열왕기상 1 장.

왕상1:1 다윗 왕이 나이가 많아 늙으니 이불을 덮어도 따뜻하지 아니한지라

왕상1:2 그의 시종들이 왕께 아뢰되 우리 주 왕을 위하여 젊은 처녀 하나를 구하여 그로 왕을 받들어 모시게 하고 왕의 품에 누워 우리 주 왕으로 따뜻하시게 하리이다 하고

왕상1:3 이스라엘 사방 영토 내에 아리따운 처녀를 구하던 중 수넴 여자 아비삭을 얻어 왕께 데려왔으니

왕상1:4 이 처녀는 심히 아름다워 그가 왕을 받들어 시중들었으나 왕이 잠자리는 같이 하지 아니하였더라

왕상1:5 그 때에 학깃의 아들 아도니야가 스스로 높여서 이르기를 내가 왕이 되리라 하고 자기를 위하여 병거와 기병과 호위병 오십 명을 준비하니

왕상1:6 그는 압살롬 다음에 태어난 자요 용모가 심히 준수한 자라 그의 아버지가 네가 어찌하여 그리 하였느냐고 하는 말로 한 번도 그를 섭섭하게 한 일이 없었더라

왕상1:7 아도니야가 스루야의 아들 요압과 제사장 아비아달과 모의하니 그들이 따르고 도우나

왕상1:8 제사장 사독과 여호야다의 아들 브나야와 선지자 나단과 시므이와 레이와 다윗의 용사들은 아도니야와 같이 하지 아니하였더라

왕상1:9 아도니야가 에느로겔 근방 소헬렛 바위 곁에서 양과 소와 살찐 송아지들 잡고 왕자 곧 자기의 모든 동생과 왕의 신하 된 유다 모든 사람을 다 청하였으나

왕상1:10 선지자 나단과 브나야와 용사들과 자기 동생 솔로몬은 청하지 아니하였더라

왕상1:11 나단이 솔로몬의 어머니 밧세바에게 말하여 이르되 학깃의 아들 아도니야가 왕이 되었음을 듣지 못하였나이까 우리 주 다윗은 알지 못하시나이다

왕상1:12 이제 내게 당신의 생명과 당신의 아들 솔로몬의 생명을 구할 계책을 말하도록 허락하소서

왕상1:13 당신은 다윗 왕 앞에 들어가서 아뢰기를 내 주 왕이여 전에 왕이 여종에게 맹세하여 이르시기를 네 아들 솔로몬이 반드시 나를 이어 왕이 되어 내 왕위에 앉으리라 하지 아니하셨나이까 그런데 아도니야가 무슨 이유로 왕이 되었나이까 하소서

왕상1:14 당신이 거기서 왕과 말씀하실 때에 나도 뒤이어 들어가서 당신의 말씀을 확증하리이다

왕상1:15 밧세바가 이에 침실에 들어가 왕에게 이르니 왕이 심히 늙었으므로 수넴 여자 아비삭이 시중들었더라

왕상1:16 밧세바가 몸을 굽혀 왕께 절하니 왕이 이르되 어찌 됨이냐

왕상1:17 그가 왕께 대답하되 내 주여 왕이 전에 왕의 하나님 여호와를 가리켜 여종에게 맹세하시기를 네 아들 솔로몬이 반드시 나를 이어 왕이 되어 내 왕위에 앉으리라 하셨거늘

왕상1:18 이제 아도니야가 왕이 되었어도 내 주 왕은 알지 못하시나이다

왕상1:19 그가 수소와 살찐 송아지와 양을 많이 잡고 왕의 모든 아들과 제사장 아바아달과 군사령관 요압을 청하였으나 왕의 종 솔로몬은 청하지 아니하였나이다

왕상1:20 내 주 왕이여 온 이스라엘이 왕에게 다 주목하고 누가 내 주 왕을 이어 그 왕위에 앉을 것을 공포하시기를 기다리나이다

왕상1:21 그렇지 아니하면 내 주 왕께서 그의 조상들과 함께 잘 때에 나와 내 아들 솔로몬은 죄인이 되리이다

왕상1:22 밧세바가 왕과 말할 때에 선지자 나단이 들어온지라

왕상1:23 어떤 사람이 왕께 말하여 이르되 선지자 나단이 여기 있나이다 하니 그가 왕 앞에 들어와서 얼굴을 땅에 대고 왕께 절하고

왕상1:24 이르되 내 주 왕께서 이르시기를 아도니야가 나를 이어 왕이 되어 내 왕위에 앉으리라 하셨나이까

왕상1:25 그가 오늘 내려가서 수소와 살찐 송아지와 양을 많이 잡고 왕의 모든 아들과 군사령관들과 제사장 아비아달을 청하였는데 그들이 아도니야 앞에서 먹고 마시며 아도니야 왕은 만세수를 하옵소서 하였나이다

