열왕기상 21 장.

왕상21:1 그 후에 이 일이 있으니라 이스르엘 사람 나봇에게 이스르엘에 포도원이 있어 사마리아의 왕 아합의 왕궁에서 가깝더니

왕상21:2 아합이 나봇에게 말하여 이르되 네 포도원이 내 왕궁 곁에 가까이 있으니 내게 주어 채소 밭을 삼게 하라 내가 그 대신에 그보다 더 아름다운 포도원을 네게 줄 것이요 만일 네가 좋게 여기면 그 값을 돈으로 네게 주리라

왕상21:3 나봇이 아합에게 말하되 내 조상의 유산을 왕에게 주기를 여호와께서 금하실지로다 하니

왕상21:4 이스르엘 사람 나봇이 아합에게 대답하여 이르기를 내 조상의 유산을 왕께 줄 수 없다 하므로 아합이 근심하고 답답하여 왕궁으로 돌아와 침상에 누워 얼굴을 돌리고 식사를 아니하니

왕상21:5 그의 아내 이세벨이 그에게 나아와 이르되 왕의 마음에 무엇을 근심하여 식사를 아니하나이까

왕상21:6 왕이 그에게 이르되 내가 이스르엘 사람 나봇에게 말하여 이르기를 네 포도원을 내게 주되 돈으로 바꾸거나 만일 네가 좋아하면 내가 그 대신에 포도원을 네게 주리라 한즉 그가 대답하기를 내가 내 포도원을 네게 주지 아니하겠노라 하기 때문이로다

왕상21:7 그의 아내 이세벨이 그에게 이르되 왕이 지금 이스라엘 나라를 다스리시나이까 일어나 식사를 하시고 마음을 즐겁게 하소서 내가 이스르엘 사람 나봇의 포도원을 왕께 드리리이다 하고

왕상21:8 아합의 이름으로 편지들을 쓰고 그 인을 치고 봉하여 그의 성읍에서 나봇과 함께 사는 장로와 귀족들에게 보내니

왕상21:9 그 편지 사연에 이르기를 금식을 선포하고 나봇을 백성 가운데에 높이 앉힌 후에

왕상21:10 불량자 두 사람을 그의 앞에 마주 앉히고 그에게 대하여 증거하기를 네가 하나님과 왕을 저주하였다 하게 하고 곧 그를 끌고 나가서 돌로 쳐죽이라 하였더라

왕상21:11 그의 성읍 사람 곧 그의 성읍에 사는 장로와 귀족들이 이세벨의 지시 곧 그가 자기들에게 보낸 편지에 쓴 대로하여

왕상21:12 금식을 선포하고 나봇을 백성 가운데 높이 앉히매

왕상21:13 때에 불량자 두 사람이 들어와 그의 앞에 앉고 백성 앞에서 나봇에게 대하여 증언을 하여 이르기를 나봇이 하나님과 왕을 저주하였다 하매 무리가 그를 성읍 밖으로 끌고 나가서 돌로 쳐죽이고

왕상21:14 이세벨에게 통보하기를 나봇이 돌에 맞아 죽었나이다 하니

왕상21:15 이세벨이 나봇이 돌에 맞아 죽었다 함을 듣고 이세벨이 아합에게 이르되 일어나 그 이스르엘 사람 나봇이 돈으로 바꾸어 주기를 싫어하던 나봇의 포도원을 차지하소서 나봇이 살아 있지 아니하고 죽었나이다

왕상21:16 아합은 나봇이 죽었다 함을 듣고 곧 일어나 이스르엘 사람 나봇의 포도원을 차지하러 그리로 내려갔더라

왕상21:17 여호와의 말씀이 디셉 사람 엘리야에게 임하여 이르시되

왕상21:18 너는 일어나 내려가서 사마리아에 있는 이스라엘의 아합 왕을 만나라 그가 나봇의 포도원을 차지하러 그리로 내려갔나니

왕상21:19 너는 그에게 말하여 이르기를 여호와의 말씀이 네가 죽이고 또 빼앗았느냐고 하셨다 하고 또 그에게 이르기를 여호와의 말씀이 개들이 나봇의 피를 핥은 곳에서 개들이 네 피 곧 네 몸의 피도 핥으리라 하였다 하라

