열왕기상 19 장.

왕상19:1 아합이 엘리야가 행한 모든 일과 그가 어떻게 모든 선지자를 칼로 죽였는지를 이세벨에게 말하니

왕상19:2 이세벨이 사신을 엘리야에게 보내어 이르되 내가 내일 이맘때에는 반드시 네 생명을 저 사람들 중 한 사람의 생명과 같게 하리라 그렇게 하지 아니하면 신들이 내게 벌 위에 벌을 내림이 마땅하니라 한지라

왕상19:3 그가 이 형편을 보고 일어나 자기의 생명을 위해 도망하여 유다에 속한 브엘세바에 이르러 자기의 사환을 그 곳에 머물게 하고

왕상19:4 자기 자신은 광야로 들어가 하룻길쯤 가서 한 로뎀 나무 아래에 앉아서 자기가 죽기를 원하여 이르되 여호와여 넉넉하오니 지금 내 생명을 거두시옵소서 나는 내 조상들보다 낫지 못하나이다 하고

왕상19:5 로뎀 나무 아래에 누워 자더니 천사가 그를 어루만지며 그에게 이르되 일어나서 먹으라 하는지라

왕상19:6 본즉 머리맡에 숯불에 구운 떡과 한 병 물이 있더라 이에 먹고 마시고 다시 누웠더니

왕상19:7 여호와의 천사가 또 다시 와서 어루만지며 이르되 일어나 먹으라 네가 갈 길을 다 가지 못할까 하노라 하는지라

왕상19:8 이에 일어나 먹고 마시고 그 음식물의 힘을 의지하여 사십 주 사십 야를 가서 하나님의 산 호렙에 이르니라

왕상19:9 엘리야가 그 곳 굴에 들어가 거기서 머물더니 여호와의 말씀이 그에게 임하여 이르시되 엘리야야 네가 어찌하여 여기 있느냐

왕상19:10 그가 대답하되 내가 만군의 하나님 여호와께 열심이 유별하오니 이는 이스라엘 자손이 주의 언약을 버리고 주의 제단을 헐며 칼로 주의 선지자들을 죽였음이오며 오직 나만 남았거늘 그들이 내 생명을 찾아 빼앗으려 하나이다

왕상19:11 여호와께서 이르시되 너는 나가서 여호와 앞에서 산에 서라 하시더니 여호와께서 지나가시는데 여호와 앞에 크고 강한 바람이 산을 가르고 바위를 부수나 바람 가운데에 여호와께서 계시지 아니하며 바람 후에 지진이 있으나 지진 가운데에도 여호와께서 계시지 아니하며

왕상19:12 또 지진 후에 불이 있으나 불 가운데에도 여호와께서 계시지 아니하더니 불 후에 세미한 소리가 있는지라

왕상19:13 엘리야가 듣고 겉옷으로 얼굴을 가리고 나가 굴 어귀에 서매 소리가 그에게 임하여 이르시되 엘리야야 네가 어찌하여 여기 있느냐

왕상19:14 그가 대답하되 내가 만군의 하나님 여호와께 열심이 유별하오니 이는 이스라엘 자손이 주의 언약을 버리고 주의 제단을 헐며 칼로 주의 선지자들을 죽였음이오며 오직 나만 남았거늘 그들이 내 생명을 찾아 빼앗으려 하나이다

왕상19:15 여호와께서 그에게 이르시되 너는 네 길을 돌이켜 광야를 통하여 다메섹에 가서 이르거든 하사엘에게 기름을 부어 아람의 왕이 되게 하고

왕상19:16 너는 또 님시의 아들 예후에게 기름을 부어 이스라엘의 왕이 되게 하고 또 아벨므홀라 사밧의 아들 엘리사에게 기름을 부어 너를 대신하여 선지자가 되게 하라

왕상19:17 하사엘의 칼을 피하는 자를 예후가 죽일 것이요 예후의 칼을 피하는 자를 엘리사가 죽이리라

왕상19:18 그러나 내가 이스라엘 가운데에 칠천 명을 남기리니 다 바알에게 무릎을 꿇지 아니하고 다 바알에게 입맞추지 아니한 자니라

왕상19:19 엘리야가 거기서 떠나 사밧의 아들 엘리사를 만나니 그가 열두 겨릿소를 앞세우고 밭을 가는데 자기는 열두째 겨릿소와 함께 있더라 엘리야가 그리로 건너가서 겉옷을 그의 위에 던졌더니

