열왕기상 20 장.

왕상20:1 아람의 벤하닷 왕이 그의 군대를 다 모으니 왕 삼십이 명이 그와 함께 있고 또 말과 병거들이 있더라 이에 올라가서 사마리아를 에워싸고 그 곳을 치며

왕상20:2 사자들을 성 안에 있는 이스라엘의 아합 왕에게 보내 이르기를 벤하닷이 그에게 이르되

왕상20:3 네 은금은 내 것이요 네 아내들과 네 자녀들의 아름다운 자도 내 것이니라 하매

왕상20:4 이스라엘의 왕이 대답하여 말하기를 내 주 왕이여 왕의 말씀 같이 나와 내 것은 다 왕의 것이니이다 하였더니

왕상20:5 사신들이 다시 와서 이르되 벤하닷이 이르노라 내가 이미 네게 사람을 보내어 말하기를 너는 네 은금과 아내들과 자녀들을 내게 넘기라 하였거니와

왕상20:6 내일 이맘때에 내가 내 신하들을 네게 보내리니 그들이 네 집과 네 신하들의 집을 수색하여 네 눈이 기뻐하는 것을 그들의 손으로 잡아 가져가리라 한지라

왕상20:7 이에 이스라엘 왕이 나라의 장로를 다 불러 이르되 너희는 이 사람이 악을 도모하고 있는 줄을 자세히 알라 그가 내 아내들과 내 자녀들과 내 은금을 빼앗으려고 사람을 내게 보냈으나 내가 거절하지 못하였노라

왕상20:8 모든 장로와 백성들이 다 왕께 아뢰되 왕은 듣지도 말고 허락하지도 마옵소서 한지라

왕상20:9 그러므로 왕이 벤하닷의 사신들에게 이르되 너희는 내 주 왕께 말하기를 왕이 처음에 보내 종에게 구하신 것은 내가 다 그대로 하려니와 이것은 내가 할 수 없나이다 하라 하니 사자들이 돌아가서 보고하니라

왕상20:10 그 때에 벤하닷이 다시 그에게 사람을 보내어 이르되 사마리아의 부스러진 것이 나를 따르는 백성의 무리의 손에 채우기에 족할 것 같으면 신들이 내게 벌 위에 벌을 내림이 마땅하니라 하매

왕상20:11 이스라엘 왕이 대답하여 이르되 갑옷 입는 자가 갑옷 벗는 자 같이 자랑하지 못할 것이라 하라 하니라

왕상20:12 그 때에 벤하닷이 왕들과 장막에서 마시다가 이 말을 듣고 그의 신하들에게 이르되 너희는 진영을 치라 하매 곧 성읍을 향하여 진영을 치니라

왕상20:13 한 선지자가 이스라엘의 아합 왕에게 나아가서 이르되 여호와의 말씀이 네가 이 큰 무리를 보느냐 내가 오늘 그들을 네 손에 넘기리니 너는 내가 여호와인 줄을 알리라 하셨나이다

왕상20:14 아합이 이르되 누구를 통하여 그렇게 하시리이까 대답하되 여호와의 말씀이 각 지방 고관의 청년들로 하리라 하셨나이다 아합이 이르되 누가 싸움을 시작하리이까 대답하되 왕이니이다

왕상20:15 아합이 이에 각 지방 고관의 청년들을 계수하니 이백삼십이 명이요 그 외에 모든 백성 곧 이스라엘의 모든 자손을 계수하니 칠 천 명이더라

왕상20:16 그들이 정오에 나가니 벤하닷은 장막에서 돕는 왕 삼십이 명과 더불어 마시고 취한 중이라

왕상20:17 각 지방의 고관의 청년들이 먼저 나갔더라 벤하닷이 정탐꾼을 보냈더니 그들이 보고하여 이르되 사마리아에서 사람들이 나오더이다 하매

왕상20:18 그가 이르되 화친하러 나올지라도 사로잡고 싸우러 나올지라도 사로잡으라 하니라

왕상20:19 각 지방 고관의 청년들과 그들을 따르는 군대가 성읍에서 나가서

왕상20:20 각각 적군을 쳐죽이매 아람 사람이 도망하는지라 이스라엘이 쫓으니 아람 왕 벤하닷이 말을 타고 마병과 더불어 도망하여 피하니라

왕상20:21 이스라엘 왕이 나가서 말과 병거를 치고 또 아람 사람을 쳐서 크게 이겼더라

왕상20:22 그 선지자가 이스라엘 왕에게 나아와 이르되 왕은 가서 힘을 기르고 왕께서 행할 일을 알고 준비하소서 해가 바뀌면 아람 왕이 왕을 치러 오리이다 하니라

왕상20:23 아람 왕의 신하들이 왕께 아뢰되 그들의 신은 산의 신이므로 그들이 우리보다 강하였거니와 우리가 만일 평지에서 그들과 싸우면 반드시 그들보다 강할지라

왕상20:24 또 왕은 이 일을 행하실지니 곧 왕들을 제하여 각각 그 곳에서 떠나게 하고 그들 대신에 총독들을 두시고

왕상20:25 또 왕의 잃어버린 군대와 같은 군대를 왕을 위하여 보충하고 말은 말대로, 병거는 병거대로 보충하고 우리가 평지에서 그들과 싸우면 반드시 그들보다 강하리이다 왕이 그 말을 듣고 그리하니라