왕상21:20 아합이 엘리야에게 이르되 내 대적자여 네가 나를 찾았느냐 대답하되 내가 찾았노라 네가 네 자신을 팔아 여호와 보시기에 악을 행하였으므로

왕상21:21 여호와 말씀이 내가 재앙을 네게 내려 너를 쓸어버리되 네게 속한 남자는 이스라엘 가운데에 매인 자나 놓인 자를 다 멸할 것이요

왕상21:22 또 네 집이 느밧의 아들 여로보암의 집처럼 되게 하고 아히야의 아들 바아사의 집처럼 되게 하리니 이는 네가 나를 노하게 하고 이스라엘에게 범죄하게 한 까닭이니라 하셨고

왕상21:23 이세벨에게 대하여도 여호와께서 말씀하여 이르시되 개들이 이스르엘 성읍 곁에서 이세벨을 먹을지라

왕상21:24 아합에게 속한 자로서 성읍에서 죽은 자는 개들이 먹고 들에서 죽은 자는 공중의 새가 먹으리라고 하셨느니라 하니

왕상21:25 예로부터 아합과 같이 그 자신을 팔아 여호와 앞에서 악을 행한 자가 없음은 그를 그의 아내 이세벨이 충동하였음이라

왕상21:26 그가 여호와께서 이스라엘 자손 앞에서 쫓아내신 아모리 사람의 모든 행함 같이 우상에게 복종하여 심히 가증하게 행하였더라

왕상21:27 아합이 이 모든 말씀을 들을 때에 그의 옷을 찢고 굵은 베로 몸을 동이고 금식하고 굵은 베에 누우며 또 풀이 죽어 다니더라

왕상21:28 여호와의 말씀이 디셉 사람 엘리야에게 임하여 이르시되

왕상21:29 아합이 내 앞에서 겸비함을 네가 보느냐 그가 내 앞에서 겸비하므로 내가 재앙을 저의 시대에는 내리지 아니하고 그 아들의 시대에야 그의 집에 재앙을 내리리라 하셨더라

데살로니가전서 4 장.

살전4:1 그러므로 형제들아 우리가 끝으로 주 예수 안에서 너희에게 구하고 권면하노니 너희가 마땅 어떻게 행하며 하나님을 기쁘시게 할 수 있는지를 우리에게 배웠으니 곧 너희가 행하는 바라 더욱 많이 힘쓰라

살전4:2 우리가 주 예수로 말미암아 너희에게 무슨 명령으로 준 것을 너희가 아느니라

살전4:3 하나님의 듯은 이것이니 너희의 거룩함이라 곧 음란을 버리고

살전4:4 각각 거룩함과 존귀함으로 자기의 아내 대할 줄을 알고

살전4:5 하나님을 모르는 이방인과 같이 색욕을 따르지 말고

살전4:6 이 일에 분수를 넘어서 형제를 해하지 말라 우리가 너희에게 미리 말하고 증언한 것과 같이 이 모든 일에 주께서 신원하여 주심이라

살전4:7 하나님이 우리를 부르심은 부정하게 하심이 아니요 거룩하게 하심이니

살전4:8 그러므로 저버리는 자는 사람을 저버림이 아니요 너희에게 그의 성령을 주신 하나님을 저버림이니라

살전4:9 형제 사랑에 관하여는 너희에게 쓸 것이 없음은 너희들 자신이 하나님의 가르치심을 받아 서로 사랑함이라

살전4:10 너희가 온 마게도냐 모든 형제에 대하여 과연 이것을 행하도다 형제들아 권하노니 더욱 그렇게 행하고

살전4:11 또 너희에게 명한 것 같이 조용히 자기 일을 하고 너희 손으로 일하기를 힘쓰라

살전4:12 이는 외인에 대하여 단정히 행하고 또한 아무 궁핍함이 없게 하려 함이라

살전4:13 형제들아 자는 자들에 관하여는 너희가 알지 못함을 우리가 원하지 아니하노니 이는 소망 없는 다른 이와 같이 슬퍼하지 않게 하려 함이라