왕상19:20 그가 소를 버리고 엘리야에게로 달려가서 이르되 청하건대 나를 내 부모와 입맞추게 하소서 그리한 후에 내가 당신을 따르리이다 엘리야가 그에게 이르되 돌아가라 내가 네게 어떻게 행하였느냐 하니라

왕상19:21 엘리사가 그를 떠나 돌아가서 한 겨릿소를 가져다가 잡고 소의 기구를 불살라 그 고기를 삶아 백성에게 주어 먹게 하고 일어나 엘리야를 따르며 수종 들었더라

데살로니가전서 2 장.

살전2:1 형제들아 우리가 너희 가운데 들어간 것이 헛되지 않은 줄을 너희가 친히 아나니

살전2:2 너희가 아는 바와 같이 우리가 빌립보에서 고난과 능욕을 당하였으나 우리 하나님을 힘입어 많은 싸움 중에 하나님의 복음을 너희에게 전하였노라

살전2:3 우리의 권면은 간사함이나 부정에서 난 것이 아니요 속임수로 하는 것도 아니라

살전2:4 오직 하나님께 옳게 여기심을 입어 복음을 위탁 받았으니 우리가 이와 같이 말함은 사람을 기쁘게 하려 함이 아니요 오직 우리 마음을 감찰하시는 하나님을 기쁘시게 하려 함이라

살전2:5 너희도 알거니와 우리가 아무 때에도 아첨하는 말이나 탐심의 탈을 쓰지 아니한 것을 하나님이 증언하시느니라

살전2:6 또한 우리는 너희에게서든지 다른 이에게서든지 사람에게서는 영광을 구하지 아니하였노라

살전2:7 우리는 그리스도의 사도로서 마땅히 권위를 주장할 수 있으나 도리어 너희 가운데서 유순한 자가 되어 유모가 자기 자녀를 기름과 같이 하였으니

살전2:8 우리가 이같이 너희를 사모하여 하나님의 복음뿐 아니라 우리의 목숨까지도 너희에게 주기를 기뻐함은 너희가 우리의 사랑하는 자 됨이라

살전2:9 형제들아 우리의 수고와 애쓴 것을 너희가 기억하리니 너희 아무에게도 폐를 끼치지 아니하려고 밤낮으로 일하면서 너희에게 하나님의 복음을 전하였노라

살전2:10 우리가 너희 믿는 자들을 향하여 어떻게 거룩하고 옳고 흠 없이 행하였는지에 대하여 너희가 증인이요 하나님도 그러하시도다

살전2:11 너희도 아는 바와 같이 우리가 너희 각 사람에게 아버지가 자기 자녀에게 하듯 권면하고 위로하고 경계하노니

살전2:12 이는 너희를 부르사 자기 나라와 영광에 이르게 하시는 하나님께 합당히 행하게 하려 함이라

살전2:13 이러므로 우리가 하나님께 끊임없이 감사함은 너희가 우리에게 들은 바 하나님의 말씀을 받을 때에 사람의 말로 받지 아니하고 하나님의 말씀으로 받음이니 진실로 그러하도다 이 말씀이 또한 너희 믿는 자 가운데에서 역사하느니라

살전2:14 형제들아 너희가 그리스도 예수 안에서 유대에 있는 하나님의 교회들을 본받은 자 되었으니 그들이 유대인에게 고난을 받음과 같이 너희도 너희 동족에게서 동일한 고난을 받았느니라

살전2:15 유대인은 주 예수와 선지자들을 죽이고 우리를 쫓아내고 하나님을 기쁘시게 하지 아니하고 모든 사람에게 대적이 되어

살전2:16 우리가 이방인에게 말하여 구원 받게 함을 그들이 금하여 자기 죄를 항상 채우매 노하심이 끝까지 그들에게 임하였느니라

살전2:17 형제들아 우리가 잠시 너희를 떠난 것은 얼굴이요 마음은 아니니 너희 얼굴 보기를 열정으로 더욱 힘썼노라

살전2:18 그러므로 나 바울은 한번 두 번 너희에게 가고자 하였으나 사탄이 우리를 막았도다

살전2:19 우리의 소망이나 기쁨이나 자랑의 면류관이 무엇이냐 그가 강림하실 때 우리 주 예수 앞에 너희가 아니냐

살전2:20 너희는 우리의 영광이요 기쁨이라

다니엘 1 장.

