전도서 (Ecclesiastes) 1 장.

Ecclesiastes 1

전1:1 다윗의 아들 예루살렘 왕 전도자의 말씀이라

The words of the Teacher, son of David, king in Jerusalem:

전1:2 전도자가 이르되 헛되고 헛되며 헛되고 헛되니 모든 것이 헛되도다

"Meaningless! Meaningless!" says the Teacher. "Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless."

전1:3 해 아래에서 수고하는 모든 수고가 사람에게 무엇이 유익한가

What does man gain from all his labor at which he toils under the sun?

전1:4 한 세대는 가고 한 세대는 오되 땅은 영원히 있도다

Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains forever.

전1:5 해는 뜨고 해는 지되 그 떴던 곳으로 빨리 돌아가고

The sun rises and the sun sets, and hurries back to where it rises.

전1:6 바람은 남으로 불다가 북으로 돌아가며 이리 돌며 저리 돌아 바람은 그 불던 곳으로 돌아가고

The wind blows to the south and turns to the north; round and round it goes, ever returning on its course.

전1:7 모든 강물은 다 바다로 흐르되 바다를 채우지 못하며 강물은 어느 곳으로 흐르든지 그리로 연하여 흐르느니라

All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full. To the place the streams come from, there they return again.

전1:8 모든 만물이 피곤하다는 것을 사람이 말로 다 말할 수는 없나니 눈은 보아도 족함이 없고 귀는 들어도 가득 차지 아니하도다

All things are wearisome, more than one can say. The eye never has enough of seeing, nor the ear its fill of hearing.

전1:9 이미 있던 것이 후에 다시 있겠고 이미 한 일을 후에 다시 할지라 해 아래에는 새 것이 없나니

What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.

전1:10 무엇을 가리켜 이르기를 보라 이것이 새 것이라 할 것이 있으랴 우리가 있기 오래 전 세대들에도 이미 있었느니라

Is there anything of which one can say, "Look! This is something new"? It was here already, long ago; it was here before our time.

전1:11 이전 세대들이 기억됨이 없으니 장래 세대도 그 후 세대들과 함께 기억됨이 없으리라

There is no remembrance of men of old, and even those who are yet to come will not be remembered by those who follow.

전1:12 나 전도자는 예루살렘에서 이스라엘 왕이 되어

I, the Teacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

전1:13 마음을 다하며 지혜를 써서 하늘 아래에서 행하는 모든 일을 연구하며 살핀즉 이는 괴로운 것이니 하나님이 인생들에게 주사 수고하게 하신 것이라

I devoted myself to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under heaven. What a heavy burden God has laid on men!

전1:14 내가 해 아래에서 행하는 모든 일을 보았노라 보라 모두 다 헛되어 바람을 잡으려는 것이로다

I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

전1:15 구부러진 것도 곧게 할 수 없고 모자란 것도 셀 수 없도다

What is twisted cannot be straightened; what is lacking cannot be counted.

전1:16 내가 내 마음 속으로 말하여 이르기를 보라 내가 크게 되고 지혜를 더 많이 얻었으므로 나보다 먼저 예루살렘에 있던 모든 사람들보다 낫다 하였나니 내 마음이 지혜와 지식을 많이 만나 보았음이로다

I thought to myself, "Look, I have grown and increased in wisdom more than anyone who has ruled over Jerusalem before me; I have experienced much of wisdom and knowledge."

전1:17 내가 다시 지혜를 알고자 하며 미친 것들과 미련한 것들을 알고자 하여 마음을 썼으나 이것도 바람을 잡으려는 것인 줄을 깨달았도다

Then I applied myself to the understanding of wisdom, and also of madness and folly, but I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the wind.

전1:18 지혜가 많으면 번뇌도 많으니 지식을 더하는 자는 근심을 더하느니라

For with much wisdom comes much sorrow; the more knowledge, the more grief.

전도서 (Ecclesiastes) 2 장.