왕상20:26 해가 바뀌니 벤하닷이 아람 사람을 소집하고 아벡으로 올라와서 이스라엘과 싸우려 하매

왕상20:27 이스라엘 자손도 소집되어 군량을 받고 마주 나가서 그들 앞에 진영을 치니 이스라엘 자손은 두 무리의 적은 염소 Ep와 같고 아람 사람은 그 땅에 가득하였더라

왕상20:28 그 때에 하나님의 사람이 이스라엘 왕에게 나아와 말하여 이르되 여호와의 말씀에 아람 사람이 말하기를 여호와는 산의 신이요 골짜기의 신은 아니라 하는도다 그러므로 내가 이 큰 군대를 다 네 손에 넘기리니 너희는 내가 여호와인 줄을 알리라 하셨나이다 하니라

왕상20:29 진영이 서로 대치한 지 칠 일이라 일곱째 날에 접전하여 이스라엘 자손이 하루에 아람 보병 십만 명을 죽이매

왕상20:30 그 남은 자는 아벡으로 도망하여 성읍으로 들어갔더니 그 성벽이 그 남은 자 이만 칠천 명 위에 무너지고 벤하닷은 도망하여 성읍에 이르러 골방으로 들어가니라

왕상20:31 그의 신하들이 그에게 말하되 우리가 들은즉 이스라엘 집의 왕들은 인자한 왕이라 하니 만일 우리가 굵은 베로 허리를 동이고 테두리를 머리에 쓰고 이스라엘의 왕에게로 나아가면 그가 혹시 왕의 생명을 살리리이다 하고

왕상20:32 그들이 굵은 베로 허리를 동이고 테두리를 머리에 쓰고 이스라엘의 왕에게 이르러 이르되 왕의 종 벤하닷이 청하기를 내 생명을 살려 주옵소서 하더이다 아합이 이르되 그가 아직도 살아 있느냐 그는 내 형제이니라

왕상20:33 그 사람들이 좋은 징조로 여기고 그 말을 얼른 받아 대답하여 이르되 벤하닷은 왕의 형제니이다 왕이 이르되 너희는 가서 그를 인도하여 오라 벤하닷이 이에 왕에게 나아오니 왕이 그를 병거에 올린지라

왕상20:34 벤하닷이 왕께 아뢰되 내 아버지께서 당신의 아버지에게서 빼앗은 모든 성읍을 내가 돌려보내리이다 또 내 아버지께서 사마리아에서 만든 것 같이 당신도 다메섹에서 당신을 위하여 거리를 만드소서 아합이 이르되 내가 이 조약으로 인해 당신을 놓으리라 하고 이에 더불어 조약을 맺고 그를 놓았더라

왕상20:35 선지자의 무리 중 한 사람이 여호와의 말씀을 그의 친구에게 이르되 너는 나를 치라 하였더니 그 사람이 치기를 싫어하는지라

왕상20:36 그가 그 사람에게 이르되 네가 여호와의 말씀을 듣지 아니하였으니 네가 나를 떠나갈 때에 사자가 너를 죽이리라 그 사람이 그의 곁을 떠나가더니 사자가 그를 만나 죽였더라

왕상20:37 그가 또 다른 사람을 만나 이르되 너는 나를 치라 하매 그 사람이 그를 치되 상하도록 친지라

왕상20:38 선지자가 가서 수건으로 자기의 눈을 가리어 변장하고 길가에서 왕을 기다리다가

왕상20:39 왕이 지나갈 때에 그가 소리 질러 왕을 불러 이르되 종이 전장 가운데에 나갔더니 한 사람이 돌이켜 어떤 사람을 끌고 내게로 와서 말하기를 이 사람을 지키라 만일 그를 잃어버리면 네 생명으로 그의 생명을 대신하거나 그렇지 아니하면 네가 은한 달란트를 내어야 하리라 하였거늘

왕상20:40 종이 이리 저리 일을 볼 동안에 그가 없어졌나이다 이스라엘 왕이 그에게 이르되 네가 스스로 결정하였으니 그대로 당하여야 하리라

왕상20:41 그가 급히 자기의 눈을 가린 수건을 벗으니 이스라엘 왕이 그는 선지자 중의 한 사람인 줄을 알아본지라

왕상20:42 그가 왕께 아뢰되 여호와의 말씀이 내가 멸하기로 작정한 사람을 네 손으로 놓았은즉 네 목숨은 그의 목숨을 대신하고 네 백성은 그의 백성을 대신하리라 하셨나이다

왕상20:43 이스라엘 왕이 근심하고 답답하여 그의 왕궁으로 돌아가려고 사마리아에 이르니라

데살로니가전서 3 장.

