역대하 16 장.

대하16:1 아사 왕 재삼십육년에 이스라엘 왕 바아사가 유다를 치러 올라와서 라마를 건축하여 사람을 유다 왕 아사에게 왕래하지 못하게 하려한지라

대하16:2 아사가 여호와의 전 곳간과 왕궁 곳간의 은금을 내어다가 다메섹에 사는 아람 왕 벤하닷에게 보내며 이르되

대하16:3 내 아버지와 당신의 아버지 사이에와 같이 나와 당신 사이에 약조하자 내가 당신에게 은금을 보내노니 와서 이스라엘 왕 바아사와 세운 약조를 깨뜨려 그가 나를 떠나게 하라 하매

대하16:4 벤하닷이 아사 왕의 말을 듣고 그의 군대 지휘관들을 보내어 이스라엘 성읍들을 치되 이욘과 단과 아벨마임과 납달리의 모든 국고성들을 쳤더니

대하16:5 바아사가 듣고 라마 건축하는 일을 포기하고 그 공사를 그친지라

대하16:6 아사 왕이 온 유다 무리를 거느리고 바아사가 라마를 건축하던 돌과 재목을 운반하여다가 게바와 미스바를 건축하였더라

대하16:7 그 때에 선견자 하나니가 유다 왕 아사에게 나와서 그에게 이르되 왕이 아람 왕을 의지하고 왕의 하나님 여호와를 의지하지 아니하였으므로 아람 왕의 군대가 왕의 손에서 벗어났나이다

대하16:8 구스 사람과 룹 사람의 군대가 크지 아니하며 말과 병거가 심히 많지 아니하더이까 그러나 왕이 여호와를 의지하였으므로 여호와께서 왕의 손에 넘기셨나이다

대하16:9 여호와의 눈은 온 땅을 두루 감찰하사 전심으로 자기에게 향하는 자들을 위하여 능력을 베푸시나니 이 일은 왕이 망령되이 행하였은즉 이 후부터는 왕에게 전쟁이 있으리이다 하매

대하16:10 아사가 노하여 선견자를 옥에 가두었으니 이는 그의 말에 크게 노하였음이며 그 때에 아사가 또 백성 중에서 몇 사람을 학대하였더라

대하16:11 아사의 처음부터 끝까지의 행적은 유다와 이스라엘 열왕기에 기록되니라

대하16:12 아사가 왕이 된 지 삼십 구 년에 그의 발이 병들어 매우 위독했으나 병이 있을 때에 그가 여호와께 구하지 아니하고 의원들에게 구하였더라

대하16:13 아사가 왕위에 있은 지 사십일 년 후에 죽어 그의 조상들과 함께 누우매

대하16:14 다윗 성에 자기를 위하여 파 두었던 묘실에 무리가 장사하되 그의 시체를 법대로 만든 각양 향 재료를 가득히 채운 상에 두고 또 그것을 위하여 많이 분향하였더라

요한계시록 5 장.

계5:1 내가 보매 보좌에 앉으신 이의 오른손에 두루마리가 있으니 안팎으로 썼고 일곱 인으로 봉하였더라

계5:2 또 보매 힘있는 천사가 큰 음성으로 외치기를 누가 그 두루마리를 펴며 그 인을 떼기에 합당하냐 하나

계5:3 하늘 위에나 땅 위에나 땅 아래에 능히 그 두루마리를 펴거나 보거나 할 자가 없더라

계5:4 그 두루마리를 펴거나 보거나 하기에 합당한 자가 보이지 아니하기로 내가 크게 울었더니

계5:5 장로 중의 한 사람이 내게 말하되 울지 말라 유대 지파의 사자 다윗의 뿌리가 이겼으니 그 두루마리와 그 일곱 인을 떼시리라 하더라

계5:6 내가 또 보니 보좌와 네 생물과 장로들 사이에서 한 어린 양이 서 있는데 일찍이 죽임을 당한 것 같더라 그에게 일곱 뿔과 일곱 눈이 있으니 이 눈들은 온 땅에 보내심을 받은 하나님의 일곱 영이더라