살전4:14 우리가 예수께서 죽으셨다가 다시 살아나심을 믿을진대 이와 같이 예수 안에서 자는 자들도 하나님이 그와 함께 데리고 오시리라

살전4:15 우리가 주의 말씀으로 너희에게 이것을 말하노니 주께서 강림하실 때까지 우리 살아 남아 있는 자도 자는 자보다 결코 앞서지 못하리라

살전4:16 주께서 호령과 천사장의 소리와 하나님의 나팔 소리로 친히 하늘로부터 강림하시리니 그리스도 안에서 죽은 자들이 먼저 일어나고

살전4:17 그 후에 우리 살아 남은 자들도 그들과 함께 구름 속으로 끌어 올려 공중에서 주를 영접하게 하시리니 그리하여 우리가 항상 주와 함께 있으리라

살전4:18 그러므로 이러한 말로 서로 위로하라

다니엘 3 장.

단3:1 느부갓네살 왕이 금으로 신상을 만들었으니 높이는 육십 규빗이요 너비는 여섯 규빗이라 그것을 바벨론 지방의 두라 평지에 세웠더라

단3:2 느부갓네살 왕이 사람을 보내어 총독과 수령과 행정관과 모사와 재무관과 재판관과 법률 사와 각 지방 모든 관원을 느부갓네살 왕이 세운 신상의 낙성식에 참석하게 하매

단3:3 이에 총독과 수령과 행정관과 모사와 재무관과 재판잔과 법률사와 각 지방 모든 관원이 느부갓에살 왕이 세운 신상의 낙성식에 참석하여 느부갓네살 왕이 세운 신상 앞에 서니라

단3:4 선포하는 자가 크게 외쳐 이르되 백성들과 나라들과 각 언어로 말하는 자들아 왕이 너희 무리에게 명하시나니

단3:5 너희는 나팔과 피리와 수금과 삼현금과 양금과 생황과 및 모든 악기 소리를 들을 때에 엎드리어 느부갓네살 왕이 세운 금 신상에게 절하라

단3:6 누구든지 엎드려 절하지 아니하는 자는 즉시 맹렬히 타는 풀무불에 던져 넣으리라 하였더라

단3:7 모든 백성과 나라들과 각 언어를 말하는 자들이 나팔과 피리와 수금과 삼현금과 양금과 및 모든 악기 소리를 듣자 곧 느부갓네살 왕이 세운 금 신상에게 엎드려 절하니라

단3:8 그 때에 어떤 갈대아 사람들이 나아와 유다 사람들을 참소하니라

단3:9 그들이 느부갓네살 왕에게 이르되 왕이여 만수무강 하옵소서

단3:10 왕이여 왕이 명령을 내리사 모든 사람이 나팔과 피리와 수금과 삼현금과 양금과 생황과 및 모든 악기 소리를 듣거든 엎드려 금 신상에게 절할 것이라

단3:11 누구든지 엎드려 절하지 아니하는 자는 맹렬히 타는 풀무불 가운데에 던져 넣음을 당하리라 하지 아니하셨나이까 하니

단3:12 이제 몇 유다 사람 사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고는 왕이 세워 바벨론 지방을 다스리게 하신 자 이거늘 왕이여 이 사람들이 왕을 높이지 아니하며 왕의 신들을 섬기지 아니하며 왕이 세우신 금 신상에게 절하지 아니하나이다

단3:13 느부잣네살 왕이 노하고 분하여 사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고를 끌어오라 말하매 드디어 그 사람들을 왕의 앞으로 끌어온지라

단3:14 느부갓네살이 그들에게 물어 이르되 사드락, 메삭, 아벳느고야 너희가 내 신을 섬기지 아니하며 내가 세운 금 신상에게 절하지 아니한다 하니 사실이냐

단3:15 이제라도 너희가 준비하였다가 나팔과 비파와 수금과 삼현금과 양금과 생황과 및 모든 악기 소리를 들을 때 내가 만든 신상 앞에 엎드려 절하면 좋거니와 너희가 만일 절하지 아니하면 즉시 너희를 맹렬히 타는 풀무불 가운데에 던져 넣을 것이니 능히 너희를 내 손에서 건져낼 신이 누구이겠느냐 하니

단3:16 사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고가 왕에게 대답하여 이르되 느부갓네살이여 우리가 이 일에 대하여 왕에게 대답할 필요가 없나이다