왕상1:26 그러나 왕의 종 나와 제사장 사독과 여호야다의 아들 브나야와 왕의 종 솔로몬은 청하지 아니하였사오니

왕상1:27 이것이 내 주 왕께서 정하신 일이니이까 그런데 왕께서 내 주 왕을 이어 그 왕위에 앉을 자를 종에게 알게 하지 아니하셨나이다

왕상1:28 다윗 왕이 명령하여 이르되 밧세바를 내 앞으로 부르라 하매 그가 왕의 앞으로 들어가 그 앞에 서는지라

왕상1:29 왕이 이르되 내 생명을 모든 환난에서 구하신 여호와께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하노라

왕상1:30 내가 이전에 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와를 가리켜 네게 맹세하여 이르기를 네 아들 솔로몬이 반드시 나를 이어 왕이 되고 나를 대신하여 내 왕위에 앉으리라 하였으니 내가 오늘 그대로 행하리라

왕상1:31 밧세바가 얼굴을 땅에 대고 절하며 내 주 다윗 왕은 만세수를 하옵소서 하니라

왕상1:32 다윗 왕이 이르되 제사장 사독과 선지자 나단과 여호야다의 아들 브나야를 내 앞으로 부르라 하니 그들이 왕 앞에 이른지라

왕상1:33 왕이 그들에게 이르되 너희는 너희 주의 신하들을 데리고 내 아들 솔로몬을 내 노새에 태우고 기혼으로 인도하여 내려가고

왕상1:34 거기서 제사장 사독과 선지자 나단은 그에게 기름을 부어 이스라엘 왕으로 삼고 너희는 뿔 나팔을 불며 솔로몬 왕은 만세수를 하옵소서 하고

왕상1:35 그를 따라 올라오라 그가 와서 내 왕위에 앉아 나를 대신하여 왕이 되리라 내가 그를 세워 이스라엘과 유다의 통치자로 지명하였느니라

왕상1:36 여호야다의 아들 브나야가 왕께 대답하여 이르되 아멘 내 주 왕의 하나님 여호와께서도 이렇게 말씀하시기를 원하오며

왕상1:37 또 여호와께서 내 주 왕과 함께 계심 같이 솔로몬과 함께 계셔서 그의 왕위를 내 주 다윗 왕의 왕위보다 더 크게 하시기를 원하나이다 하니라

왕상1:38 제사장 사독과 선지자 나단과 여호야다의 아들 브나야와 그렛 사람과 블렛 사람이 내려가서 솔로몬을 다윗 왕의 노새에 내우고 인도하여 기혼으로 가서

왕상1:39 제사장 사독이 성막 가운데에서 기름 담은 뿔을 가져다가 솔로몬에게 기름을 부으니 이에 뿔 나팔을 불고 모든 백성이 솔로몬 왕은 만세수를 하옵소서 하니라

왕상1:40 모든 백성이 그를 따라 올라와서 피리를 불며 크게 즐거워하므로 땅이 그들의 소리로 말미암아 갈라질 듯하니

왕상1:41 아도니야와 그와 함께 한 손님들이 먹기를 마칠 때에 다 들은지라 요압이 뿔나팔 소리를 듣고 이르되 어찌하여 성읍 중에서 소리가 요란하냐

왕상1:42 말할 때에 제사장 아비아달의 아들 요나단이 오는지라 아도니야가 이르되 들어오라 너는 용사라 아름다운 소식을 가져오는도다

왕상1:43 요나단이 아도니야에게 대답하여 이르되 과연 우리 주 다윗 왕이 솔로몬을 왕으로 삼으셨나이다

왕상1:44 왕께서 제사장 사독과 선지자 나단과 여호야다의 아들 브나야와 그렛 사람과 블렛 사람을 솔로몬과 함께 보내셨는데 그들 무리가 왕의 노새에 솔로몬을 태워다가

왕상1:45 제사장 사독과 선지자 나단이 기혼에서 기름을 부어 왕으로 삼고 무리가 그 곳에서 올라오며 즐거워하므로 성읍이 진동하였나니 당신들에게 들린 소리가 이것이라