Ecclesiastes 2

전2:1 내가 내 마음에 이르기를 자, 내가 시험삼아 너를 즐겁게 하리니 너는 낙을 누리라 하였으나 보라 이것도 헛되도다

I thought in my heart, "Come now, I will test you with pleasure to find out what is good." But that also proved to be meaningless.

전2:2 내가 웃음에 관하여 말하여 이르기를 그것은 미친 것이라 하였고 희락에 대하여 이르기를 이것이 무슨 소용이 있는가 하였노라

"Laughter," I said, "is foolish. And what does pleasure accomplish?"

전2:3 내가 내 마음으로 깊이 생각하기를 내가 어떻게 하여야 내 마음을 지혜로 다스리면서 술로 내 육신을 즐겁게 할까 또 내가 어떻게 하여야 천하의 인생들이 그들의 인생을 살아가는 동안 어떤 것이 선한 일인지를 알아볼 때까지 내 어리석음을 꼭 붙잡아 둘까하여

I tried cheering myself with wine, and embracing folly--my mind still guiding me with wisdom. I wanted to see what was worthwhile for men to do under heaven during the few days of their lives.

전2:4 나의 사업을 크게 하였노라 내가 나를 위하여 집들을 짓고 포도원을 일구며

I undertook great projects: I built houses for myself and planted vineyards.

전2:5 여러 동산과 과원을 만들고 그 가운데에 각종 과목을 심었으며

I made gardens and parks and planted all kinds of fruit trees in them.

전2:6 나를 위하여 수목을 기르는 삼림에 물을 주기 위하여 못들을 팠으며

I made reservoirs to water groves of flourishing trees.

전2:7 남녀 노비들을 사기도 하였고 나를 위하여 집에서 종들을 낳기도 하였으며 나보다 먼저 예루살렘에 있던 모든 자들보다도 내가 소와 양 떼의 소유를 더 많이 가졌으며

I bought male and female slaves and had other slaves who were born in my house. I also owned more herds and flocks than anyone in Jerusalem before me.

전2:8 은 금과 왕들이 소유한 보배와 여러 지방의 보배를 나를 위하여 쌓고 또 노래하는 남녀들과 인생들이 기뻐하는 처첩들을 많이 두었노라

I amassed silver and gold for myself, and the treasure of kings and provinces. I acquired men and women singers, and a harem as well--the delights of the heart of man.

전2:9 내가 이같이 창성하여 나보다 먼저 예루살렘에 있던 모든 자들보다 더 창성하니 내 지혜도 내게 여전하도다

I became greater by far than anyone in Jerusalem before me. In all this my wisdom stayed with me.

전2:10 무엇이든지 내 눈이 원하는 것을 내가 금하지 아니하며 무엇이든지 내 마음이 즐거워하는 것을 내가 막지 아니하였으니 이는 나의 모든 수고를 내 마음이 기뻐하였음이라 이것이 나의 모든 수고로 말미암아 얻은 몫이로다

I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my work, and this was the reward for all my labor.

전2:11 그 후에 내가 생각해 본즉 내 손으로 한 모든 일과 내가 수고한 모든 것이 다 헛되어 바람을 잡는 것이며 해 아래에서 무익한 것이로다

Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.

전2:12 내가 돌이켜 지혜와 망령됨과 어리석음을 보았나니 왕 뒤에 오는 자는 무슨 일을 행할까 이미 행한 지 오래 전의 일일 뿐이리라

Then I turned my thoughts to consider wisdom, and also madness and folly. What more can the king's successor do than what has already been done?

전2:13 내가 보니 지혜가 우매보다 뛰어남이 빛이 어둠보다 뛰어남 같도다

I saw that wisdom is better than folly, just as light is better than darkness.

전2:14 지혜자는 그의 눈이 그의 머리 속에 있고 우매자는 어둠 속에 다니지만 그들 모두가 당하는 일이 모두 같으리라는 것을 나도 깨달아 알았도다

The wise man has eyes in his head, while the fool walks in the darkness; but I came to realize that the same fate overtakes them both.

