역대상 19 장.

대상19:1 그 후에 암몬 자손의 왕 나하스가 죽고 그의 아들이 대신하여 왕이 되니

대상19:2 다윗이 이르되 하눈의 아버지 나하스가 전에 내게 호의를 베풀었으니 이제 내가 그의 아들 하눈에게 호의를 베풀리라 하고 사절들을 보내서 그의 아버지 죽음을 문상하게 하니라 다윗의 신하들이 암몬 자손의 땅에 이르러 하눈에게 나아가 문상하매

대상19:3 암몬 자손의 방백들이 하눈에게 말하되 왕은 다윗이 조문사절을 보낸 것이 왕의 부친을 존경함인 줄로 여기시나이까 그의 신하들이 왕에게 나아온 것이 이 땅을 엿보고 정탐하여 전복시키고자 함이 아니니이까 하는지라

대상19:4 하눈이 이에 다윗의 신하들을 잡아 그들의 수염을 깎고 그 의복을 볼기 중간까지 자르고 돌려보내매

대상19:5 어떤 사람이 다윗에게 가서 그 사람들이 당한 일을 말하니라 그 사람들이 심히 부끄러워하므로 다윗이 그들을 맞으러 보내 왕이 이르기를 너희는 수염이 자라기까지 여리고에 머물다가 돌아오라 하니라

대상19:6 암몬 자손이 자기가 다윗에게 밉게 한 줄 안지라 하눈과 암몬 자손은 더불어 은 천 달란트를 아람 나하라임과 아람마아가와 소바에 보내 병거와 마병을 삯 내되

대상19:7 곧 병거 삼만 이천 대와 마아가 왕과 그의 군대를 고용하였더니 그들이 와서 메드바 앞에 진치매 암몬 자손이 그 모든 성읍으로부터 모여 와서 싸우려 한지라

대상19:8 다윗이 듣고 요압과 용사의 온 무리를 보냈더니

대상19:9 암몬 자손은 나가서 성문 앞에 진을 치고 도우러 온 여러 왕은 따로 들에 있더라

대상19:10 요압이 앞 뒤에 친 적진을 보고 이스라엘에서 뽑은 자 중에서 또 뽑아 아람 사람을 대하여 진을 치고

대상19:11 그 남은 무리는 그의 아우 아비새의 수하에 맡겨 암몬 자손을 대하여 진을 치게 하고

대상19:12 이르되 만일 아람 사람이 나보다 강하면 네가 나를 돕고 만일 암몬 자손이 너보다 강하면 내가 너를 도우리라

대상19:13 너는 힘을 내라 우리가 우리 백성과 우리 하나님의 성읍들을 위하여 힘을 내자 여호와께서 선히 여기시는 대로 행하시기를 원하노라 하고

대상19:14 요압과 그 추종자가 싸우려고 아람 사람 앞에 나아가니 그들이 그 앞에서 도망하고

대상19:15 암몬 자손은 아람 사람이 도망함을 보고 그들도 요압의 아우 아비새 앞에서 도망하여 성읍으로 들어간지라 이에 요압이 예루살렘으로 돌아오니라

대상19:16 아람 사람이 자기가 이스라엘 앞에서 패하였음을 보고 사신을 보내 강 건너편에 있는 아람 사람을 불러내니 하닷에셀의 군대 사령관 소박이 그들을 거느린지라

대상19:17 어떤 사람이 다윗에게 전하매 다윗이 온 이스라엘을 모으고 요단을 건너 아람 사람에게 이르러 그들을 향하여 진을 치니라 다윗이 아람 사람을 향하여 진을 치매 그들이 다윗과 맞서 싸우더니

대상19:18 아람 사람이 이스라엘 앞에서 도망한지라 다윗이 아람 병거 칠천 대의 군사와 보병 사만 명을 죽이고 또 군대 지휘관 소박을 죽이매

대상19:19 하닷에셀의 부하들이 자기가 이스라엘 앞에서 패하였음을 보고 다윗과 더불어 화친하여 섬기고 그 후로는 아람 사람이 암몬 자손 돕기를 원하지 아니하였더라

역대상 20 장.