살전3:1 이러므로 우리가 참다 못하여 우리만 아덴에 머물기를 좋게 생각하고

살전3:2 우리 형제 곧 그리스도의 복음을 전하는 하나님의 일꾼인 디모데를 보내노니 이는 너희를 굳건하게 하고 너희 믿음에 대하여 위로함으로

살전3:3 아무도 이 여러 환난 중에 흔들리지 않게 하려 함이라 우리가 이것을 위하여 세움 받은 줄을 너희가 친히 알리라

살전3:4 우리가 너희와 함께 있을 때에 장차 받을 환난을 너희에게 미리 말하였는데 과연 그렇게 된 것을 너희가 아느니라

살전3:5 이러므로 나도 참다 못하여 너희 믿음을 알기 위하여 그를 보내었노니 이는 혹 시험하여 우리 수고를 헛되게 할 까 함이니

살전3:6 지금은 디모데가 너희에게로부터 와서 너희 믿음과 사랑의 기쁜 소식을 우리에게 전하고 또 너희가 항상 우리를 잘 생각하여 우리가 너희를 간절히 보고자 함과 같이 너희도 우리를 간절히 보고자 한다 하니

살전3:7 이러므로 형제들아 우리가 모든 궁핍과 환난 가운데서 너희 믿음으로 말미암아 너희에게 위로를 받았노라

살전3:8 그러므로 너희가 주 안에 굳게 선즉 우리가 이제는 살리라

살전3:9 우리가 우리 하나님 앞에서 너희로 말미암아 모든 기쁨으로 기뻐하니 너희를 위하여 능히 어떠한 감사로 하나님께 보답할까

살전3:10 주야로 심히 간구함은 너희 얼굴을 보고 너희 믿음이 부족한 것을 보충하게 하려 함이라

살전3:11 하나님 우리 아버지와 우리 주 예수는 우리 길을 너희에게로 갈 수 있게 하시오며

살전3:12 또 주께서 우리가 너희를 사랑함과 같이 너희도 피차간과 모든 사람에 대한 가랑이 더욱 많아 넘치게 하사

살전3:13 너희 마음을 굳건하게 하시고 우리 주 예수께서 그의 모든 성도와 함께 강림하실 때에 하나님 우리 아버지 앞에서 거룩함에 흠이 없게 하시기를 원하노라

다니엘 2 장.

단2:1 느부갓네살이 다스린 지 이 년이 되는 해에 느부갓네살이 꿈을 꾸고 그로 말미암아 마음이 번민하여 잠을 이루지 못한지라

단2:2 왕이 그의 꿈을 자기에게 알려 주도록 박수와 술객과 점쟁이와 갈대아 술사를 부르라 말하매 그들이 들어가서 왕의 앞에 선지라

단2:3 왕이 그들에게 이르되 내가 꿈을 꾸고 그 꿈을 알고자 하여 마음이 번민하도다 하니

단2:4 갈대아 술사들이 아람 말로 왕에게 말하되 왕이여 만수무강하옵소서 왕께서 그 꿈을 종들에게 이르시면 우리가 해석하여 드리겠나이다 하는지라

단2:5 왕이 갈대아인들에게 대답하여 이르되 내가 명령을 내렸나니 너희가 만일 꿈과 그 해석을 내게 알게 하지 아니하면 너희 몸을 쪼갤 것이며 너희의 집을 거름더미로 만들 것이요

단2:6 너희가 만일 꿈과 그 해석을 보이면 너희가 선물과 상과 큰 영광을 내게서 얻으리라 그런즉 꿈과 그 해석을 내게 보이라 하니

단2:7 그들이 다시 대답하여 이르되 원하건대 왕은 꿈을 종들에게 이르소서 그리하시면 우리가 해석하여 드리겠나이다 하니

단2:8 왕이 대답하여 이르되 내가 분명히 아노라 너희가 나의 명령이 내렸음을 보았으므로 시간 을 지연하려 함이로다

단2:9 너희가 만일 이 꿈을 내게 알게 하지 아니하면 너희를 처치할 법이 오직 하나이니 이는 너희가 거짓말과 망령된 말을 내 앞에서 꾸며 말하여 때가 변하기를 기다리려 함이라 이제 그 꿈을 내게 알게 하라 그리하면 너희가 그 해석도 보일 줄을 내가 알리라 하더라

단2:10 갈대아인들이 왕 앞에 대답하여 이르되 세상에는 왕의 그 일을 보일 자가 한 사람도 없으므로 어떤 크고 권력 있는 왕이라도 이런 것으로 박수에게나 술객에게나 갈대아인들에게 물은 자가 없었나이다

단2:11 왕께서 물으신 것은 어려운 일이라 육체와 함께 살지 아니하는 신들 외에는 왕 앞에 그것을 보일 자가 없나이다 한지라

단2:12 왕이 이로 말미암아 진노하고 통분하여 바벨론의 모든 지혜자들을 다 죽이라 명령하니라

단2:13 왕의 명령이 내리매 지혜자들은 죽게 되었고 다니엘과 그의 친구들도 죽이려고 찾았더라

단2:14 그 때에 왕의 근위대장 아리옥이 바벨론 지혜자들을 죽이러 나가매 다니엘이 명철하고 슬기로운 말로

단2:15 왕의 근위대장 아리옥에게 물어 이르되 왕의 명령이 어찌 그리 급하냐 하니 아리옥이 그 일을 다니엘에게 알리매

단2:16 다니엘이 들어가서 왕께 구하기를 시간을 주시면 왕에게 그 해석을 알려 드리리이다 하니라

단2:17 이에 다니엘이 자기 집으로 돌아가서 그 친구 하나냐와 미사엘과 아사랴에게 그 일을 알 리고

단2:18 하늘에 계신 하나님이 이 은밀한 일에 대하여 불쌍히 여기사 다니엘과 친구들이 바벨론의 다른 지혜자들과 함께 죽임을 당하지 않게 하시기를 그들로 하여금 구하게 하니라