단3:17 왕이여 우리가 섬기는 하나님이 계시다면 우리를 맹렬히 타는 풀무불 가운데에서 능히 건져내시겠고 왕의 손에서도 건져내시리이다

단3:18 그렇게 하지 아니하실지라도 왕이여 우리가 왕의 신들을 섬기지도 아니하고 왕이 세우신 금 신상에게 절하지도 아니할 줄을 아옵소서

단3:19 느부갓네살이 분이 가득하여 사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고를 향하여 얼굴빛을 바꾸고 명령하여 이르되 그 풀무불을 뜨겁게 하기를 평소보다 칠 배나 뜨겁게 하라 하고

단3:20 군대 중 용사 몇 사람에게 명령하여 사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고를 결박하여 극렬히 타는 풀무불 가운데에 던지라 하니라

단3:21 그러자 그 사람들을 겉옷과 속옷과 모자와 다른 옷을 입은 채 결박하여 맹렬히 타는 풀무불 가운데에 던졌더라

단3:22 왕의 명령이 엄하고 풀무불이 심히 뜨거우므로 불꽃이 사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고를 붙든 사람을 태워 죽였고

단3:23 이 세 사람 사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고는 결박된 채 맹렬히 타는 풀무불 가운데에 떨어졌더라

단3:24 그 때에 느부갓네살 왕이 놀라 급히 일어나서 모사들에게 물어 이르되 우리가 결박하여 불 가운데에 던진 자는 세 사람이 아니었느냐 하니 그들이 왕에게 대답하여 이르되 왕이여 옳소이다 하더라

단3:25 왕이 또 말하여 이르되 내가 보니 결박되지 아니한 네 사람이 불 가운데로 다니는데 상하지도 아니하였고 그 넷째의 모양은 신들의 아들과 같도다 하고

단3:26 느부갓네살이 맹렬히 타는 풀무불 아귀 가까이 가서 불러 이르되 지극히 높으신 하나님의 종 사드락, 메삭, 아벳느고야 나와서 이리로 오라 하매 사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고가 불 가운데에서 나온지라

단3:27 총독과 지사와 행정관과 왕의 모사들이 모여 이 사람들을 본 즉 불이 능히 그들의 몸을 해하지 못하였고 머리털도 그을리지 아니하였고 겉옷 빛도 변하지 아니하였고 불 탄 냄새도 없었더라

단3:28 느부갓네살이 말하여 이르되 사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고의 하나님을 찬송할지로다 그가 그의 천사를 보내사 자기를 의뢰하고 그들의 몸을 바쳐 왕의 명령을 거역하고 그 하나님 밖에는 다른 신을 섬기지 아니하며 그에게 절하지 아니한 종들을 구원하셨도다

단3:29 그러므로 내가 이제 조서를 내리노니 각 백성과 각 나라와 각 언어를 말하는 자가 모두 사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고의 하나님께 경솔히 말하거든 그 몸을 쪼개고 그 집을 거름터로 삼을지니 이는 이같이 사람을 구원할 다른 신이 없음이니라 하더라

단3:30 왕이 드디어 사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고를 바벨론 지방에서 더욱 높이니라

시편 107 장.