대상20:1 해가 바뀌어 왕들이 출전할 때가 되매 요압이 그 군대를 거느리고 나가서 암몬 자손의 땅을 격파하고 들어가 랍바를 에워싸고 다윗은 예루살렘에 그대로 있더니 요압이 랍바를 쳐서 함락시키매

대상20:2 다윗이 그 왕의 머리에서 보석 있는 왕관을 빼앗아 중량을 달아보니 금 한 달란트라 그들의 왕관을 자기 머리에 쓰니라 다윗이 또 그 성에서 노략한 물건을 무수히 내오고

대상20:3 그 가운데 백성을 끌어내어 톱과 쇠도끼와 돌써래로 일하게 하니라 다윗이 암몬 자손의 모든 성읍을 이같이 하고 다윗이 모든 백성과 함께 예루살렘으로 돌아오니라

대상20:4 이 후에 블레셋 사람들과 게셀에서 전쟁할 때에 후사 사람 십브개가 키가 큰 자의 아들 중에 십배를 쳐죽이매 그들이 항복하였더라

대상20:5 다시 블레셋 사람들과 전쟁할 때에 야일의 아들 엘하난이 가드 사람 골리앗의 아우 라흐미를 죽였는데 이 사람의 창자루는 베틀채 같았더라

대상20:6 또 가드에서 전쟁할 때에 그 곳에 키 큰 자 하나는 손과 발에 가락이 여섯씩 모두 스물넷이 있는데 그도 키가 큰 자의 소생이라

대상20:7 그가 이스라엘을 보복하므로 다윗의 형 시므아의 아들 요나단이 그를 죽이니라

대상20:8 가드의 키 큰 자의 소생이라도 다윗의 손과 그 신하의 손에 다 죽었더라

베드로전서 1 장.

벧전1:1 예수 그리스도의 사도 베드로는 본도, 갈라디아, 갑바도기아, 아시아와 비두니아에 흩어진 나그네

벧전1:2 곧 하나님 아버지의 미리 아심을 따라 성령이 거룩하게 하심으로 순종하고 예수 그리스도의 피 뿌림을 얻기 위하여 택하심을 받은 자들에게 편지하노니 은혜와 평강이 너희에게 더욱 많을지어다

벧전1:3 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 아버지 하나님을 찬송하리로다 그의 많으신 긍휼대로 예수 그리스도를 죽은 자 가운데서 부활하게 하심으로 말미암아 우리를 거듭나게 하사 산 소망이 있게 하시며

벧전1:4 썩지 않고 더럽지 않고 쇠하지 아니하는 유업을 잇게 하시나니 곧 너희를 위하여 하늘에 간직하신 것이라

벧전1:5 너희는 말세에 나타내기로 예비하신 구원을 얻기 위하여 믿음으로 말미암아 하나님의 능력으로 보호하심을 받았느니라

벧전1:6 그러므로 너희가 이제 여러 가지 시험으로 말미암아 잠깐 근심하게 되지 않을 수 없으나 오히려 크게 기뻐하는도다

벧전1:7 너희 믿음의 확실함은 불로 연단하여도 없어질 금보다 더 귀하여 예수 그리스도께서 나타나실 때에 칭찬과 영광과 존귀를 얻게 할 것이니라

벧전1:8 예수를 너희가 보지 못하였으나 사랑하는도다 이제도 보지 못하나 믿고 말할 수 없는 영광스러운 즐거움으로 기뻐하니

벧전1:9 믿음의 결국 곧 영혼의 구원을 받음이라

벧전1:10 이 구원에 대하여는 너희에게 임할 은혜를 예언하던 선지자들이 연구하고 부지런히 살펴서

벧전1:11 자기 속에 계신 그리스도의 영이 그 받으실 고난과 후에 받으실 영광을 미리 증언하여 누구를 또는 어떠한 때를 지시하시는지 상고하니라

벧전1:12 이 섬긴 바가 자기를 위한 것이 아니요 너희를 위한 것임이 계시로 알게 되었으니 이것은 하늘로부터 보내신 성령을 힘입어 복음을 전하는 자들로 이제 너희에게 알린 것이요 천사들도 살펴 보기를 원하는 것이니라