단2:19 이에 이 은밀한 것이 밤에 환상으로 다니엘에게 나타나 보이매 다니엘이 하늘에 계신 하나님을 찬송하니라

단2:20 다니엘이 말하여 이르되 영원부터 영원까지 하나님의 이름을 찬송할 것은 지혜와 능력이 그에게 있음이로다

단2:21 그는 때와 계절을 바꾸시며 왕들을 폐하시고 왕들을 세우시며 지혜자에게 지혜를 주시고 총명한자에게 지식을 주시는도다

단2:22 그는 깊고 은밀한 일을 나타내시고 어두운 데에 있는 것을 아시며 또 빛이 그와 함께 있도다

단2:23 나의 조상들의 하나님이여 주께서 이제 내게 지혜와 능력을 주시고 우리가 주께 구한 것을 내게 알게 하셨사오니 내가 주께 감사하고 주를 찬양하나이다 곧 주께서 왕의 그 일을 내게 보이셨나이다 하니라

단2:24 이에 다니엘은 왕이 바벨론 지혜자들을 죽이라 명령한 아리옥에게로 가서 그에게 이같이 이르되 바벨론 지혜자들을 죽이지 말고 나를 왕의 앞으로 인도하라 그리하면 내가 그 해석을 왕께 알려 드리리라 하니

단2:25 이에 아리옥이 디니엘을 데리고 급히 왕 앞에 들어가서 아뢰되 내가 사로잡혀 온 유다 자손 중에서 한 사람을 찾아내었나이다 그가 그 해석을 왕께 알려드리리이다 하니라

단2:26 왕이 대답하여 벨드사살이라 이름한 다니엘에게 이르되 내가 꾼 꿈과 그 해석을 네가 능히 내게 알게 하겠느냐 하니

단2:27 다니엘이 왕 앞에 대답하여 이르되 왕이 물으신 바 은밀한 것은 지혜자나 술객이나 박수나 점쟁이가 능히 왕께 보일 수 없으되

단2:28 오직 은밀한 것을 나타내실 이는 하늘에 계신 하나님이시라 그가 느부갓네살 왕에게 후일에 될 일을 알게 하셨나이다 왕의 꿈 곧 왕이 침상에서 머리 속으로 받은 환상은 이러하니이다

단2:29 왕이여 왕이 침상에서 장래 일을 생각하실 때에 은밀한 것을 나타내시는 이가 장래 일을 왕에게 알게 하셨사오며

단2:30 내게 이 은밀한 것을 나타내심은 내 지혜가 모든 사람보다 낫기 때문이 아니라 오직 그 해석을 왕에게 알려서 왕이 마음으로 생각하던 것을 왕에게 알려주려 하심이니이다

단2:31 왕이여 왕이 한 큰 신상을 보셨나이다 그 신상이 왕의 앞에 섰는데 크고 광채가 매우 찬란하며 그 모양이 심히 두려우니

단2:32 그 우상의 머리는 순금이요 가슴과 두 팔은 은이요 배와 넓적 다리는 놋이요

단2:33 그 종아리는 철이요 그 발은 얼마는 철이요 얼마는 진흙이었나이다

단2:34 또 왕이 보신즉 손대지 아니한 돌이 나와서 신상의 철과 진흙의 발을 쳐서 부서뜨리매

단2:35 그 때에 철과 진흙과 놋과 은과 금이 다 부서져 여름 타작 마당의 겨 같이 되어 바람에 불려 간 곳이 없었고 우상을 친 돌은 태산을 이루어 온 세계에 가득하였나이다

단2:36 그 꿈이 이러한즉 내가 이제 그 해석을 왕 앞에 아뢰리이다

단2:37 왕이여 왕은 여러 왕들 중의 왕이시라 하늘의 하나님이 나라와 권세와 능력과 영광을 왕에게 주셨고

단2:38 사람들과 들짐승과 공중의 새들, 어느 곳에 있는 것을 막론하고 그것들을 왕의 손에 넘기사 다 다스리게 하셨으니 왕은 곧 그 금 머리니이다

단2:39 왕을 뒤이어 왕보다 못한 다른 나라가 일어날 것이요 셋째로 또 놋 같은 나라가 일어나서 온 세계를 다스릴 것이며

단2:40 넷째 나라는 강하기가 쇠 같으리니 쇠는 모든 물건을 부서뜨리고 이기는 것이라 쇠가 모든 것을 부수는 것 같이 그 나라가 뭇 나라를 부서뜨리고 찧을 것이며