왕상1:46 또 솔로몬도 왕좌에 앉아 있고

왕상1:47 왕의 신하들도 와서 우리 주 다윗 왕에게 축복하여 이르기를 왕의 하나님이 솔로몬의 이름을 왕의 이름보다 더 아름답게 하시고 그의 왕위를 왕의 위보다 크게 하시기를 원하나이다 하매 왕이 침상에서 몸을 굽히고

왕상1:48 또한 이르시기를 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와를 찬송하리로다 여호와께서 오늘 내 왕위에 앉을 자를 주사 내 눈으로 보게 하셨도다 하셨나이다 하니

왕상1:49 아도니야와 함께 한 손님들이 다 놀라 일어나 각기 갈 길로 간지라

왕상1:50 아도니야도 솔로몬을 두려워하여 일어나 가서 제단 뿔을 잡으니

왕상1:51 어떤 사람이 솔로몬에게 말하여 이르되 아도니야가 솔로몬 왕을 두려워하여 지금 제단 뿔을 잡고 말하기를 솔로몬 왕이 오늘 칼로 자기 종을 죽이지 않겠다고 내게 맹세하기를 원한다 하나이다

왕상1:52 솔로몬이 이르되 그가 만일 선한 사람일진대 그의 머리털 하나도 땅에 떨어지지 아니하려니와 그에게 악한 것이 보이면 죽으리라 하고

왕상1:53 사람을 보내어 그를 제단에서 이끌어 내리니 그가 와서 솔로몬 왕께 절하매 솔로몬이 이르기를 네 집으로 가라 하였더라

갈라디아서 5 장.

갈5:1 그리스도께서 우리를 자유롭게 하려고 자유를 주셨으니 그러므로 굳건하게 서서 다시는 종의 멍에를 메지 말라

갈5:2 보라 나 바울은 너희에게 말하노니 너희가 만일 할례를 받으면 그리스도께서 너희에게 아무 유익이 없으리라

갈5:3 내가 할례를 받는 각 사람에게 다시 증언하노니 그는 율법 전체를 행할 의무를 가진 자라

갈5:4 율법 안에서 의롭다 함을 얻으려 하는 너희는 그리스도에게서 끊어지고 은혜에서 떨어진 자로다

갈5:5 우리가 성령으로 믿음을 따라 의의 소망을 기다리노니

갈5:6 그리스도 예수 안에서는 할례나 무할례나 효력이 없으되 사랑으로써 역사하는 믿음뿐이니라

갈5:7 너희가 달음질을 잘하더니 누가 너희를 막아 진리를 순종하지 못하게 하더냐

갈5:8 그 권면은 너희를 부르신 이에게서 난 것이 아니니라

갈5:9 적은 누룩이 온 덩이에 퍼지느니라

갈5:10 나는 너희가 아무 다른 마음을 품지 아니할 줄을 주 안에서 확신하노라 그러나 너희를 요동하게 하는 자는 누구든지 심판을 받으리라

갈5:11 형제들아 내가 지금까지 할례를 전한다면 어찌하여 지금까지 박해를 받으리요 그리하였으면 십자가의 걸림돌이 제거되었으리니

갈5:12 너희를 어지럽게 하는 자들은 스스로 베어 버리기를 원하노라

갈5:13 형제들아 너희가 자유를 위하여 부르심을 입었으나 그러나 그 자유로 육체의 기회를 삼지 말고 오직 사랑으로 서로 종 노릇 하라

갈5:14 온 율법은 네 이웃 사랑하기를 네 자신 같이 하라 하신 한 말씀에서 이루어졌나니

갈5:15 만일 서로 물고 먹으면 피차 멸망할까 조심하라

갈5:16 내가 이르노니 너희는 성령을 따라 행하라 그리하면 육체의 욕심을 이루지 아니하리라

갈5:17 육체의 소욕은 성령을 거스르고 성령은 육체를 거스르나니 이 둘이 서로 대적함으로 너희가 원하는 것을 하지 못하게 하려 함이니라

갈5:18 너희가 만일 성령의 인도하시는 바가 되면 율법 아래에 있지 아니하리라

갈5:19 육체의 일은 분명하니 곧 음행과 더러운 것과 호색과

갈5:20 우상 숭배와 주술과 원수 맺는 것과 분쟁과 시기와 분냄과 당 짓는 것과 분열함과 이단과

갈5:21 투기와 술 취함과 방탕함과 또 그와 같은 것들이라 전에 너희에게 경계한 것 같이 경계하노니 이런 일을 하는 자들은 하나님의 나라를 유업으로 받지 못할 것이요

갈5:22 오직 성령의 열매는 사랑과 희락과 화평과 오래 참음과 자비와 양선과 충성과

갈5:23 온유와 절제니 이같은 것을 금지할 법이 없느니라

갈5:24 그리스도 예수의 사람들은 육체와 함께 그 정욕과 탐심을 십자가에 못 박았느니라

갈5:25 만일 우리가 성령으로 살면 또한 성령으로 행할지니

갈5:26 헛된 영광을 구하여 서로 노엽게 하거나 서로 투기하지 말지니라

에스겔 32 장.