계5:7 그 어린 양이 나아와서 보좌에 앉으신 이의 오른손에서 두루마리를 취하시니라

계5:8 그 두루마리를 취하시매 네 생물과 이십사 장로들이 그 어린 양 앞에 엎드려 각각 거문고와 향이 가득한 금 대접을 가졌으니 이 향은 성도의 기도들이라

계5:9 그들이 새 노래를 불러 이르되 두루마리를 가지시고 그 인봉을 떼기에 합당하시도다 일찍이 죽임을 당하사 각 족속과 방언과 백성과 나라 가운데에서 사람들을 피로 사서 하나님께 드리시고

계5:10 그들로 우리 하나님 앞에서 나라와 제사장들을 삼으셨으니 그들이 땅에서 왕 노릇 하리로다 하더라

계5:11 내가 또 보고 들으매 보좌와 생물들과 장로들을 둘러 선 많은 천사의 음성이 있으니 그 수가 만만이요 천천이라

계5:12 큰 음성으로 이르되 죽임을 당하신 어린 양은 능력과 부와 지혜와 힘과 존귀와 영광과 찬송을 받으시기에 합당하도다 하더라

계5:13 내가 또 들으니 하늘 위에와 땅 위에와 땅 아래와 바다 위에와 또 그 가운데 모든 피조물이 이르되 보좌에 앉으신 이와 어린 양에게 찬송과 존귀와 영광과 권능을 세세토록 돌릴지어다 하니

계5:14 네 생물이 이르되 아멘 하고 장로들은 엎드려 경배하더라

스가랴 1 장.

슥1:1 다리오 왕 제이년 여덟째 달에 여호와의 말씀이 잇도의 손자 베레갸의 아들 선지자 스가랴에게 임하니라 이르시되

슥1:2 나 여호와가 너희의 조상들에게 심히 진노하였느니라

슥1:3 그러므로 너는 무리에게 고하기를 만군의 여호와께서 이처럼 이르시되 너희는 내게로 돌아오라 만군의 여호와의 말이니라 그리하면 내가 너희에게로 돌아가리라 만군의 여호와의 말이니라

슥1:4 너희 조상들을 본받지 말라 옛적 선지자들이 그들에게 외쳐 이르되 만군의 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하시기를 너희가 악한 길, 악한 행위를 떠나서 돌아오라 하셨으나 그들이 듣지 아니하고 내게 귀를 기울이지 아니하였느니라 여호와의 말이니라

슥1:5 너희 조상들이 어디 있느냐 또 선지자들이 영원히 살겠느냐

슥1:6 내가 나의 종 선지자들에게 명령한 내 말과 내 법도들이 어찌 너희 조상들에게 임하지 아니하였느냐 그러므로 그들이 돌이켜 이르기를 만군의 여호와께서 우리 길대로, 우리 행위대로 우리에게 행하시려고 뜻하신 것을 우리에게 행하셨도다 하였느니라

슥1:7 다리오 왕 제이년 열한째 달 곧 스밧월 이십사일에 잇도의 손자 베레갸의 아들 선지자 스가랴에게 여호와의 말씀이 임하니라

슥1:8 내가 밤에 보니 사람이 붉은 말을 타고 골짜기 속 화석류나무 사이에 섰고 그 뒤에는 홍마와 자줏빛 말과 백마가 있기로

슥1:9 내가 말하되 내 주여 이들이 무엇이니이까 내게 말하는 천사가 내게 이르되 이들이 무엇인지 내가 네게 보이리라 하니

슥1:10 화석류나무 사이에 선 자가 대답하여 이르되 이는 여호와께서 땅에 두루 다니라고 보내신 자들이니라

슥1:11 그들이 화석류나무 사이에 선 여호와의 천사에게 말하되 우리가 땅에 두루 다녀 보니 온 땅이 평안하고 조용하더이다 하더라

슥1:12 여호와의 천사가 대답하여 이르되 만군의 여호와여 여호와께서 언제까지 예루살렘과 유다 성읍들을 불쌍히 여기지 아니하시려하나이까 이를 노하신 지 칠십 년이 되었나이다 하매