단2:41 왕께서 그 발과 발가락이 얼마는 토기장이의 진흙이요 얼마는 쇠인 것을 보셨은즉 그 나라가 나누일 것이며 왕께서 쇠와 진흙이 섞인 것을 보셨은즉 그 나라가 쇠 같은 든든함이 있을 것이나

단2:42 그 발가락이 얼마는 쇠요 얼마는 진흙인즉 그 나라가 얼마는 든든하고 얼마는 부서질 만할 것이며

단2:43 왕께서 쇠와 진흙이 섞인 것을 보셨은즉 그들이 다른 민족과 서로 섞일 것이나 그들이 피차에 합하지 아니함이 쇠와 진흙이 합하지 않음과 같으리이다

단2:44 이 여러 왕들의 시대에 하늘의 하나님이 한 나라를 세우시리니 이것은 영원히 망하지도 아니할 것이요 그 국권이 다른 백성에게로 돌아가지도 아니할 것이요 도리어 이 모든 나라를 쳐서 멸망시키고 영원히 설 것이라

단2:45 손대지 아니한 돌이 산에서 나와서 쇠와 놋과 진흙과 은과 금을 부서뜨린 것을 왕께서 보신 것은 크신 하나님이 장래 일을 왕께 알게 하신 것이라 이 꿈은 참되고 이 해석은 확실하니이다 하니

단2:46 이에 느부갓네살 왕이 엎드려 다니엘에게 절하고 명하여 예물과 향품을 그에게 주게 하니라

단2:47 왕이 대답하여 다니엘에게 이르되 너희 하나님은 참으로 모든 신들의 신이시요 모든 왕의 주재시로다 네가 능히 이 은밀한 것을 나타내었으니 네 하나님은 또 은밀한 것을 나타내시는 이시로다

단2:48 왕이 이에 다니엘을 높여 귀한 것이나 선물을 많이 주며 그를 세워 바벨론 온 지방을 다스리게 하며 또 바벨론 모든 지혜자의 어른을 삼았으며

단2:49 왕이 또 다니엘의 요구대로 사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고를 세워 바벨론 지방의 일을 다스리게 하였고 다니엘은 왕궁에 있었더라

시편 106 장.

시106:1 할렐루야 여호와께 감사하라 그는 선하시며 그 인자하심이 영원함이로다

시106:2 누가 능히 여호와의 권능을 다 말하며 주께서 받으실 찬양을 다 선포하랴

시106:3 정의를 지키는 자들과 항상 공의를 행하는 자는 복이 있도다

시106:4 여호와여 주의 백성에게 베푸시는 은혜로 나를 기억하시며 주의 구원으로 나를 돌보사

시106:5 내가 주의 택하신 자가 형통함을 보고 주의 나라의 기쁨을 나누어 가지게 하사 주의 유산을 자랑하게 하소서

시106:6 우리가 우리의 조상들처럼 범죄하여 사악을 행하며 악을 지었나이다

시106:7 우리의 조상들이 애굽에 있을 때 주의 기이한 일들을 깨닫지 못하며 주의 크신 인자를 기억하지 아니하고 바다 곧 홍해에서 거역하였나이다

시106:8 그러나 여호와께서는 자기의 이름을 위하여 그들을 구원하셨으니 그의 큰 권능을 만인이 알게 하려 하심이로다

시106:9 이에 홍해를 꾸짖으시니 곧 마르니 그들을 인도하여 바다 건너가기를 마치 광야를 지나감 같게 하사

시106:10 그들을 그 미워하는 자의 손에서 구원하시며 그 원수의 손에서 구원하셨고

시106:11 그들의 대적들은 물로 덮으시매 그들 중에서 하나도 살아 남지 못하였도다

시106:12 이에 그들이 그의 말씀을 믿고 그를 찬양하는 노래를 불렀도다

시106:13 그러나 그들은 그가 행하신 일을 곧 잊어버리며 그의 가르침을 기다리지 아니하고

시106:14 광야에서 욕심을 크게 내며 사막에서 하나님을 시험하였도다

시106:15 그러므로 여호와께서는 그들이 요구하는 것을 그들에게 주셨을지라도 그들의 영혼은 쇠약하게 하셨도다

시106:16 그들이 진영에서 모세와 여호와의 거룩한 자 아론을 질투하매

시106:17 땅이 갈라져 다단을 삼키며 아비람의 당을 덮었고

시106:18 불이 그들의 당에 붙음이여 화염이 악인들을 살랐도다

시106:19 그들이 호렙에서 송아지를 만들고 부어 만든 우상을 경배하여

시106:20 자기 영광을 풀 먹는 소의 형상으로 바꾸었도다

시106:21 애굽에서 큰 일을 행하신 그의 구원자 하나님을 그들이 잊었나니

시106:22 그는 함의 땅에서 기사와 홍해에서 놀랄 만한 일을 행하신 이시로다

1 Kings 20.

20:1 Now Ben-Hadad king of Aram mustered his entire army. Accompanied by thirty-two kings with their horses and chariots, he went up and besieged Samaria and attacked it.

20:2 He sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel, saying, "This is what Ben-Hadad says:

20:3 'Your silver and gold are mine, and the best of your wives and children are mine.'"

20:4 The king of Israel answered, "Just as you say, my lord the king. I and all I have are yours."