벧전1:13 그러므로 너희 마음의 허리를 동이고 근신하여 예수 그리스도께서 나타나실 때에 너희에게 가져다 주실 은혜를 온전히 바랄지어다

벧전1:14 너희가 순종하는 자식처럼 전에 알지 못할 때에 따르던 너희 사욕을 본받지 말고

벧전1:15 오직 너희를 부르신 거룩한 이처럼 너희도 모든 행실에 거룩한 자가 되라

벧전1:16 기록되었으되 내가 거룩하니 너희도 거룩할지어다 하셨느니라

벧전1:17 외모로 보시지 않고 각 사람의 행위대로 판단하시는 이를 너희가 아버지라 부른즉 너희가 나그네로 있을 때를 두려움으로 지내라

벧전1:18 너희가 알거니와 너희 조상이 물려준 헛된 행실에서 대속함을 받은 것은 은이나 금 같이 없어질 것으로 된 것이 아니요

벧전1:19 오직 흠 없고 점 없는 어린 양 같은 그리스도의 보배로운 피로 된 것이니라

벧전1:20 그는 창세 전부터 미리 알린 바 된 이나 이 말세에 너희를 위하여 나타내신 바 되었으니

벧전1:21 너희는 그를 죽은 자 가운데서 살리시고 영광을 주신 하나님을 그리스도로 말미암아 믿는 자니 너희 믿음과 소망이 하나님께 있게 하셨느니라

벧전1:22 너희가 진리를 순종함으로 너희 영혼을 깨끗하게 하여 거짓이 없이 형제를 사랑하기에 이르렀으니 마음으로 뜨겁게 서로 사랑하라

벧전1:23 너희가 거듭난 것은 썩어질 씨로 된 것이 아니요 썩지 아니할 씨로 된 것이니 살아 있고 항상 있는 하나님의 말씀으로 되었느니라

벧전1:24 그러므로 모든 육체는 풀과 같고 그 모든 영광은 풀의 꽃과 같으니 풀은 마르고 꽃은 떨어지되

벧전1:25 오직 주의 말씀은 세세토록 있도다 하였으니 너희에게 전한 복음이 곧 이 말씀이니라

요나 3 장.

욘3:1 여호와의 말씀이 두 번째로 요나에게 임하니라 이르시되

욘3:2 일어나 저 큰 성읍 니느웨로 가서 내가 네게 명한 바를 그들에게 선포하라 하신지라

욘3:3 요나가 여호와의 말씀대로 일어나서 니느웨로 가니라 니느웨는 사흘 동안 걸을 만큼 하나님 앞에 큰 성읍이더라

욘3:4 요나가 그 성읍에 들어가서 하루 동안 다니며 외쳐 이르되 사십 일이 지나면 니느웨가 무너지리라 하였더니

욘3:5 니느웨 사람들이 하나님을 믿고 금식을 선포하고 높고 낮은 자를 막론하고 굵은 베 옷을 입은 지라

욘3:6 그 일이 니느웨 왕에게 들리매 왕이 보좌에서 일어나 왕복을 벗고 굵은 베 옷을 입고 재 위에 앉으니라

욘3:7 왕과 그의 대신들이 조서를 내려 니느웨에 선포하여 이르되 사람이나 짐승이나 소 떼나 양 떼나 아무것도 입에 대니 말지니 곧 먹지도 말 것이요 물도 마시지 말 것이며

욘3:8 사람이든지 짐승이든지 다 굵은 베 옷을 입을 것이요 힘써 하나님께 부르짖을 것이며 각기 악한 길과 손으로 행한 강포에서 떠날 것이라

욘3:9 하나님이 뜻을 돌이키시고 그 진노를 그치사 우리가 멸망하지 않게 하시리라 그렇지 않을 줄을 누가 알겠느냐 한지라

욘3:10 하나님이 그들이 행한 것 곧 그 악한 길에서 돌이켜 떠난 것을 보시고 하나님이 뜻을 돌이키사 그들에게 내리리라고 말씀하신 재앙을 내리지 아니하시니라

누가복음 8 장.