시107:1 여호와께 감사하라 그는 선하시며 그 인자하심이 영원함이로다

시107:2 여호와의 속량을 받은 자들은 이같이 말할지어다 여호와께서 대적의 손에서 그들을 속량하사

시107:3 동서남북 각 지방에서부터 모으셨도다

시107:4 그들이 광야 사막 길에서 방황하며 거주할 성읍을 찾지 못하고

시107:5 주리고 목이 말라 그들의 영혼이 그들 안에서 피곤하였도다

시107:6 이에 그들이 근심 중에 여호와께 부르짖으매 그들의 고통에서 건지시고

시107:7 또 바른 길로 인도하사 거주할 성읍에 이르게 하셨도다

시107:8 여호와의 인자하심과 인생에게 행하신 기적으로 말미암아 그를 찬송할지로다

시107:9 그가 사모하는 영혼에게 만족을 주시며 주린 영혼에게 좋은 것으로 채워주심이로다

시107:10 사람이 흑암과 사망의 그늘에 앉으며 곤고와 쇠사슬에 매임은

시107:11 하나님의 말씀을 거역하며 지존자의 뜻을 멸시함이라

시107:12 그러므로 그가 고통을 주어 그들의 마음을 겸손하게 하셨으니 그들이 엎드러져도 돕는 자가 없었도다

시107:13 이에 그들이 그 환난 중에 여호와께 부르짖으매 그들의 고통에서 구원하시되

시107:14 흑암과 사망의 그늘에서 인도하여 내시고 그들의 얽어 맨 줄을 끊으셨도다

시107:15 여호와의 인자하심과 인생에서 행하신 기적으로 말미암아 그를 찬송할지로다

시107:16 그가 놋문을 깨뜨리시며 쇠빗장을 꺾으셨음이로다

시107:17 미련한 자들은 그들의 죄악의 길을 따르고 그들의 악을 범하기 때문에 고난을 받아

시107:18 그들은 그들의 모든 음식물을 싫어하게 되어 사망의 문에 이르렀도다

시107:19 이에 그들이 그들의 고통 때문에 여호와께 부르짖으매 그가 그들의 고통에서 그들을 구원하시되

시107:20 그가 그의 말씀을 보내어 그들을 고치시고 위험한 지경에서 건지시는도다

시107:21 여호와의 인자하심과 인생에서 행하신 기적으로 말미암아 그를 찬송할지로다

시107:22 감사제를 드리며 노래하여 그가 행하신 일을 선포할지로다

시107:23 배들을 바다에 띄우며 큰 물에서 일을 하는 자는

시107:24 여호와께서 행하신 일들과 그의 기이한 일들을 깊은 바다에서 보나니

시107:25 여호와께서 명령하신즉 광풍이 일어나 바다 물결을 일으키는도다

시107:26 그들이 하늘로 솟구쳤다가 깊은 곳으로 내려가나니 그 위험 때문에 그들의 영혼이 녹는도다

시107:27 그들이 이리저리 구르며 취한 자 같이 비틀거리니 그들의 모든 지각이 혼돈 속에 빠지는도다

시107:28 이에 그들이 그들의 고통 때문에 여호와께 부르짖으매 그가 그들의 고통에서 그들을 인도하여 내시고

시107:29 광풍을 고요하게 하사 물결도 잔잔하게 하시는도다

시107:30 그들이 평온함으로 말미암아 기뻐하는 중에 여호와께서 그들이 바라는 항구로 인도하시는도다

시107:31 여호와의 인자하심과 인생에게 행하신 기적으로 말미암아 그를 찬송할지로다

시107:32 백성의 모임에서 그를 높이며 장로들의 자리에서 그를 찬송할지로다

시107:33 여호와께서는 강이 변하여 광야가 되게 하시며 샘이 변하여 마른 땅이 되게 하시며

시107:34 그 주민의 악으로 말미암아 옥토가 변하여 염전이 되게 하시며

시107:35 또 광야가 변하여 못이 되게 하시며 마른 땅이 변하여 샘물이 되게 하시고

시107:36 주린 자들로 말미암아 거기에 살게 하사 그들이 거주할 성읍을 준비하게 하시고

시107:37 밭에 파종하며 포도원을 재배하여 풍성한 소출을 거두게 하시며

시107:38 또 복을 주사 그들이 크게 번성하게 하시고 그의 가축이 감소하지 아니하게 하실지라도

시107:39 다시 압박과 재난과 우환을 통하여 그들의 수를 줄이시며 낮추시는도다

시107:40 여호와께서 고관들에게는 능욕을 쏟아 부으시고 길 없는 황야에서 유리하게 하시나

시107:41 궁핍한 자는 그의 고통으로부터 건져 주시고 그의 가족을 양 떼 같이 지켜 주시나니

시107:42 정직한 자는 보고 기뻐하며 모든 사악한 자는 자기 입을 봉하리로다

시107:43 지혜 있는 자들은 이러한 일들을 지켜보고 여호와의 인자하심을 깨달으리로다

1 Kings 21.

21:1 Some time later there was an incident involving a vineyard belonging to Naboth the Jezreelite. The vineyard was in Jezreel, close to the palace of Ahab king of Samaria.

21:2 Ahab said to Naboth, "Let me have your vineyard to use for a vegetable garden, since it is close to my palace. In exchange I will give you a better vineyard or, if you prefer, I will pay you whatever it is worth."