단1:1 유다 왕 여호야김이 다스린지 삼 년이 되는 해에 바벨론 왕 느부갓네살이 예루살렘에 이 르러 성을 에워쌌더니

단1:2 주께서 유다 왕 여호야김과 하나님의 전 그릇 얼마를 그의 손에 넘기시매 그가 그것을 가지고 시날 땅 자기 신들의 신전에 가져다가 그 신들의 보물 창고에 두었더라

단1:3 왕이 환관장 아스부나스에게 말하여 이스라엘 자손 중에서 왕족과 귀족 몇 사람

단1:4 곧 흠이 없고 용모가 아름다우며 모든 지혜를 통찰하며 지식에 통달하며 학문에 익숙하여 왕궁에 설 만한 소년을 데려오게 하였고 그들에게 갈대아 사람의 학문과 언어를 가르치게 하였고

단1:5 또 왕이 지정하여 그들에게 왕의 음식과 그가 마시는 포도주에서 날마다 쓸 것을 주어 삼 년을 기르게 하였으니 그 후에 그들은 왕 앞에 서게 될 것이더라

단1:6 그들 가운데는 유다 자손 곧 다니엘과 하나냐와 미사엘과 아사랴가 있었더니

단1:7 환관장이 그들의 이름을 고쳐 다니엘은 벨드사살이라 하고 하나냐는 사드락이라 하고 미사엘은 메삭이라 하고 아사랴는 아벳느고라 하였더라

단1:8 다니엘은 뜻을 정하여 왕의 음식과 그가 마시는 포도주로 자기를 더럽히지 아니하리라 하고 자기를 더럽히지 아니하도록 환관장에게 구하니

단1:9 하나님이 다니엘로 하여금 환관장에게 은혜와 긍휼을 얻게 하신지라

단1:10 환관장이 다니엘에게 이르되 내가 내 주 왕을 두려워하노라 그가 너희 먹을 것과 너희 마실 것을 지정하셨거늘 너희의 얼굴이 초췌하여 같은 또래의 소년들만 못한 것을 그가 보게 할 것이 무엇이냐 그렇게 되면 너희 때문에 내 머리가 왕 앞에서 위태롭게 되리라 하니라

단1:11 환관장이 다니엘과 하나냐와 미사엘과 아사랴를 감독하게 한 자에게 다니엘이 말하되

단1:12 청하오니 당신의 종들을 열흘 동안 시험하여 채식을 주어 먹게 하고 물을 주어 마시게 한 후에

단1:13 당신 앞에서 우리의 얼굴과 왕의 음식을 먹는 소년들의 얼굴을 비교하여 보아서 당신이 보는 대로 종들에게 행하소서 하매

단1:14 그가 그들의 말을 따라 열흘 동안 시험하더니

단1:15 열흘 후에 그들의 얼굴이 더욱 아름답고 살이 더욱 윤택하여 왕의 음식을 먹는 다른 소년들보다 더 좋아 보인지라

단1:16 그리하여 감독하는 자가 그들에게 지정된 음식과 마실 포도주를 제하고 채식을 주니라

단1:17 하나님이 이 네 소년에게 학문을 주시고 모든 서적을 깨닫게 하시고 지혜를 주셨으니 다 니엘은 또 모든 환상과 꿈을 깨달아 알더라

단1:18 왕이 말한 대로 그들을 불러들일 기한이 찼으므로 환관장이 그들을 느부갓네살 앞으로 데리고 가니

단1:19 왕이 그들과 말하여 보매 무리 중에 다니엘과 하나냐와 미사엘과 아사랴와 같은 자가 없으므로 그들을 왕 앞에 서게 하고

단1:20 왕이 그들에게 모든 일을 묻는 중에 그 지혜와 총명이 온 나라 박수와 술객보다 십 배나 나은 줄을 아니라

단1:21 다니엘은 고레스 왕 원년까지 있으니라

시편 105 장.