슥1:13 여호와께서 내게 말하는 천사에게 선한 말씀, 위로하는 말씀으로 대답하시더라

슥1:14 내게 말하는 천사가 내게 이르되 너는 외쳐 이르기를 만군의 여호와의 말씀에 내가 예루살렘을 위하여 시온을 위하여 크게 질투하며

슥1:15 안일한 여러 나라들 때문에 심히 진노하나니 나는 조금 노하였거늘 그들은 힘을 내어 고난을 더하였음이라

슥1:16 그러므로 여호와가 이처럼 말하노라 내가 불쌍히 여기므로 예루살렘에 돌아왔은즉 내 집이 그 가운데에 건축되리니 예루살렘 위에 먹줄이 쳐지리라 만군의 여호와의 말이니라

슥1:17 그가 다시 외쳐 이르기를 만군의 여호와의 말씀에 나의 성읍들이 넘치도록 다시 풍부할 것이라 여호와가 다시 시온을 위로하며 다시 예루살렘을 택하리라 하라 하니라

슥1:18 내가 눈을 들어 본즉 네 개의 뿔이 보이기로

슥1:19 이에 내게 말하는 천사에게 묻되 이들이 무엇이니이까 하니 내게 대답하되 이들은 유다와 이스라엘과 예루살렘을 흩뜨린 뿔이니라

슥1:20 그 때에 여호와께서 대장장이 네 명을 내게 보이시기로

슥1:21 내가 말하되 그들이 무엇하러 왔나이까 하니 대답하여 이르시되 그 뿔들이 유다를 흩뜨려서 사람들이 능히 머리를 들지 못하게 하니 이 대장장이들이 와서 그것들을 두렵게 하고 이전의 뿔들을 들어 유다 땅을 흩뜨린 여러 나라의 뿔들을 떨어뜨리려 하느니라 하시더라

요한복음 4 장.

요4:1 예수께서 제자를 삼고 세례를 베푸시는 것이 요한보다 많다 하는 말을 바리새인들이 들은 줄을 주께서 아신지라

요4:2 (예수께서 친히 세례를 베푸신 것이 아니요 제자들이 베푼 것이라)

요4:3 유대를 떠나사 다시 갈릴리로 가실새

요4:4 사마리아를 통과하여야 하겠는지라

요4:5 사마리아에 있는 수가라 하는 동네에 이르시니 야곱이 그 아들 요셉에게 준 땅이 가깝고

요4:6 거기 또 야곱의 우물이 있더라 예수께서 길 가시다가 피곤하여 우물 곁에 그대로 앉으시니 때가 여섯 시쯤 되었더라

요4:7 사마리아 여자 한 사람이 물을 길으러 왔으매 예수께서 물을 좀 달라하시니

요4:8 이는 제자들이 먹을 것을 사러 그 동네에 들어갔음이러라

요4:9 사마리아 여자가 이르되 당신은 유대인으로서 어찌하여 사마리아 여자인 나에게 물을 달라 하나이까 하니 이는 유대인이 사마리아인과 상종하지 아니함이러라

요4:10 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 네가 만일 하나님의 선물과 또 네게 물 좀 달라 하는 이가 누구인 줄 알았더라면 네가 그에게 구하였을 것이요 그가 생수를 네게 주었으리라

요4:11 여자가 이르되 주여 물 길을 그릇도 없고 이 우물은 깊은데 어디서 당신이 그 생수를 얻겠사옵나이까

요4:12 우리 조상 야곱이 이 우물을 우리에게 주셨고 또 여기서 자기와 자기 아들들과 짐승이 다 마셨는데 당신이 야곱보다 더 크니이까

요4:13 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 이 물을 마시는 자마다 다시 목마르려니와