눅8:1 그 후에 예수께서 각 성과 마을에 두루 다니시며 하나님의 나라를 선포하시며 그 복음을 전하실새 열두 제자가 함께 하였고

눅8:2 또한 악귀를 쫓아내심과 병 고침을 받은 어떤 여자들 곧 일곱 귀신이 나간 자 막달라인이라 하는 마리아와

눅8:3 헤롯의 청지기 구사의 아내 요안나와 수산나와 다른 여러 여자가 함께하여 자기들의 소유로 그들을 섬기더라

눅8:4 각 동네 사람들이 예수께로 나아와 큰 무리를 이루니 예수께서 비유로 말씀하시되

눅8:5 씨를 뿌리는 자가 그 씨를 뿌리러 나가서 뿌릴새 더러는 길가에 떨어지매 밟히며 공중의 새들이 먹어버렸고

눅8:6 더러는 바위 위에 떨어지매 났다가 습기가 없으므로 말랐고

눅8:7 더러는 가시떨기 속에 떨어지매 가시가 함께 자라서 기운을 막았고

눅8:8 더러는 좋은 땅에 떨어지매 나서 백 배의 결실을 하였느니라 이 말씀을 하시고 외치시되 들을 귀 있는 자는 들을지어다

눅8:9 제자들이 이 비유의 뜻을 물으니

눅8:10 이르시되 하나님 나라의 비밀을 아는 것이 너희에게는 허락되었으나 다른 사람에게는 비유로 하나니 이는 그들로 보아도 보지 못하고 들어도 깨닫지 못하게 하려 함이라

눅8:11 이 비유는 이러하니라 씨는 하나님의 말씀이요

눅8:12 길가에 있다는 것은 말씀을 들은 자니 이에 마귀가 가서 그들이 믿어 구원을 얻지 못하게 하려고 말씀을 그 마음에서 빼앗는 것이요

눅8:13 바위 위에 있다는 것은 말씀을 들을 때에 기쁨으로 받으나 뿌리가 없어 잠깐 믿다가 시련을 당할 때에 배반하는 자요

눅8:14 가시떨기에 떨어졌다는 것은 말씀을 들은 자이나 지내는 중 이생의 염려와 재물과 향락에 기운이 막혀 온전히 결실치 못하는 자요

눅8:15 좋은 땅에 있다는 것은 착하고 좋은 마음으로 말씀을 듣고 지키어 인내로 결실하는 자니라

눅8:16 누구든지 등불을 켜서 그릇으로 덮거나 평상 아래에 두지 아니하고 등경 위에 두나니 이는 들어가는 자들로 그 빛을 보게 하려 함이라

눅8:17 숨은 것이 장차 드러나지 아니 할 것이 없고 감추인 것이 장차 알려지고 나타나지 않을 것이 없느니라

눅8:18 그러므로 너희가 어떻게 들을까 스스로 삼가라 누구든지 있는 자는 받겠고 없는 자는 그 있는 줄로 아는 것까지도 빼앗기리라 하시니라

눅8:19 예수의 어머니와 그 동생들이 왔으나 무리로 인하여 가까이 하지 못하니

눅8:20 어떤 이가 알리되 당신의 어머니와 동생들이 당신을 보려고 밖에 서있나이다

눅8:21 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 내 어머니와 내 동생들은 곧 하나님의 말씀을 듣고 행하는 이 사람들이라 하시니라

눅8:22 하루는 제자들과 함께 배에 오르사 그들에게 이르시되 호수 저편으로 건너가자 하시매 이에 떠나

눅8:23 행선할 때에 예수께서 잠이 드셨더니 마침 광풍이 호수로 내리치매 배에 물이 가득하게 되어 위태한지라

눅8:24 제자들이 나아와 깨워 이르되 주여 주여 우리가 죽겠나이다 한대 예수께서 잠을 깨사 바람과 물결을 꾸짖으시니 이에 그쳐 잔잔하여지더라

눅8:25 제자들에게 이르시되 너희 믿음이 어디 있느냐 하시니 그들이 두려워하고 놀랍게 여겨 서로 말하되 그가 누구이기에 바람과 물을 명하매 순종하는가 하더라