20:5 The messengers came again and said, "This is what Ben-Hadad says: 'I sent to demand your silver and gold, your wives and your children.

20:6 But about this time tomorrow I am going to send my officials to search your palace and the houses of your officials. They will seize everything you value and carry it away.'"

20:7 The king of Israel summoned all the elders of the land and said to them, "See how this man is looking for trouble! When he sent for my wives and my children, my silver and my gold, I did not refuse him."

20:8 The elders and the people all answered, "Don't listen to him or agree to his demands."

20:9 So he replied to Ben-Hadad's messengers, "Tell my lord the king, 'Your servant will do all you demanded the first time, but this demand I cannot meet.'" They left and took the answer back to Ben-Hadad.

20:10 Then Ben-Hadad sent another message to Ahab: "May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if enough dust remains in Samaria to give each of my men a handful."

20:11 The king of Israel answered, "Tell him: 'One who puts on his armor should not boast like one who takes it off.'"

20:12 Ben-Hadad heard this message while he and the kings were drinking in their tents, and he ordered his men: "Prepare to attack." So they prepared to attack the city.

20:13 Meanwhile a prophet came to Ahab king of Israel and announced, "This is what the LORD says: 'Do you see this vast army? I will give it into your hand today, and then you will know that I am the LORD.'"

20:14 "But who will do this?" asked Ahab. The prophet replied, "This is what the LORD says: 'The young officers of the provincial commanders will do it.'" "And who will start the battle?" he asked. The prophet answered, "You will."

20:15 So Ahab summoned the young officers of the provincial commanders, 232 men. Then he assembled the rest of the Israelites, 7,000 in all.

20:16 They set out at noon while Ben-Hadad and the 32 kings allied with him were in their tents getting drunk.

20:17 The young officers of the provincial commanders went out first. Now Ben-Hadad had dispatched scouts, who reported, "Men are advancing from Samaria."

20:18 He said, "If they have come out for peace, take them alive; if they have come out for war, take them alive."

20:19 The young officers of the provincial commanders marched out of the city with the army behind them

20:20 and each one struck down his opponent. At that, the Arameans fled, with the Israelites in pursuit. But Ben-Hadad king of Aram escaped on horseback with some of his horsemen.

20:21 The king of Israel advanced and overpowered the horses and chariots and inflicted heavy losses on the Arameans.

20:22 Afterward, the prophet came to the king of Israel and said, "Strengthen your position and see what must be done, because next spring the king of Aram will attack you again."

20:23 Meanwhile, the officials of the king of Aram advised him, "Their gods are gods of the hills. That is why they were too strong for us. But if we fight them on the plains, surely we will be stronger than they.

20:24 Do this: Remove all the kings from their commands and replace them with other officers.

20:25 You must also raise an army like the one you lost--horse for horse and chariot for chariot--so we can fight Israel on the plains. Then surely we will be stronger than they." He agreed with them and acted accordingly.

20:26 The next spring Ben-Hadad mustered the Arameans and went up to Aphek to fight against Israel.

20:27 When the Israelites were also mustered and given provisions, they marched out to meet them. The Israelites camped opposite them like two small flocks of goats, while the Arameans covered the countryside.

20:28 The man of God came up and told the king of Israel, "This is what the LORD says: 'Because the Arameans think the LORD is a god of the hills and not a god of the valleys, I will deliver this vast army into your hands, and you will know that I am the LORD.'"

20:29 For seven days they camped opposite each other, and on the seventh day the battle was joined. The Israelites inflicted a hundred thousand casualties on the Aramean foot soldiers in one day.

20:30 The rest of them escaped to the city of Aphek, where the wall collapsed on twenty-seven thousand of them. And Ben-Hadad fled to the city and hid in an inner room.

20:31 His officials said to him, "Look, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful. Let us go to the king of Israel with sackcloth around our waists and ropes around our heads. Perhaps he will spare your life."

20:32 Wearing sackcloth around their waists and ropes around their heads, they went to the king of Israel and said, "Your servant Ben-Hadad says: 'Please let me live.'" The king answered, "Is he still alive? He is my brother."

20:33 The men took this as a good sign and were quick to pick up his word. "Yes, your brother Ben-Hadad!" they said. "Go and get him," the king said. When Ben-Hadad came out, Ahab had him come up into his chariot.

20:34 "I will return the cities my father took from your father," Ben-Hadad offered. "You may set up your own market areas in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria." Ahab said,"On the basis of a treaty I will set you free." So he made a treaty with him, and let him go.

20:35 By the word of the LORD one of the sons of the prophets said to his companion, "Strike me with your weapon," but the man refused.

20:36 So the prophet said, "Because you have not obeyed the LORD, as soon as you leave me a lion will kill you." And after the man went away, a lion found him and killed him.

20:37 The prophet found another man and said, "Strike me, please." So the man struck him and wounded him.

20:38 Then the prophet went and stood by the road waiting for the king. He disguised himself with his headband down over his eyes.

20:39 As the king passed by, the prophet called out to him, "Your servant went into the thick of the battle, and someone came to me with a captive and said, 'Guard this man. If he is missing, it will be your life for his life, or you must pay a talent of silver.'

