when they bathe their feet in the blood of the wicked.

58:11 Then men will say, "Surely the righteous still are rewarded; surely there is a God who judges the earth."

Psalms 59.

59:1 Deliver me from my enemies, O God; protect me from those who rise up against me.

59:2 Deliver me from evildoers and save me from bloodthirsty men.

59:3 See how they lie in wait for me! Fierce men conspire against me for no offense or sin of mine, O LORD.

59:4 I have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me. Arise to help me; look on my plight!

59:5 O LORD God Almighty, the God of Israel, rouse yourself to punish all the nations; show no mercy to wicked traitors. Selah

59:6 They return at evening, snarling like dogs, and prowl about the city.

59:7 See what they spew from their mouths--they spew out swords from their lips, and they say, "Who can hear us?"

59:8 But you, O LORD, laugh at them; you scoff at all those nations.

59:9 O my Strength, I watch for you; you, O God, are my fortress,

59:10 my loving God. God will go before me and will let me gloat over those who slander me.

59:11 But do not kill them, O Lord our shield, or my people will forget. In your might make them wander about, and bring them down.

59:12 For the sins of their mouths, for the words of their lips, let them be caught in their pride. For the curses and lies they utter,

59:13 consume them in wrath, consume them till they are no more. Then it will be known to the ends of the earth that God rules over Jacob. Selah

59:14 They return at evening, snarling like dogs, and prowl about the city.

59:15 They wander about for food and howl if not satisfied.

59:16 But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble.

59:17 O my Strength, I sing praise to you; you, O God, are my fortress, my loving God.