시105:1 여호와께 감사하고 그의 이름을 불러 아뢰며 그가 하는 일을 만민 중에 알게 할지어다

시105:2 그에게 노래하며 그를 찬양하며 그의 모든 기이한 일들을 말할지어다

시105:3 그의 거룩한 이름을 자랑하라 여호와를 구하는 자들은 마음이 즐거울지로다

시105:4 여호와와 그의 능력을 구할지어다 그의 얼굴을 항상 구할지어다

시105:5 그의 종 아브라함의 후손 곧 택하신 야곱의 자손 너희는 그가 행하신 기적과

시105:6 그의 이적과 그의 입의 판단을 기억할지어다

시105:7 그는 여호와 우리 하나님이시라 그의 판단이 온 땅에 있도다

시105:8 그는 그의 언약 곧 천 대에 걸쳐 명령하신 말씀을 영원히 기억하셨으니

시105:9 이것은 아브라함과 맺은 언약이고 이삭에게 하신 맹세이며

시105:10 야곱에게 세우신 율례 곧 이스라엘에게 하신 영원한 언약이라

시105:11 이르시기를 내가 가나안 땅을 네게 주어 너희에게 할당된 소유가 되게 하리라 하셨도다

시105:12 그 때에 그들의 사람 수가 적어 그 땅의 나그네가 되었고

시105:13 이 족속에게서 저 족속에게로, 이 나라에서 다른 민족에게로 떠돌아다녔도다

시105:14 그러나 그는 사람이 그들을 억압하는 것을 용납하지 아니하시고 그들로 말미암아 왕들을 꾸짖어

시105:15 이르시기를 나의 기름 부은 자를 손대지 말며 나의 선지자들을 해하지 말라 하셨도다

시105:16 그가 또 그 땅에 기근이 들게 하사 그들이 의지하고 있는 양식을 다 끊으셨도다

시105:17 그가 한 사람을 앞서 보내셨음이여 요셉이 종으로 팔렸도다

시105:18 그의 발은 차꼬를 차고 그의 몸은 쇠사슬에 매였으니

시105:19 곧 여호와의 말씀이 응할 때까지라 그의 말씀이 그를 단련하였도다

시105:20 왕이 사람을 보내어 그를 석방함이여 뭇 백성의 통치자가 그를 자유롭게 하였도다

시105:21 그를 그의 집의 주관자로 삼아 그의 모든 소유를 관리하게 하고

시105:22 그의 뜻대로 모든 신하를 다스리며 그의 지혜로 장로들을 교훈하게 하였도다

시105:23 이에 이스라엘이 애굽에 들어감이여 야곱이 함의 땅에 나그네가 되었도다

시105:24 여호와께서 자기의 백성을 크게 번성하게 하사 그의 대적들보다 강하게 하셨으며

시105:25 또 그 대적들의 마음이 변하게 하여 그의 백성을 미워하게 하시며 그의 종들에게 교활하게 행하게 하셨도다

시105:26 그리하여 그는 그의 종 모세와 그의 택하신 아론을 보내시니

시105:27 그들이 그들의 백성 중에서 여호와의 표적을 보이고 함의 땅에서 징조들을 행하였도다

시105:28 여호와께서 흑암을 보내사 그곳을 어둡게 하셨으나 그들은 그의 말씀을 지키지 아니하셨도다

시105:29 그들의 물도 변하여 피가 되게 하사 그들의 물고기를 죽이셨도다

시105:30 그 땅에 개구리가 많아져서 왕의 궁실에도 있었도다

시105:31 여호와께서 말씀하신즉 파리 떼가 오며 그들의 온 영토에 이가 생겼도다

시105:32 비 대신 우박을 내리시며 그들의 땅에 화염을 내리셨도다

시105:33 그들의 포도나무와 무화과나무를 치시며 그들의 지경에 있는 나무를 찍으셨도다

시105:34 여호와께서 말씀하신즉 황충과 수많은 메뚜기가 몰려와

시105:35 그들의 땅에 있는 모든 채소를 먹으며 그들의 밭에 있는 열매를 먹었도다

시105:36 또 여호와께서 그들의 기력의 시작인 그 땅의 모든 장자를 치셨도다

시105:37 마침내 그들을 인도하여 은 금을 가지고 나오게 하시니 그의 지파 중에 비틀거리는 자가 하나도 없었도다

시105:38 그들이 떠날 때에 애굽이 기뻐하였으니 그들이 그들을 두려워함이로다

시105:39 여호와께서 낮에는 구름을 펴사 덮개를 삼으시고 밤에는 불로 밝히셨으며

시105:40 그들이 구한즉 메추라기를 가져오시고 또 하늘의 양식으로 그들을 만족하게 하셨도다

시105:41 반석을 여신즉 물이 흘러나와 마른 땅에 강 같이 흘렀으니

시105:42 이는 그의 거룩한 말씀과 그의 종 아브라함을 기억하셨음이로다

시105:43 그의 백성이 즐겁게 나오게 하시며 그의 택한 자는 노래하며 나오게 하시며

시105:44 여러 나라의 땅을 그들에게 주시며 민족들이 수고한 것을 소유로 가지게 하셨으니

시105:45 이는 그들이 그의 율례를 지키고 그의 율법을 따르게 하려 하심이로다 할렐루야

1 Kings 19.

19:1 Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.

19:2 So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, "May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them."

19:3 Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there,

19:4 while he himself went a day's journey into the desert. He came to a broom tree, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. "I have had enough, LORD," he said. "Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors."

19:5 Then he lay down under the tree and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, "Get up and eat."

19:6 He looked around, and there by his head was a cake of bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.

19:7 The angel of the LORD came back a second time and touched him and said, "Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you."

19:8 So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.

19:9 There he went into a cave and spent the night. And the word of the LORD came to him: "What are you doing here, Elijah?"

19:10 He replied, "I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, broken down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too."

19:11 The LORD said, "Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by." Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake.