요4:14 내가 주는 물을 마시는 자는 영원히 목마르지 아니하리니 내가 주는 물은 그 속에서 영생하도록 솟아나는 샘물이 되리라

요4:15 여자가 이르되 주여 그런 물을 내게 주사 목마르지도 않고 또 여기 물 길으러 오지도 않게 하옵소서

요4:16 이르시되 가서 네 남편을 불러 오라

요4:17 여자가 대답하여 이르되 나는 남편이 없나이다 예수께서 이르시되 네가 남편이 없다 하는 말이 옳도다

요4:18 너에게 남편 다섯이 있었고 지금 있는 자도 네 남편이 아니니 네 말이 참되도다

요4:19 여자가 이르되 주여 내가 보니 선지자로소이다

요4:20 우리 조상들은 이 산에서 예배하였는데 당신들의 말은 예배할 곳이 예루살렘에 있다 하더이다

요4:21 예수께서 이르시되 여자여 내 말을 믿으라 이 산에서도 말고 예루살렘에서도 말고 너희가 아버지께 예배할 때가 이르리라

요4:22 너희는 알지 못하는 것을 예배하고 우리는 아는 것을 예배하노니 이는 구원이 유대인에게서 남이라

요4:23 아버지께 참되게 예배하는 자들은 영과 진리로 예배할 때가 오나니 곧 이 때라 아버지께서는 자기에게 이렇게 예배하는 자들을 찾으시느니라

요4:24 하나님은 영이시니 예배하는 자가 영과 진리로 예배할지니라

요4:25 여자가 이르되 메시야 곧 그리스도라 하는 이가 오실 줄을 내가 아노니 그가 오시면 모든 것을 우리에게 알려 주시리이다

요4:26 예수께서 이르시되 네게 말하는 내가 그라 하시니라

요4:27 이 때에 제자들이 돌아와서 예수께서 여자와 말씀하시는 것을 이상히 여겼으나 무엇을 구하시나이까 어찌하여 그와 말씀하시나이까 묻는 자가 없더라

요4:28 여자가 물동이를 버려 두고 동네로 들어가서 사람들에게 이르되

요4:29 나의 행한 모든 일을 내게 말한 사람을 와서 보라 이는 그리스도가 아니냐 하니

요4:30 그들이 동네에서 나와 예수께로 오더라

요4:31 그 사이에 제자들이 청하여 이르되 랍비여 잡수소서

요4:32 이르시되 내게는 너희가 알지 못하는 먹을 양식이 있느니라

요4:33 제자들이 서로 말하되 누가 잡수실 것을 갖다 드렸는가 하니

요4:34 예수께서 이르시되 나의 양식은 나를 보내신 이의 뜻을 행하며 그의 일을 온전히 이루는 이것이니라

요4:35 너희는 넉 달이 지나야 추수할 때가 이르겠다 하지 아니하느냐 그러나 나는 너희에게 이르노니 너희 눈을 들어 밭을 보라 희어져 추수하게 되었도다

요4:36 거두는 자가 이미 삯도 받고 영생에 이르는 열매를 모으나니 이는 뿌리는 자와 거두는 자가 함께 즐거워하게 하려 함이라

요4:37 그런즉 한 사람이 심고 다른 사람이 거둔다 하는 말이 옳도다

요4:38 내가 너희로 노력하지 아니한 것을 거두러 보내었노니 다른 사람들은 노력하였고 너희는 그들이 노력한 것에 참여하였느니라

요4:39 여자의 말이 그가 내가 행한 모든 것을 내게 말하였다 증언하므로 그 동네 중에 많은 사마리아인이 예수를 믿는지라

요4:40 사마리아인들이 예수께 와서 자기들과 함께 유하시기를 청하니 거기서 이틀을 유하시매

요4:41 예수의 말씀으로 말미암아 믿는 자가 더욱 많아

요4:42 그 여자에게 말하되 이제 우리가 믿는 것은 네 말로 인함이 아니니 이는 우리가 친히 듣고 그가 참으로 세상의 구주신 줄 앎이라 하였더라

요4:43 이틀이 지나매 예수께서 거기를 떠나 갈릴리로 가시며

요4:44 친히 증언하시기를 선지자가 고향에서는 높임을 받지 못한다 하시고

요4:45 갈릴리에 이르시매 갈릴리인들이 그를 영접하니 이는 자기들도 명절에 갔다가 예수께서 명절 중 예루살렘에서 하신 모든 일을 보았음이더라

요4:46 예수께서 다시 갈릴리 가나에 이르시니 전에 물로 포도주를 만드신 곳이라 왕의 신하가 있어 그의 아들이 가버나움에서 병들었더니

요4:47 그가 예수께서 유대로부터 갈릴리로 오셨다는 것을 듣고 가서 청하되 내려오셔서 내 아들의 병을 고쳐 주소서 하니 그가 거의 죽게 되었음이라