겔32:1 열두째 해 열두째 달 초하루에 여호와의 말씀이 내게 임하여 이르시되

겔32:2 인자야 너는 애굽의 바로 왕에 대하여 슬픈 노래를 불러 그에게 이르라 너를 여러 나라에서 사자로 생각하였더니 실상은 바다 가운데의 큰 악어라 강에서 튀어 일어나 발로 물을 휘저어 그 강을 더럽혔도다

겔32:3 주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 내가 많은 백성의 무리를 거느리고 내 그물을 네 위에 치고 그 그물로 너를 끌어오리로다

겔32:4 내가 너를 뭍에 버리며 들에 던져 공중의 새들이 네 위에 앉게 할 것임이여 온 땅의 짐승이 너를 먹어 배부르게 하리로다

겔32:5 내가 네 살점을 여러 산에 두며 네 시체를 여러 골짜기에 채울 것임이여

겔32:6 네 피로 네 헤엄치는 땅에 물 대듯하여 산에 미치게 하며 그 모든 개천을 채우리로다

겔32:7 내가 너를 불 끄듯 할 때에 하늘을 가리어 별을 어둡게 하며 해를 구름으로 가리며 달이 빛을 내지 못하게 할 것임이여

겔32:8 하늘의 모든 밝은 빛을 내가 네 위에서 어둡게 하여 어둠을 네 땅에 베풀리로다 주 여호와의 말씀이니라

겔32:9 내가 네 패망의 소문이 여러 나라 곧 네가 알지 못하는 나라들에 이르게 할 때에 많은 백성의 마음을 번뇌하게 할 것임이여

겔32:10 내가 그 많은 백성을 너로 말미암아 놀라게 할 것이며 내가 내 칼이 그들의 왕 앞에서 춤추게 할 때에 그 왕이 너로 말미암아 심히 두려워할 것이며 네가 엎드러지는 날에 그들이 각각 자기 생명을 위하여 무시로 떨리로다

겔32:11 주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 바벨론 왕의 칼이 네게 오리로다

겔32:12 나는 네 무리가 용사 곧 모든 나라의 무서운 자들의 칼에 엎드러지게 할 것임이여 그들이 애굽의 교만을 폐하며 그 모든 무리를 멸하리로다

겔32:13 내가 또 그 모든 짐승을 큰 물가에서 멸하리니 사람의 발이나 짐승의 굽이 다시는 그 물을 흐리지 못할 것임이여

겔32:14 그 때에 내가 그 물을 맑게 하여 그 강이 기름 같이 흐르게 하리로다 주 여호와의 말씀이니라

겔32:15 내가 애굽 땅이 황폐하며 사막이 되게 하여 거기에 풍성한 것이 없게 할 것임이여 그 가운데의 모든 주민을 치리니 내가 여호와인 줄을 그들이 알리라

겔32:16 이는 슬피 부를 노래이니 여러 나라 여자들이 이것을 슬피 부름이여 애굽과 그 모든 무리를 위하여 이것을 슬피 부르리로다 주 여호와의 말씀이니라

겔32:17 열두째 해 어느 달 열다섯째 날에 여호와의 말씀이 내게 임하여 이르시되

겔32:18 인자야 애굽의 무리를 위하여 슬피 울고 그와 유명한 나라의 여자들을 구덩이에 내려가는 자와 함께 지하에 던지며

겔32:19 이르라 너의 아름다움이 어떤 사람들보다도 뛰어나도다 너는 내려가서 할례를 받지 아니한 자와 함께 누울지어다

겔32:20 그들이 죽임을 당한 자 가운데에 엎드러질 것임이여 그는 칼에 넘겨진 바 되었은즉 그와 그 모든 무리를 끌지어다

겔32:21 용사 가운데에 강한 자가 그를 돕는 자와 함께 스올 가운데에서 그에게 말함이여 할례를 받지 아니한 자 곧 칼에 죽임을 당한 자들이 내려와서 가만히 누웠다 하리로다

겔32:22 거기에 앗수르와 그 온 무리가 있음이여 다 죽임을 당하여 칼에 엎드러진 자라 그 무덤이 그 사방에 있도다

겔32:23 그 무덤이 구덩이 깊은 곳에 만들어졌고 그 무리가 그 무덤 사방에 있음이여 그들은 다 죽임을 당하여 칼에 엎드러진 자 곧 생존하는 사람들의 세상에서 사람을 두렵게 하던 자로다