눅8:26 그들이 갈릴리 맞은편 거라사인의 땅에 이르러

눅8:27 예수께서 육지에 내리시매 그 도시 사람으로서 귀신들린 자 하나가 예수를 만나니 그 사람은 오래 옷을 입지 아니하며 집에 거하지도 아니하고 무덤 사이에 거하는 자라

눅8:28 예수를 보고 부르짖으며 그 앞에 엎드려 큰 소리로 불러 이르되 지극히 높으신 하나님의 아들 예수여 당신이 나와 무슨 상관이 있나이까 당신께 구하노니 나를 괴롭게 하지 마옵소서 하니

눅8:29 이는 예수께서 이미 더러운 귀신을 명하사 이 사람에게서 나오라 하셨음이라 (귀신이 가끔 그 사람을 붙잡으므로 그를 쇠사슬과 고랑에 매어 지켰으되 그 맨 것을 끊고 귀신에게 몰려 광야로 나갔더라)

눅8:30 예수께서 네 이름이 무엇이냐 물으신즉 이르되 군대라 하니 이는 많은 귀신이 들렸음이라

눅8:31 무저갱으로 들어가라 하지 마시기를 간구하더니

눅8:32 마침 그 곳에 많은 돼지 떼가 산에서 먹고 있는지라 귀신들이 그 돼지에게로 들어가게 허락하심을 간구하니 이에 허락하시니

눅8:33 귀신들이 그 사람에게서 나와 돼지에게로 들어가니 그 떼가 비탈로 내리달아 호수에 들어가 몰사하거늘

눅8:34 치던 자들이 그 이루어진 일을 보고 도망하여 성내와 마을에 알리니

눅8:35 사람들이 그 이루어진 일을 보러 나와서 예수께 이르러 귀신 나간 사람이 옷을 입고 정신이 온전하여 예수의 발치에 앉아 있는 것을 보고 두려워하거늘

눅8:36 귀신들렸던 자가 어떻게 구원 받았는지를 본 자들이 그들에게 이르매

눅8:37 거라사인의 땅 근방 모든 백성이 크게 두려워하여 예수께 떠나가시기를 구하더라 예수께서 배에 올라 돌아가실새

눅8:38 귀신 나간 사람이 함께 있기를 구하였으나 예수께서 그를 보내시며 이르시되

눅8:39 집으로 돌아가 하나님이 네게 어떻게 큰 일을 행하셨는지를 말하라 하시니 그가 가서 예수께서 자기에게 어떻게 큰 일을 행하셨는지를 온 성내에 전파하니라