요4:48 예수께서 이르시되 너희는 표적과 기사를 보지 못하면 도무지 믿지 아니하리라

요4:49 신하가 이르되 주여 내 아이가 죽기 전에 내려오소서

요4:50 예수께서 이르시되 가라 네 아들이 살아 있다 하시니 그 사람이 예수께서 하신 말씀을 믿고 가더니

요4:51 내려가는 길에서 그 종들이 오다가 만나서 아이가 살아 있다 하거늘

요4:52 그 낫기 시작한 때를 물은즉 어제 일곱 시에 열기가 떨어졌나이다 하는지라

요4:53 그의 아버지가 예수께서 네 아들이 살아 있다 말씀하신 그 때인 줄 알고 자기와 그 온 집안이 다 믿으니라

요4:54 이것은 예수께서 유대에서 갈릴리로 오신 후에 행하신 두번째 표적이니라

2 Chronicles 16.

16:1 In the thirty-sixth year of Asa's reign Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah and fortified Ramah to prevent anyone from leaving or entering the territory of Asa king of Judah.

16:2 Asa then took the silver and gold out of the treasuries of the LORD'S temple and of his own palace and sent it to Ben-Hadad king of Aram, who was ruling in Damascus.

16:3 "Let there be a treaty between me and you," he said, "as there was between my father and your father. See, I am sending you silver and gold. Now break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel so he will withdraw from me."

16:4 Ben-Hadad agreed with King Asa and sent the commanders of his forces against the towns of Israel. They conquered Ijon, Dan, Abel Maim and all the store cities of Naphtali.

16:5 When Baasha heard this, he stopped building Ramah and abandoned his work.

16:6 Then King Asa brought all the men of Judah, and they carried away from Ramah the stones and timber Baasha had been using. With them he built up Geba and Mizpah.

16:7 At that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah and said to him: "Because you relied on the king of Aram and not on the LORD your God, the army of the king of Aram has escaped from your hand.

16:8 Were not the Cushites and Libyans a mighty army with great numbers of chariots and horsemen? Yet when you relied on the LORD, he delivered them into your hand.

16:9 For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. You have done a foolish thing, and from now on you will be at war."

16:10 Asa was angry with the seer because of this; he was so enraged that he put him in prison. At the same time Asa brutally oppressed some of the people.

16:11 The events of Asa's reign, from beginning to end, are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.

16:12 In the thirty-ninth year of his reign Asa was afflicted with a disease in his feet. Though his disease was severe, even in his illness he did not seek help from the LORD, but only from the physicians.

16:13 Then in the forty-first year of his reign Asa died and rested with his fathers.

16:14 They buried him in the tomb that he had cut out for himself in the City of David. They laid him on a bier covered with spices and various blended perfumes, and they made a huge fire in his honor.

Revelation 5.

5:1 Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals.

5:2 And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, "Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?"

5:3 But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it.

5:4 I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside.

5:5 Then one of the elders said to me, "Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals."

5:6 Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing in the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. He had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth.

5:7 He came and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne.

5:8 And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.

5:9 And they sang a new song: "You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.

5:10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth."

5:11 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders.

5:12 In a loud voice they sang: "Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!"

5:13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, singing: "To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!"

5:14 The four living creatures said, "Amen," and the elders fell down and worshiped.

Zechariah 1.

1:1 In the eighth month of the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berekiah, the son of Iddo:

1:2 "The LORD was very angry with your forefathers.

1:3 Therefore tell the people: This is what the LORD Almighty says: 'Return to me,' declares the LORD Almighty, 'and I will return to you,' says the LORD Almighty.

1:4 Do not be like your forefathers, to whom the earlier prophets proclaimed: This is what the LORD Almighty says: 'Turn from your evil ways and your evil practices.' But they would not listen or pay attention to me, declares the LORD.

1:5 Where are your forefathers now? And the prophets, do they live forever?

1:6 But did not my words and my decrees, which I commanded my servants the prophets, overtake your forefathers? "Then they repented and said, 'The LORD Almighty has done to us what our ways and practices deserve, just as he determined to do.'"

1:7 On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, the month of Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berekiah, the son of Iddo.