겔32:24 거기에 엘람이 있고 그 모든 무리가 그 무덤 사방에 있음이여 그들은 다 할례를 받지 못하고 죽임을 당하여 칼에 엎드러져 지하에 내려간 자로다 그들이 생존하는 사람들의 세상에서 두렵게 하였으나 이제는 구덩이에 내려가는 자와 함께 수치를 당하였도다

겔32:25 그와 그 모든 무리를 위하여 죽임을 당한 자 가운데에 침상을 놓았고 그 여러 무덤은 사방에 있음이여 그들은 다 할례를 받지 못하고 칼에 죽임을 당한 자로다 그들이 생존하는 사람들의 세상에서 두렵게 하였으나 이제는 구덩이에 내려가는 자와 함께 수치를 당하고 죽임을 당한 자 가운데에 뉘었도다

겔32:26 거기에 메섹과 두발과 그 모든 무리가 있고 그 여러 무덤은 사방에 있음이여 그들은 다 할례를 받지 못하고 칼에 죽임을 당한 자로다 그들이 생존하는 사람들의 세상에서 두렵게 하였으나

겔32:27 그들이 할례를 받지 못한 자 가운데에 이미 엎드러진 용사와 함께 누운 것이 마땅하지 아니하냐 이 용사들은 다 무기를 가지고 스올에 내려가서 자기의 칼을 베개로 삼았으니 그 백골이 자기 죄악을 졌음이여 생존하는 사람들의 세상에서 용사의 두려움이 있던 자로다

겔32:28 오직 너는 할례를 받지 못한 자와 함께 패망할 것임이여 칼에 죽임을 당한 자와 함께 누우리로다

겔32:29 거기에 에돔 곧 그 왕들과 그 모든 고관이 있음이여 그들이 강성하였었으나 칼에 죽임을 당한 자와 함께 있겠고 할례를 받지 못하고 구덩이에 내려간 자와 함께 누우리로다

겔32:30 거기에 죽임을 당한 자와 함께 내려간 북쪽 모든 방백과 모든 시돈 사람이 있음이여 그들이 본래는 강성하였으므로 두렵게 하였으나 이제는 부끄러움을 품고 할례를 받지 못하고 칼에 죽임을 당한 자와 함께 누웠고 구덩이에 내려가는 자와 함께 수치를 당하였도다

겔32:31 바로가 그들을 보고 그 모든 무리로 말미암아 위로를 받을 것임이여 칼에 죽임을 당한 바로와 그 온 군대가 그러하리로다 주 여호와의 말씀이니라

겔32:32 내가 바로로 하여금 생존하는 사람들의 세상에서 사람을 두렵게 하게 하였으나 이제는 그가 그 모든 무리와 더불어 할례를 받지 못한 자 곧 칼에 죽임을 당한 자와 함께 누이리로다 주 여호와의 말씀이니라

시편 80 장.