19:12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.

19:13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"

19:14 He replied, "I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, broken down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too."

19:15 The LORD said to him, "Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram.

19:16 Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet.

19:17 Jehu will put to death any who escape the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu.

19:18 Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel--all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and all whose mouths have not kissed him."

19:19 So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him.

19:20 Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah. "Let me kiss my father and mother good-by," he said, "and then I will come with you." "Go back," Elijah replied. "What have I done to you?"

19:21 So Elisha left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He burned the plowing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his attendant.

1 Thessalonians 2.

2:1 You know, brothers, that our visit to you was not a failure.

2:2 We had previously suffered and been insulted in Philippi, as you know, but with the help of our God we dared to tell you his gospel in spite of strong opposition.

2:3 For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives, nor are we trying to trick you.

2:4 On the contrary, we speak as men approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please men but God, who tests our hearts.

2:5 You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed--God is our witness.

2:6 We were not looking for praise from men, not from you or anyone else. As apostles of Christ we could have been a burden to you,

2:7 but we were gentle among you, like a mother caring for her little children.

2:8 We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well, because you had become so dear to us.

2:9 Surely you remember, brothers, our toil and hardship; we worked night and day in order not to be a burden to anyone while we preached the gospel of God to you.

2:10 You are witnesses, and so is God, of how holy, righteous and blameless we were among you who believed.

2:11 For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children,

2:12 encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory.

2:13 And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe.

2:14 For you, brothers, became imitators of God's churches in Judea, which are in Christ Jesus: You suffered from your own countrymen the same things those churches suffered from the Jews,

2:15 who killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets and also drove us out. They displease God and are hostile to all men

2:16 in their effort to keep us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved. In this way they always heap up their sins to the limit. The wrath of God has come upon them at last.

2:17 But, brothers, when we were torn away from you for a short time (in person, not in thought), out of our intense longing we made every effort to see you.

2:18 For we wanted to come to you--certainly I, Paul, did, again and again--but Satan stopped us.

2:19 For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you?

2:20 Indeed, you are our glory and joy.