20:40 While your servant was busy here and there, the man disappeared." "That is your sentence," the king of Israel said. "You have pronounced it yourself."

20:41 Then the prophet quickly removed the headband from his eyes, and the king of Israel recognized him as one of the prophets.

20:42 He said to the king, "This is what the LORD says: 'You have set free a man I had determined should die. Therefore it is your life for his life, your people for his people.'"

20:43 Sullen and angry, the king of Israel went to his palace in Samaria.

1 Thessalonians 3.

3:1 So when we could stand it no longer, we thought it best to be left by ourselves in Athens.

3:2 We sent Timothy, who is our brother and God's fellow worker in spreading the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in your faith,

3:3 so that no one would be unsettled by these trials. You know quite well that we were destined for them.

3:4 In fact, when we were with you, we kept telling you that we would be persecuted. And it turned out that way, as you well know.

3:5 For this reason, when I could stand it no longer, I sent to find out about your faith. I was afraid that in some way the tempter might have tempted you and our efforts might have been useless.

3:6 But Timothy has just now come to us from you and has brought good news about your faith and love. He has told us that you always have pleasant memories of us and that you long to see us, just as we also long to see you.

3:7 Therefore, brothers, in all our distress and persecution we were encouraged about you because of your faith.

3:8 For now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord.

3:9 How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our God because of you?

3:10 Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith.

3:11 Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus clear the way for us to come to you.

3:12 May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you.

3:13 May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones.

Daniel 2.

2:1 In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; his mind was troubled and he could not sleep.

2:2 So the king summoned the magicians, enchanters, sorcerers and astrologers to tell him what he had dreamed. When they came in and stood before the king,

2:3 he said to them, "I have had a dream that troubles me and I want to know what it means."

2:4 Then the astrologers answered the king in Aramaic, "O king, live forever! Tell your servants the dream, and we will interpret it."

2:5 The king replied to the astrologers, "This is what I have firmly decided: If you do not tell me what my dream was and interpret it, I will have you cut into pieces and your houses turned into piles of rubble.

2:6 But if you tell me the dream and explain it, you will receive froi me gifts and rewards and great honor. So tell me the dream and interpret it for me."

2:7 Once more they replied, "Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will interpret it."

2:8 Then the king answered, "I am certain that you are trying to gain time, because you realize that this is what I have firmly decided:

2:9 If you do not tell me the dream, there is just one penalty for you. You have conspired to tell me misleading and wicked things, hoping the situation will change. So then, tell me the dream, and I will know that you can interpret it for me."

2:10 The astrologers answered the king, "There is not a man on earth who can do what the king asks! No king, however great and mighty, has ever asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or astrologer.

2:11 What the king asks is too difficult. No one can reveal it to the king except the gods, and they do not live among men."

2:12 This made the king so angry and furious that he ordered the execution of all the wise men of Babylon.

2:13 So the decree was issued to put the wise men to death, and men were sent to look for Daniel and his friends to put them to death.

2:14 When Arioch, the commander of the king's guard, had gone out to put to death the wise men of Babylon, Daniel spoke to him with wisdom and tact.

2:15 He asked the king's officer, "Why did the king issue such a harsh decree?" Arioch then explained the matter to Daniel.

2:16 At this, Daniel went in to the king and asked for time, so that he might interpret the dream for him.

2:17 Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.

2:18 He urged them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that he and his friends might not be executed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

2:19 During the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Then Daniel praised the God of heaven

2:20 and said: "Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his.

2:21 He changes times and seasons; he sets up kings and deposes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.

2:22 He reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with him.

2:23 I thank and praise you, O God of my fathers: You have given me wisdom and power, you have made known to me what we asked of you, you have made known to us the dream of the king."

2:24 Then Daniel went to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to execute the wise men of Babylon, and said to him, "Do not execute the wise men of Babylon. Take me to the king, and I will interpret his dream for him."

2:25 Arioch took Daniel to the king at once and said, "I have found a man among the exiles from Judah who can tell the king what his dream means."

2:26 The king asked Daniel (also called Belteshazzar), "Are you able to tell me what I saw in my dream and interpret it?"

2:27 Daniel replied, "No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about,

2:28 but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries. He has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in days to come. Your dream and the visions that passed through your mind as you lay on your bed are these:

2:29 "As you were lying there, O king, your mind turned to things to come, and the revealer of mysteries showed you what is going to happen.

2:30 As for me, this mystery has been revealed to me, not because I have greater wisdom than other living men, but so that you, O king, may know the interpretation and that you may understand what went through your mind.

2:31 "You looked, O king, and there before you stood a large statue--an enormous, dazzling statue, awesome in appearance.

2:32 The head of the statue was made of pure gold, its chest and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of bronze,

2:33 its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of baked clay.

2:34 While you were watching, a rock was cut out, but not by human hands. It struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay and smashed them.

2:35 Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver and the gold were broken to pieces at the same time and became like chaff on a threshing floor in the summer. The wind swept them away without leaving a trace. But the rock that struck the statue became a huge mountain and filled the whole earth.

2:36 "This was the dream, and now we will interpret it to the king.