시80:1 요셉을 양 떼 같이 인도하시는 이스라엘의 목자여 귀를 기울이소서 그룹 사이에 좌정하신 이여 빛을 비추소서

시80:2 에브라임과 베냐민과 므낫세 앞에서 주의 능력을 나타내사 우리를 구원하러 오소서

시80:3 하나님이여 우리를 돌이키시고 주의 얼굴빛을 비추사 우리가 구원을 얻게 하소서

시80:4 만군의 하나님 여호와여 주의 백성의 기도에 대하여 어느 때까지 노하시리이까

시80:5 주께서 그들에게 눈물의 양식을 먹이시며 많은 눈물을 마시게 하셨나이다

시80:6 우리를 우리 이웃에게 다툼 거리가 되게 하시니 우리 원수들이 서로 비웃나이다

시80:7 만군의 하나님이여 우리를 회복하여 주시고 주의 얼굴의 광채를 비추사 우리가 구원을 얻게 하소서

시80:8 주께서 한 포도나무를 애굽에서 가져다가 민족들을 쫓아내시고 그것을 심으셨나이다

시80:9 주께서 그 앞서 가꾸셨으므로 그 뿌리가 깊이 박혀서 땅에 가득하며

시80:10 그 그늘이 산들을 가리고 그 가지는 하나님의 백향목 같으며

시80:11 그 가지가 바다까지 뻗고 넝쿨이 강까지 미쳤거늘

시80:12 주께서 어찌하여 그 담을 허시사 길을 지나가는 모든 이들이 그것을 따게 하셨나이까

시80:13 숲 속의 멧돼지들이 상해하며 들짐승들이 먹나이다

시80:14 만군의 하나님이여 구하옵나니 돌아오소서 하늘에서 굽어보시고 이 포도나무를 돌보소서

시80:15 주의 오른손으로 심으신 줄기요 주를 위하여 힘있게 하신 가지니이다

시80:16 그것이 불타고 베임을 당하며 주의 면책으로 말미암아 멸망하오니

시80:17 주의 오른쪽에 있는 자 곧 주를 위하여 힘있게 하신 인자에게 주의 손을 얹으소서

시80:18 그리하시면 우리가 주에게서 물러가지 아니하오리니 우리를 소생하게 하소서 우리가 주의 이름을 부르리이다

시80:19 만군의 하나님 여호와여 우리를 돌이켜 주시고 주의 얼굴의 광채를 우리에게 비추소서 우리가 구원을 얻으리이다

1 Kings 1.

1:1 When King David was old and well advanced in years, he could not keep warm even when they put covers over him.

1:2 So his servants said to him, "Let us look for a young virgin to attend the king and take care of him. She can lie beside him so that our lord the king may keep warm."

1:3 Then they searched throughout Israel for a beautiful girl and found Abishag, a Shunammite, and brought her to the king.

1:4 The girl was very beautiful; she took care of the king and waited on him, but the king had no intimate relations with her.

1:5 Now Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, put himself forward and said, "I will be king." So he got chariots and horses ready, with fifty men to run ahead of him.

1:6 (His father had never interfered with him by asking, "Why do you behave as you do?" He was also very handsome and was born next after Absalom.)

1:7 Adonijah conferred with Joab son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest, and they gave him their support.

1:8 But Zadok the priest, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet, Shimei and Rei and David's special guard did not join Adonijah.

1:9 Adonijah then sacrificed sheep, cattle and fattened calves at the Stone of Zoheleth near En Rogel. He invited all his brothers, the king's sons, and all the men of Judah who were royal officials,

1:10 but he did not invite Nathan the prophet or Benaiah or the special guard or his brother Solomon.

1:11 Then Nathan asked Bathsheba, Solomon's mother, "Have you not heard that Adonijah, the son of Haggith, has become king without our lord David's knowing it?

1:12 Now then, let me advise you how you can save your own life and the life of your son Solomon.

1:13 Go in to King David and say to him, 'My lord the king, did you not swear to me your servant: "Surely Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne"? Why then has Adonijah become king?'

1:14 While you are still there talking to the king, I will come in and confirm what you have said."

1:15 So Bathsheba went to see the aged king in his room, where Abishag the Shunammite was attending him.

1:16 Bathsheba bowed low and knelt before the king. "What is it you want?" the king asked.

1:17 She said to him, "My lord, you yourself swore to me your servant by the LORD your God: 'Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne.'

1:18 But now Adonijah has become king, and you, my lord the king, do not know about it.

1:19 He has sacrificed great numbers of cattle, fattened calves, and sheep, and has invited all the king's sons, Abiathar the priest and Joab the commander of the army, but he has not invited Solomon your servant.

1:20 My lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are on you, to learn from you who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.

1:21 Otherwise, as soon as my lord the king is laid to rest with his fathers, I and my son Solomon will be treated as criminals."

1:22 While she was still speaking with the king, Nathan the prophet arrived.

1:23 And they told the king, "Nathan the prophet is here." So he went before the king and bowed with his face to the ground.

1:24 Nathan said, "Have you, my lord the king, declared that Adonijah shall be king after you, and that he will sit on your throne?

1:25 Today he has gone down and sacrificed great numbers of cattle, fattened calves, and sheep. He has invited all the king's sons, the commanders of the army and Abiathar the priest. Right now they are eating and drinking with him and saying, 'Long live King Adonijah!'

1:26 But me your servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and your servant Solomon he did not invite.

1:27 Is this something my lord the king has done without letting his servants know who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?"

1:28 Then King David said, "Call in Bathsheba." So she came into the king's presence and stood before him.

1:29 The king then took an oath: "As surely as the LORD lives, who has delivered me out of every trouble,

1:30 I will surely carry out today what I swore to you by the LORD, the God of Israel: Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne in my place."

1:31 Then Bathsheba bowed low with her face to the ground and, kneeling before the king, said, "May my lord King David live forever!"

1:32 King David said, "Call in Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet and Benaiah son of Jehoiada." When they came before the king,

1:33 he said to them: "Take your lord's servants with you and set Solomon my son on my own mule and take him down to Gihon.