Daniel 1.

1:1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.

1:2 And the Lord delivered Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, along with some of the articles from the temple of God. These he carried off to the temple of his god in Babylonia and put in the treasure house of his god.

1:3 Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, chief of his court officials, to bring in some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility--

1:4 young men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king's palace. He was to teach them the language and literature of the Babylonians.

1:5 The king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine from the king's table. They were to be trained for three years, and after that they were to enter the king's service.

1:6 Among these were some from Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.

1:7 The chief official gave them new names: to Daniel, the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego.

1:8 But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way.

1:9 Now God had caused the official to show favor and sympathy to Daniel,

1:10 but the official told Daniel, "I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your food and drink. Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you."

1:11 Daniel then said to the guard whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah,

1:12 "Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink.

1:13 Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see."

1:14 So he agreed to this and tested them for ten days.

1:15 At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food.

1:16 So the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables instead.

1:17 To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds.

1:18 At the end of the time set by the king to bring them in, the chief official presented them to Nebuchadnezzar.

1:19 The king talked with them, and he found none equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah; so they entered the king's service.

1:20 In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom.

1:21 And Daniel remained there until the first year of King Cyrus.

Psalms 105.

105:1 Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done.

105:2 Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts.

105:3 Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice.

105:4 Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always.

105:5 Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced,

105:6 O descendants of Abraham his servant, O sons of Jacob, his chosen ones.

105:7 He is the LORD our God; his judgments are in all the earth.

105:8 He remembers his covenant forever, the word he commanded, for a thousand generations,

105:9 the covenant he made with Abraham, the oath he swore to Isaac.

105:10 He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as an everlasting covenant:

105:11 "To you I will give the land of Canaan as the portion you will inherit."

105:12 When they were but few in number, few indeed, and strangers in it,

105:13 they wandered from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another.

105:14 He allowed no one to oppress them; for their sake he rebuked kings:

105:15 "Do not touch my anointed ones; do my prophets no harm."

105:16 He called down famine on the land and destroyed all their supplies of food;

105:17 and he sent a man before them--Joseph, sold as a slave.

105:18 They bruised his feet with shackles, his neck was put in irons,

105:19 till what he foretold came to pass, till the word of the LORD proved him true.

105:20 The king sent and released him, the ruler of peoples set him free.

105:21 He made him master of his household, ruler over all he possessed,

105:22 to instruct his princes as he pleased and teach his elders wisdom.

105:23 Then Israel entered Egypt; Jacob lived as an alien in the land of Ham.

105:24 The LORD made his people very fruitful; he made them too numerous for their foes,

105:25 whose hearts he turned to hate his people, to conspire against his servants.

105:26 He sent Moses his servant, and Aaron, whom he had chosen.

105:27 They performed his miraculous signs among them, his wonders in the land of Ham.

105:28 He sent darkness and made the land dark--for had they not rebelled against his words?

105:29 He turned their waters into blood, causing their fish to die.

105:30 Their land teemed with frogs, which went up into the bedrooms of their rulers.

105:31 He spoke, and there came swarms of flies, and gnats throughout their country.

105:32 He turned their rain into hail, with lightning throughout their land;

105:33 he struck down their vines and fig trees and shattered the trees of their country.

105:34 He spoke, and the locusts came, grasshoppers without number;

105:35 they ate up every green thing in their land, ate up the produce of their soil.

105:36 Then he struck down all the firstborn in their land, the firstfruits of all their manhood.

105:37 He brought out Israel, laden with silver and gold, and from among their tribes no one faltered.

105:38 Egypt was glad when they left, because dread of Israel had fallen on them.

105:39 He spread out a cloud as a covering, and a fire to give light at night.

105:40 They asked, and he brought them quail and satisfied them with the bread of heaven.

105:41 He opened the rock, and water gushed out; like a river it flowed in the desert.

105:42 For he remembered his holy promise given to his servant Abraham.

105:43 He brought out his people with rejoicing, his chosen ones with shouts of joy;

105:44 he gave them the lands of the nations, and they fell heir to what others had toiled for--

105:45 that they might keep his precepts and observe his laws. Praise the LORD.