눅8:40 예수께서 돌아오시매 무리가 환영하니 이는 다 기다렸음이러라

눅8:41 이에 회당장인 야이로라 하는 사람이 와서 예수의 발 아래에 엎드려 자기 집에 오시기를 간구하니

눅8:42 이는 자기에게 열두 살 된 외딸이 있어 죽어감이러라 예수께서 가실 때에 무리가 밀려들더라

눅8:43 이에 열두 해를 혈루증으로 앓는 중에 아무에게도 고침을 받지 못하던 여자가

눅8:44 예수의 뒤로 와서 그 옷 가에 손을 대니 혈루증이 즉시 그쳤더라

눅8:45 예수께서 이르시되 내게 손을 댄 자가 누구냐 하시니 다 아니라 할 때에 베드로가 이르되 주여 무리가 밀려들어 미나이다

눅8:46 예수께서 이르시되 내게 손을 댄 자가 있도다 이는 내게서 능력이 나간 줄 앎이로다 하신대

눅8:47 여자가 스스로 숨기지 못할 줄 알고 떨며 나아와 엎드리어 그 손 댄 이유와 곧 나은 것을 모든 사람 앞에서 말하니

눅8:48 예수께서 이르시되 딸아 네 믿음이 너를 구원하였으니 평안히 가라 하시더라

눅8:49 아직 말씀하실 때에 회당장의 집에서 사람이 와서 말하되 당신의 딸이 죽었나이다 선생을 더 괴롭게 하지 마소서 하거늘

눅8:50 예수께서 들으시고 이르시되 두려워하지 말고 믿기만 하라 그리하면 딸이 구원을 얻으리라 하시고

눅8:51 그 집에 이르러 베드로와 요한과 야고보와 아이의 부모 외에는 함께 들어가기를 허락하지 아니하시니라

눅8:52 모든 사람이 아이를 위하여 울며 통곡하매 예수께서 이르시되 울지 말라 죽은 것이 아니라 잔다 하시니

눅8:53 그들이 그 죽은 것을 아는 고로 비웃더라

눅8:54 예수께서 아이의 손을 잡고 불러 이르시되 아이야 일어나라 하시니

눅8:55 그 영이 돌아와 아이가 곧 일어나거늘 예수께서 먹을 것을 주라 명하시니

눅8:56 그 부모가 놀라는지라 예수께서 경고하사 이 일을 아무에게도 말하지 말라 하시니라

1 Chronicles 19.

19:1 In the course of time, Nahash king of the Ammonites died, and his son succeeded him as king.

19:2 David thought, "I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me." So David sent a delegation to express his sympathy to Hanun concerning his father. When David's men came to Hanun in the land of the Ammonites to express sympathy to him,

19:3 the Ammonite nobles said to Hanun, "Do you think David is honoring your father by sending men to you to express sympathy? Haven't his men come to you to explore and spy out the country and overthrow it?"

19:4 So Hanun seized David's men, shaved them, cut off their garments in the middle at the buttocks, and sent them away.

19:5 When someone came and told David about the men, he sent messengers to meet them, for they were greatly humiliated. The king said, "Stay at Jericho till your beards have grown, and then come back."

19:6 When the Ammonites realized that they had become a stench in David's nostrils, Hanun and the Ammonites sent a thousand talents of silver to hire chariots and charioteers from Aram Naharaim, Aram Maacah and Zobah.

19:7 They hired thirty-two thousand chariots and charioteers, as well as the king of Maacah with his troops, who came and camped near Medeba, while the Ammonites were mustered from their towns and moved out for battle.

19:8 On hearing this, David sent Joab out with the entire army of fighting men.

19:9 The Ammonites came out and drew up in battle formation at the entrance to their city, while the kings who had come were by themselves in the open country.

19:10 Joab saw that there were battle lines in front of him and behind him; so he selected some of the best troops in Israel and deployed them against the Arameans.

19:11 He put the rest of the men under the command of Abishai his brother, and they were deployed against the Ammonites.

19:12 Joab said, "If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you are to rescue me; but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will rescue you.

19:13 Be strong and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. The LORD will do what is good in his sight."

19:14 Then Joab and the troops!with him advanced to fight the Arameans, and they fled before him.

19:15 When the Ammonites saw that the Arameans were fleeing, they too fled before his brother Abishai and went inside the city. So Joab went back to Jerusalem.

19:16 After the Arameans saw that they had been routed by Israel, they sent messengers and had Arameans brought from beyond the River, with Shophach the commander of Hadadezer's army leading them.

19:17 When David was told of this, he gathered all Israel and crossed the Jordan; he advanced against them and formed his battle lines opposite them. David formed his lines to meet the Arameans in battle, and they fought against him.

19:18 But they fled before Israel, and David killed seven thousand of their charioteers and forty thousand of their foot soldiers. He also killed Shophach the commander of their army.

19:19 When the vassals of Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with David and became subject to him. So the Arameans were not willing to help the Ammonites anymore.

1 Chronicles 20.

20:1 In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, Joab led out the armed forces. He laid waste the land of the Ammonites and went to Rabbah and besieged it, but David remained in Jerusalem. Joab attacked Rabbah and left it in ruins.

20:2 David took the crown from the head of their king--its weight was found to be a talent of gold, and it was set with precious stones--and it was placed on David's head. He took a great quantity of plunder from the city

20:3 and brought out the people who were there, consigning them to labor with saws and with iron picks and axes. David did this to all the Ammonite towns. Then David and his entire army returned to Jerusalem.