21:3 But Naboth replied, "The LORD forbid that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers."

21:4 So Ahab went home, sullen and angry because Naboth the Jezreelite had said, "I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers." He lay on his bed sulking and refused to eat.

21:5 His wife Jezebel came in and asked him, "Why are you so sullen? Why won't you eat?"

21:6 He answered her, "Because I said to Naboth the Jezreelite, 'Sell me your vineyard; or if you prefer, I will give you another vineyard in its place.' But he said, 'I will not give you my vineyard.'"

21:7 Jezebel his wife said, "Is this how you act as king over Israel? Get up and eat! Cheer up. I'll get you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite."

21:8 So she wrote letters in Ahab's name, placed his seal on them, and sent them to the elders and nobles who lived in Naboth's city with him.

21:9 In those letters she wrote: "Proclaim a day of fasting and seat Naboth in a prominent place among the people.

21:10 But seat two scoundrels opposite him and have them testify that he has cursed both God and the king. Then take him out and stone him to death."

21:11 So the elders and nobles who lived in Naboth's city did as Jezebel directed in the letters she had written to them.

21:12 They proclaimed a fast and seated Naboth in a prominent place among the people.

21:13 Then two scoundrels came and sat opposite him and brought charges against Naboth before the people, saying, "Naboth has cursed both God and the king." So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death.

21:14 Then they sent word to Jezebel: "Naboth has been stoned and is dead."

21:15 As soon as Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned to death, she said to Ahab, "Get up and take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite that he refused to sell you. He is no longer alive, but dead."

21:16 When Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, he got up and went down to take possession of Naboth's vineyard.

21:17 Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite:

21:18 "Go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who rules in Samaria. He is now in Naboth's vineyard, where he has gone to take possession of it.

21:19 Say to him, 'This is what the LORD says: Have you not murdered a man and seized his property?' Then say to him, 'This is what the LORD says: In the place where dogs licked up Naboth's blood, dogs will lick up your blood--yes, yours!'"

21:20 Ahab said to Elijah, "So you have found me, my enemy!" "I have found you," he answered, "because you have sold yourself to do evil in the eyes of the LORD.

21:21 'I am going to bring disaster on you. I will consume your descendants and cut off from Ahab every last male in Israel--slave or free.

21:22 I will make your house like that of Jeroboam son of Nebat and that of Baasha son of Ahijah, because you have provoked me to anger and have caused Israel to sin.'

21:23 "And also concerning Jezebel the LORD says: 'Dogs will devour Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel.'

21:24 "Dogs will eat those belonging to Ahab who die in the city, and the birds of the air will feed on those who die in the country."

21:25 (There was never a man like Ahab, who sold himself to do evil in the eyes of the LORD, urged on by Jezebel his wife.

21:26 He behaved in the vilest manner by going after idols, like the Amorites the LORD drove out before Israel.)

21:27 When Ahab heard these words, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and fasted. He lay in sackcloth and went around meekly.

21:28 Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite:

21:29 "Have you noticed how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Because he has humbled himself, I will not bring this disaster in his day, but I will bring it on his house in the days of his son."

1 Thessalonians 4.

4:1 Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more.

4:2 For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.

4:3 It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality;

4:4 that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable,

4:5 not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God;

4:6 and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you.

4:7 For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.

4:8 Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.

4:9 Now about brotherly love we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other.

4:10 And in fact, you do love all the brothers throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers, to do so more and more.

4:11 Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you,

4:12 so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.

4:13 Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope.

4:14 We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.

4:15 According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.

4:16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.

4:17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.

4:18 Therefore encourage each other with these words.

Daniel 3.

3:1 King Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold, ninety feet high and nine feet wide, and set it up on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon.

3:2 He then summoned the satraps, prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates and all the other provincial officials to come to the dedication of the image he had set up.

3:3 So the satraps, prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates and all the other provincial officials assembled for the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up, and they stood before it.

3:4 Then the herald loudly proclaimed, "This is what you are commanded to do, O peoples, nations and men of every language:

3:5 As soon as you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes and all kinds of music, you must fall down and worship the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up.

3:6 Whoever does not fall `own and worship will immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace."