전2:15 내가 내 마음속으로 이르기를 우매자가 당한 것을 나도 당하리니 내게 지혜가 있었다 한들 내게 무슨 유익이 있으리요 하였도다 이에 내가 내 마음속으로 이르기를 이것도 헛되도다 하였도다

Then I thought in my heart, "The fate of the fool will overtake me also. What then do I gain by being wise?" I said in my heart, "This too is meaningless."

전2:16 지혜자도 우매자와 함께 영원하도록 기억함을 얻지 못하나니 후일에는 모두 다 잊어버린 지 오랠 것임이라 오호라 지혜자의 죽음이 우매자의 죽음과 일반이로다

For the wise man, like the fool, will not be long remembered; in days to come both will be forgotten. Like the fool, the wise man too must die!

전2:17 이러므로 내가 사는 것을 미워하였노니 이는 해 아래에서 하는 일이 내게 괴로움이요 모두 다 헛되어 바람을 잡으려는 것이기 때문이로다

So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

전2:18 내가 해 아래에서 내가 한 모든 수고를 미워하였노니 이는 내 뒤를 이을 이에게 남겨 주게 됨이라

I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me.

전2:19 그 사람이 지혜자일지, 우매자일지야 누가 알랴마는 내가 해 아래에서 내 지혜를 다하여 수고한 모든 결과를 그가 다 관리하리니 이것도 헛되도다

And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will have control over all the work into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This too is meaningless.

전2:20 이러므로 내가 해 아래에서 한 모든 수고에 대하여 내가 내 마음에 실망하였도다

So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun.

전2:21 어떤 사람은 그 지혜와 지식과 재주를 다하여 수고하였어도 그가 얻은 것을 수고하지 아니한 자에게 그의 몫으로 넘겨주리니 이것도 헛된 것이며 큰 악이로다

For a man may do his work with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then he must leave all he owns to someone who has not worked for it. This too is meaningless and a great misfortune.

전2:22 사람이 해 아래에서 행하는 모든 수고와 마음에 애쓰는 것이 무슨 소득이 있으랴

What does a man get for all the toil and anxious striving with which he labors under the sun?

전2:23 일평생에 근심하며 수고하는 것이 슬픔뿐이라 그의 마음이 밤에도 쉬지 못하나니 이것도 헛되도다

All his days his work is pain and grief; even at night his mind does not rest. This too is meaningless.

전2:24 사람이 먹고 마시며 수고하는 것보다 그의 마음을 더 기쁘게 하는 것은 없나니 내가 이것도 본즉 하나님의 손에서 나오는 것이로다

A man can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in his work. This too, I see, is from the hand of God,

전2:25 아, 먹고 즐기는 일을 누가 나보다 더 해 보았으랴

for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment?

전2:26 하나님은 그가 기뻐하시는 자에게는 지혜와 지식과 희락을 주시나 죄인에게는 노고를 주시고 그가 모아 쌓게 하사 하나님을 기뻐하는 자에게 그가 주게 하시지만 이것도 헛되어 바람을 잡는 것이로다

To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

전도서 (Ecclesiastes) 3 장.

Ecclesiastes 3

전3:1 범사가 기한이 있고 천하 만사가 다 때가 있나니

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven:

전3:2 날 때가 있고 죽을 때가 있으며 심을 때가 있고 심은 것을 뽑을 때가 있으며

a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot,

전3:3 죽일 때가 있고 치료할 때가 있으며 헐 때가 있고 세울 때가 있으며

a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build,

전3:4 울 때가 있고 웃을 때가 있으며 슬퍼할 때가 있고 춤출 때가 있으며

a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,

전3:5 돌을 던져 버릴 때가 있고 돌을 거둘 때가 있으며 안을 때가 있고 안는 일을 멀리 할 때가 있으며

a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain,

전3:6 찾을 때가 있고 잃을 때가 있으며 지킬 때가 있고 버릴 때가 있으며

a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away,

전3:7 찢을 때가 있고 꿰맬 때가 있으며 잠잠할 때가 있고 말할 때가 있으며

a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak,

전3:8 사랑할 때가 있고 미워할 때가 있으며 전쟁할 때가 있고 평화할 때가 있느니라

a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.