1:34 There have Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him king over Israel. Blow the trumpet and shout, 'Long live King Solomon!'

1:35 Then you are to go up with him, and he is to come and sit on my throne and reign in my place. I have appointed him ruler over Israel and Judah."

1:36 Benaiah son of Jehoiada answered the king, "Amen! May the LORD, the God of my lord the king, so declare it.

1:37 As the LORD was with my lord the king, so may he be with Solomon to make his throne even greater than the throne of my lord King David!"

1:38 So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Kerethites and the Pelethites went down and put Solomon on King David's mule and escorted him to Gihon.

1:39 Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the sacred tent and anointed Solomon. Then they sounded the trumpet and all the people shouted, "Long live King Solomon!"

1:40 And all the people went up after him, playing flutes and rejoicing greatly, so that the ground shook with the sound.

1:41 Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they were finishing their feast. On hearing the sound of the trumpet, Joab asked, "What's the meaning of all the noise in the city?"

1:42 Even as he was speaking, Jonathan son of Abiathar the priest arrived. Adonijah said, "Come in. A worthy man like you must be bringing good news."

1:43 "Not at all!" Jonathan answered. "Our lord King David has made Solomon king.

1:44 The king has sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Kerethites and the Pelethites, and they have put him on the king's mule,

1:45 and Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king at Gihon. From there they have gone up cheering, and the city resounds with it. That's the noise you hear.

1:46 Moreover, Solomon has taken his seat on the royal throne.

1:47 Also, the royal officials have come to congratulate our lord King David, saying, 'May your God make Solomon's name more famous than yours and his throne greater than yours!' And the king bowed in worship on his bed

1:48 and said, 'Praise be to the LORD, the God of Israel, who has allowed my eyes to see a successor on my throne today.'"

1:49 At this, all Adonijah's guests rose in alarm and dispersed.

1:50 But Adonijah, in fear of Solomon, went and took hold of the horns of the altar.

1:51 Then Solomon was told, "Adonijah is afraid of King Solomon and is clinging to the horns of the altar. He says, 'Let King Solomon swear to me today that he will not put his servant to death with the sword.'"

1:52 Solomon replied, "If he shows himself to be a worthy man, not a hair of his head will fall to the ground; but if evil is found in him, he will die."

1:53 Then King Solomon sent men, and they brought him down from the altar. And Adonijah came and bowed down to King Solomon, and Solomon said, "Go to your home."

Galatians 5.

5:1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

5:2 Mark my words! I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no value to you at all.

5:3 Again I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law.

5:4 You who are trying to be justified by law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.

5:5 But by faith we eagerly await through the Spirit the righteousness for which we hope.

5:6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.

5:7 You were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth?

5:8 That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you.

5:9 "A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough."

5:10 I am confident in the Lord that you will take no other view. The one who is throwing you into confusion will pay the penalty, whoever he may be.

5:11 Brothers, if I am still preaching circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been abolished.

5:12 As for those agitators, I wish they would go the whole way and emasculate themselves!

5:13 You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love.

5:14 The entire law is summed up in a single command: "Love your neighbor as yourself."

5:15 If you keep on biting and devouring each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.

5:16 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.

5:17 For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want.

5:18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law.

5:19 The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery;

5:20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions

5:21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

5:23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

5:24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires.

5:25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

5:26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

Ezekiel 32.

32:1 In the twelfth year, in the twelfth month on the first day, the word of the LORD came to me:

32:2 "Son of man, take up a lament concerning Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him: "'You are like a lion among the nations; you are like a monster in the seas thrashing about in your streams, churning the water with your feet and muddying the streams.

32:3 "'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: "'With a great throng of people I will cast my net over you, and they will haul you up in my net.

32:4 I will throw you on the land and hurl you on the open field. I will let all the birds of the air settle on you and all the beasts of the earth gorge themselves on you.

32:5 I will spread your flesh on the mountains and fill the valleys with your remains.

32:6 I will drench the land with your flowing blood all the way to the mountains, and the ravines will be filled with your flesh.

32:7 When I snuff you out, I will cover the heavens and darken their stars; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon will not give its light.

32:8 All the shining lights in the heavens I will darken over you; I will bring darkness over your land, declares the Sovereign LORD.

32:9 I will trouble the hearts of many peoples when I bring about your destruction among the nations, among lands you have not known.

32:10 I will cause many peoples to be appalled at you, and their kings will shudder with horror because of you when I brandish my sword before them. On the day of your downfall each of them will tremble every moment for his life.

32:11 "'For this is what the Sovereign LORD says: "'The sword of the king of Babylon will come against you.