2:37 You, O king, are the king of kings. The God of heaven has given you dominion and power and might and glory;

2:38 in your hands he has placed mankind and the beasts of the field and the birds of the air. Wherever they live, he has made you ruler over them all. You are that head of gold.

2:39 "After you, another kingdom will rise, inferior to yours. Next, a third kingdom, one of bronze, will rule over the whole earth.

2:40 Finally, there will be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron--for iron breaks and smashes everything--and as iron breaks things to pieces, so it will crush and break all the others.

2:41 Just as you saw that the feet and toes were partly of baked clay and partly of iron, so this will be a divided kingdom; yet it will have some of the strength of iron in it, even as you saw iron mixed with clay.

2:42 As the toes were partly iron and partly clay, so this kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle.

2:43 And just as you saw the iron mixed with baked clay, so the people will be a mixture and will not remain united, any more than iron mixes with clay.

2:44 "In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever.

2:45 This is the meaning of the vision of the rock cut out of a mountain, but not by human hands--a rock that broke the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold to pieces. "The great God has shown the king what will take place in the future. The dream is true and the interpretation is trustworthy."

2:46 Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell prostrate before Daniel and paid him honor and ordered that an offering and incense be presented to him.

2:47 The king said to Daniel, "Surely your God is the God of gods and the Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries, for you were able to reveal this mystery."

2:48 Then the king placed Daniel in a high position and lavished many gifts on him. He made him ruler over the entire province of Babylon and placed him in charge of all its wise men.

2:49 Moreover, at Daniel's request the king appointed Shadrach( Meshach an` Abednego administrators over the province of Babylon, while Daniel himself remained at the royal court.

Psalms 106.

106:1 Praise the LORD. Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.

106:2 Who can proclaim the mighty acts of the LORD or fully declare his praise?

106:3 Blessed are they who maintain justice, who constantly do what is right.

106:4 Remember me, O LORD, when you show favor to your people, come to my aid when you save them,

106:5 that I may enjoy the prosperity of your chosen ones, that I may share in the joy of your nation and join your inheritance in giving praise.

106:6 We have sinned, even as our fathers did; we have done wrong and acted wickedly.

106:7 When our fathers were in Egypt, they gave no thought to your miracles; they did not remember your many kindnesses, and they rebelled by the sea, the Red Sea.

106:8 Yet he saved them for his name's sake, to make his mighty power known.

106:9 He rebuked the Red Sea, and it dried up; he led them through the depths as through a desert.

106:10 He saved them from the hand of the foe; from the hand of the enemy he redeemed them.

106:11 The waters covered their adversaries; not one of them survived.

106:12 Then they believed his promises and sang his praise.

106:13 But they soon forgot what he had done and did not wait for his counsel.

106:14 In the desert they gave in to their craving; in the wasteland they put God to the test.

106:15 So he gave them what they asked for, but sent a wasting disease upon them.

106:16 In the camp they grew envious of Moses and of Aaron, who was consecrated to the LORD.

106:17 The earth opened up and swallowed Dathan; it buried the company of Abiram.

106:18 Fire blazed among their followers; a flame consumed the wicked.

106:19 At Horeb they made a calf and worshiped an idol cast from metal.

106:20 They exchanged their Glory for an image of a bull, which eats grass.

106:21 They forgot the God who saved them, who had done great things in Egypt,

106:22 miracles in the land of Ham and awesome deeds by the Red Sea.

106:23 So he said he would destroy them--had not Moses, his chosen one, stood in the breach before him to keep his wrath from destroying them.

106:24 Then they despised the pleasant land; they did not believe his promise.

106:25 They grumbled in their tents and did not obey the LORD.

106:26 So he swore to them with uplifted hand that he would make them fall in the desert,

106:27 make their descendants fall among the nations and scatter them throughout the lands.

106:28 They yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods;

106:29 they provoked the LORD to anger by their wicked deeds, and a plague broke out among them.

106:30 But Phinehas stood up and intervened, and the plague was checked.

106:31 This was credited to him as righteousness for endless generations to come.

106:32 By the waters of Meribah they angered the LORD, and trouble came to Moses because of them;

106:33 for they rebelled against the Spirit of God, and rash words came from Moses' lips.

106:34 They did not destroy the peoples as the LORD had commanded them,

106:35 but they mingled with the nations and adopted their customs.

106:36 They worshiped their idols, which became a snare to them.

106:37 They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons.

106:38 They shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, and the land was desecrated by their blood.

106:39 They defiled themselves by what they did; by their deeds they prostituted themselves.

106:40 Therefore the LORD was angry with his people and abhorred his inheritance.

106:41 He handed them over to the nations, and their foes ruled over them.

106:42 Their enemies oppressed them and subjected them to their power.

106:43 Many times he delivered them, but they were bent on rebellion and they wasted away in their sin.

106:44 But he took note of their distress when he heard their cry;

106:45 for their sake he remembered his covenant and out of his great love he relented.

106:46 He caused them to be pitied by all who held them captive.

106:47 Save us, O LORD our God, and gather us from the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name and glory in your praise.

106:48 Praise be to the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Let all the people say, "Amen!" Praise the LORD.