20:4 In the course of time, war broke out with the Philistines, at Gezer. At that time Sibbecai the Hushathite killed Sippai, one of the descendants of the Rephaites, and the Philistines were subjugated.

20:5 In another battle with the Philistines, Elhanan son of Jair killed Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, who had a spear with a shaft like a weaver's rod.

20:6 In still another battle, which took place at Gath, there was a huge man with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot--twenty-four in all. He also was descended from Rapha.

20:7 When he taunted Israel, Jonathan son of Shimea, David's brother, killed him.

20:8 These were descendants of Rapha in Gath, and they fell at the hands of David and his men.

1 Peter 1.

1:1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To God's elect, strangers in the world, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia,

1:2 who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by his blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance.

1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

1:4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade--kept in heaven for you,

1:5 who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

1:6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.

1:7 These have come so that your faith--of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire--may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.

1:8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy,

1:9 for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

1:10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care,

1:11 trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.

1:12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.

1:13 Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed.

1:14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.

1:15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do;

1:16 for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."

1:17 Since you call on a Father who judges each man's work impartially, live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear.

1:18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers,

1:19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.

1:20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.

1:21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

1:22 Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart.

1:23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.

1:24 For, "All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall,

1:25 but the word of the Lord stands forever." And this is the word that was preached to you.

Jonah 3.

3:1 Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time:

3:2 "Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you."

3:3 Jonah obeyed the word of the LORD and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very important city--a visit required three days.

3:4 On the first day, Jonah started into the city. He proclaimed: "Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned."

3:5 The Ninevites believed God. They declared a fast, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.

3:6 When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust.

3:7 Then he issued a proclamation in Nineveh: "By the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let any man or beast, herd or flock, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink.

3:8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence.

3:9 Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish."

3:10 When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he had compassion and did not bring upon them the destruction he had threatened.

Luke 8.

8:1 After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him,

8:2 and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out;

8:3 Joanna the wife of Cuza, the manager of Herod's household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.

8:4 While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, he told this parable:

8:5 "A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the air ate it up.

8:6 Some fell on rock, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture.

8:7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants.

8:8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown." When he said this, he called out, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

8:9 His disciples asked him what this parable meant.

8:10 He said, "The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, "'though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.'

8:11 "This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God.

8:12 Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.

8:13 Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away.

8:14 The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life's worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature.

8:15 But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.

8:16 "No one lights a lamp and hides it in a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light.

8:17 For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open.

8:18 Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken from him."

8:19 Now Jesus' mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd.

8:20 Someone told him, "Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you."

8:21 He replied, "My mother and brothers are those who hear God's word and put it into practice."

8:22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's go over to the other side of the lake." So they got into a boat and set out.

8:23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.

8:24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Master, Master, we're going to drown!" He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm.

8:25 "Where is your faith?" he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, "Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him."

8:26 They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is across the lake from Galilee.

8:27 When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs.

8:28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don't torture me!"

8:29 For Jesus had commanded the evil spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.

8:30 Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" "Legion," he replied, because many demons had gone into him.

8:31 And they begged him repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.

8:32 A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into them, and he gave them permission.

8:33 When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.

8:34 When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside,

8:35 and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus' feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.

8:36 Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured.

8:37 Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left.

8:38 The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying,

8:39 "Return home and tell how much God has done for you." So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him.

8:40 Now when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him.

8:41 Then a man named Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, came and fell at Jesus' feet, pleading with him to come to his house

8:42 because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying. As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him.

8:43 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her.

8:44 She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped.

8:45 "Who touched me?" Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, "Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you."

8:46 But Jesus said, "Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me."

8:47 Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed.

8:48 Then he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace."

8:49 While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. "Your daughter is dead," he said. "Don't bother the teacher any more."

8:50 Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, "Don't be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed."

8:51 When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James, and the child's father and mother.

8:52 Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her. "Stop wailing," Jesus said. "She is not dead but asleep."

8:53 They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead.

8:54 But he took her by the hand and said, "My child, get up!"

8:55 Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat.

8:56 Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.