3:7 Therefore, as soon as they heard the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp and all kinds of music, all the peoples( nations and men of every language fell down and worshiped the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

3:8 At this time some astrologers came forward and denounced the Jews.

3:9 They said to King Nebuchadnezzar, "O king, live forever!

3:10 You have issued a decree, O king, that everyone who hears the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes and all kinds of music mqst fall down and worship the image of gold,

3:11 and that whoever does not fall down and worship will be thrown into a blazing furnace.

3:12 But there are some Jews whom you have set over the affairs of the province of Babylon--Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego--who pay no attention to you, O king. They neither serve your gods nor worship the image of gold you have set up."

3:13 Furious with rage, Nebuchadnezzar summoned Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. So these men were brought before the king,

3:14 and Nebuchadnezzar said to them, "Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods or worship the image of gold I have set up?

3:15 Now when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes and all kinds of music, if you are ready to fall down and worship the image I made, very good. But if you do not worship it, you will be thrown immediately into a blazing furnace. Then what god will be able to rescue you from my hand?"

3:16 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to the king, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter.

3:17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king.

3:18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up."

3:19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and his attitude toward them changed. He ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual

3:20 and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and throw them into the blazing furnace.

3:21 So these men, wearing their robes, trousers, turbans and other clothes, were bound and thrown into the blazing furnace.

3:22 The king's command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego,

3:23 and these three men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace.

3:24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, "Weren't there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?" They replied, "Certainly, O king."

3:25 He said, "Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods."

3:26 Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, "Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out! Come here!" So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire,

3:27 and the satraps, prefects, governors and royal advisers crowded around them. They saw that the fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them.

3:28 Then Nebuchadnezzar said, "Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel and rescued his servants! They trusted in him and defied the king's command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.

3:29 Therefore I decree that the people of any nation or language who say anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego be cut into pieces and their houses be turned into piles of rubble, for no other god can save in this way."

3:30 Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the province of Babylon.

Psalms 107.

107:1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.

107:2 Let the redeemed of the LORD say this--those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,

107:3 those he gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south.

107:4 Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no way to a city where they could settle.

107:5 They were hungry and thirsty, and their lives ebbed away.

107:6 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.

107:7 He led them by a straight way to a city where they could settle.

107:8 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men,

107:9 for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.

107:10 Some sat in darkness and the deepest gloom, prisoners suffering in iron chains,

107:11 for they had rebelled against the words of God and despised the counsel of the Most High.

107:12 So he subjected them to bitter labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help.

107:13 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.

107:14 He brought them out of darkness and the deepest gloom and broke away their chains.

107:15 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men,

107:16 for he breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron.

107:17 Some became fools through their rebellious ways and suffered affliction because of their iniquities.

107:18 They loathed all food and drew near the gates of death.

107:19 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.

107:20 He sent forth his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave.

107:21 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men.

107:22 Let them sacrifice thank offerings and tell of his works with songs of joy.

107:23 Others went out on the sea in ships; they were merchants on the mighty waters.

107:24 They saw the works of the LORD, his wonderful deeds in the deep.

107:25 For he spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted high the waves.

107:26 They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths; in their peril their courage melted away.

107:27 They reeled and staggered like drunken men; they were at their wits' end.

107:28 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress.

107:29 He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed.

107:30 They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven.

107:31 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men.

107:32 Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the council of the elders.

107:33 He turned rivers into a desert, flowing springs into thirsty ground,

107:34 and fruitful land into a salt waste, because of the wickedness of those who lived there.

107:35 He turned the desert into pools of water and the parched ground into flowing springs;

107:36 there he brought the hungry to live, and they founded a city where they could settle.

107:37 They sowed fields and planted vineyards that yielded a fruitful harvest;

107:38 he blessed them, and their numbers greatly increased, and he did not let their herds diminish.

107:39 Then their numbers decreased, and they were humbled by oppression, calamity and sorrow;

107:40 he who pours contempt on nobles made them wander in a trackless waste.

107:41 But he lifted the needy out of their affliction and increased their families like flocks.

107:42 The upright see and rejoice, but all the wicked shut their mouths.

107:43 Whoever is wise, let him heed these things and consider the great love of the LORD.