32:12 I will cause your hordes to fall by the swords of mighty men--the most ruthless of all nations. They will shatter the pride of Egypt, and all her hordes will be overthrown.

32:13 I will destroy all her cattle from beside abundant waters no longer to be stirred by the foot of man or muddied by the hoofs of cattle.

32:14 Then I will let her waters settle and make her streams flow like oil, declares the Sovereign LORD.

32:15 When I make Egypt desolate and strip the land of everything in it, when I strike down all who live there, then they will know that I am the LORD.'

32:16 "This is the lament they will chant for her. The daughters of the nations will chant it; for Egypt and all her hordes they will chant it, declares the Sovereign LORD."

32:17 In the twelfth year, on the fifteenth day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me:

32:18 "Son of man, wail for the hordes of Egypt and consign to the earth below both her and the daughters of mighty nations, with those who go down to the pit.

32:19 Say to them, 'Are you more favored than others? Go down and be laid among the uncircumcised.'

32:20 They will fall among those killed by the sword. The sword is drawn; let her be dragged off with all her hordes.

32:21 From within the grave the mighty leaders will say of Egypt and her allies, 'They have come down and they lie with the uncircumcised, with those killed by the sword.'

32:22 "Assyria is there with her whole army; she is surrounded by the graves of all her slain, all who have fallen by the sword.

32:23 Their graves are in the depths of the pit and her army lies around her grave. All who had spread terror in the land of the living are slain, fallen by the sword.

32:24 "Elam is there, with all her hordes around her grave. All of them are slain, fallen by the sword. All who had spread terror in the land of the living went down uncircumcised to the earth below. They bear their shame with those who go down to the pit.

32:25 A bed is made for her among the slain, with all her hordes around her grave. All of them are uncircumcised, killed by the sword. Because their terror had spread in the land of the living, they bear their shame with those who go down to the pit; they are laid among the slain.

32:26 "Meshech and Tubal are there, with all their hordes around their graves. All of them are uncircumcised, killed by the sword because they spread their terror in the land of the living.

32:27 Do they not lie with the other uncircumcised warriors who have fallen, who went down to the grave with their weapons of war, whose swords were placed under their heads? The punishment for their sins rested on their bones, though the terror of these warriors had stalked through the land of the living.

32:28 "You too, O Pharaoh, will be broken and will lie among the uncircumcised, with those killed by the sword.

32:29 "Edom is there, her kings and all her princes; despite their power, they are laid with those killed by the sword. They lie with the uncircumcised, with those who go down to the pit.

32:30 "All the princes of the north and all the Sidonians are there; they went down with the slain in disgrace despite the terror caused by their power. They lie uncircumcised with those killed by the sword and bear their shame with those who go down to the pit.

32:31 "Pharaoh--he and all his army--will see them and he will be consoled for all his hordes that were killed by the sword, declares the Sovereign LORD.

32:32 Although I had him spread terror in the land of the living, Pharaoh and all his hordes will be laid among the uncircumcised, with those killed by the sword, declares the Sovereign LORD."

Psalms 80.

80:1 Hear us, O Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock; you who sit enthroned between the cherubim, shine forth

80:2 before Ephraim, Benjamin and Manasseh. Awaken your might; come and save us.

80:3 Restore us, O God; make your face shine upon us, that we may be saved.

80:4 O LORD God Almighty, how long will your anger smolder against the prayers of your people?

80:5 You have fed them with the bread of tears; you have made them drink tears by the bowlful.

80:6 You have made us a source of contention to our neighbors, and our enemies mock us.

80:7 Restore us, O God Almighty; make your face shine upon us, that we may be saved.

80:8 You brought a vine out of Egypt; you drove out the nations and planted it.

80:9 You cleared the ground for it, and it took root and filled the land.

80:10 The mountains were covered with its shade, the mighty cedars with its branches.

80:11 It sent out its boughs to the Sea, its shoots as far as the River.

80:12 Why have you broken down its walls so that all who pass by pick its grapes?

80:13 Boars from the forest ravage it and the creatures of the field feed on it.

80:14 Return to us, O God Almighty! Look down from heaven and see! Watch over this vine,

80:15 the root your right hand has planted, the son you have raised up for yourself.

80:16 Your vine is cut down, it is burned with fire; at your rebuke your people perish.

80:17 Let your hand rest on the man at your right hand, the son of man you have raised up for yourself.

80:18 Then we will not turn away from you; revive us, and we will call on your name.

80:19 Restore us, O LORD God Almighty; make your face shine upon us, that we may be saved.