1:8 During the night I had a vision--and there before me was a man riding a red horse! He was standing among the myrtle trees in a ravine. Behind him were red, brown and white horses.

1:9 I asked, "What are these, my lord?" The angel who was talking with me answered, "I will show you what they are."

1:10 Then the man standing among the myrtle trees explained, "They are the ones the LORD has sent to go throughout the earth."

1:11 And they reported to the angel of the LORD, who was standing among the myrtle trees, "We have gone throughout the earth and found the whole world at rest and in peace."

1:12 Then the angel of the LORD said, "LORD Almighty, how long will you withhold mercy from Jerusalem and from the towns of Judah, which you have been angry with these seventy years?"

1:13 So the LORD spoke kind and comforting words to the angel who talked with me.

1:14 Then the angel who was speaking to me said, "Proclaim this word: This is what the LORD Almighty says: 'I am very jealous for Jerusalem and Zion,

1:15 but I am very angry with the nations that feel secure. I was only a little angry, but they added to the calamity.'

1:16 "Therefore, this is what the LORD says: 'I will return to Jerusalem with mercy, and there my house will be rebuilt. And the measuring line wilh be stretched out over Jerusalem,' declares the LORD Almighty.

1:17 "Proclaim further: This is what the LORD Almighty says: 'My towns will again overflow with prosperity, and the LORD will again comfort Zion and choose Jerusalem.'"

1:18 Then I looked up--and there before me were four horns!

1:19 I asked the angel who was speaking to me, "What are these?" He answered me, "These are the horns that scattered Judah, Israel and Jerusalem."

1:20 Then the LORD showed me four craftsmen.

1:21 I asked, "What are these coming to do?" He answered, "These are the horns that scattered Judah so that no one could raise his head, but the craftsmen have come to terrify them and throw down these horns of the nations who lifted up their horns against the land of Judah to scatter its people."

John 4.

4:1 The Pharisees heard that Jesus was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John,

4:2 although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples.

4:3 When the Lord learned of this, he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee.

4:4 Now he had to go through Samaria.

4:5 So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph.

4:6 Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour.

4:7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, "Will you give me a drink?"

4:8 (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)

4:9 The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)

4:10 Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water."

4:11 "Sir," the woman said, "you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water?

4:12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?"

4:13 Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,

4:14 but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

4:15 The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water."

4:16 He told her, "Go, call your husband and come back."

4:17 "I have no husband," she replied. Jesus said to her, "You are right when you say you have no husband.

4:18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true."

4:19 "Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet.

4:20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem."

4:21 Jesus declared, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.

4:22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.

4:23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.

4:24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."

4:25 The woman said, "I know that Messiah" (called Christ) "is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us."

4:26 Then Jesus declared, "I who speak to you am he."

4:27 Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, "What do you want?" or "Why are you talking with her?"

4:28 Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people,

4:29 "Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?"

4:30 They came out of the town and made their way toward him.

4:31 Meanwhile his disciples urged him, "Rabbi, eat something."

4:32 But he said to them, "I have food to eat that you know nothing about."

4:33 Then his disciples said to each other, "Could someone have brought him food?"

4:34 "My food," said Jesus, "is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.

4:35 Do you not say, 'Four months more and then the harvest'? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.

4:36 Even now the reaper draws his wages, even now he harvests the crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together.

4:37 Thus the saying 'One sows and another reaps' is true.

4:38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor."

4:39 Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman's testimony, "He told me everything I ever did."

4:40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days.

4:41 And because of his words many more became believers.

4:42 They said to the woman, "We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world."

4:43 After the two days he left for Galilee.

4:44 (Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country.)

4:45 When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, for they also had been there.

4:46 Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum.

4:47 When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.

4:48 "Unless you people see miraculous signs and wonders," Jesus told him, "you will never believe."

4:49 The royal official said, "Sir, come down before my child dies."

4:50 Jesus replied, "You may go. Your son will live." The man took Jesus at his word and departed.

4:51 While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living.

4:52 When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, "The fever left him yesterday at the seventh hour."

4:53 Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, "Your son will live." So he and all his household believed.

4:54 This was the second miraculous sign that Jesus performed, having come from Judea to Galilee.