전3:9 일하는 자가 그의 수고로 말미암아 무슨 이익이 있으랴

What does the worker gain from his toil?

전3:10 하나님이 인생들에게 노고를 주사 애쓰게 하신 것을 내가 보았노라

I have seen the burden God has laid on men.

전3:11 하나님이 모든 것을 지으시되 때를 따라 아름답게 하셨고 또 사람들에게는 영원을 사모하는 마음을 주셨느니라 그러나 하나님이 하시는 일의 시종을 사람으로 측량할 수 없게 하셨도다

He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end.

전3:12 사람들이 사는 동안에 기뻐하며 선을 행하는 것보다 더 나은 것이 없는 줄을 내가 알았고

I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live.

전3:13 사람마다 먹고 마시는 것과 수고함으로 낙을 누리는 그것이 하나님의 선물인 줄도 또한 알았도다

That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil--this is the gift of God.

전3:14 하나님께서 행하시는 모든 것은 영원히 있을 것이라 그 위에 더 할 수도 없고 그것에서 덜 할 수도 없나니 하나님이 이같이 행하심은 사람들이 그의 앞에서 경외하게 하려 하심인 줄을 내가 알았도다

I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that men will revere him.

전3:15 이제 있는 것이 옛적에 있었고 장래에 있을 것도 옛적에 있었나니 하나님은 이미 지난 것을 다시 찾으시느니라

Whatever is has already been, and what will be has been before; and God will call the past to account.

전3:16 또 내가 해 아래에서 보건대 재판하는 곳 거기에도 악이 있고 정의를 행하는 곳 거기에도 악이 있도다

And I saw something else under the sun: In the place of judgment--wickedness was there, in the place of justice--wickedness was there.

전3:17 내가 내 마음속으로 이르기를 의인과 악인을 하나님이 심판하시리니 이는 모든 소망하는 일과 모든 행사에 때가 있음이라 하였으며

I thought in my heart, "God will bring to judgment both the righteous and the wicked, for there will be a time for every activity, a time for every deed."

전3:18 내가 내 마음속으로 이르기를 인생들의 일에 대하여 하나님이 그들을 시험하시리니 그들이 자기가 짐승과 다름이 없는 줄을 깨닫게 하려 하심이라 하였노라

I also thought, "As for men, God tests them so that they may see that they are like the animals.

전3:19 인생이 당하는 일을 짐승도 당하나니 그들이 당하는 일이 일반이라 다 동일한 호흡이 있어서 짐승이 죽음 같이 사람도 죽으니 사람이 짐승보다 뛰어남이 없음은 모든 것이 헛됨이로다

Man's fate is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath; man has no advantage over the animal. Everything is meaningless.

전3:20 다 흙으로 말미암았으므로 다 흙으로 돌아가나니 다 한 곳으로 가거니와

All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return.

전3:21 인생들의 혼은 위로 올라가고 짐승의 혼은 아래 곧 땅으로 내려가는 줄을 누가 알랴

Who knows if the spirit of man rises upward and if the spirit of the animal goes down into the earth?"

전3:22 그러므로 나는 사람이 자기 일에 즐거워하는 것보다 더 나은 것이 없음을 보았나니 이는 그것이 그의 몫이기 때문이라 아, 그의 뒤에 일어날 일이 무엇인지를 보게 하려고 그를 도로 데리고 올 자가 누구이랴

So I saw that there is nothing better for a man than to enjoy his work, because that is his lot. For who can bring him to see what will happen after him?
